☃️ plotting / starter call for the (now-annual) winter market! ☃️
i mostly adjusted from last year, plus added my new characters! please LIKE this if you want to plot and i’ll shoot you a message (probably on discord) sometime this week; or you can REPLY if you just want to claim a starter with/without plotting.
no starter cap, but there is a date cut-off, which is december *21. i’m not accepting new starter requests after that~
wei wuxian -- starters for: atlas kipling (hiddenangcls), marlene mckinnon (mcrcki), jester lavorre (circleofstarrs), vic weasley (drvcxrys), wen ning (coreofgold), benedict bridgerton (recklcssabandon), ???
last year, he was heavily involved in the snowball fight! he had a good time, but he doesn’t quite have that level of energy in him this year, so he’s probably going to be a little more chill-- but he’ll pitch in to help your character’s team in the snowball fight or snowman building competition if they need a hand. he’ll also be freezing his ass off in the ice bar.
yuri plisetsky -- starters for: caitlyn kiramman (masqce), aj campos (wvsteria), five hargreeves (lcnelyhearted), victor nikiforov (irresistiibles), xiao lanhua (tragcdysewn), addison montgomery (hxartbreaker), doom (youllalwaysbemyporcelain), elizabeth swann (irongcld), lizzie midford (drvcxrys), albus severus potter (recklcssabandon), lan jingyi (coreofgold), ???
yuri was talked into offering FREE ice skating lessons at the ice rink. as a professional ice skater, he will help teach your characters how to successfully navigate the ice; however, he will not be very patient about it, so keep that in mind.
orpheus -- starters for: blue (hiddenangcls), rosemary winters (mcrcki), seth gecko (hxartbreaker), jade west (strwbrrymccn), luke patterson (irongcld), annabeth chase (drvcxyrs), ???
orpheus is running a winter karaoke tent! as long as the song is festive or holiday-ish or winter-ish in nature, the lyrics will be loaded up on the karaoke machine. open for soloists, duets, small groups, whatever! if your character wants to show off their vocal skills, or just enjoy the festive music, drop by. if orpheus catches your character making fun of the singers, though, he’ll be sad and disappointed.
wen kexing -- starters for: steve rogers (svnlvght), zhou zishu (youllalwaysbemyporcelain), emily fields (wvsteria), zhang chengling (coreofgold), ???
last year he mostly spent time painting ornaments and heckling hot santa, and will most likely be indulging in much of the same this year. he will probably also enjoy a carriage ride or two, and would gladly share the carriage with your character.
xie lian -- starters for: josh washington (purelybilateral), shi qingxuan (irresistiibles), tylor tuskman (youllalwaysbemyporcelain), jinx (strwbrrymccn), hua cheng (coreofgold), ???
he may not celebrate these holidays but he really enjoys the warm atmosphere of people coming together to celebrate festivities like this. he’ll be bundled up by the bonfires or oo-ing and aa-ing over the creativity of the snowmen others have built. he might try building a gingerbread house, and after some bartering, he’ll probably be wrapped in a collection of 2-5 handmade scarves from the crafts stalls by the end of the week. **he will also be getting tipsy for the first time in his life, accidentally, due to poorly labelled mulled wine
blathers -- starters for: missandei (wvsteria), jack kline (lcnelyhearted), zhongli (irresistiibles), jeon seol (youllalwaysbemyporcelain), qui-gon jinn (hxartbreaker), xiao xingchen (coreofgold), ???
once again, he will be getting as involved as possible, and with an enthusiastic attitude. if given the opportunity, he will talk to you about anything and everything he has recently witnessed at the market, and i imagine he’ll be spending a lot of time at the hot chocolate and sweets stalls.
he xuan -- starters for: gu chan-seong (strwbrrymccn), stiles stillinski (recklcssabandon), ???
if you see a man dressed in all black seemingly consuming every edible item offered at the market within a one-mile radius, that’s he xuan.
sha hualing -- starters for childe (masqce), nymeria (hiddenangcls), james sirius (svnlvght), diana meade (lcnelyhearted), luo binghe (coreofgold), ???
she wants to try everything, the ice skating, the snowboarding, whatever. she wants to crush the competition at the snowball fight. she will run your character’s sled over with her own, or possibly toss it in the street. she’ll be the fastest person in the polar plunge, even though that is not necessarily a competitive situation lol. she will (unfortunately) be documenting it all on tiktok, and she will also be hanging out around the ice bar.
and then i have a small collection of characters who will NOT enjoy the market, either because they have zero percent festive cheer (most of them don’t celebrate christmas or the january 1 new year anyway) or because they are too stressed to properly enjoy a market like this, or some combination of the two: loid forger, liu qingge, dongfang qingcang, & chu wanning! but they’re still open for starters if you’re interested lol.  -- starters for: yor forger & loid forger (tragcdysewn), ???

The comment I’m passing here is from a reader of the fanfic “https://archiveofourown.org/works/20473640
Comment by fanfic3112 : “
“I adored the chapter and they were sooooo perfect! I love the characters who played Wei and Lan Zhan in untamed and now through this story I couldn't help imaging them in perfect detail! Have you seen the harpers bizarre photo shoot they did or tegu figwort shot that Wei dud with his hair wet and tossed in leather and sun glasses? Or the really gritty shoot they dud in Thailand with red land gold lighting and all dark and shadowy and wang yibo (Lan Zhan) looking just hit as fuck. Wang yibo is so much like Lan Zhan in so many what's with the lack of being bake to match his facial gestures to the hot, quirky, grungy, street punk and sometimes even just cute dance moves but in those photo shoots he just came alive in them. He said he really didn't have very look facial muscles especially around his mouth and so really had to work hard to let his emotions well up in his chest send shine through his eyes but to do the subtle facial moves of Lan Zhan he actually used chop stuck to do exercises to develop more facial movement around hugs mouth sync jaw and I was like damn those chop sticks worked not only on his character in the film but in all of those photo shoots. He definitely got that sexy slow bedroom neck role and looking all sexy under his lashes thing going on. Both him and Wei were yummy you could almost lick then off the screens in the photo shoots. When wang yibo dances he is clearly so single minded and focused and likes all eyes on him because he knows he's so good and that when you get to see something in him behind his sometimes shy or quiet or move stoic look...you get to see what you hit across in one live in this story "I hope Wei appreciates that he is the only person I would ever kneel to. Lan Zhan knows he's capable and tough as shit and revered and try's to distance himself from being smug or prideful but you still see it on his face. Even when wang yibo smilies or laughs in videos he still Cary's this certain Lan zhan quality in his eyes (that constipated bitch face look I love!) but he scan defiantly smilie big when he us with Wei and they were goofing off but it's like over the course of filming he brought wang yibos smiles out more and more but even then after each one you usually see himself looking embassies or self conscious cause he's smirking or embarrassed yes smiling. They were so cute in this story and in untamed!
