Description: Leighton meets reader in her math class and is instantly smitten. However, as weeks go on, Leighton sees that the reader's kindness is getting taken advantage of, causing her girl to burn out. Leighton takes matters into her own hands.
WARNINGS: frat guys being dicks, leighton being protective, reader being a smol bean, exhaustion.
leighton murray was about to lose her shit.
in her defense, it's definitely deserved.
and it all has to do with her crush, y/n y/l/n.
y/n  was the sweetest person leighton had ever met. she always said hi to everyone she came across, was always open to listen to anyone's problems, gave great hugs. she even went the extra mile to do people's homework if they needed. her and leighton were in the same math class and got partnered up on a project.
leighton didn't know why but the second she met y/n, she instantly felt a connection to the girl. luckily the two hit it off and had been hanging out ever since. in the short time leighton had been friends with the girl, she had noticed something.
there was a guy in their math class named josh. he was in theta with nico so that's how leighton knew him. she always felt like he was a sleaze ball because he thought he was hot shit. she had noticed over the past week that y/n's homework load seemed to double. and josh seemed to be at every party that leighton and her roommates had gone to that week.
she had tried to get it out of y/n, but the girl just shook it off. leighton was beginning to get frustrated, seeing y/n basically crumble before her eyes. she had to do some more digging.
josh matthews was about to meet his demise and he didn't even know it.
leighton didn't want to expose him at the theta party she was currently at, but after a text from jocelyn with a picture of y/n knocked out at a table, she had enough.
luckily for her, nico still had connections at theta and told her who the president and vice president of the frat were very quickly and her plan was set in motion.
she had talked to both guys in the president's bedroom, leighton providing all the evidence she had on josh not doing his homework. from pictures of him either sleeping in class to pictures of his laptop on netflix during class and pictures of y/n's work (that leighton had taken when the girl wasn't paying attention), showing josh's name written in the corner of one paper and y/n's in the other.
the president and vp took in the evidence, thanking leighton and reassuring her it wouldn't continue or happen again. the blonde thanked them, and rushed downstairs to tell her roommates she was leaving.
she had an adorable nerd to take care of.
leighton made the usual 15 minute walk to the library from theta in 12. she scanned her student id and made her way into the building. she found jocelyn who pointed her in the direction of the sleeping girl. leighton's heart broke and melted at the same time.
y/n was asleep on her math textbook, papers surrounding her. leighton got a good look at the girl's face, seeing how the weeks of double work had caught up to her. she carefully got all of y/n's things together, sliding them in the girl's backpack, shouldering it, before waking up the sleeping girl.
y/n groaned as she opened her eyes, seeing leighton in front of her. she sleepily smiled, feeling groggy. "hi leighton, what are you doing here?" the blonde smiled at the girl, gently helping her up. "i'm taking care of you. now come on, we're going back to my dorm."
leighton guided the girl back to her dorm, occasionally supporting the girl's weight as she sleepily strolled next to leighton. once the two made it back to the dorm, leighton gave her some of her pjs to change into, allowing the girl privacy as she went out to the common room to shoot a text to her roommates.
when leighton went back into her room, y/n was already halfway back to sleep in leighton's bed. the blonde smiled and changed before sliding into bed next to y/n, pulling the girl into her chest. y/n sighed happily and snuggled closer to leighton. "leight?" the blonde hummed, beginning to run her fingers through y/n's hair.
"i really like you. a lot. do you wanna go out?" leighton giggled. "let's get you rested up and then we'll talk about it, okay?" the girl nodded and allowed the grasps of sleep to take her, feeling leighton gently kiss her on the forehead.

