The banners went up today for our new exhibit!
“Power & Light: Russell Lee’s Coal Survey” features more than 200 of Russell Lee’s photographs of coal miners and their families.
The man on the banner is Harry Fain, who was working as a coal loader for Inland Steel Company in Wheelwright, Kentucky, in 1946. He and his family appear in photographs throughout the exhibit.
“Power & Light” is free and opens to the public on March 16 in the Lawrence F. O’Brien Gallery in the National Archives Building in Washington, DC.

Nalinee the teenager photographer of the smiths..
Nalinee Darmrong was just 17 years old when she started taking pictures of the Smiths on tour. It was 1985, the peak of the British rock band’s brief career, which acrimoniously ended in 1987.
How did you start photographing them?
For high school graduation, my friend got me my first ticket to the Washington, DC, show. After the show, we were like, let’s go to [the Smiths’] hotel and hang out all night and wait to see them. In the morning, we went into a cafe in the hotel and met them, and they were amazing. Johnny Marr, the guitarist, put us on the guest list for New York. After those shows, the band was comfortable with us and trusted us. Photography really wasn’t my focus at all; it was more like an accessory: “I have this, I’m gonna use this and see what happens.”
Tumblr media
“They were all a little hungover,” Darmrong says.
My experience of Morrissey—he was hilarious. He had the best dry wit, he was very gregarious. He was so happy to talk to fans and so grateful, and so humble. With Johnny—super, ultracool guy then and now.
Tumblr media
"That picture is from what I call the magic roll," says Nalinee Darmrong, the photographer. "It just shows the dynamic between Morrissey and Johnny."
I was shooting the whole time, and Johnny kept winking and smiling at me and I was like ‘Why is he doing that?’ And later he comes up to me and is like, ‘Did you get any good pictures?’ And I was like ‘Yeah!’ and he goes ‘Not of us, of Mick Jagger. He was sitting right behind you.’ I had no idea.”
Tumblr media
“The crew and the band were like family”
(I extracted all the information from various magazine articles around the internet.)
(I would die a million times to be her.)

WUPDATE: Desecrate
Tumblr media
𝚆𝚎𝚍𝚗𝚎𝚜𝚍𝚊𝚢, 𝙼𝚊𝚛𝚌𝚑 𝟼𝚝𝚑 || 𝙱𝙴𝚃 𝚈𝙾𝚄 𝚃𝙷𝙾𝚄𝙶𝙷𝚃 𝙸 𝙵𝙾𝚁𝙶𝙾𝚃
sorry for stepping away for a few weeks, there were a couple things happening in my life that required my full attention!
BUT I'M BACK!!! (a lil bit late BUT THAT'S OKAY) and I come with news!
I was accepted into Lavender Con! It's a new book convention in Washington, DC that's coming up in June! I will be attending as an author with 2 days of signing time for Call Me Icarus! I will also be bringing a couple proofs of Incorrect Eyes, I might even give them out as ARCs!!
Incorrect Eyes is entering revisions! I stopped working on it for a few weeks to let it ruminate while some alpha readers looked at it. Not all of my readers have come back to me at this point, but I have enough feedback that I want to start working on it and get it rolling!
Desecrate is entering re-writes! I have a decent amount written from last spring when I used Desecrate as my final project for Starting A Novel. Since then, I have changed a lot of things including the entirety of Kit's personality, so the story is going into full re-writes!
I have a new project on my plate! I had the idea for a cozy fantasy that I would love to work on in the background as a way to sort of decompress from my heavy hitters (a.k.a. my stories about: rebellion & revolution, paranoia & body horror, and the deconstruction of religion & religious trauma). This is a background work so I don't wanna talk too much on it, but i'm very excited about it!!
I think that covers most of what's going on! I spent a lot of time developing a (nearly 10k word) plot outline for desecrate and we're going back in from square one!
But I know y'all are here for the snippies:
snippies are going to be a little bit different moving forward now that the news of tumblr feeding our posts to AI has come out. I've already opted out of this happening again, but just in case tumblr is a soulless corporation (it is), I am still going to remain cautious. That means the snippies I share will now be from early drafts of my stories and will not be the same as they appear on page. They might also be shorter! but I don't want to stop sharing all-together
from desecrate:
Kit feels emotions thick in the back of his throat as he walks through the home. Everything has been left untouched, covered by a light layer of dust from the year of vacancy. It’s a good thing he doesn’t have a lot to move in, there isn’t much room left. “Whoa, are these all you?” Benny asks from across the room. Ah yes, the Kit wall. His mother had installed it in the house before they moved to the city, leaving his papa here alone. It’s the far wall of the living room and it’s filled with hundreds of photos, all of him from the time of his birth up until the day they moved about a decade ago. Kit walks over to join Benny just as Father Isaac comes up behind them, resting his hands on their shoulders (Kit & Benny are shoulder to shoulder w/ father Isaac between then but behind them family portrait style). His eyes scan over his youth photographed before him. Pictures of him as an infant in the frilly dresses his mom made him wear, pictures from every year of ballet he did, pictures from ever sport he ever participated it. “Oh my God!” Benny gasps. “Kitty, you never told me that you were a cheerleader?” In her hand is a picture from 8th grade, the year before they moved. The year before kit’s life changed. A pang of sadness resounds through Kit’s heart as he looks at the picture. He was happy, truly happy then. He misses those much simpler times when he didn’t know who he was but that didn’t matter, that didn’t stop him from doing what he loved to do with the people he loved.