Yeah seeing untamed added a whole other dimension to the anime, manga, novel translation to me and the characters themselves. Then for the first time I found myself really engrossed in the kazillion bits of social media on them. What interests me so much is how Chinese anime, manga, novels and china itself in terms of history and landscape, Vern the music of Chiba that has that transitional feel used in untamed but also current the music of current bands like the characters who play Wei and Lan Zhan come from (uniq and xnine) but particularly the live wuxian, costume and historical drama. It's so interesting looking at why the whole founder of diabolism package basically opened up china to the world in ways I wonder if even they realize. Up until this last year I had never heard of, nor thought or or gone looking for Chinese anime, live drams, manga or Annie and I've held Annie clubs at middle and high schools abc libraries and taught anime drawing. Korean manga and some anime really only started becoming plentiful over the last two years and it had to do with a change in their laws. The whole china xlposiin of interest and more things showing up and getting dubbed has just blown up. There has to be more still the bottom of it than founder of diabolism had a better marketing plan and used social media better or that it all was just really good BL content although those things are definitely true. I can honestly say there's never been another star ir show from china I could name except the ones now from untamed. And it's not just here in the US, it's in Thailand, Dubai, Japan and multiple countries. It's like china is making itself more known but in a back door soft approach and they chose a BL wuxian drama with some hit young Chinese actors to do it with. Just watching the evolution of the two main characters I have found just as interesting. They have just flooded Twitter Facebook and utube bad from a foreign country that us hard yo get much content out there so it all appears to be licensed and apparently nothing happens in china in terms of film, TV or anime without the government abc the censorship board approving it. I love that untamed actually showed the beautiful scenery and landscape that is reflected in the art work. I always find it interesting how things like this can attract so many people and how the impact can ripple to other areas like tourism dollars, increased fame and money and more opportunities for the actors and writers. I love that but also just find it interesting. On a video Xiao Zhan (Wei) said "it kind of frightens me. I'm trying to stay just me and figure the storm will die down soon but I was really in the past kind of nobody and no one paid much attention to me. Now I've got friends everywhere and they all say they like me but I know that can just disappear anytime so I'm just trying to take the opportunities that come because of the popularity now. I'm prepared to fall back to being nobody again when the tine comes." Which sounded and looked so heartfelt. The interviewer had asked what he thought about all the fans in multiple countries he has now and that was his answer. In the past you just didn't see a zillion twitter comment, Facebook comments and tons if utube vid ribs with interviews and every aspect of their lives shown and tons of cool photo shoots and videos shot all subtitled in multiple languages. In the very recent past there wouldn't be most of that stuff and if you did come across it there wouldn't be subtitles and much of it would be blocked on utube. Of what I did see it just wasn't that good as untamed is. For me it's soldo that they deprecated the characters so well and both seem to be so interesting in their careers compared to America actors and stars. I have a friend that used to like watching the kardashians and I never really got how that was interesting but Xiao Zhan and wang yibo have become my kardashians and now I get why other people found them interesting!”

Celebrities + TV stations, Taobao Live plays the nostalgic card
Tumblr media
For example, the background of the live broadcast room is Shikumen "in the tomato". The anchors Mao Mengda and Wang Yaoqing are teaching the Shanghai nursery rhyme "Selling Sugar Porridge" and telling Shanghai stories on the spot. In addition, they also invited guests from Dragon TV's "My Style My Show" Popular artists such as Yuan Chengjie and Zhu Jie; the product selection is mainly based on old Shanghai domestic brands such as White Rabbit, Xinghualou, Fenghua, and Guangming.
Official data shows that during the 13-hour live broadcast, more than 10 million people watched the live broadcast. Sales on the day reached 10.7 million, with an increase of 300,000 fans in the first show; of which Shanghai Sulfur Soap sold 100,000 yuan, Dabai 30,000 rabbit milk candies were sold, and nearly 5,000 bottles of Liushen toilet water were sold.
The model of celebrities + goods + emotions is hard not to remind people of TVB, which also launched live broadcasts on Taobao.
TVB, which launched its first live broadcast on Taobao in March this year, has always emphasized Hong Kong drama-style live broadcasts. So far, it has carried out a series of Hong Kong drama-themed TV series such as "Heartstorm", "Up to the Sky", "Multifunctional Wife" and "Forensic Pioneer". Hong Kong Exclusive. The live broadcast room is also full of Hong Kong flavor, from the anchor to the Cantonese delivery and the goods.
For example, in the live broadcast with the theme of "Up to the Sky", actors Ma Guoming, Chen Minzhi and Chen Ziyao from the show were invited to serve as anchors. The background of the live broadcast room restored the cabin shooting scene in the show. Chen Minzhi and Yoyo first introduced the product in Cantonese, and then used Mandarin is supplemented; the products include some Hong Kong-style milk tea, Jenny Bear cookies and other products with Hong Kong characteristics.
As TVB's live broadcast on Taobao becomes more and more comfortable, its performance is also rising.
On June 1, TVB's official public account announced that the ninth live broadcast of "TVB Knows Goods" held on Taobao on May 31, the total sales exceeded 100 million yuan, and the cumulative number of viewers was nearly 10 million, setting a record for TVB on Taobao. A new record since the live broadcast.
