Love Letters - Day 4

I don't know how it's possible, but we're already almost halfway through! You all have made this so much fun, and it's been an utter delight for me so far. 💜 If you're joining for the first time, you can catch up as follows: Day 1 Day 2 Day 3

As a reminder, there will be a post around this time (9pmish EST) every night through 2/14. And for those who are all caught up, welcome to day 4 of Love Letters, a 00q choose your own adventure! Congratulations, fellow nerds, you've unlocked the library. Day 4 starts below the cut.

His next stop should probably be to the library.

“Can I help you find anything?” A librarian with bright pink hair and a beard to match walked up to where Bond lingered in front of the new acquisitions shelf, trying to get his bearings.

Bond opened his mouth to decline, but he only had an hour and a half before he had to be back at MI6 for a meeting with the Budget Office, and not much idea where to start. Besides, he’d made sure nothing he borrowed could be traced to him, anyway. He’d taken out the library card in Mallory’s name.

“I don’t suppose you have any books on love letters?”

“Books about love letters? Or with examples of them?”

“Yes. Both. Either.”

“Well, you’re in luck. I pulled a few things that might be of interest for our Valentine’s Day display. It’s just over here.”

Bond followed the librarian, whose name badge read “Kai,” to a table decorated with construction paper drawings of candy hearts. They picked up a book called Indelible: Queer Love Letters through the Ages. “This just came in last month, and it’s gorgeous. Give it a look and see if it’s what you need.”

Bond took the book to one of the nearby tables and began to page through.

Before he knew it, nearly an hour had gone by. He wasn’t sure what he’d expected, exactly. Perhaps that love letters from real people would be somehow less than the fictional letter Austen had written for Captain Wentworth—less profound, and more prosaic. There were mundane bits, to be sure, but somehow even they were suffused with light; enhanced, rather than diminished, by the love that brought them into focus.

“I just miss you,” Vita Sackville-West wrote to Virginia Woolf, “in a quite simple desperate human way…I miss you even more than I could have believed; and I was prepared to miss you a good deal.”

And there was profundity, too, a humanity that banked itself like the embers of a fire against the darkness that threatened to overwhelm it. Near the middle of the book, Bond found the letters of Wilfred Owen to Siegfried Sassoon. 

“And you have fixed my Life—however short,” he wrote, almost a year to the day before he was killed in action, barely a week before the end of World War I. “You did not light me: I was always a mad comet; but you have fixed me. I spun round you a satellite for a month, but I shall swing out soon, a dark star in the orbit where you will blaze.”

“What do you think?” Kai asked, returning to Bond’s table.

Bond cleared his throat. “It’s perfect,” he said. “Could I check this out?”

“Of course. I’ll meet you at the circulation desk.” 

Kai took Bond’s library card and scanned it, saying as they did so, “You know, the editors of this anthology are putting together a companion version of contemporary letters. They’re asking people to send in copies of letters they’ve received, to show what love looks like now. If you’re fond of love letters, you should think about sending some in.”

Bond looked down at the circulation desk, rubbing ineffectually at a scuff mark with his finger. He thought of a flooded building in Venice, and all the hopes that had collapsed with it; of the dozens of married women and the handful of married men for whom Bond had been an excuse to pretend, for an hour, or an evening, or a week, that their lives were something more than a string of indistinguishable, empty days. He’d been happy to let them, at the time. He’d been using them for the same thing, after all. But there had been no love letters for him, either, even if he’d never felt the lack until now.

“No,” he said after a moment. “No, I don’t have anything I could send in.”

“Well, you never know,” Kai said, handing over the book. “Valentine’s Day is coming up. You might get lucky.”

“You never know,” Bond said, slipping his library card back in his wallet. “Thanks again.”

As he walked back to MI6, the book safely wrapped in his jacket, he thought, finally, that he might have everything he needed to write Q a proper love letter.

I made up the title of the book Bond looks through, but the love letters (and many more like them!) are real. You can find the letter from Vita Sackville-West here, and the one from Wilfred Owen here.

kid richie gets the losers some candy and a card for his friends for v day but then for eddie he actually sat down and made him a gift; a mixtape (with help from wentworth) of songs he thinks eddie would like along with his favorite flavored ring pop and an invite to have a play date and dinner with him at his house (again with the help of richie’s parents). years later when they’re spending their first valentine’s day as a married couple, eddie pulls out the old mixtape and plays it while they make dinner, only to end up getting distracted and  dancing and just enjoying being close. and yeah they end up burning their food and have to get take out from their favorite thai restaurant, but it’s still a good valentine’s day.