HC: States write a magazine
•Loui has a weekly recipes page solely for when people are too drunk to cook. Usually this will be ungodly creations Florida requested after they've been drinking.
•NY is a surprisingly positive Broadway and fashion critic. His intense knowledge of fashion, textiles, theatre history, acting methods, lighting and music still confuses the states sometimes.
•A puzzle page made by Hawaii, Mew Mexico and Puerto Rico but none of the answers are in English, purely for spite.
•Florida tried advertising his own vacations, but most of it had to be cut out bc the publisher didn't grasp the concept of Florida representing a state and thought it was weird that a guy was advertising himself as hot, wet and fun for all the family.
They made another advertisement using photos of Florida's map and landscapes which made him self-conscious because it's his "worst angle".
The publisher was last seen on Thursday and almost everyone blames Florida.
•Cali wrote a political piece about the dangers of climate change but it was cut because he spiralled into a rant about wealth disparity and capitalism. In the end it was longer than the magazine itself so they gave the politics column to Texas. Annoyed, Cali used his discarded work to publish his own book. He even bugged New York to make it a best seller.
•The most controversial page is the scandal column because no one knows who wrote it. The page will consist of one or two photos alongside some speculation of what's happening in the photos (mostly incorrect).
These photos include:
-Gov shredding documents. The description claimed the documents proved DC was a different person and Gov stole his identity. When the news broke Gov was quick to claim he was just committing tax fraud. The states found it more suspicious that he admitted tax fraud so quickly.
-Speculation between Nevada and Idaho after standing really close to each other in a funhouse. Nevada tried to play along with the narrative but Idaho found the original photo and proved it was just the reflection of the mirrors making them look closer... But it also proved Washington was holding Nevada and Idaho told the magazine. The next issue was titled "Washington/Oregon Out. Nevada/Everyone In."
-Utah smiling and giving the middle finger to his neighbours titled "mormon rampage" with accusations Utah was actually a jerk with anger issues. His son told him 🖕 meant good luck.
-A blurred image of Texas falling down the stairs with just the title "Fall's Coming Early For Texas"
-A photograph of Loui at a party without Florida when he was supposedly "too sick to hangout".
-A selfie of Florida pouring and burning Loui's daiquiris in "Revenge". In reality Florida split his own drink and messed with a sparkler because no one was supervising him.
-A photograph of Cali on fire because of Florida.
-A frame of security camera footage of Florida and Loui "hiding" in a closet. Turns out that's what they were doing to avoid punishment from Gov.
-A photo of Mass, NY and NJ bonding through "gardening" with the publisher's leg in their wheelbarrow. The states didn't care at that point because the source lost credibility.
Many of the states dislike the constant harassment and lack of privacy but it's unclear who is doing it. This has caused multiple fights but no one knows who could possibly be holding a camera around them all the time without them noticing...