It is understood that the live broadcast of "TVB Knows Goods" on the evening of May 31 was themed "Miss Hong Kong" and invited Li Nuoyi, Chen Ziyao, Tang Luowen, Gao Haining, Zhu Chenli and He Yiting to participate in the e-commerce live broadcast, which lasted for 9 hours. .
Immediately afterwards, TVB's stock price also rose again. When the market opened on June 2, TVB's stock price once soared 50.31%, and was quoted at
Coincidentally, another Hong Kong TV station, Asia Television, also recently announced that it will enter the e-commerce live broadcast business on June 6, 2023. The official said that it will use its own brand influence and celebrity resources to cooperate with major platforms such as Douyin. This move seems to the outside world to be imitating TVB live broadcast.
Although Asia Television’s official account on Douyin has not yet officially started broadcasting, it does not affect its popularity with capital. Affected by this news, on June 7, Asia Television Holdings opened sharply higher by nearly 14%, reporting at HK$0.082, with a total market value of HK$900 million.
Content transformation of Taobao Live
Whether it is TVB's Hong Kong drama-style live broadcast or Dragon TV's Shanghai-style live broadcast, behind the frequent use of sentimental cards is Taobao's urgent transformation of live broadcasts into content-based ones.
Since Wei Ya and Xue Li left the show one after another, and Li Jiaqi stopped broadcasting, Taobao Live, which was already lacking in traffic, has suffered a lot of damage.
According to Cass Data, based on the experience of other platforms, if top anchors like Wei Ya and Li Jiaqi stop broadcasting, the traffic generated by these top anchors is expected to be dispersed to other live broadcast rooms, thus presenting a scene of "a hundred schools of thought contending". However, the reality is not like this. In the days without Wei Ya and Li Jiaqi, their fans did not enter other live broadcast rooms on Diantao (including celebrity live broadcast rooms), but were diverted to off-site platforms.
Taobao is not sitting still. In order to solve the traffic problem, in September last year, at the Taobao Live Ceremony, Taobao Live announced that it had entered a "new content era." Cheng Daofang, general manager of Taobao's live broadcast business group, explained, "Many people used to have the impression of e-commerce live broadcasts as 'hawking'. We have clearly defined the new value proposition of Taobao's content, which is 'professional and interesting people will guide you to buy'."
The logic behind Taobao Live's content transformation is that "Taobao Live is essentially an e-commerce company. The logic of e-commerce is not to generate traffic but to consume it. Once it is consumed, there must be a source of traffic." For the platform, good content can provide A steady stream of traffic is evident from the rapid rise of Douyin e-commerce, which relies on the huge traffic pool of short videos.
Under this decision, Taobao e-commerce made adjustments on the platform side. One is to change the platform traffic allocation mechanism from "transaction" to "transaction + content" dual indicators, clarifying a new path from "content planting to transaction explosion". Live broadcast rooms with good content and high conversion rates will receive more public traffic.
The other is to realize the connection of all fields to the public domain, and officially connect live broadcast with first guess, shopping, search, good goods, and order shopping. This will not only expand the traffic of the platform, but also help merchants and brands reach more consumers.
Taobao Live’s efforts in content are also reflected in the competition for anchors with personal characteristics from other platforms.
A representative example is that last year's Double 11, Luo Yonghao and Yu Minhong led the team to Taobao, and "Make a Friend" and "Oriental Selection" both completed their live broadcast debuts on Douyin and gradually became the live broadcast benchmark on the Douyin platform. In addition, Douyin anchors Yili Xiaoshazi, Cheng Shian, Nian Gao Mama, etc. also chose to participate in Taobao live broadcast.
Not only that, this year, Taobao has launched fancy live broadcasts. In addition to introducing TVB's "Hong Kong drama-style live broadcast" and Dragon TV's "Shanghai-style live broadcast", there are also weird sayings such as "open bar live broadcast" and hip-hop "battle style delivery". ”, The Voice of China’s “concert style delivery”, etc.

- CORE matchmaker Sad Badd was shown watching the Wall Of Death motorcycle show when she was confronted by Kerry Morton. Morton wanted to know what he had to do to get booked without his daddy around. He was shouting now, perhaps to be heard over the motorcycle engines or perhaps out of growing agitation, about CORE creating an entire division for old timers like his father yet the top young talent on the independent circuit can’t get bookings. Kerry claimed to be in the prime of his career yet he can’t get on a card without his washed up father. Sad Badd, who at this point had been pressed against the railing dangerously close to falling into the Wall Of Death, said the anniversary show is already booked, but she’ll see what she can do in November.

Ari told his part-time butler that he didn’t have to lay a finger on the Cardonas, all he had to do was let Slim J tag out. VSK took the money and Slim J made the hot tag to Parker Boudreaux. The Trustbusters gained the advantage and eventually won with a Boudreaux choke slam on Mike Knox followed by a big splash from Daivari. Winners: The Trustbusters
Match #4

Mr. Yatim told Sad Badd that he’s been so impressed by her matchmaking that he’s decided to invest in taking things to the next level by hiring her an assistant. A dazed KENTo fell forward and Josh Alexander locked in a sharpshooter of his own. KENTo fought for the ropes but ultimately tapped out. Winners: The Last Wave
Tumblr media
- In the week following the card, the CORE booking office received a mysterious letter. Sleeping dogs definitive edition review
Tumblr media
SLEEPING DOGS DEFINITIVE EDITION REVIEW HOW TO
While the character animations are a little stiff, the virtual Hong Kong looks fantastic, be it the neon-lit streets (reflecting off wet pavement), bustling markets in Kowloon or jumping between rooftops, across docks, or tearing down busy roads while in pursuit of someone. Again, take heed to the game's "Mature" warning, but these imaginative and cinematic finishing moves will make you wince and laugh at the same time. You can also use the environment to inflict major harm (such as smashing baddie through a payphone).