Hey! I've seen every live action adaptation official adaptation of resident evil! Here are my thoughts! (warning: SPOILERS!)

Resident Evil: Cool and slick. Kinda a let down that Rain died, but her death was effective. If you watched this, and only this, you can see it as a tie in to the games and a nice standalone feature. Weird that the dog scene in this is better than the Netflix one.

Resident Evil Apocalypse: Fun, if the characters are flat and one note. Milla Jovovich (Alice) and Sienna Guillory (Jill Valentine) own in their action scenes. Could have sprung for CGI for Nemisis in the close range fight - made it more believable.

Resident Evil Extinction: Mad max rip off with character's somehow flatter than the previous installment. Clair Redfield was played well by Ali Larter, but her character had nothing but "leader of the caravan" - needed more characterization. The oil rig set piece was alright, but kinda a low point of the series.

Resident Evil Afterlife: Damn cool first and last action scene. Wentworth Miller was a great Chris Redfield, but Shawn Roberts as Albert Wesker was the MVP - so over the top, and loving every second of it. Boris Kodjoe as Luther Wes had great charisma as well. The middle of the movie is kinda standard zombie movie and not that interesting - could have been better, but otherwise okay. This movie's title should have been Afterlife - given how it's after the extinction - the next one should have been called rebirth. Hindsight is 2020.

Resident Evil Retribution: Best installment, in my opinion. The underground water base gave a variety of locations, the monsters were varied and gave room from several set pieces. Say what you want about Johann Urb as Leon, Kevin Duran as Benny, and Li BingBing as Ada, but all three had good chemistry with each other - not a lot of substance, but DAMN, did they have style. Michelle Rodriguez was underutilized - should have had an OG version of Rain come back as a clone and survive to the final film - that would have been cool. Ending shot mirror's the first movie's ending shot x10 setting up for an epic conclusion.

Resident Evil - The Final Chapter: WE WE'RE ROBBED! Why did they go back to the Extinction ascetic and skip the much more interesting looking Washington DC battle (and not to mention kill several characters) for a run down retread of the first movie?! Even if you just wanted to do that, why is Clair and Alice the only characters at the end?! Yes, Jason Issacs is a great actor and it was cool you brought him back, but it required the lore to bend over backwards to fit him in. I'm not saying it super bad - some action sequences are very cool - just disappointing.

Resident Evil - Welcome to Racoon City: And I thought the last installment sucked! Bad fight choreography and filming, bland characterization (oh, Albert, what did they do to you? A misunderstood "not" bad guy that doesn't even do anything noteworthy? And Jill was turned into a weeping willow? Leon as the comic relief?), not scary (somehow, the Licker from the first Resident Evil was better then what showed up here). How do we beat the final boss? Oh, I just so happened to find a rocket launcher - LUCKY US! Just...bad. And also kills any straightforward adaption.

Resident Evil - Netflix live action series: In attempting to create something unique, they ended up presenting a boring YA novel mashed with a disappointing apocalypse (STOP IT WITH THE ZOMBIE APOCALYPSE IN THESE MOVIES! IT WORKED IN THE ORIGINAL INSTALLMENTS, BUT NO MORE! IT BACKS THE ENTIRE FRANCHISE INTO A CORNER BECAUSE YOU CAN NEVER PULL BACK THE APOCALYPSE!) The lead constantly makes dumb decisions and survives not by skill or smarts, but by luck. Giant centipede attack? Survives because of random survivors. Surrounded by Zombies? Survives because a car just so happens to be swinging by. Only have a chainsaw against an oncoming horde of zombies? That sounds cool - no wait, the chainsaw breaks down - awe. WAIT! She's been saying she is smart - write her a way out of this that requires her to think! She can see an grenade that didn't pop off - she positions it at the door, fires her last few rounds on it's hinges, it falls and explodes - sending the door upward and breaking the granite above her and sending down an avalanche against them....or you can have her throw it and then stand up when it doesn't explode and have the door falling down thing be dumb luck. UGH! And the set pieces just do not have any good conclusion. Giant centipede - the centerpiece of the first trailer - killed by a dozen bullets from offscreen characters. Literally no problem to put down - SO BORING! Interesting set up - good actors (Lance Reddick rocks and the rest of the actors and actresses do well - but MAN should he have been playing the real Wesker - his one scene as OG wesker was SO FUN AND THE BEST Live Action adaptation of the character - but NOPE! Let's have him play a dad and an out their guy - cheat the fans even more), disastrous execution. FYI - somehow WTRC is more boring than this, but there are just so much wrong with this instalment. PLEASE give the franchise back to PS Anderson and Milla Jovovich - the OG series wasn't all winners, but they were better than this and WTRC!