Events In The Life And The History Of Elvis Presley Today On The 21st December In 1970 Elvis Presley Met President Richard Nixon at The Whitehouse in Washington DC.
Elvis Presley paid a visit to President Richard M. Nixon at the White House in Washington, D.C. The meeting was initiated by Elvis Presley, who wrote Nixon a six-page letter requesting a visit with the President and suggesting that he be made a ‘Federal Agent-at-Large’ in the Bureau of Narcotics and Dangerous Drugs. The events leading up to and after the meeting are detailed in the documentation and photographs included here, which include Elvis Presley’s handwritten letter, memoranda from Nixon staff and aides, and the thank-you note from Nixon for the gifts (including a Colt 45 pistol and family photos) that Elvis Presley brought with him to the Oval Office. After lunch in the White House mess and a tour of the White House, Elvis Presley was presented with the BNDD badge by BNDD deputy director John Finlator at White House aide Bud Krogh’s office. Finlator promised to send along additional credentials
Elvis Presley arrived in Washington and was picked up at the airport.
He dropped off his letter to the president at 6.30 a.m. Then he checked into the Hotel Washington again. Elvis Presley tried to get in touch with the BNDD’s director John Ingersoll. This failed, but there was a call from President Nixon’s deputy counsel, asking Elvis Presley to meet him in 45 minutes at the Old Executive Office Building on the White House grounds. There Elvis Presley Sonny and Jerry met with President Nixon. To everyone’s surprise, except for Elvis Presley ’ , they really hit it off, and Elvis Presley left the following day with that what he came for: the BNDD badge.

Hi! Love your blog. I really enjoy Rothko's work and I was curious about your statement that museums over-light Rothkos. My main exposure to Rothko's work is Rothko Chapel in Houston which is quite brightly lit, and I was curious - what in your opinion would be the ideal lighting for Rothko's works in general (if such a question can be answered) as well as for Rothko Chapel? Thanks so much - have a great day!
It's pretty well documented that Rothko wanted the work seen the way he saw it as he painted it. That was close up (18 inches from the painting but take into account Rothko was very nearsighted) and in low light, "Religious Twilight" Stanley Kunitz called it. There are people who attest to this environment who have very firsthand knowledge of the work and explain a feeling that the color comes alive in lower light, penetrating it, sort of night blooming.
For reasons both good and bad, museums do what they want. Rothko did not want frames on any of this paintings but you see them anyway, especially in Europe, where, ironically, the light tends to be lower in the exhibits. To make matters more complicated Rothko was not keen on his work being seen with other work, he wanted one painting alone or a group of paintings alone but that's a highly impractical thing for a lot of museums. The National Gallery In Washington DC has a Rothko room as does the Tate in England, but this is the exception, not the rule.
Some museums really do struggle to stay afloat, people don't like to walk around in darkness where it's hard to see things, practically everything in America is brightly lit, loud and ample. I think there's a desire to give the public what they want that has inevitably resulted in this practice spilling over to museums. To make matters worse, the kind of light museums use (warm or cool, LED etc) affects greatly the presentation of color. This is the reason photographs of Rothkos often swap blue for green or vice-versa.
I'm not an expert in any of this or, sadly, wealthy enough to travel and see every Rothko exhibit. But I think this problem is getting better as art museums, sort of like restaurants, have entered the modern age of forensic examinations and chemistry. New attitudes about restoration have gained a lot of ground, mostly because computers are so sophisticated they allow technology to take a larger role. It's good, I think. A lot of people care about the art and that's where it has to to start. With Rothko, luckily there are some good people working on it including members of his family, who are steering things in the right direction as much as they can. We're going to see some really good reproductions coming out and I think this is due to that kind of care.
As for the Chapel, I have been but not since the renovation. I am told it's very good but will have to experience it myself.
Matters like this are sort of art projects themselves. As we saw in the Harvard Mural restoration, a lot of trouble was gone to to save these damaged works without doing what the used to do for centuries to art which was basically repainting it.
as i have veered off into more than one subject, I'll leave you with an anecdote. I post these on my instagram but have not done it here as I have not been sure of my old guard Tumblr followers wanted the addition of Rothko quotes with the paintings (perhaps they can tell me)
"(Rothko) wanted a dim light for his show at Janis. Janis thought the lighting "made the gallery so dismal, but he wanted some kind of mystery attached to his painting." When Philip Guston accompanied Rothko to one of his shows at the Janis, Rothko turned off half the lights in the gallery."

