Reposted from @fathermcgivney Today we celebrate the feast of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary with this Vatican Mosaic Studio depiction based on Antonello de Messina’s painting. Our Lady’s chaste gaze expresses her grace. It seems to radiate towards the viewer, and emanates today’s Antiphon: “Your birth, O Virgin Mother of God, proclaims joy to the whole world, for from you arose the glorious Sun of Justice, Christ our God.” #FeastDay #Feast #BlessedMother #VirginMary #MaryMotherofGod #BlessedVirginMary #VisitFromHome (at United States) https://www.instagram.com/p/CTkECZQrNx7/?utm_medium=tumblr

The organizers of @artingmx. have done a wonderful job (& a lot of work) turning out an online exhibition which I am participating in titled CUIR: Reccionarie. The show talks about #gender, #sexuality, #identity and the #body among others. During this time of lockdown with public spaces having to close, Arting invites us to reflect on the use of new technologies that contribute to transforming paradigms from a hospital that refers to the #COVID-19 pandemic, the HIV epidemic, and homosexuality that was once considered a mental illness. The space is 100% #digital, and will be open until October.  There are several rooms, my work can be found in the Common Room, where curator Héctor Archundia Ibarra @archivaldo.archundia describes my work in conversation with others as “creating extraterrestrial beings, fantastic characters from one or more bodies charged with an abstract sensuality.” Indeed!!!!! My painting examples my recent work that is inspired by the incredible choreography from contemporary dancers William Forsythe @william_forsythe_ and Raul “@rubberlegz ” Yasit’s #ALIGNUNGUNG (do check it out!).  To see the show, open my website and click on the thumbnail for the exhibition, then navigate through the rooms. Clicking on the pieces of #art will allow you to view them in another window. There are also write ups in each room which can be read by clicking on the note pads which have a small A (for Arting) on them.  Enjoy!!!!! 💖 @armando_garlez #cuirreaccionarie #cuir #cdmx #museumfromhome #visitfromhome #artcanhelp #warrenhairart #warrenhair #covid19 #hiv #aids #virology #digitalgallery #lgbti #lgbt #ilovepv (at World Wide) https://www.instagram.com/p/CEktmAdl0UQ/?igshid=tzxx5tp49ym7

The 3rd Goal, pt. 3
After exploring Gondar’s town center, Fasil Castle, we took a bajaj over to one of Ethiopia’s most beloved churches, the Debre Berhan Selassie Church, which is shown in the first 4 photos.
“If it weren’t for a swarm of bees, the beautiful church of Debre Berhan Selassie would have probably been destroyed like most of Gondar’s other churches by the marauding Sudanese Dervishes in the 1880s. When the Dervishes showed up outside the gates of the church, a giant swarm of bees surged out of the compound and chased the invaders away. This was a lucky intervention: with its stone walls, arched doors, two-tiered thatch roof and well-preserved paintings, Debre Berhan Selassie is one of the most beautiful churches in Ethiopia.
The roof, with its rows and rows of winged cherubs, representing the omnipresence of God, draws most eyes. There’s space for 135 cherubs, though 13 have been erased by water damage. Aside from the cherubs the highlights have to be the devilish Bosch-like depiction of hell and the Prophet Mohammed atop a camel being led by a devil. Although local tradition attributes most paintings to the 17th-century artist Haile Meskel, this is unlikely because the building only dates back to the late 18th century. The original circular church, created in the 1690s by Iyasu I, was destroyed by lightening.
A large stone wall with 12 rounded towers surrounds the compound and these represent the 12 apostles. The larger 13th tower [the entrance gate that can be seen through the arch that Ryan and I are standing under] symbolises Christ and is shaped to resemble the Lion of Judah.“ Additionally, you can see a lion’s tail above the archway. -http://www.lonelyplanet.com/ethiopia/northern-ethiopia/gonder/sights/religious/debre-berhan-selassie
Next, we headed over to what is shown in the final 6 photos: Fasilides’ Bath. “Although the complex was used for swimming (royalty used to don inflated goat-skin lifejackets for their refreshing dips!), it was likely to have been constructed for religious celebrations, the likes of which still go on today. Once a year, it’s filled with water for the Timkat [January 19th] celebration. After the water is blessed by the bishop, the pool becomes a riot of splashing water, shouts and laughter as a crowd of hundreds jumps in. The ceremony replicates Christ’s baptism in the Jordan River and is seen as an important renewal of faith.
Just east of the main compound is Zobel’s Mausoleum. Local legend states it’s named after Yohannes I’s horse, which ran so fast that he was able to escape some bandits he encountered while out hunting buffalo. Or, another tale says that it heroically brought Iyasu (Yohannes’ son) back from Sudan after his father’s death. Not only was the horse a good walker, but it could jump 25m in a single leap.“ - http://www.lonelyplanet.com/ethiopia/northern-ethiopia/gonder/sights/historic/fasiladas-bath
Unsurprisingly, those nine days with Ryan were some of the most incredible moments I had spent in Ethiopia. A photograph may say a thousand words, a blog post can describe an event in vivid detail, and a letter can bleed with emotion, but it’s not until you step off that plane and touch the foreign land with your own feet where you can truly experience a place. After nearly 14 months of trying to explain my daily life in Ethiopia to my loved ones back home, I finally had someone in the States that truly understood what it feels like to walk the streets of my town, wake up in my tiny house, endure a typical mini bus ride, and have 15 pairs of eyes on me at all times. That’s why we have the 3rd Goal; I will always have those nine days to cherish with Ryan, and what a wonderful feeling that is.