Honestly,  one of the best gifts I've ever received was my high school diploma and two college degrees from the University of Toledo in Toledo, Ohio.   The greatest gift that I have ever received was, the gift of Eternal Life from Jesus Christ on Sunday February 15, 2015 from getting baptized on that day at Fort McKinley United Methodist Church located at 3721 West Siebenthaler Avenue in Dayton, Ohio 45406.  I have been Born Again on that day 9 years ago.   I have been a God-Fearing Man for 9 years now.   Please continue to pray for me because my Uncle Johnnie Lee Hopkins died before his physical birthday.  He was 80 years old. I Love all of you very much ❤️. Happy Valentines Day Ladies.   I live less than 500 yards from the Church.   The Apartment Complex is called Wentworth HI Rise Apartments and it is located at 2765 Wentworth Avenue Dayton, Ohio 45406.  I live in Apartment 607.  I love all of you in bunches 💗 I want to say to the Lovely Ladies that I love you as well.   I am praying for all of my neighbors who snort Fentaynl that God Loves You Too.  I guess these people don't know that Fentaynl is an Animal Tranquilizer  that is capable of killing people who ingest, smoke,  or inhale this powder.  This drug has killed over 2000 people in Dayton, Ohio within the past four years now.   God Bless All of You!

Let's spend a little time with the Wentworths again today, where I can safely report that there are no new babies!

Frederick continues to the the best granddad ever. (Seriously, he's absolutely brilliant with all the youngsters.)

Despite not being the most outgoing lad, oldest child Valentine is making friends at school, and he gets on especially well with Anthony.

His younger sister Frederica demonstrates that there's simply nothing you can't do in a pink leotard.

And youngest Susanna ages up, with quite frankly the most terrifying set of gnashers I've ever seen.

To all you single heads out there in the crowd, it's alright- theres always going to be a someone for everyone wether it's platonic or romantic! enough will the idle talk, let's get into the meat of it!

Valentines shows care, and nothing shows care more than boundaries. You might be asking, "isn't it hypocritical for you, Penelope Paparazzi, to talk about boundaries?" And to that I say you are correct in every aspect. That's why, this isn't Penelope talking. it's of course, me.

I don't want to beat a dead horse with a stick but the conversation that took place earlier this week has really killed a part of me, the part of me that loved making these posts; indulging you all in what you wanted to hear. Penelopes job was to make you all feel special and popular in a sense, and do this job she did- at the price of most of you treating me like a content farm on occasions.

I obviously don't mind the occasional "when is the next post" but what I do mind is when you treat whoever is making these posts like the actual characters: Ted was kind enough to make a post as Hella covering the Wentworths and was met with mostly negative feedback and playful ridicule- you would NEVER treat a person like this in real life especially if you knew them. You treat the person/character making content like you would any other content creator.

While this post does seem targeted, I assure you I am speaking to all 3 people reading this blog- this and the next paragraph is, however, aimed towards a certain individual. What you said was unacceptable and the manner you portrayed your opinions in were unacceptable. If you had a problem with the post, you shouldve shared it in dms or somewhere like the confession channel. I don't care it was late, I don't care you wernt feeling like yourself: the things you said were hurtful and you should've conveyed them in a more mature manner.

Similarly, I stated that the website would not be finished anytime soon because I didn't want anyone expecting teasers and putting pressure on me. I don't want the website brought up again until i feel ready to share.

Im only making this statement in a blog post because I know the people im aiming this towards are the only ones who read. The making of this blog and related works has caused a show of dehumanisation. Please understand, no matter the front during roleplay there's still a person behind the screen. If an occurance similar to earlier this week ever crops up again I will close this blog and related works for the sake of everyone's mental health.