SLEEPING DOGS DEFINITIVE EDITION REVIEW HOW TO
Early on in the game you'll learn how to punch and kick, perform chained combo moves, block and counterattack, and even grab a baddie by the lapel to toss him in to others. The martial arts fighting is the best part, even when taking on more than ten enemies at one time - Bruce Lee-style. Show moreįor mature players who like gritty action games, Sleeping Dogs it's a blast. Played from a third-person perspective, you'll experience many dozens of intense shoot-outs, escort missions, and engage in dramatic car and foot chases –- but there's a lot more hand-to-hand combat in Sleeping Dogs, as you might expect from a Hong Kong cinema-inspired action game. Similar to games like Grand Theft Auto, this is an "open-world" game that lets you venture anywhere you like, take on side missions for people, and use money collected to customize the look of your character. but returns to Hong Kong to work with the authorities, in part to avenge his sister's murder. Without giving much away, you learn Shen spent some time in the U.S. At the start of the gritty game, the tattooed hero starts performing odd jobs for seedy types to win their trust, but as you dive deeper into the underworld you'll take on tougher tasks –- some which challenge your resolve and question your motives. Influenced by Asian action flicks, SLEEPING DOGS introduces you to Wei Shen, an undercover cop who infiltrates one of the world's most infamous criminal organizations: the Hong Kong Triads. I might understand a 16-year-old maybe being ok, but not younger kids. The tenor of the game is just too much for kids. Side missions encourage more shooting, running over people with your car, stealing cars, hacking cameras around the city, and general lawlessness. If I recall correctly, the language (while a wonderfully immersive mix of Cantonese and English) is peppered with swear words. You also take a few women on dates, and while the sex is implied rather than shown, it's there. The main missions involve much punching, kicking, shooting and death, and one mission thread involves freeing women being sold into sex slavery. Spoilers: The main character is an undercover cop, trying to bring down organized crime in Hong Kong. But I wouldn't let my tweens even watch me play this, much less play it themselves. So if you're an adult - get it and enjoy it. It's like a Grand Theft Auto set in Hong Kong and mostly with fists instead of guns (still guns, but less frequent).

“I believe that everyone here has something that they’re set out to do. I pretty much think I knew what I was supposed to do before I even got here. I saw how my life was gonna go and how it was gonna end. It all just comes back to accomplishing what you were sent here to do. To tell you the truth, most of the time I just feel like I’m from another world. I felt like I never really belonged here from the beginning of my life. I’m just always been the one out of place. Every single place I’ve gone to in my life - I’ve always been the odd one out.”

I really liked this adoption menu for zuko ♡ it is a very creative idea. I want to know the 27 because its my favourite number.
This one is actually pretty cute. You have placed an order for Zuko adoption number 27. Zuko gets adopted by Hope’s parents and gets a lesbian aunt.
The cracking of the cook fire certainly didn't do anything to help with the heat, but you couldn't go and feed a pregnant woman raw meat. Ying knew this. Than knew this. And Wei Su knew this.
Thud.
A half-starved teen fell off his ostrich horse and rolled down the hill into the camp unconscious.
Wei Su, her brother, and her sister-in-law all blinked at the teen in shock and confusion for a few moments, before Than rushed over and checked the teen's pulse.
“He's alive, just unconscious and...” He felt the teen's forehead, “A bit warm. Wei Su, can you go get some water for him, while I see if we have any smelling salts?”
“Sure thing,” And with that, she grabbed one of their water skins.
The guy seemed groggy when Than got him to wake up, but he probably had heatstroke, so getting him cooled off and some water would help with that.
“What brings you this way, son?” Than asked the teen.
The teen did not answer, instead choosing to accepting the water skin and taking a sip.
“Than, the boy just wake up surrounded by strangers,” Ying chastised, before gesturing for Wei Su to come to help her up.
Once on her feet, Ying walked over to the teen and sat down across from him.
The teen regarded her with confusion and suspicion.
“My name is Ying. Than is my husband, and she,” Ying said gesturing to Wei Su, “Is his sister, Wei Su.”
The teen studied Ying for a few moments before he relaxed and rasped, “Lee.”
Lee made to get up, but Ying stopped him with a stern look, saying, “Oh, you're not going anywhere, young man. You are in no condition to be traveling alone, right now.”
“I can do whatever I want,” Lee answered, getting up anyways, before stumbling and swaying. Than shot up and steadied the boy, but Lee slapped his hand away.
The fire went from crackling to roaring, and Wei Su saw the way the Lee winced.
“I should be going,” Lee told them after he took a deep breath, but Ying was having none of that.
Nope, she got back to her feet and planted her hands on her hips, before ordering, “Lee, sit down. At the very least I want to make sure you eat some food before you go riding off to your death.”
Lee, for all of his prickles, obeyed.
Wei Su was pretty sure Ying just adopted the boy.
And sure enough, when Lee attempted to leave yet again after dinner, Ying insisted that it would be better if he stayed at their camp for the night. She needed to make sure he ate something in the morning and she would worry about him if she didn't at least know he had eaten breakfast.
And well Lee couldn't bring himself to worry a pregnant woman, so with even less resistance he relented and offered to take the first watch.
Than laughed, clapping him on the back, “This far into Earth Kingdom lands we don't get a lot of Fire Nation soldiers. I wouldn't be worried about that, son.”
Lee looked uncomfortable, but he said nothing, as he laid out his bed roll.
The next morning, Ying had him help her make breakfast, claiming she wanted to make sure he knew how to feed himself. Not more than 15 minutes later, Ying was horrified and turned it into a real cooking lesson.
Lee did not have the faintest idea on how cooking worked beyond the fact that fire was involved.
“You are staying with us until you know how to make yourself a proper meal, Lee,” Ying stated, and Wei Su knew she was right. Ying did adopt him.
Halfway to Ba Sing Se, they learned that he didn't have a passport, so they had to take a quick detour to get him one.
“Yes, sir, my son's passport was destroyed, when we were attacked by fire benders,” Ying informed the soldier manning the passport office. “If you could reissue him one, we would be grateful.”
The soldier glanced at her pregnant belly and then sighed, “Alright, fill out this form and I'll get a new one written up for him, ma'am.”