Reposted from @fathermcgivney During today’s Mass for Sunday, December 12th, we heard “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to bring glad tidings to the poor.” (Is 61:1) Join Msgr. John Bevins as he reflects on how this quote applies to Blessed Michael McGivney on this 3rd Sunday of Advent. Msgr. John Bevins is a native of Waterbury, Connecticut, the birthplace of Knights of Columbus founder Blessed Michael McGivney. Ordained a priest in 1958, he spent more than two decades and traveled the world as a U.S. Navy chaplain. On returning to parish ministry, he was assigned to the Church of the Immaculate Conception in Waterbury and was instrumental in its designation as a basilica. Reposted from @fathermcgivney “We should glory in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, for he is our salvation, our life and our resurrection: through him we are saved and made free.” -Entrance Antiphon for the Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross Today we celebrate the Exaltation of the Holy Cross, honoring the cross that Jesus was crucified on. According to Christian tradition, St. Helena went on a pilgrimage to the Holy Land during the 4th century in search of the holy places from the life of the Messiah. During an excavation, workers found three crosses with one containing the inscription that Pilate had placed over Jesus’ head. This cross was immediately venerated by St. Helena. Later the site became the location of the Basilica of the Holy Sepulcher. Today the cross is the universal symbol of the Christian faith. Christians wear crosses to show their belief in Jesus, the Savior. Churches also display crosses and crucifixes, such as this Carolingian-style cross is a replica of the Crucifix which hangs in the Vatican Grottoes and in St. Mary’s Church in New Haven, Connecticut. This style of crucifix features Christ on the cross with a halo around his head instead of the crown of thorns; He is surrounded by God the Father on top, the Blessed Virgin Mary on the left, St. John the Evangelist on the right, and Sts. Peter and Paul at the feet of Christ. #FeastDay #Feast #HolyCross #FeastDayOfTheHolyCross #ExaltationOfTheHolyCross #Jesus #JesusChrist @stmaryparishnewhaven #VisitFromHome (at United States) https://www.instagram.com/p/CTzgtfmrIVU/?utm_medium=tumblr

Reposted from @fathermcgivney This month we celebrate the centennial anniversary of Columbia magazine. Its precursor, The Columbiad, started in November 1893 with Knights of Columbus National Organizer Thomas Cummings as the first editor. By 1903, The Columbiad was the Knights’ official magazine, “dedicated to providing information about the interests and activities of the Knights of Columbus.” The KofC took over the publication in August 1921 and changed the name to Columbia with John B. Kennedy as the first editor. In the past century, Columbia has informed Knights, their families, and others with articles and artwork contributed by “the nation’s foremost public men, essayists, fiction writers, and artists.” From illustrated artwork to photographs, the covers of this monthly magazine are a beautiful array of snapshots in history during the past 100 years. Today, Columbia magazine has a circulation of 1.7 million and is printed in four languages. Reflecting upon Columbia magazine, a past supreme knight noted: “The goal of the magazine is simple: To promote and further the aims of the Order and of the Church universal; to enhance Catholic family life; to offer spiritual direction and sustenance to its readers; and to report on the variety and ingenuity of the Knights of Columbus fraternal and charitable activities.” #KnightsofColumbus #KofC @kofc_official #Columbia #VisitFromHome (at United States) https://www.instagram.com/p/CSrbIizrerX/?utm_medium=tumblr

Reposted from @fathermcgivney “Oh, Come let us adore Him, Christ the Lord!” All eyes are on the Christ Child in “The Grail” Nativity by Trina Paulus, named for the formative time the artist spent at Grailville center in Loveland, Ohio. The soft white monochromic scene evokes a quiet reverence. Each figure offers gifts and pays homage to Jesus, who is tenderly held in Mary’s arms with Joseph at her side. The gifts are all equally precious, whether a Magi’s gold or a shepherd’s lamb. All are given in adoration to the Christ Child, who is Himself the most perfect gift to all mankind. #ChristmasInJuly #ChristmasIsComing #ChristmasSpirit #Christmas2021 #ChristmasCountDown #ChristmasStartsWithChrist #CelebrateChrist #Nativity #NativityScene #Nativities #Presepe #Presépio #Krippe #CrècheNoël #BelénNavideño #Szopka #VisitFromHome (at Loveland, Ohio) https://www.instagram.com/p/CRwRuizrEZ0/?utm_medium=tumblr