Candida Species Identification in Resource-Limited Clinical Settings
Tumblr media
Abstract
Candidiasis is worldwide in distribution, and is one of the common fungal diseases isolated in man, which affects the skin, mucosa and various internal organs. It is caused by various species of Candida, which is a yeast-like fungi that produce pseudohyphae. Speciation helps to understand the epidemiology of Candida species particularly, the source and mode of transmission of resistant pathogens. Various commercially available chromogenic agar medium has been studied and evaluated for presumptive identification of various species of Candida. The present study was conducted for a duration of 12 months from the month of July 2019 to the month of July 2020, in the Department of Microbiology at a medical college in Siddipet, with prior approval of institutional ethics committee. The present study was aimed at isolating and identifying the Candida species from various clinical samples by using chromogenic media for easy and rapid speciation in addition to the time consuming and labour-intensive conventional methods. Among the Candida isolates the most frequently isolated species was found to be Candida albicans. In the present study non-albicans Candida (NAC) (50.91%) had predominance over Candida albicans (49.09%). In our study, an increase in the number of cases caused by NAC was noted though the most common species isolated was Candida albicans. CHROMagar was found to be a simple, easy and also a rapid method for Candida species detection. It considerably reduced the turn-around-time.

Introduction
Candidiasis is worldwide in distribution, and is one of the common fungal diseases isolated in man, which affects the skin, mucosa and various internal organs. It is caused by various species of Candida, which is a yeast-like fungi that produce pseudohyphae. (Apurba S Sastry, Essentials of Medical Microbiology, 3rd Ed) The genus Candida belongs to Phylum: Imperfectii, the Order Moniliales and family Cryptococcaceae. (Chander J. Candidiasis. In: A textbook of Medical Mycology, 3rd Ed.) Candida is a human commensal, but it becomes an opportunistic pathogen because of any pre-disposing factors which impair, immune response to the microorganisms. eg: AIDS, immunosuppressive chemotherapy, metabolic diseases, or cause an imbalance, in favour of fungal microflora e.g., Antibiotics, disrupt the integrity of the integument e.g., intravenous catheters, surgery. The source of infection is mostly endogenous, but in some cases, Candida can be introduced by exogenous sources too (Esther Segal and Daniel Elad. Candidiasis. Topley and Wilson’s Microbiology and Microbial Infections. Medical Mycology. 10thEd.) Fungal infections, especially those caused by Candida species, has significantly increased, in the past decade, in immuno- compromised patients. (Dharmeswari T., 2014)
The conventional method of fungal culture on SDA is tedious and often isolation and detection are difficult in mixed cultures. This led to the use of many chromogenic agar which enables the detection based on colour of the colony. (Baradkar VP, 2010; Moyer GJ, 1995; Murray MP, 2005; Louwagie B, 1995; Odds FC, 1994; Pfaller MA, 1996; Raut SH, 2009). Speciation of various species of Candida is based on the colour of the colony along with other characteristic. This differentiation is facilitated by the presence of chromogenic substrates that produce different pigmentations based on specific enzymes produced by the specific candida species. (Lynn L., 2003)
CHROMagar Candida is of great use in clinical specimens suspected to contain yeast and hence can be used as a medium for primary isolation even in a resource limited setting as it requires less expertise. Moreover, it can act as a differential medium even if candida is isolated from other media like SDA or blood agar. (Odds FC, 1994) Though the biggest limitation of the medium could be the cost but the advantage in reducing the turn-around time can still be of great significance when compared to various conventional methods of identification.
Speciation helps to understand the epidemiology of Candida species particularly the source and mode of transmission of resistant pathogens. (Shaheen M.A, 2006) Conventional methods for speciation are more time consuming and laborious, therefore, in the present study CHROMagar has been used for rapid identification of various species of Candida.
The present study was aimed at isolating and identifying various Candida species from clinical samples by using chromogenic media for easy and rapid speciation in addition to the time consuming and labour-intensive conventional methods.

