Sagat — Silver Lining (Vlek)

Brussels based DJ and producer Sagat takes a lurching, gremlin plagued approach to techno on Silver Lining. In place of lush synth pads and easy 4/4 drum patterns, his tracks are stripped back, the rhythms in constant flux, probing and discursive, skittering about like poltergeists intent on small disruptions rather than grand gestures of destruction. Even skirting the edges of more recognizable dance music, Sagat draws in sounds from furthest reaches of the underground. Subdermal bass, itchy machine noise, high frequency blips and beeps that unsettle, dare you find the steps to fit and make you concentrate on the music’s machinations. And yet, for all this, Sagat has produced a record that will get you moving, full of allusion, witty throwdowns and audacious choices.

The album opens with a short interlude, as much as a turning on of the equipment as an orchestral tune up, the frequencies rising as the juice starts flowing. Much of what follows in an inversion of standard club music. The pieces are there but Sagat twists them as if heard from within the circuits. The beats and bass are mixed forward but feel submerged. “Club Gone” hides a post-punk bass line so deep in the mix you feel it before you’re consciously aware of following it.

The smooth beats and static beds of “Barrier” overlay swells of synth that would make Bola and Two Lone Swordsmen proud. You want it to go on and on but after ninety seconds, Sagat segues into the eerie spaceship sounds of “Levels” which resembles Cabaret Voltaire loose in Joe Meek’s tea chest. Throughout Sagat revels in these sleights of hand, secreting easter eggs into his tracks, what sounds like a slowed down heavily reverbed theremin on “Rest”, the 23 Skidoo gamelan in “Chroma,” the Godley and Creme flourishes on  “Corner” and a runaway train going off the rails on “Eyes Open.”  

Cramming 13 tracks into 46 minutes, Silver Lining can feel somehow both too much and not enough. There are times when you wish Sagat had expanded or combined his ideas and let them mutate and others where you’re glad he gets in and out fast, teasing with possibility. In the end his invention wins you over. Sagat expertly balances accessibility and experiment, taking turns where others might stick to the path and it makes Silver Lining a hugely enjoyable and adventurous record.

Oké maar ik was de nos op 3 video over Mark Rutte aan het kijken en ze lieten een kaartje zien van de verkiezingsuitslag van 2012 en er viel me wat op, dus ik ben wat gaan zoeken en vond kaartjes van de uitslagen van 1977 tot 2012 op Wikipedia:

Terwijl de rest van Nederland een beetje wisselde tussen CDA en VVD, hebben de noordelijke provincies en vooral Groningen en Drenthe bijna altijd PvdA gestemd. En ehm dat werpt wel een beetje een nieuw licht op het idee in het noorden dat de politiek in Den Haag niet in ze geïnteresseerd is

Maxime Denuc - Nachthorn - coincidentally stumbled upon another techno-via-pipe-organ album

Nachthorn, for midi-controlled organ Nachthorn takes its name from one of the 78 stops that make up the main organ in St. Antonius Church in Düsseldorf. This instrument, equipped with a system developed by the German company Sinua, offers the possibility of controlling all of its keyboards and timbres via a computer. The organ thus becomes a powerful synthesiser. This set-up allowed me to fulfil an old dream of mine : to create an entirely acoustic dance music piece with the organ as sole actor. Oscillating between dub techno, harmonic locked grooves or after-hours pop, Nachhorn proposes a hypnotic music piece whose lines sketch the outline of an imaginary warehouse. Composed and programmed for midi-controlled organ by Maxime Denuc. Recorded on 5 and 6 May 2021 at St. Antonius Kirche, Düsseldorf-Oberkassel, by Harry Charlier. Artwork by Jonathan Martin. Hoe ironie opeens teder en ontroerend werd

Ik kan me niet herinneren ooit gelachen te hebben bij de laatste zin van een roman – en ik las er veel in mijn leven. Hoe dichter het einde van het boek naderde, hoe meer ik speculeerde over de afloop. Het is een zuivere roman, want ik volg weduwnaar Sy Baumgartner als een onzichtbare schaduw, en tegelijkertijd heb ik me in zijn hoofd genesteld.

Als dat geen klassieke roman is!

Op een stralende septemberdag zet Baumgartner zich tussen het terras en de kornoelje behaaglijk in een tuinstoel. “Hij ademt rustig in en weer uit. In en weer uit, zuigt de lucht door zijn neusgaten naar binnen en blaast die door zijn half geopende mond weer naar buiten, en dan, na een seconde of twintig, laat hij zijn herinneringen komen.”

Ik dacht: dat is een elegante overgang van de schrijver om een ander register op te kunnen trekken!

Een aantal keren breekt hij zijn gedachtenstroom af en blikt omhoog. Hij zoekt een betere stoel, maar gaat weer in de oude zitten, “ langzaam en nauwgezet ademhalend terwijl hij zich afvraagt waar zijn gedachten hem nu weer zullen voeren. [–] En opeens herinnert hij zich zich weer zijn reis naar Oekraïne van twee jaar geleden, een dag die hij zoekbracht in het stadje waar zijn grootvader was geboren.”

Hé, maar die grootvader heet Auster!

Baumgartner staat op en begint aan een verslag van zijn tocht naar Ivano-Frankvisk op 21 september 2017 en het verbazingwekkende verhaal dat een rabbijn hem daar vertelde.

Aha, een verhaal in een verhaal, ook heel klassiek, en natuurlijk in een andere bladspiegel.

Dan is er dat einde van het boek. In rusteloze afwachting van de komst van iemand besluit Baumgartner een eind buiten de stad te gaan rijden. Hij komt in landelijk gebied terecht, krijgt een bijna botsing met een hert. Bij een volgend hert gooit hij het stuur om en knalt tegen een boom. Met een bloedende, maar pijnloze hoofdwond stapt hij uit de auto en besluit naar een huis te lopen. Dan lees ik de laatste twee regels van het boek: “En zo, met de wind in zijn gezicht en het bloed dat nog uit de snee in zijn voorhoofd druppelt, gaat onze held op zoek naar hulp. En als hij bij het eerste huis komt en aanklopt, begint het laatste hoofdstuk uit het levensboek van S.T. Baumgartner.”

'Held', 'levensboek'? Ik schoot in de lach. Maar wacht eens, was niet de schrijver ernstig ziek, en zou dit misschien niet zijn laatste boek kunnen zijn? Opeens krijgt die ironie iets teders en ontroerends. Ik dacht terug aan het allereerste boek van de schrijver, dat ik vijfendertig jaar geleden las en dat zo'n diepe indruk op mij maakte: 'Het spinsel van de eenzaamheid'.

Ik hield als lezer Sy Baumgartner even gezelschap in zijn eenzaamheid. Nu denk ik aan zijn schepper.

In de zonsondergang huist vanavond een kleine zwarte vlek. Voorheen lag hij te slapen naast de brievenbus, in zetels, aan zwembaden uit heel de buurt, in het zachte gras of op de schoot van alle mensen die hem graag zagen.

In de oranjeroze schakeringen ontwar ik zijn omtrekken. Ik spring om hem nog één keer dicht tegen mij aan te trekken en mijn hand verdwijnt tussen in oranje gloed gedipte zwarte haren.