She loves making things, whether it's art or jewelry or dolls - anything creative is a great outlet for her! - Photography is one of Lilo's great loves. She enjoys taking candids of people when they least suspect it, she likes capturing the humanity in others. She still uses an old fashioned camera where she has to get the film developed, but she also has an instagram dedicated to her work. - Music is an important part of Lilo's life. She's obviously a huge Elvis fan, but just in general she feels like music has saved her life a bunch of times. She loves to listen to records and she loves to dance. She also plays the ukulele. - Lilo is a huge fan of anime and loves to cosplay! She even sometimes makes TikToks in character. She enjoys putting together a costume and playing pretend for a while. - Things like Voodoo have always been intriguing to Lilo. She's constantly reading books and consuming media about witchcraft and similar things. She just finds it fascinating! - Lilo is not a fan of storms. (tw: death) Her parents died in a car accident because of a very bad storm late one night. It's why feeding Pudge the fish his peanut butter and jelly sandwiches is very important to her, since he controls the weather. - She enjoys helping people find what they're good at. She likes getting to know someone and if she can be of help to them should they need it, that makes her extremely happy! - Lilo is not afraid to get her hands dirty. If you come after her, or especially if you come after her family, be prepared to endure her rage. She will go absolutely feral on your ass.

Hidden Herstory: The Leesburg Stockade Girls | National Museum of African American History and Culture
I never fully realized the monumental role that massive numbers of children played in civil rights protests. Law enforcement arrested and jailed children by the thousands for days, and sometimes months, and their involvement helped to enable one of the greatest legal and social assaults on racism in the 20th century—the Civil Rights Act of 1964. The Leesburg Stockade Girls are an incredible example of these courageous, young freedom fighters.
You may ask, “Who were the Leesburg Stockade Girls?” In July of 1963 in Americus, Georgia, fifteen girls were jailed for challenging segregation laws. Ages 12 to 15, these girls had marched from Friendship Baptist Church to the Martin Theater on Forsyth Street. Instead of forming a line to enter from the back alley as was customary, the marchers attempted to purchase tickets at the front entrance. Law enforcement soon arrived and viciously attacked and arrested the girls. Never formally charged, they were jailed in squalid conditions for forty-five days in the Leesburg Stockade, a Civil War era structure situated in the back woods of Leesburg, Georgia. Only twenty miles away, parents had no knowledge of where authorities were holding their children. Nor were parents aware of their inhumane treatment.
A month into their confinement, Danny Lyon, a twenty-one year old photographer for the Student Non-violent Coordinating Committee (SNCC), learned of the girls’ whereabouts and sneaked onto the stockade grounds to take pictures of the girls through barred windows. After SNCC published the photos in its newspaper The Student Voice, African American newspapers across the country printed the story, and the girls’ ordeal soon gained national attention.
Tumblr media

On August 28, 1963, as Martin Luther King Jr. gave his historic “I Have a Dream” speech in Washington, DC,  these children sat in their cell bolstering their courage with freedom songs in solidarity with the thousands of marchers listening to Dr. King’s indelible speech on the National Mall. Soon after the March on Washington, during the same week of the bombing of the five little girls at Sixteenth Street Baptist Church on September 15, 1963, law enforcement released the Leesburg Stockade Girls and returned them to their families.
Their story was part of the broader Civil Rights effort that engaged children in a variety of nonviolent, direct actions. In Alabama, for example, thousands of youth participated in the 1963 Children’s Crusade, a controversial liberation tactic initiated by James Bevel of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC) and led by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. After careful deliberation about the merit of involving children in street protests and allowing them to be jailed, Dr. King decided that their participation would revive the waning desegregation campaign and would appeal to the moral conscience of the nation.
On May 2, 1963, in response to an invitation from Dr. King, roughly a thousand students—elementary through high school—gathered enthusiastically at Sixteenth Street Baptist Church and joined a civil rights march throughout the streets of Birmingham. By day’s end, law enforcement had jailed over 600 children.
Tumblr media

The next day the number of children doubled. However, the training classes provided by SCLC leaders could not have prepared the children for the violence they would encounter. The Commissioner of Public Safety Eugene “Bull” Connor directed the use of fire hoses and attack dogs on the children, and people in America and around the world witnessed this brutality. Authorities arrested nearly 2,000 children—one as young as four years old.  These protests continued throughout the first week of May, with over 5,000 children being jailed.
Within days, SCLC and local officials reached an agreement, in which the city agreed to repeal the segregation ordinance and release all jailed protestors.  Ultimately, the activism of thousands of African American children in 1963, including the Leesburg Stockade Girls, provided the momentum for the March on Washington and contributed to the passage of the Civil Rights Act the following year.
The history of children’s Civil Rights activism continues to be important to tell. The Leesburg Stockade Girls realize this importance, and they are documenting their story. In 2015, as the keynote speaker at a commemorative event for the Leesburg Stockade Girls at Georgia Southwestern State University, I engaged with ten of the surviving women, who shared recollections about the day of their arrest. Remarkably, these women still possess a collective spirit of resistance to social injustice, and they are beginning to embrace their place in history.
As we reflect on their story and the broader history of youth activism, let us consider:  How might children today play an equally significant role in promoting racial equality in the United States?