MARCHESSAULT WINS STANLEY CUP AND CONN SMYTHE
Tumblr media Tumblr media
By: Gerry Cantlon, Howlings HARTFORD, CT - When he was a member of the Connecticut Whale, Jonathan Audy-Marchessault was a diamond in the rough. Marchessault was playing for the Quebec Remparts in the QMJHL, learning his craft under the recently-retired Memorial Cup-winning head coach, Patrick Roy, over a dozen years ago. The New York Rangers signed Marchessault as an undrafted free agent in 2010 along with his junior teammate and fellow Connecticut Whale alumni, the just-retired Kelsey Tessier. Another of Marchessault's junior and CT Whale teammates was retired forward Ryan Bourque. Marchessault finished second in scoring on the initial CT Whale squad with 24 goals and 64 points. The Rangers thought he was going to be strictly an AHL player. They got that wrong. The Columbus Blue Jackets took a chance on Marchessault the following season and sent him to the AHL Springfield Falcons. Machessault's anger and frustration were apparent when he explained why he signed and agreed to go to Springfield in a Howlings interview. "It's total BS. I'm second in scoring on the team (Kris Newbury was first) and the Rangers didn't offer me any NHL money in a new contract. I had signed for just a year. They just offered another AHL deal. Total BS. I will get to the NHL and win the Stanley Cup. Signing with Columbus may be my fastest route," Marchessault scornfully declared then. Marchessault is the first undrafted player (signed with the WHA Indianapolis Racers with a personal services contract, or he would have been a Montreal Canadiens draft pick) since Wayne Gretzky in 1988 to win a Conn Smythe Trophy. He scored ten goals that either gave Vegas the lead (six times) or tied the game (four times) during the 2023 Stanley Cup Playoffs. He is just one of three players in the last 35 years to score a goal in the first three games of the Stanley Cup Final. The Rangers weren't the only team to misjudge Marchessault's talent. After one year with Columbus/Springfield and not getting an opportunity, he then signed the following year with the Tampa Bay Lightning. Marchessault got in his initial NHL playing time with 47 games over two years but spent most of his three years with the organization in Syracuse. "Marchie's" journey then crossed the Sunshine State when he signed with the Florida Panthers. He received his first solid NHL playing time a had a 30-goal campaign six years ago. When the Vegas Golden Knights came into the NHL as a franchise, Marchessault was left exposed by the Panthers and was taken by Vegas in the expansion draft. The Panthers' decision to leave Marchessault exposed amazingly came about because the franchise decided to protect two other players, both no longer in the organization, Alex Petrovic (Dallas) and Mark Pysyk (Buffalo), who was coming off his worst defensive year at minus-21. Marchessault never wavered or accepted no for an answer - ever. Marchessault was on a two-year deal with the Panthers at a cap-friendly $750K. The following year, he signed a five-year extension for $30 million that expires next year. It also included a modified no-trade clause. He then becomes a UFA. Since he arrived in the Nevada desert, the 32-year-old has not been a minus player since, as one of the original six Golden Knights, who all started the Cup-clinching game. Naturally, who scored Vegas's first goal of the series…Marchessault. The Connecticut connections in Vegas are numerous. Their backup goalie, Jonathan Quick (Hamden/AOF), Chandler Stephenson, is the nephew of Bob Stephenson, a former Hartford Whaler. Ex-Ranger Brett Howden played for three years in New York. A trio of ex-Whalers, assistant coach John Stevens Sr., goalie coach Sean Burke who did a superb job with Conn Smythe consideration former Springfield Falcon, Aidin Hill, whose first pro game was against the Wolf Pack, and Murray Craven, is a Senior VP of Operations. Vegas' Team President is former New Haven Nighthawk and Ranger George McPhee. Scouts include ex-Whaler Jim McKenzie (Pro Scout), Connor Jones (Amateur Scout) is a former Quinnipiac University/Bridgeport Sound Tigers/and the grandson of former New Haven Blade Terry Jones) standout and ex-Whaler, Alex Godynyuk (European scout). Florida had ex-Yale Bulldog