“Lee, could you go with Wei Su to the market and get a bag of feed for Mushi?”
“Uh, yes... Mom,” Was Lee's hesitant answer.
It sounded like he hadn't called someone mother in many years, and Wei Su felt her heartbreak.
Lee was handing over money for the feed, when a kid chucked an egg at the nearby soldiers.
“Hey!” The hit soldier growled, marching over to Lee. “You throwing eggs at us, stranger?”
Lee didn't even look at the man, as he accepted the bag of feed, answering, “No.”
“You see who did throw it?”
Lee turned around slowly, his hand moving to the hilt of his swords, and answered, “No.”
The soldier looked over to Wei Su and asked, “What about you pretty lady? You see anything?”
“I didn't. Now leave us alone,” She answered, feeling her skin crawl with the leer the man gave her.
The soldier reached for her, but before she could make a move to react and slap his hand away, the tip of a sword rested against the man's throat.
Lee glared at the man with loathing, and spat, “Hands to yourself, or you lose them.”
The soldier put his hands up and backed away, grumbling, “Your girlfriend ain't even all that pretty.”
“You filthy peas-” Lee began, but Wei Su stopped him, shooting back, “Lee, let's go.”
And with that, they walked away from the soldiers.
The kid who'd thrown the egg, rushed over to them, babbling, “Thanks for not ratting me out.”
“You shouldn't be throwing eggs at soldiers, kid,” Wei Su told him, not wanting to know what those jerks would have done to the kid if he decided to do a repeat of earlier.
The kid grimaced and answered, “I only did it because they are bullies.”
“Is that so...” Lee asked, voice going low and thoughtful.
Wei Su did not want to know what her nephew was planning.
They stayed the night with the kid's family, and the next day headed out for the road to Ba Sing Se again, and on the way out, she got a good idea of just what Lee had done.
The soldier's barracks were a pile of smoldering rubble.
“Lee, what did you do?” Ying asked in horror, looking at her son from her spot on the ostrich horse, Mushi.
Lee answered, plainly, “They were bullies.”
“Lee, they will take it out on the villagers!” Wei Su shouted.
“No, they won't,” Lee refuted. “I made sure they saw me. Their commander put them on active duty.”
“THEY SAW YOU FIRE BEND!!” Ying chastised, “Lee, they will hunt you down and kill you!”
Lee looked surprised for a moment, but he shrugged, and answered, “They won't look for me in Ba Sing Se.”
He looked a little nervous now though. Nervous and confused.
“Wait... Lee's a fire bender?” Than asked, confused, “I thought he was gay?”
“What?” Lee asked even more confused.
“Well, Wei Su is gay and the two of you hang out a lot?”
Lee glanced between her and her brother, and finally answered, “Oh, I didn't know that... I mean I might be? But I am a fire bender.”
“So? Who's the guy that caught your eye then, Mr. I Might Be Gay?” Wei Su asked, breaking the tension by teasing her nephew playfully.
Lee flushed bright red, sputtering, “I-I What? There isn't a guy!”
Ying gave Lee her mom eyebrow, that she'd been practicing ever since she'd adopted a feral teenage fire bender.
“Well, there is a guy but he probably hates me...” Lee admitted, caving under the look Ying gave him.
Ying sighed, “Lee. What did you do?”
“Attacked his village?”
“YOU DID WHAT?”

AU where Xiao Xingchen is the one to find Wei Wuxian after his parents’ deaths
--
It’s raining in Yiling when Xiao Xingchen arrives, his hair sticking to the sides of his face and mud splattering onto his boots as he starts walking again. He’d spent the last three months chasing rumors, hoping against hope that they were wrong, that his sister and her husband were alive and well and their son was tucked away warm and safe inside during this weather.
What right did he have to listen to any of those tavern rumors anyway? It would take more than a single spirit or monster to take down Cangse Sanren, she’d been their grandmaster’s pride and joy before she’d left. But what if it had been more than one? What if she and Wei Changze had been outnumbered?
Lightning cracks overhead and it shakes Xiao Xingchen out of those thoughts, his grip on Shuanghua loosening as he forces himself to breathe. No. He wouldn’t let those thoughts stop him from finding Wei Ying, if those rumors were true, he needed him, if they weren’t, he’d just be a visiting uncle.
He makes his way in and out of taverns and inns, trying to describe Wei Ying from memory and feeling the hole in his stomach get bigger with every shake of a head and doubtful sidelong glance.
“There’s a hundred orphans on these streets, Young Master, take your pick of them.” One innkeeper had told him, and despair had turned into anger, he’d been an orphan once too.
He was out of buildings to go into and search through, but he had less information now than when he started, and the feeling tears through his chest and up his throat.
“Wei Ying!” He calls, walking up and down the streets, uncaring of how he looks until the storm chokes out his voice and Xiao Xingchen realizes how dark it’s gotten. It would only get colder now, he had to find him. “Wei Ying!”
A sniffle stops Xiao Xingchen’s heart, his eyes widening as he turns to try and find the source of it. It’s gotten so dark he almost misses the flash of dark hair and brown robes hidden under a market table.
Xiao Xingchen’s body moves on its own, he couldn’t even remember wandering into the market area, but now he kneels down in front of the table, uncaring how filthy his robes get as his throat tightens with hope and fear all at the same time.
“Wei Ying?” Xiao Xingchen asks, squinting in the darkness and holding onto the legs of the table so tightly his knuckles turn white.
The child underneath the table freezes and pulls his hands away from his face slowly, his eyes big, and wet, and scared as he turns them onto Xiao Xingchen, but Xiao Xingchen only feels relief as his hands slip off the table. “Wei Ying, do you remember who I am?”
“Uncle Xiao?” Wei Ying asks in a small, terrified voice that makes Xiao Xingchen reach for the boy before he can think about what he’s doing.
“Yes.” Xiao Xingchen answers, putting his hands on his nephew’s face to wipe at tears, or rain water, rather than picking him up like his instincts are screaming at him to do. Wei Ying’s face is dirty and his robes are worn, it’s all the confirmation that Xiao Xingchen needs. “Wei Ying, do you want to come with me?”
