You were cold, your jacket soaking wet from the Chicago rain as you made your way onto the L. Your mouth felt dry, your stomach dropping to your feet when you realized you hadn't checked on Carmen all day — and hardy at all that entire week. You figured you didn't have to stress over your absence too much, but a text wouldn't hurt.
You pulled your phone out of your pocket, your eyes glancing over it as you tried to find Carmy's contact through the static in your brain.
Hey. 11:34pm
Haven't seen you in a bit. Did you get home okay? 11:35pm
Your fingers frantically danced around the keyboard, your leg bouncing as you waited for a response. You needed something to calm your nerves. That feeling in your empty belly told you something wasn't right; you must've missed something. 'Fomo,' you called it.
Meanwhile, Carmen was taking his first steps into his apartment for that night, the cold air conditioning doing nothing to provide any comfort from the Chicago cold. He felt his phone vibrate once against his pocket, not thinking to check who it might've been as he tossed his baseball cap onto the couch; until it vibrated a second time.
He fished his phone out from the depths of his pocket, the blue-light shining against his face; your contact name, 'Pico' showing up twice. He removed his wool jacket, letting it fall onto the couch before setting his phone down and peeling off his tight-fitting, white t-shirt and taking a seat on the couch. Carmen held his phone between his hands, his leg bouncing as he thought of what could've justified you texting him after being out of touch with one another, practically all week. But he opened the text.
Just got home. You still on the L? 11:45pm.
He put a hand over his mouth, grazing his thumb over his cheek as he thought of the distance you two experienced. You hadn't visited The Beef all week, you hadn't asked him or Richie for help moving the furniture into the vintage thrift shop that you planned on opening in just 4 weeks.
You licked your lips as you stepped into your apartment, the warm glow from your kitchen making you feel comfortable... and it was empty. Too empty, now that you could afford your place and didn't split rent with your co-worker, Ashley, anymore. You were used to having Carmen here every once and a while, discussing business plans, leaving a jacket or two, but this week was lonely.
You and Carmen knew each other once: two aspiring hotshots in New York City, working alongside each other at the best restaurant on the planet, but this was now. You liked the simplicity of your soon to be vintage coffee shop. Just a little over a year ago, you'd come home with dry, calloused fingers and bits of onion under your finger nails that would burn your eyes later. You couldn't take it anymore. Not after what the head chef put you and Carmen through for the very last time. You left, never considering that Carmen would've returned for any particular reason; but there he was, in Chicago, just 15 minutes away from you by car, fixing up 'mom and dads piece of shit' that his late brother passed onto him.
And something deep in your stomach urged you to see him.
Just tonight. It won't be weird, right? Just two adults trying to catch up on each others lives, like good people, with the little bit of free time they both had.
You felt like you practically owed him a chunk of your leisure. It was the least you could do.