goalie Alex Lyon, ex-Pack/Ranger Marc Staal, former Sound Tiger Carter Verhaeghe, former Whaler coach, head coach Paul Maurice, and ex-Pack Sylvain Lefebvre as the Panthers assistant coach. Pro Scouts Sean Backman (Cos Cob/Yale Univ./Sound Tigers/AOF) and P.J. Fenton (son of Nighthawk/Whaler Paul Fenton) Two special advisors to the team GM, former Nighthawks coach Rick Dudley and former New Haven Nighthawks and Whalers player PJ's father, the aforementioned Paul Fenton. Marchessault now has a Stanley Cup ring and was voted as the Conn Smythe Trophy with the Golden Knights with the second most points of 25, just one behind Jack Eichel. Quebec City got its Stanley Cup from the Cap-Rouge native, a suburb of the city and hopes Marchessault remembers his declaration and parades the Cup it in front of the iconic Frontenac Hotel along the Quebec City elevated promenade, aside from the St. Lawrence River. He now joins the pantheon of great Quebec French-Canadian high scoring forwards the game has had from Guy Lafleur, Mike Bossy, Mario Lemieux, Maurice "The Rocket" Richard, Marc Tardif, Andre "The Magician" Lacroix (ex-Whaler), Marcel Dionne, and Real "Buddy" Cloutier. Not taking no for an answer paid off handsomely for Marchessault. NAHL DRAFT The NAHL-North American Hockey League held the last junior draft mid-week, two weeks before the NHL Draft in Nashville at the end of the month. Taken from Connecticut first, the draft pick El Paso initial was James Mallozzi (New Canaan), selected from Westchester U-16 (T1EHL) in the second round (38th overall) by the Danbury Hat Tricks. Danbury's first round (26th overall) was Ethan Farrow, then Jack Wuertz in the second round (36th overall). Tamás Tóth, from the CT Jr. Rangers (NCDC), who played for the Hungary WJC Division Group 1A team, was taken by the Maryland Black Bears. Matt Alberti, from Salisbury School, was selected in the third round (71st overall) by Janesville (WI) Jets, and Evan West was taken by the Chippewa (WI) Steel, third round (84th overall), a former Danbury Jr. Hat Trick. In the fourth round (123rd overall), Danbury took Marius Angelin from Potomac (USPHL Premier), coached by ex-Pack Josh Gratton. The pick belonged to the Amarillo (TX) Wranglers. Then Roman Winnicki was taken in the fifth round (172nd overall) as the Hat Tricks took him from their NA3HL team and was originally an El Paso draft choice. Jakub Krizan, from Czechia of the Selects Academy at SKP (South Kent Prep), went in the fifth round, 150th overall, and Jack Keane, in the sixth round, 164th overall, was taken by Danbury. Then the Maine Nordiques took Lucas DiChiara of Fairfield in the sixth round (172nd overall). The pick originally belonged to the Johnstown (PA) Jets. Then in the sixth round (190th overall), Geno Carcone was taken by Danbury from Des Moines (USHL). The pick was from the Lone Star (TX) Brahmas. Then seventh round (196th overall), Jacob Ingstrup was selected by Minot (ND) and the Kent School Lions. Then Danbury took Matt DellaRusso (Darien) from the St. George's School (RIPREP). In the ninth round (281st overall), the Minnesota Wilderness took Jack Roberts from the Kent School. The final selection in the 10th round (313th overall) was Michael Murtagh, formerly of The Frederick Gunn School (Washington, CT), playing for the Nanaimo Clippers (BCHL). NOTES: The Rangers hired their new bench boss, who played 12 games in 1988-89 for the Blueshirts in his playing days and two seasons for the Binghamton Rangers, who were relocated to Hart City in 1997. He has now coached six Metropolitan Division teams; NY Islanders, Hurricanes, Washington, Hurricanes, and Flyers. The Rangers announced assistant coach and former Wolf Pack assistant Gord Murphy had been dismissed, and Kris Knoblauch would be back in Hart City. Former Sound Tiger Matt Donovan returns to the AHL from Adler Mannheim (Germany-DEL) and signs with the Chicago Wolves. Lochlan Tetarenko, the son of Beast of New Haven defenseman Joe Tetarenko, signs with Saskatoon (WHL), who drafted him last year from Okotoks (AEHL). The Bridgeport Islanders' defenseman Connor McCarthy, signs with HC Banska Bystrica (Slovakia-SLEL). He split the season between Bridgeport and Worcester (ECHL). Ex-Whaler Mark Hunter of London Knights (OHL) won GM of the year, and Bridgeport Islanders Matt Maggio won the OHL Red Tilson regular season MVP award. HARTFORD WOLF PACK HOME Read the full article