Xiao Xingchen asks, just like he’d been asked by Baoshan Sanren all those years ago, his face patient as he drops his hands down to Wei Ying’s shoulders. He was warm, warmer than he should’ve been, and Xiao Xingchen is grateful that his sister had taught her son how to cultivate this much already.
Wei Ying looks down at the ground for a moment, his arms wrapped around his knees, but Xiao Xingchen doesn’t rush him, he’d wait out in the rain all night if that’s what it took for Wei Ying to answer him. Slowly, Wei Ying nods and Xiao Xingchen feels like he could collapse with relief.
Instead, he’s reaching underneath the table again and pulling Wei Ying against his chest and holding him tightly before he rises to his feet. He hadn’t noticed when the thunder and lightning had stopped, or when the rain had calmed, but it makes finding his way back to an inn for the night easier.
Xiao Xingchen doesn’t hear the innkeeper’s chatter as they’re led up to their room, pressing his cheek against the top of Wei Ying’s head and pretending to nod when it feels appropriate. What would’ve happened if he hadn’t heard about Cangse and her husband when he did? Where would Wei Ying have gone? Xiao Xingchen doesn’t want to think about that.
Tightening his hold on Wei Ying, Xiao Xingchen finally turns his attention to the innkeeper. “Could you send up a meal and the supplies for a bath?” He could feel Wei Ying’s ribs rubbing against his fingers through his skin every time the boy shifted in his arms, how long had it been since he’d had a full meal?
Probably the night Cangse and Wei Changze had gone hunting, Xiao Xingchen realizes that now.
The innkeeper nods and smiles as she turns to leave, her hands clasped in front of her when she reaches the door and then stops. “You know, my husband was the same way with our first son, I thought he would never put him down, but I suppose it’s easier when your child clings to you the way yours does.”
Xiao Xingchen puts a gentle smile on his face as he nods at the woman, he doesn’t bother to correct her as she leaves, he simply settles onto one of the cushions on the floor with Wei Ying in his lap. He hadn’t even realized that Wei Ying had been holding onto him as tightly as he could manage until he’s tugging those little arms away from his neck.
In the candle light of the inn, Xiao Xingchen gets a better look at his nephew’s face, running his thumb over a plump cheek. There were scrapes and bruises, he’d figured there might be, but what makes him stop is when he sees Wei Ying’s arms. There were teeth marks embedded into his skin, not human, Xiao Xingchen can tell that much easily, but he only finds more of them as he pulls Wei Ying’s trousers up to his knees.
“The dogs did it.” Wei Ying tells him when Xiao Xingchen asks, looking around the room as though he thought one would come out from behind the partition separating the rest of the room from the beds.
Had it really been that long since Xiao Xingchen had had to worry about fighting dogs over food? He could remember those days, but they weren’t clear, after he’d been taken up by mountain by his grandmaster, his life before had turned into a blur of hunger and insecurity.
“They won’t hurt you anymore.” Xiao Xingchen promises, rubbing his thumb over the scars. Wei Ying was too young, he shouldn’t have scars like these, at four years old, he shouldn’t have any scars at all.
Before he can say anything else on the matter, there’s a knock at the door, and the innkeeper reappears, a tray of food held in her hands and a younger man behind her carrying a tub and a bucket of water. Xiao Xingchen wonders if this is the same son the woman’s husband refused to put down, but then he feels Wei Ying perk up at the sight of the food and then look back at him curiously.
Xiao Xingchen only smiles down at his nephew as he puts his hand on top of his head.
“Will this be all that the Young Masters need?” The innkeeper asks and Xiao Xingchen nods his head, bowing as well as he can with Wei Ying in his lap. He can feel Wei Ying trying to mimic the gesture and that only makes his smile a little bit more genuine.
“Thank you!” Wei Ying calls when the woman turns to leave, and Xiao Xingchen thinks he sees a chuckle in the woman’s shoulders before the door closes behind her again.
They decide to eat dinner first, and Xiao Xingchen piles Wei Ying’s bowl high with both vegetables and meat before he hands it to him, an arrow hitting his chest when Wei Ying looks at him with wide eyes and asks, “But what about you?”
“A-Ying needs to eat well now so he grows up big and strong.” Xiao Xingchen says, filling his own bowl now, the innkeeper had been generous to them. “There’s enough here for me too.” Wei Ying looks up at him hesitantly again, but Xiao Xingchen waits him out, smiling again when Wei Ying picks up his chopsticks and begins to eat.
It’s only when they’re finished eating and Wei Ying is looking sleepy that Xiao Xingchen gets up to start preparing the bath, he’d just dumped the water into the tub and was getting ready to warm it with a spell when Wei Ying speaks up, any drowsiness already gone from his face as he stands up.
“I can do that! Baba taught me how!” He sounds proud, but Xiao Xingchen hesitates. He’d helped his grandmaster train the other children she took in, the spells that they could cast at Wei Ying’s age usually resulted in fire and scorched clothing.
“A-Ying, wait for just a-” When he looks up, Wei Ying is already drawing the talisman in the air and shooting it towards the tub, the red glow of it hitting the tub and Xiao Xingchen draws back instinctively.
When he opens his eyes, there’s no fire, nor is there the smell of smoke. What there is, instead, is a bathtub of steaming water and Wei Ying smiling up at him, and Xiao Xingchen can breathe again.
“How is my nephew already such a good cultivator?” He couldn’t say what he’d been doing at Wei Ying’s age, but he knew it wasn’t using talismans. Xiao Xingchen folds Wei Ying’s clothes carefully as he picks them up from the pile they’d been left in. He would have to get new robes for Wei Ying before they left Yiling, possibly a few sets of them, not knowing how long he’d been wearing these.
He can hear the splashing stop behind the partition, he hadn’t been sure how much Wei Ying would’ve wanted him to do, but when he’d asked, Wei Ying had said that he could wash himself just fine, so Xiao Xingchen had left him to it.