Reposted from @fathermcgivney Happy 100th anniversary to the Knights of Columbus South Carolina State Council! #OnThisDay in 1921, this state council was instituted nearly two decades after the South Carolina’s first local council, Rev. PN Lynch Council 704 in Charleston, was established on October 26, 1902. Prior to becoming an independent state council, South and North Carolina had a joint State Council for a decade. This jurisdiction was led for six out of ten years by a South Carolinian, including John F. Rafferty of Council 704, who was the Carolinas first State Deputy and held the position for four years. Growth of the Knights in the Carolinas was slow, with a total of seven councils between the two states in 1919, but only 1% of the population was Catholic. Today, 10% of South Carolina’s population is Catholic. Knights from South Carolina have always been avid participants in the Ultrasound program, one of the life initiatives of the Knights of Columbus. A year after the KofC donated its first ultrasound, the South Carolina State Council presented this figurine, “Sleeping Baby in Angel Wings,” to each donor of $1000 or more who participated in the statewide Pro-Life Program. Over $90,000 was raised in 2010-2011, which provided six ultrasound machines to pregnancy centers in the state. #OTD #ThisDayInHistory #THID #KofC #KnightsofColumbus @kofc_official @scknightsofcolumbus #SouthCarolina #VisitFromHome (at South Carolina) https://www.instagram.com/p/CRCBRTKDZ5N/?utm_medium=tumblr

Reposted from @fathermcgivney Happy Birthday St John Paul ll, born Karol Józef Wojtyła #OnThisDay in 1920! In October 2003, the Holy Father bestowed his apostolic blessing to the Knights of Columbus. His words pointed to Blessed Michael McGivney as a role model for all Knights, stating “In fidelity to the vision of Father McGivney, may you continue to seek new ways of being a leaven of the Gospel in the world, and a spiritual force for the renewal of the Church in holiness, unity, and truth.” #HappyBirthday #JohnPaulII #JP2 #PopeJohnPaulII #PopeJohnPaul2 #Pope @jp2shrine #OTD #ThisDayInHistory #TDIH #KnightsofColumbus #KofC @kofc_official #FatherMcGivney #FatherMichaelMcGivney #FrMcGivney #McGivney #VisitFromHome (at United States) https://www.instagram.com/p/CPBHBl-LibY/?utm_medium=tumblr

Reposted from @fathermcgivney In 1920, Supreme Knight James Flaherty led 235 Knights on a pilgrimage to France and Rome. On their trip to Rome, they had an audience with Pope Benedict XV where he said, “The Knights of Columbus gained the praise and admiration not only of Catholics but of all of good heart.” The pope asked the Knights to help establish playgrounds in Rome to help the church’s outreach to young people through sports activities. Pope Benedict XV told the Knights that other denominations were providing athletic facilities where they were attracting young Catholics. In 1921 the Knights established a $1 million fund for the Roman playgrounds. The first of the playgrounds built was St. Peter’s Oratory, which was dedicated on April 9, 1924. The playground included a large two-story school and a gymnasium. To commemorate this construction, Pope Benedict XV’s successor, Pope Pius XI, had the playground represented on this papal medal created in 1924. The casting depicts the location of the Oratory in the shadow of St. Peter Basilica, with the dome of Michelangelo in the background. #KnightsofColumbus #KofC @kofc_official #VisitFromHome (at United States) https://www.instagram.com/p/CODJV2jjHfT/?igshid=jh5x7l9ti9eo

Reposted from @fathermcgivney When reflecting in his Apostolic Letter “Patris Corde,” Pope Francis describes St. Joseph’s attributes always in communion with him being a father. In his every action, St. Joseph accepted the responsibility to steadfastly watch and protect his family. This model of fatherhood has led St. Joseph to be venerated as the patron of fathers, continuing to care for and guide families as seen in this April 1976 Columbia magazine cover by William Luberoff. May we follow Joseph and be driven with a father’s heart. #YearofStJoseph #StJoseph #VisitFromHome (at Florida, USA) https://www.instagram.com/p/CNqxZNtjhXz/?igshid=blrmq07lhhi4

Reposted from @fathermcgivney Today is World Down Syndrome Day, a day that has been observed by the United Nations since 2012. It occurs annually on March 21st in recognition of the 21st chromosome, of which there is three in a baby born with Down syndrome, rather than two. Throughout the world, people organize and participate in events to help raise awareness advocating for the rights, inclusion, and well-being of people with Down syndrome, including the Special Olympics. Between 1995 & 2015, over 500,000 people with Down syndrome participated in the Special Olympics around the world. Since the Special Olympics inception in 1968, the Knights of Columbus have been actively involved on a global scale. When the 1995 Special Olympics World Games were held in New Haven, Connecticut, where the Knights were founded and are still headquartered, the K of C raised funds and volunteered at events to support the more than 7,200 athletes from 146 countries, the largest athletic event in the world that year. The Games’ logo, depicted on this pin, captures the joyous and active spirit of the Special Olympics and its competitors. #WorldDownSyndromeDay #DownSyndrome #SpecialOlympics #KnightsofColumbus #KofC @kofc_official #VisitFromHome (at United States) https://www.instagram.com/p/CMrqFMljtf2/?igshid=qzid2l5dyjrk