Ben Bruce Deletes His Tweet After Being Called Out By Former World Bank VP Media mogul and former Senator, Ben Murray Bruce has deleted his tweet after being called out by former Vice President of the World Bank, Aruma Oteh over a claim he made about Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi. #benmurraybruce had shared a video on #twitter claiming that #peterobi had endorsed Presidential candidate of Peoples Democratic Party, #atikuabubakar at the Nigerian Bar Association conference they attended on Monday August 22. Reacting to this, #arumaoteh stated that this goes against the #CommonSense series which Ben Murray initiated and carried on with for years. The former World Bank Executive added that she had assumed Bruce would be one of those encouraging an issue-based campaign and not a misinformation-based campaign. “Bossypants” by Tina Fey: A pre-view
Luigina Cecchina-Tarquina
Assoc. Lifestyle Contributor
When I picked up Tina Fey’s book, I knew little more of her reputation than as a female comedian. I expected a chuckle and some depiction of a woman’s take on the world of hollywood success — I would not have expected to come across a racist book that struggles to relay a single joke while recounting the life of a southern woman’s bygone teenage years, but then, what would one expect from a cast member of “saturday night live”.
For those who are even aware of Saturday Night: Live (SNL), it is common knowledge that Tina Fey, and saturday night live for that matter, are controversial figures in american media. It seems to be a split right down american society: people who find Tina Fey “L-O-L” funny, and people who find her humour unsufferable; people who tolerate the blatant racism of snl and 30rock as “satire,” and those who have had enough of the denigration, minstrels, slurs, and tropes for cheap comedic effect.
I know Tina Fey is a comedian — a clown — and sets out to prick peoples ears and widen people’s eyes. To quote another comedy critic, I do not seek to come off as someone wilfully misunderstanding humour and repeatedly not getting the joke.
Yet the illusion of that decision is for those who do not remember that Bill Murray had a sketch on snl, where he dreamed about “turning from ‘brown’ to ‘white’”, and the more recent habit of snl writers hiring minorities as comedians to attack themselves on the show with slurs, because it would look less objectionable than if the writers denigrated those actors or people themselves. In Tina Fey’s book, she states that “As a Greek,” she would “only date a ‘white’ man, such as a redneck” inexplicably fond of camouflage.
But to quote that same critic again, humour has a goal; It has an audience. When engineered to subvert expectations and play to the common denominator, jokes have a base which they are founded upon. If that baseline for the comedian or writer, like Fey, is a bedrock of deep-seated racism, which the comedian exploits rather than lampoons, it is no longer a humorous observation, but a cheap, racist ploy servicing an already receptive racist base.
Tina Fey saying she would only date in a certain imaginarily-defined group is racist. Full stop.
Fey going on to say she would date even the lowest, “redneck,” in that category, before anyone else in the world is not less racist — as Fey probably expected her statement to be received (by deprecating people of European-descent with ethnic slurs like “redneck” or “hillbilly” or “honche”, rather than solely praising their racist memes) — but it is more racist, as Fey is simultaneously using racism to make fun of her suitors, and again using racism to elevate even them above anyone and everyone else.
Not to “belabour the point,” as Fey would appreciate, or focus on one bad joke: but Fey’s joke is playing to long-festered notions of racism, colonialism, and rogue supremacism, which Fey buys into rather than challenges, where Fey herself puts (1) any “Aryans” above (2) rich Europeans, (3) Greeks above poor Europeans, and (4) poor Europeans above (5) the rest of the living world. It is inane — and stupid — but a strongly held delusion among groups (1) through (5), and probably strongest among groups (2) to (4).