Was that MAXENCE DANET-FAUVEL? Oh no no, that was just AETHER, a canon character from ( GENSHIN IMPACT ). They are twenty-five years old, use he/him, and are not aware that they are not actually from Washington DC. Too bad they can’t stray from this city for long.
Tumblr media
so this is time for some introduction of my baby Aether, memory and memory-less. I hope y'all are ready for a world of pain, because I definitely am here only for that!
— how long has Aether been here? where has he been pulled from in the fandom?
as far as he knows, Aether has been there for his entire life. born and raised in Washington DC with his family and his sister. he believes to know the entire city by heart, no issue on getting around or anything as such.
in reality, Aether arrived in Washington without any of his memories about a year ago, false memories set in his brain instead at that point. from canon, he comes from the latest archon quest (Akasha Pulse) as the Abyss Prince. (no memories of it as of now)
what is Aether's job?
fake memories, while being more into traveling and going around the world, Aether settled into a more common and calm lifestyle since a few months, he works as a cook in a fast-food restaurant since then. however, he will constantly mention that his dream job is to be an explorer and photographer.
in reality, while not really a job, Aether is the Prince and Commander of the Abyss Order of Teyvat.
has any magic affected Aether?
magic has affected Aether a lot. he doesn't remember anything from his world, only getting strange dreams, nightmares that makes sleeping close to impossible, makes a scar on his chest that strangely looks like a star burn so painfully he can not ignore it.
in his current false memories, Aether believes that his family and he stopped talking years ago, divergence of opinions making it that he had to leave and that he'd now rather not speak to any of them.
any other information
will be added if i get any that come in mind, but none for now. do hmu if you want some connections!

APPEARANCE : dark reddish brown hair; wavy, typically worn up in a knot or braided to keep it out of her face. bright green eyes. noticeable beauty mark on her left cheek. full lips. dimples. HEIGHT & WEIGHT : 5'7" ; 125lbs. BLOOD TYPE : 0+ FC : kate siegel
PERSONALITY : loyal. ● talkative. ● empathetic. ● brave. ● clever. ● creative. ● optimistic. ● impulsive. ● stubborn. ● spirited. ● affectionate. ● quick. ● playful. ● competitive ( to a point; nothing ridiculous. blame it on growing up with two older brothers )
BRIEF ( FOR NOW ) BIO ; PRE-OUTBREAK : born & raised in the islington neighborhood of london, england, emilia is the youngest of three. spending a good portion of her free time down along the canal with her brothers playing pooh sticks and watching the water gives her a keen eye for detail and an appreciation of light and colors, all things that factor into her choice to head to the states for university --- new york city's TISCH to pursue a degree in photography. ideally --- at least the way she saw it --- the goal was always to follow in the footsteps of her idols, female photographers like annie leibovitz and eve arnold. but instead of heading off to the west coast after getting her degree, emilia opts instead to stay in nyc ---- partially because she isn't sure 'that much sunshine' out on the west coast suits a girl who grew up under the grey skies of london, and partially because of christopher, the pre-med student she'd been dating since her junior year. he was staying in the area for his rotations, and wanting to stay with him meant staying on the east coast too. the west coast would always be there, right?
but maybe she should have made the time and effort to go back home to london just one more time... POST-OUTBREAK : the outbreak made going back home impossible ---- and despite efforts to phone her parents and her brothers, she never did manage to get through. part of her wants to hope they're still alive; that they all made it out of the city in time before it was overrun. she needs to believe that somewhere at the end of all this ( if there is an end to all this ) they'll all be reunited. but it's getting more and more difficult to keep that hope alive the longer it all goes on. it certainly doesn't help that she also loses christopher fairly early on in the outbreak --- area hospitals inundated with infected patients resort to lockdowns which end up doing more harm than they do good. she manages to get out of the immediate tri-city area with some other friends, making it as far south as washington dc before she and her friends are separated either through death or more tangible means. after this, she's on her own for the most part until (plotting/verse specific) she finds other survivors to join up with.