“Mama and Baba used to teach me, they said it was important for a rogue cultivator to know.” There’s a note of sadness in Wei Ying’s voice as he talks, but then the splashing starts again.
“Are you going to be a rogue cultivator when you grow up?” Xiao Xingchen asks, sitting down on his side of the partition, trying to decide if he needed to come around to the other side.
“Like Mama and Uncle!” Wei Ying calls out, seeming to bounce back up just as quickly as he’d gone down, it makes Xiao Xingchen smile sadly. Cangse had been the same way.
Later, after they’d both washed up, Xiao Xingchen had started tucking Wei Ying into bed. The first time he’d run into his sister and her family was when he had just come down from the mountain and Wei Ying was two, watching him with wide eyes from the safety of his father’s arms while Cangse had hugged him too tightly. He’d been a stranger that Wei Ying had only reluctantly allowed to hold him then.
Xiao Xingchen had traveled with his sister’s family for three months after that while he adjusted to life away from the mountain before splitting off on his own when he felt ready. He’d only been tempted to stay when Wei Ying held onto him and wailed when he’d tried to go.
“Uncle Xiao? Can you tell me a story?” Wei Ying asks, already half curled into a ball as Xiao Xingchen comes to kneel in front of his bed.
“What kind of story? Uncle isn’t very good at telling stories, A-Ying.” Xiao Xingchen only says it because it’s true, he forgot important details like the names and morals of the stories. Cangse had been better, but she’d been distractible.
“A story about Mama?” Wei Ying asks hopefully, shuffling to the edge of the bed. “Please?” A story about Cangse? Xiao Xingchen could do that. He had stories from their childhood that might make his sister’s spirit haunt him for sharing them with her son, but he had kinder stories too.
“Aright, A-Ying, I’ll tell you stories about your mother, but you have to go to sleep.”
Wei Ying nods and promises that he’ll sleep, and Xiao Xingchen starts, recalling more details as he goes on, even after Wei Ying falls asleep in the middle of the second one. Smiling, Xiao Xingchen pulls the quilt up to Wei Ying’s shoulders and blows out the rest of the candles.

Chapter 27
of the wwx emperor au I’m thinking of calling Lan QiRen’s Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Week oh god it’s only gonna get worse
Prologue | Chapter 1 | Chapter 2 | Chapter 3 | Chapter 4 | Chapter 5 | Chapter 6 | Chapter 7 | Chapter 8 Part 1 | Chapter 8 Part 2 | Chapter 9 | Chapter 10 | Chapter 11 | Chapter 12 | Chapter 13 | Chapter 14 | Chapter 15 Part 1 | Chapter 15 Part 2 | Chapter 16 | Chapter 17 | Chapter 18 | Chapter 19 | Chapter 20 | Chapter 21 | Chapter 22 Part 1 | Chapter 22 Part 2 | Chapter 23 | Chapter 24 | Chapter 25 | Chapter 26
WangJi is not familiar with YiLing.
His first sight of the town had been marred by the stress of the six day travel, and all the unpleasantness that the trip had encompassed.  Their inability to find any accommodations for the Lan Sect escort had also contributed to the unfavorable impression. Overall, YiLing is not much smaller than Gusu, but significantly older, its streets and canals having sprouted wherever they were needed.
There is symmetry and regularity to Gusu that has always appealed to WangJi’s need for clearly discernible orderliness; it had been designed with care, roads proportionally wide to the demand, the street market restricted to specific areas built to accommodate the resulting foot traffic.
In contrast, YiLing had formed itself around a popular trade route both by land and by water, and had grown as the fame of the Immortal Mountain had grown, without any order or forethought. Some alleys are wider than the main roads, some are cobblestones and the others dirt, and in some, stubborn weeds and vines have taken root, choking the nearby walls and hedges. Some canals have so many bridges, that one could cross half of YiLing just hopping across them; some only have single, narrow bridge, and those are perpetually clogged by carts and carriages. Handsome mansions sit next to houses of ill repute, next to tanneries and farriers, the stench mixing heavily in the day’s heat. The street markets have taken root wherever there is space, and in many places where they clearly should not have, their stands and awnings blocking the thoroughfare. The result is haphazard at best, an overwhelming chaos made worse by the seven-day festival in honor of the Emperor’s birthday.
Wei WuXian loves it.
WangJi can hardly keep up with him. It is a relief to know that Nie MingJue has stationed multiple members of the Nie Sect throughout the town, because Wei WuXian seems to have entirely forgotten to worry about his own safety. Everything is fascinating to him; everything is new, and exciting, and worthy of exclaiming over. Not a single piece of cloth, or an ornament, or a children’s toy has been overlooked. Wei WuXian has to touch everything, ask about everything, haggle over everything. His smile is so wide and bright that WangJi is finding it hard to focus on anything else. Multiple times, he has found Wei WuXian’s hand wrapped around his wrist, tugging on his sleeve, pressing on his shoulder. He is like a child who needs to see everything, but also needs WangJi to see it as well, even if Wangji hardly has time to offer an opinion, before being tugged to the next stand, the next alley, the next bridge.
Wei WuXian has dressed to blend in. His robes are dark gray, lined in red, sleeves tightly tied off at the wrists. It is a uniform more suited to a rogue cultivator, or perhaps a second or third young master of a middling clan. But WangJi is certain that no set of dark, unadorned robes would ever prevent Wei WuXian from standing out. His smile is infectious; people smile back without meaning to, as if compelled by some invisible force. Those that do not, are still left looking dazed, blinking into the space where his smile had been moments ago. The red ribbon in Wei WuXian’s hair is perhaps the most conspicuous part of his outfit, fluttering as he darts from one corner of the street to another, a bright splash of color WangJi can easily follow even when left behind.
“Did you know you look an awful lot like the Emperor?” an old lady says to him, and Wei WuXian laughs loudly, turning to WangJi.
“Did you hear that Lan Zhan? What do you think? Am I as handsome as the Emperor?”
WangJi feels his face heat, but Wei WuXian is already skipping away, exclaiming over a row of grass butterflies. He buys three of them for A-Yuan, then dashes to the next colorful thing, a row of bright scarves embroidered with lotus flowers.