Fey happily plays with this unholy flame of racism, undergirded by genocide in her native South, fuelled by the segregation in Fey’s own high school, and leaving embers of anti-marriage laws across the American East.
That is not to say racism, colonialism, genocide, holocaust, mob rule, political repression, et alia, are not to be joked about — they are the most popular comedic material in the United States (even if only in the United States). But these topics are deadly serious, and not as distant and abstract as we would like them to be.
There is a real possibility, given their frequency and recency, that anyone who read the first edition of Fey’s book, or attended same secondary school, committed a hate crime, using the exact same rhetoric Fey employs as a “joke.” Not only that, Fey never says it is a joke — there is no punchline.
The only reason I give Tina Fey the benefit-of-the-doubt and assume she was not serious about what she said is because the statements where so outrageous and absurd that someone would have to be insane to print them in sincerity, and equally as ungracious to print them even in jest.
Nonetheless, it was never expected to have to wrestle with these issues, which Fey has ill-managed, in a comedy memoir. Maybe if it had to do with Fey’s experiences or personal identity (as “German–Greek”?) it would have a more natural place. That is, if Fey had been the victim of racism, and condemned it, even through humour, that would be expected, cool, and fine. Fey calls herself “Greek,” but only tongue-in-cheek, and it’s apparent she doesn’t speak Greek. Fey calls herself “German,” but only in relation to being American, and it’s apparent she doesn’t speak German.
What we learn is not how Tina Fey suffered racism, but her experience in adopting racism itself. It offends the senses, and anchors the book.
While hardly intended to win over the intellectual crowd, some of Fey’s items over the years cannot be ignored. Conventional culture, and Fey herself, would seem to agree, after the firing of certain snl comedians and the pulling of certain 30rock episodes, that just went too damn far.
This puts Fey in the precarious position of defending her legacy of racist and baiting comedy, and that of her colleagues, as now she has been outed as admitting herself that she has crossed the line on several, several occasions. But does that mean that Fey is accommodated now that she has made a partial apology? Or is that the mere beginning of scrutiny now that critics have gotten their first concrete admission of her failure?
Fey, and many of her cultivation, say such racist things in order to just have meaningless fun, or in order to make fun of the racist. While Fey and the others may consider this to be in good fun, and an inclusive way to overcome racism, at the end of the day you have subtly racist comedians repeating the words of violently racist hate-mongers for the entertainment of an audience often apathetic to the realities of racism. That is to say, with such willingness to commonly, repeatedly, and recklessly embrace such a serious topic, they can miss the mark.
The impulse may be that racism is so at the heart of American culture and popular life that it is expected that a pop culture figure embrace it (similar to why comedians talk so much of ornery subjects such as politics), and that they should not be taken seriously as comedic plays on the feelings of the populace.
However, comedy is nothing if it does not play to the sentiments of the crowd, and the cover of the clown mask is a poor excuse for crude thinking. In Fey’s apology for racist comedy sketches on her show 30rock, she echoed a previous comedians apology, David Letterman, when she said that intent is less important than perception when that perception causes innocent people pain. In Letterman’s statement (on a different subject), Letterman also says it is not about intent but perception that forced his apology and goes so far to say that if you must explain a joke, it wasn’t that funny anyway, so there is no sense in defending it.
Elizabeth Xenakes Fey, or Tina, has been a supporter of progressive movements in the country, but it should not be overstated to what extent, nor should the virtue of this support be overstated. Fey’s famous endorsements of Barack Obama versus John McCain, and of Hilary Clinton versus Donald Trump, and moreover her critical statements of Sarah Palin’s alliance to both McCain and Trump, have been definitive to her identity as a good liberal and progressive person who supports women’s advancements.
Yet, so too did the majority or Americans. It is not a controversial stance to support the candidate that won the popular vote of a national election — and, sadly, many racist people, both aware and unwitting, also vote for so-called “progressive” candidates for different reasons, despite their problematic stances. That is to say, being a Democrat is not exculpatory of anything. It should also be noted that Fey endorsed Clinton over Obama in the primary, and refused to endorse Bernie Sanders (or Clinton) in the next primary, and Fey describes herself and her works as “neutral,” rather than progressive.
