The Manfrotto Saga Conclusion

You ever go past being upset to the degree it becomes funny?

I finally got the courage to open the email.

And it's bad.

But I actually got a good laugh, so at least there is that.

This is what they sent me...

"Thanks for reaching out. We're sorry to hear that this happened.

Unfortunately, this can happen from time to time. The cost of parts and labor are not usually too bad, but when you add tax and shipping, it can become close to the point of it not being worth it.

We don't usually do this, but as a show of support, I'd like to offer you a 30% coupon code to aid in offsetting the cost of a replacement. The code is good on anything on the Manfrotto website, excluding sale items or close-outs. It will expire in 30 days and is not replaceable."

Yes, it was the tax and shipping that put me over the top. Not the actual repair cost being more than the item is currently selling for as new.

Now, you might be thinking that is the funny part.

The funny part is the 30% coupon.

You might also be thinking, "30% is a decent discount! SCORE!"

But you may have missed the "Manfrotto website" detail.

You see, manufacturer's website pricing is mostly used so the actual retailers can point to those prices and say, "Hey, look at this great sale!" even if that is the item's perpetual price.

So, let's look at this geared tripod head on their website. It's what I would upgrade to if I were to stick with their brand.

So with a 30% discount I am down to about $175. Plus those darn taxes and shipping.

Say, what is this going for on Amazon with free shipping?

So, basically what I've learned is... Manfrotto just sucks.

When I bought this originally, I was a photography noob. I didn't realize they were a bit like the Nickelback of photo gear. Very popular, but most experienced photographers try to avoid them if possible. Mainly because they use proprietary plates. If you need a ball head for landscapes and a fluid head for video and you want to easily switch between them, you need two heads from Manfrotto. They trap you in the ecosystem.

Whereas other brands mostly use "arca swiss" plates which are standardized. You can put one plate on the bottom of your camera and switch to any head from any brand that has that mount.

So I am going to save up for something with an arca swiss mount. Something that isn't fucking Manfrotto. Someone already donated about half of what I need (thank you so much) and I think I am going to sell a few things to cover the rest.

IN THE MEAN TIME... I spent all Friday night digging through my basement. I bought my tripod like 10 years ago and I knew it had some kind of head on it originally. And in the recesses of my stuff I found an old ball head.

And while I hate ball heads and think they are a pain in the ass, it will do everything I need at the moment.

Also, it doesn't wiggle.

My big upset about all of this was mostly how wasteful it is. They are going to trash something that can be fixed because they have purposely marked up the parts to force people to buy a new thing. It does not cost Manfrotto $127 to make the parts needed. I'd be surprised if it cost them $10 for those parts.

And it is my big fear that if we win the "Right to Repair" fight, all manufacturers are just going to mark up their parts like this.

But the repair company seems a little scummy as well. I emailed them before I sent in the head for repair. I showed them the video and they did a basic diagnosis.

"The lever may be loose, or the top housing may be damaged."

And they were right, the top housing was damaged.

But they didn't say, "Hey, parts for this are super expensive. It may cost over a hundred dollars to fix."

They didn't say, "We charge $30 to ship it back to you."

I suppose I should have asked, but never in my wildest imagination did I think this repair would cost that much. It was just a wiggle!

So, I'll just get something that suits my needs better. I was planning to do that eventually, but this just accelerated those plans.

- 12th placements and not being believed is so true. These people know the answers, they just can’t prove it. Always trust your intuition babies.

- Bro… so I was looking at air moons n was losing my mind. I collected a bunch of Aquarius moons celebs cause I was like let me see who of my people is famous 🫡 and it was so sad. They all had some sort of very traumatic, difficult past. I also noticed that people wouldn’t think these people have suffered to such extremes due to the image they put on. We have to remember Aquarius is know as caring of the collective, which despite Saturn’s influence, makes it a very hopeful sign. With Uranus they’re looking toward the future with hopes of finding something better.

- one thing I love about earth placements at their best, especially mercury, is how blunt they can be with what they feel. Again, I think this is the placements at their best. But there is a reason why they get called honest, the only thing missing is authenticity with their emotions which again comes with time.

- When it comes to a situation where someone needs to take charge… if there is a water sign, they will try to take the lead but could fail due to a lack of diligence or just not being taken serious. They could be soft spoken or their stance could be a bit inward or unsure. I know this is kind of a stereotype but I do think there is some truth to it in the sense that a lot of the time their emotions can be out for the public to see. So if there is a problem and they are worried or upset it will show. I don’t want to perpetuate this “omg water signs r babies 🥺” thing it’s so corny. How do you guys feel about this???? Obviously this depends on the rest of the chart WE KNOW 🙄.