You replied, your nails against your teeth as you stared at your phone, waiting impatiently for a response. Bradley sat on the couch next to your Uncle Pete, both of them engrossed in Game One of the World Series when you stepped in front of the TV, dressed as Penny Lane. You had dyed your hair to match Kate Hudson’s, styling it in loose curls, and you were wearing a pair of low rise jeans with a cropped camisole and a suede jacket with fur trim.
“Time to get dressed for the party,” you smirked, noting how his eyes moved appreciatively over your form, earning him a smack on the back of the head from Maverick.
“Keep your hands to yourself, Bradshaw,” Mav warned, standing to kiss your temple on his way to the kitchen. He was still adjusting to your relationship with Bradley, though it didn't surprise him that you ended up together. He simply didn't want either of you getting hurt. “You look nice, Squirt. Have fun tonight.”
“Thanks, Uncle Pete,” you replied, turning your attention back to Bradley as you held up a vintage ‘70s button down shirt you had picked up at a thrift store for his costume.
He sighed and let his head fall back against the couch at the sight of the shirt. “You were serious about me doing Almost Famous too?”
“C’mon, Brad! This costume is so low effort, and you promised if I agreed to go to the party you would dress up with me,” you reminded him, stepping closer to drop the shirt on his lap.
You typically weren't a party-goer, and since you started dating your best friend a month earlier, he had encouraged you to become more social. This particular party was being thrown by a couple of his baseball teammates at the beach, and it was expected that most of the school would be there.
He lifted the shirt to inspect it and then looked back up to you. “I promised?” he asked, reaching with his free hand to pull you down so you were sitting on his lap. “Doesn’t sound like something I’d promise.”
“You did,” you nodded, poking his nose with your finger. “Now, come on. We’re gonna be late.”
Bradley kissed you before standing with the shirt in hand, gently placing you in the spot on the couch he’d just vacated. “Just the shirt. I’ll be right back.”
You laughed as he headed off to his room to change, grumbling about your choice in costumes. When he returned a few minutes later, the bright smile on your face made him regret all of his previous complaints.
“How does it look?” he asked, chuckling as you bounced on your toes happily.
“You’re the perfect Russell Hammond. One last touch,” you moved toward him, tousling his hair before sticking a fake mustache on his upper lip and kissing him when he tried to protest. “You want me to go, right?”
He shook his head with a smirk. “Okay, but you owe me,” he teased, grabbing the keys for his Bronco off the table. “We’re leaving!” he called out to Maverick, ushering you out the door.
The drive to the beach was peaceful, the radio playing oldies that you both had grown up on and enjoyed. You were nervous though, and Bradley sensed it. His hand reached over to squeeze yours when he finally parked the car.
“It’ll be fun, you’ll see. You know Josh and Mike,” he reassured you. “And if you wanna go home, just let me know.”
You nodded and climbed out of the truck with him, letting his large hand take yours as you headed for the bonfire. The sun had just set, the last streaks of purple and pink in the sky as night took over, and the large fire illuminated everything around it. People in all kinds of costumes were dancing to the loud music playing on a boom box, having a good time.
Several people approached to greet Bradley, complimenting your costumes when he introduced you as his girlfriend. Eventually you found his teammates hanging out around a keg, and Bradley reached for the cups, intent on pouring some of the amber liquid for both of you, but you protested, placing a hand on his.
"I'd rather we didn't," you began, concern in your voice.
He kissed you gently. "Okay, that's fine," he replied, putting the cups back without hesitation. You had been vocal about wanting him to stop drinking, and he respected your wishes. "Wanna dance?"
Your unease lifted, replaced by a smile as you nodded. "I'd love to," you said, grateful for his understanding and the dance that awaited you in the flickering light of the bonfire. The energy of the party was addictive, and you found yourself enjoying it more than you thought you would.
As the night progressed, you and Bradley danced together in perfect harmony, swaying to the music under the enchanting glow of the bonfire. The surrounding whispers of conversations, the crackling of the embers, and the distant sound of the ocean waves created a soothing backdrop.
The party had calmed down, and it felt like time had slowed, allowing you to cherish this intimate moment. In Bradley's embrace, you found both comfort and excitement. His large hands guided you with a gentle rhythm, speaking to your deep connection. You tilted your head back, your eyes meeting his, and for a moment, everything else faded into the background.

this one wasn't requested by anyone in particular, but i wanted to thank @soulsforsales, @d1or4nge1 and @themoonlightislace for encouraging me to do it. ily all 🩷 this is also the guide that's most similar to the way i dress in real life. i hope you guys enjoy this and feel free ro request one if you want

I was wondering how I can make my style more classic coquette? I have red vintage heart-shaped glasses, matching red lipstick, and cherry earrings, but I don’t really know how to style them as far as outfits or shoes. Tysm for your time!
omg i have shoplook collages just for this but before we get to that heres some ideas! ill make a seperate post bc i KNOW this is gonna be long
to start off look for inspo! i recommend lolita 1997 as well as search 1940s sewing patterns as lots of the clothes they wore are what we wear now
gingham will be your best friend, whether its red, yellow or blue. Look for gingham dresses as they'll be perfect casual items that you can pair with your makeup/accessories. Check bonnechance, forever21, tjmaxx, marshalls, poshmark, mercari etc especially during the spring as they are going on sale
instead of ruffle denim skirts look for aline denim and chambray skirts as that is more in line w the classic coquette look. also look for white and pink aline skirts.
for shorts look for sailor shorts and any a line shorts. you can even look for matching sets as well in gingham, seersucker (another great to look for seersucker dresses), and floral patterns! you can even support small businesses on etsy and commission custom matching sets. it's a little more pricey but it has the double benefit of getting exactly what you want and it gives smaller designers more exposure and income!
skirts are also simple they can be plaid, solid colors, floral etc
for patterns in general fruits like lemons, strawberries, cherries, gingham, polka dots and sailor stripes are great to look for.
for tops look for all the above patterns mentioned. but also you can look for vintage style bustier tops, halter tops (much like the ones dolores wore in lolita 97) and bardot tops. they don't have to be cropped if you dont want and its actually quite easy to find non cropped options! little details like lace trim and lettuce hems are also super cute. you can even make a nod to the tomboyish aspect of classic coquette with baseball/ringer tees and vintage graphic tees,
for dresses look for fabrics like cotton or linen as it fits the weather and style more. floral maxi dresses and even halter dresses.
for shoes, keep it super simple with classic sneakers (i loke skechers roadies, pumas and converse), saddle shoes and mary janes. saddle shoes are a great medium btwn sneakers and mary janes as theyre casual enough to be worn every day and add a little more flair to an outfit. i also 1000000000% reccomend cork wedge sandals!
other accessories are baseball caps, oversized flannels, varsity jackets, collegiate sweaters, bobby socks, socks with lace trims, hair ribbons ets
this style is also easily transferable to cooler weather contrary to popular belief. Keep sheer tights in black, white and nude (as in your skin tone not the generic nude) and layer them with thicker tights. make sure you have a good quality coat if needed but especially vintage style pea coats much like the one dolores wears, swap out the crop tops for cozy sweaters and long sleeves and nice boots! im not a big ugg girl but if you live in a super cold area like i used to, a little tip is to keep ur cute shoes in ur bookbag/locker and change into them! dresses line pinafores can be worn year round depending on the fabric (cotton/linen for summer/spring and wool for fall/winter)