Fey’s most famous work in comedy, the impersonation of Sarah Palin wasn’t as scathing as one might expect of a true critic, but was in many cases humanising, and even flattering. Fey was not kind in undermining the Tea Party spokesperson, but Palin was made out to be an odd yet loveable figure, rather than a contemptible one: she was written off. As Fey’s alter ego said herself, ‘it would be egotistical for saturday night live (or anyone else) to believe that a couple of jokes swung the 2008 election.’
Tina Fey has many hard questions to answer for racist depictions in her sketches, television series, and book — and it is not so easy a dodge to say that she once ‘made fun of Sarah Palin.’ Another reviewer stated, “I don’t think Fey comes off as a bad person, I just don’t think she’s funny.” Tina Fey doesn’t come off as a good person, or a bad person, but just presents as an ordinary person, and whether you find Tina Fey (or mor importantly, any of her jokes) funny is a personal and indeterminable matter.
I watched a few of Fey’s “world-famous” skits for this review, and I admit I did mistake Sarah Palin for Fey in their cross-over cameo skit; And the moment I laughed the hardest (in fact the only moment I laughed through the skits) was during the VP Debate Sketch with her fellow southerner, Jason Sudeikis, where “Biden” repeatedly attacked Scranton, Pennsylvania as “the worst place on Earth” — so again, people react to comedy in an unpredictable way, as a basis of personal experience. I don’t think all of Fey’s jokes make it, yet no one can singularly define anything as “funny,” or not, but I do see her as a professional on screen. I don’t give a pass however on bad interest jokes, especially on the mere basis of not liking Donald Trump (who, remember, is also a television celebrity who has worked in comedy, and made jokes that were blatantly racist — and sexist).
Entering Fey’s book, “Bossypants”, with this pre-review (re-preview?) in mind, it introduces to me that this memoir may turn to places unexpected, and that just because it is a celebrity-text does not mean it will be a simple, casual, or homey, ride.

What happens if Trump, as the GOP nominee, dies before the election? Do people vote for Pence because suddenly he's running for POTUS? Does the party pick someone else? If it's Pence for POTUS, does he pick a running mate for VP? Sorry, I know nothing!
In normal times and assuming there was enough time before Election Day, the party would have to meet and follow their rules for nominating a new candidate. Obviously, these are not normal times. Even if the pandemic wasn’t still raging, there would probably not be enough time at this point to logistically get a new candidate on all of the ballots in all of the states. It would be even more difficult this year because so many ballots have already been printed, mailed out, and even completed and returned by voters. So, at this point, the solution would probably be for everything to move forward as it is and to settle the issue after Election Day and prior to the meeting of the Electoral College in December. The exact logistics of how voters would cast their ballots would differ from state-to-state since there’s no national, uniform election process.
There is some precedent for this potentiality. In 1872, Horace Greeley, the Liberal Republican and de facto Democratic nominee for President died 24 days after Election Day. Greeley’s death took place prior to the meeting of the Electoral College in each state, however. While Greeley lost the election to President Grant, he was expected to receive 66 Electoral votes. When the Electoral College eventually met, the Electors that were pledged to Greeley were scattered among several different people. Three Electors still cast their ballots for Greeley, but when the Joint Session of Congress met to certify the election, those votes were invalidated since a dead person is Constitutionally ineligible to be elected President.
Another example from history that might act as a precedent if this hypothetical situation were to occur is that of Vice President James Schoolcraft Sherman. In 1912, President William Howard Taft and Vice President Sherman were renominated by the Republicans. However, Vice President Sherman died in office less than a week before Election Day. There was definitely not enough time for the Republicans to convene and formally nominate a replacement or for states to make a change to the ballots. The Republican Party announced that Columbia University president Nicholas Murray Butler would be designated as the person to receive any Electoral votes won by the Taft ticket. On Election Day, President Taft came in a distant third to Democratic nominee Woodrow Wilson and former President Theodore Roosevelt, who had sought election as a third-party candidate. The Taft/Sherman ticket only received 8 votes from the Electoral College, and the votes that would have gone to Vice President Sherman were cast for Butler.