They have long lost sight of Nie MingJue and XiChen; WangJi knows they had not intended to stick closely to one another throughout the evening, as the sight of two Lan Sect members together may raise suspicion. They do not know if the assassin or their accomplices have eyes and ears in YiLing; the rumors in the Immortal Mountain City have placed the Young Masters of the Lan Sect in the Imperial Gardens, along with the Emperor, and Jiang WanYin had been quite insistent that they do nothing to compromise the plans set in motion. Both WangJi and XiChen had dressed simply enough to be mistaken for the Lan Sect escort still residing outside the YiLing proper, but once they are standing side by side, their resemblance is difficult to ignore. Still, WangJi knows his brother will worry, and wishes he could at least catch a glimpse of him in the crowded streets.
“Lan Zhan! Lan Zhan! Look at this!”
Wei WuXian had stumbled upon rows of paper lanterns, each one delicately painted with a different woodland creature in careful strokes. These are, by no means, the first paper lanterns they have seen on their trek across the market. Later in the evening, when the darkness fully sets, thousands of them will be released to the sky, as is tradition on every fifth day of the Emperor’s birthday festival. But these are the first lanterns WangJi has not found visually overwhelming, and he watches Wei WuXian haggle with the merchant for a little while, before simply stuffing the amount the man had wanted into his hands.
“Lan Zhan! He was going to sell it for less!”
The man shoots Wei WuXian a look that clearly says he was not going to do any such thing, but WangJi does not care either way.
“Which one?” he asks, and that is all it takes for Wei WuXian to become distracted again, exclaiming over hedgehogs and deer, until he settles on a lantern depicting a white rabbit.
“Do you like rabbits, Lan Zhan?”
WangJi nods. He has never before considered his feelings about rabbits in any detail, but now, he finds himself quite fond of them.
“Hm, I think we should eat. What do you think? After, we can find a peaceful spot to watch the lantern festival.”
Anything with a word peaceful in it is more than satisfactory to WangJi, and he nods again, letting Wei WuXian pull him to the nearest winehouse.
The common room is crowded and loud, the stench of alcohol mixing with the sharp scent of spices. Majority of the patrons seem to be merchants, but WangJi sees a few cultivator swords leaning against the table edges, despite the fact that their owners lack discernible sect uniforms. YiLing has always been a popular town for rogue cultivators. The Immortal Empress herself had belonged to no sect or clan, and each year, even the largest Sects see a number of disciples leave to strike out on their own, the idea of being anchorless and sectless doubtlessly more romantic in theory than it turns out being in truth. Still, WangJi is more focused on ascertaining if any of them are Sect members in disguise, than he is on Wei WuXian’s conversation with the serving girl.
Once the proprietor approaches however, he finally recognizes that there is an issue.
A single glance at the man’s face explains the situation fully, and WangJi steps closer to Wei WuXian, who is still visibly confused.
“We should leave,” WangJi says softly.
Wei WuXian does not listen. The common room is crowded, but there are clearly at least two unoccupied tables, and Wei WuXian does not understand why the serving girl would pretend otherwise.
The proprietor, unlike the serving girl, has no qualms about speaking plainly, “The Lan sect is not welcome here.”
WangJi had remained a few steps behind Wei WuXian, and cannot see the expression on his face, but he can perceive the telltale stiffening of his shoulders, the tightening of his grip on the sword. WangJi feels a moment of pity for XiChen, having to deal with his own eerily similar reaction in MoLing.
“Excuse me?” Wei WuXian says, his voice cold.
The exchange has drawn notice of the few nearby tables, most of them occupied by men who clearly know how to use their swords, and WangJi can see this situation escalating past the point where it can be managed peacefully.
He grabs Wei WuXian by the elbow and pulls him backwards, stepping in front of him.
“Forgive my friend,” he says, bowing to the proprietor, “he meant no offense. We are leaving.”
He has to physically push Wei WuXian outside. The line of his back is iron hard under WangJi’s hand, and his grip on the sword has not loosened.
“How dare he?” he bursts out, before they are even fully in the street, and WangJi pushes him harder, hoping to put some distance between them and the common room as quickly as possible.
“Do not be angry,” he says softly.
“Do not be angry?” Wei WuXian spits out, fury making his voice vibrate, “By the time I am done, he will be lucky to run a QiShan whorehouse!”
WangJi steers him down an empty alley, afraid that someone might decide to follow, “We are in disguise. The proprietor mistook you for a rogue cultivator. He did not know that he was insulting the Emperor.”
“He knew he was insulting you!” Wei WuXian whirls to face him, his expression outraged.
This is the second time WangJi has seen him angry in response to the mistreatment of the Lan Sect. It is just as overwhelming as the last time, and he is equally as incapable of formulating the correct response.
“This is YiLing,” he says, “the home of the Empress. The Lan Sect has never been welcome here.”
“Are you saying that they are all like this?” Wei WuXian’s voice is dangerous now, and WangJi does not know how to answer that question in a way that will deescalate the situation.
He should have known that this would happen. He should have steered Wei WuXian away from the places that he knows are likely to refuse to serve him.
It was stupid and thoughtless of him to forget. The evening had been going so well. Wei WuXian had been genuinely happy, and now he is furious, and WangJi does not know how to fix what he had broken.
Feeling agitated and unsure, he reaches for Wei WuXian’s hand, “Do not be angry. The street merchants will not care what sect I am from. We can buy food from them.”
He watches Wei WuXian’s anger bleed away in a rush, but it is replaced by frustration and grief, both nearly as crushing as the anger had been.
His fingers press into the back of WangJi’s hand, “Is it like that everywhere?”
“Sometimes,” WangJi says, “but it does not matter right now. You wanted to eat. We should do so before the festival starts, and the streets become crowded. Come on.”
He tugs Wei WuXian slightly, desperate that the subject be dropped, desperate for the return of the happy, smiling Wei WuXian, who seemed to not have a care in the world.
Wei WuXian lets himself be led, but it is a long time before he smiles again.