They learn each other in the hot kitchen, the stench of seafood mixing with steam from the sink. They learn each other by yelling, “Behind!” and “Corner!” and bickering over stolen oyster crackers. Nancy scrapes and stacks while Ace grabs plate after plate, too focused on what he considers the sacred act of dish washing to bother making conversation with the new girl.
When she met him during her first shift on the Fourth of July, she recognized him instantly.
She remembered him from the halls of Keene High, which he would haunt in his beat-up jackets, a different girl hanging on his arm every other week. She remembered him from the far corner of the parking lot, where he’d hotbox his vintage car, which she later learns he calls Florence. He’s named the sink Edith and the fryer Ruth. He has an affinity for old cars, good weed, and women, and Nancy pays attention to his hands every time they’re running under the hot water. She wonders how they don’t burn, how his veins would feel under her fingers.
Two weeks after she starts at the Claw, they have their first real conversation. Nancy ducks her head out back to grab him at the end of his break, and he offers her a hit. She hesitates, watching his strong hand holding out the joint, his delicate mouth letting out a lazy snake of smoke as he looks at her.
“Um, no,” Nancy says, hoping she isn’t blushing. “I don’t smoke.”
“Smart,” he says, taking another hit before putting it out. “Wouldn’t want to ruin that brain of yours.”
Now she’s definitely blushing. She doesn’t know what he means by that, but she doesn’t have the courage to ask. “George needs you back inside.”
They learn each other slowly and steadily. Sometimes they linger in the locker room before and after shifts, exchanging measured niceties: “How was your night?” and “Are you working tomorrow?”
She starts timing her breaks to coincide with his because she loves to watch his mouth when he smokes. She sits on the back step eating whatever she ordered for lunch while he leans against the railing, taking breaks between drags to steal some of her fries. At first, they don’t talk much, just bask in each other’s quiet company with the view of the staff parking lot and the woods beyond, the hum of the restaurant a happy background music to their private thoughts. He’s the only person in her life who doesn’t ask her any questions. He never mentions her mom, even though everybody knows. She treasures this silence that he offers; she’s relieved to not have to field sentiments of, “I’m sorry,” and, “Do you want to talk about it?”
She knows hardly anything about him—not even his last name—but his company is the thing she looks forward to the most about going to work.
On the brink of August, he breaks their sacred silence. It’s a sweltering, sunny day. The front tendrils of Nancy’s hair are wet with sweat. When Ace adjusts his baseball cap, she notices beads of it on the back of his neck, darkening his dirty blond hair.
“What are you doing here?” he asks.
“Eating my lunch,” she answers automatically, not looking up from her shitty fish and chips.
“No, I mean, what are you doing here ?” He gestures with his joint at the parking lot, the restaurant behind them. “At the Claw. In Horseshoe Bay. You’re college material.”
He doesn’t say it, but she hears it in the subtext. “College material” means lawyer’s daughter, dean’s list student, Sea Queen . Even if the two of them had been in the same year, they never would have had classes together. Nancy was all honors and AP, all potential and glory.
“I didn’t apply,” she says shortly. He reaches over and snags a fry from her tray. “Columbia would have laughed in my face.”
Realization settles over Ace’s face. The smell of weed has grown on Nancy. She associates it with him, which means she doesn’t mind it. She even likes it, finds comfort in it.
“Your grades tanked?” he says, mercifully filling in the blanks himself.
Nancy only nods and stares out at the parking lot.
“It would have happened to anyone,” Ace says. She feels his hand settle on his shoulder. It’s strong and warm through the white cotton of her t-shirt. “You’ll get out of here someday. When you’re ready.”
After their first conversation, they have one a smoke break. Ace tells her about his coding misadventures, while Nancy tells him about her stints as a girl detective. He starts calling her the Hero of Horseshoe Bay: a loving, joking nickname.
They learn each other. Slowly, through the haze of smoke and steam, they form a bond.

Notice the poise of this adult male, his oversized scarf – easily confused with the mane of an adolescent male lion – indicating a management position within the (at the time) flourishing advertising industry. Notice the perceived projection of the duality of man by combining artefacts from separate parts of the world and rooted in conflicting ideological perspectives – the tote bag with the picture of Che, the "vintage" German surplus army jacket – both contrasted by the baseball cap and the pair of (not quite) "box fresh" Converse.