At this point in the election cycle, if the President were to die, I think the GOP would probably just make it clear that they’d put forward Pence to receive the Electoral votes for President when the Electoral College met. That doesn’t necessarily mean that all of the Electors would cast their ballots for him, but there are Faithless Electors who sometimes give their votes to people other than the candidate that the Electors from their state were pledged to support. So, I think the Republican Party would have to work hard to educate their supporters and their eventual Electors on the process and the potential consequences if Electors didn’t cast their Presidential votes for the intended candidate. I’m pretty sure that they’d have to be careful that the Electors didn’t cast both their Presidential and Vice Presidential votes for the same person when the Electoral College met because that could result in both ballots being disqualified. They’d have to ensure that the Vice Presidential votes in the Electoral College went to anybody else. If they won the election and the Republicans were organized enough to consolidate support in the Electoral College for a replacement Vice Presidential candidate to receive the 270 votes necessary, that person would be elected VP when Congress certified the results. If not, and the Electoral votes were scattered amongst several potential candidates like what happened with Greeley’s intended votes in 1872 but Pence won enough Electoral votes to be President, then there would be a vacancy in the Vice Presidency as soon as Pence was inaugurated as President, and he would have to nominate a VP who would need to be confirmed by a majority of the U.S. House of Representatives and the U.S. Senate.

There is a spotlight on Foxconn which made a big splash for Trump at the start of his presidency. The company has done a lot of nothing but still gets tax cuts. When will weed be legal on a federal level? When will drug testing for employment be illegal? We hear so much about personal rights with the gun laws and vaccines and masks. What about the right to do what we want with our bodies when we are not at work. Think of the administrative costs that could be saved if we just removed drug testing. Our experience and work ethic should mean more that what we do with our free time. This is not a problem at all companies. There are places in this country where it is near impossible anywhere in your area to get hired without a drug screening. One joint on a random Saturday night could keep someone from a great opportunity. A person in pain who reaches for an edible might miss out on the job that saves their lives.

The Oscars were held on April 25. It was a bit of a yawner and why would a show set themselves up for an awkward end?? There was a commercial from P&G right before the broadcast that stated, “ Widen the screen so we can widen our view.” Nice sentiment.  Mank had so many noms and only 2 wins. People looking their best to me were Leslie Odom Jr., Glenn Close, Riz Ahmed, LaKeith Stanfield, Colman Domingo, John Batiste, Mia Neal, Questlove (gold crocs and a mask!), Desmond Roe, Travon Free, Trish Summerville, Marlee Matlin, The Lucas Brothers, Andra Day, Carey Mulligan, Amanda Seyfried, Nicolette Robinson, Regina King and Margot Robbie. Laura Dern looked like Big Bird, there were just too many feathers. Tiara Thomas had feathers but they looked great.  Angela Bassett had some power sleeves and Tyer Perry looked like a little boy.  Hooray for Emerald Fennell for her win for original screenplay but not sure about the dress. And Viola Davis?? Dana Murray?? Ashley Fox?? Hmm?? Winners seemed to have trouble getting to the stage. They often refused the steps or the walkway and sort of climbed up the side. I did love the intimate setting and it did remind me of the old clips of years before. Sound of metal and Ma Rainey both won. Tyler Perry and for the first time, an organization, the motion picture and television fund, took home the humanitarian award. I was thrilled to see My Octopus Teacher win for Doc. I loved Crip Camp too, that was a hard category.  The acting winners went in all directions.  Many critics complained that the films were real downers . Nomadland won best picture. Michael Moore put it best I think. Of the films this year, he said, “They force you to look backward with 2021 eyes.”