- Libra moons could have a mother who was highly critical of their looks. Libra moons, especially the men I have encountered are very critical of looks as well. I know three people with this placement who have looked their so in their eyes and told them how ugly their outfit is. 😭😭😭 I don’t mean it to say y’all are bitches, you kind of remind me of how critical Hispanic aunts are.

- Libra in the 8th or Libra Venus could be an attention seeker for their SO or their crush. Libra Venus are very blunt on the fact that they like you if it is a crush. They are the type to flirt with people and not get let down if it’s not immediately reciprocated. Y’all are just charming like 😋 Libra in the 8th is very clingy with their SO in private. Not in a bad way, they’re mischievous and it’s endearing.

- I didn’t understand fire placements being seen as egotistical until I saw it this way. Fire signs are very independent which can sometimes evolve into feeling as though you don’t need anyone for the wrong reasons. The reasons being…thinking nobody knows better than you do 💀 after that I understood all the other points. sometimes it’s okay to sit and take in your environment ur still a bad bitch but it’s still good to listen to those who you trust even if you don’t follow through with their advice.

- the best dancers I have seen usually have Venus ruled or Saturn ruled placements. It could make sense due to Venus ruling over art forms. Saturn placements have amazing stamina which I don’t feel is talked about enough, it ruled over time after all.

- Earth signs: I am begging you to listen to RM I think you will find the comfort ur looking for honestly. As I said one of the lovely things I have found about the bluntness of an earth sign is their ability to be honest about how they feel no matter how bleak it may sound. His music is also just very grounded idk how else to explain it. ON ANOTHER NOTE…listen to double Capricorn poppy’s “i disagree”. I’m telling you you won’t regret it, she’s angry and she’s letting go and she’s letting karma do it’s thing. Rico Nasty lovely double Taurus that also makes music for angry, hot, earth signs. Also listen to Lous and the Yakuza, I love me a Virgo moon and will never deny it.

- Water signs: bjork right now. This woman has a scary ass chart (triple Scorpio) but her music is just as intense and surreal as these signs feel. It’s an experience truly. Also if you haven’t already check out Chloe x Halle they have such a good combo of cancer/Pisces placements that oof. ALSO listen to Moyko cause let me tell you I don’t have that whole chart but if that ain’t the most watery water sign music with a couple earth placements here and there. His music has me bawling but it’s comforting at the same time. Yeah, I agree, I really don't know what he was thinking when he said that "I don't wanna say names, BUT". Like every other thing, I can understand with all the other stuff (doesn't mean that I don't think he should be more mindful, he totally should!), but like no, you just don't say stuff like that, even if his intentions weren't to stirr up the pot, it still did it..

It's a wonder how the Kerkez stuff didn't get picked up by now, maybe it will when people will need furthet proof that he is pos. I don't know, to me, that was again really something that I would say (and do say) to my friends, so I really don't see anything wrong with that, but again, understandable why people would have that opinion.

I really hope they'll work out well together too. tbh i really want to see Wilnas/Michael/Shiva being a killer team together as they all were the guardian of the Fire elements at different level. It would be so fun if basically the Archangel worked as something to tie together the Dragon and the Disciple units for each element.

Cain's unit is sooo fun i'm so sad i couldn't get it this year, hoping into next year (or i'll annitix him maybe, i'll see my finances around that time lol)

Claudia’s entire relationship with Matt has been comfortable as of recent. So comfortable that she knows an uncomfortable conversation is bound to eventually come up and throw her off guard.

Matt is great at showing his feelings with his face, he just isn’t likely to open up unless she forces it out of him or he says the words in the heat of a moment.

And since she’s the type who likes to avoid emotional confrontation, she doesn’t coast stuff out of him. Most of the time, she lets him tell her what needs to be said in his own time. And if she’s not in pain somehow or irritated with the setting they’re in, she tends to take it easy. But if she’s upset, she’ll have something to say. 

When she meets him at his place, and he looks a little like he’s hiding something, she knows that that uncomfortable conversation is going to happen today. It leaves her shifting her weight to the left, and eventually leads her to take a step back.

Though he can’t see her face, she’s certain he can hear the pounding of her heartbeat, feel the heat off her skin turn into sweat he can probably taste, and hear her breathing go a little more shallow – which is wild, since she’s been trained from an early age to hide her feelings when she’s nervous. 

“What are you holding back?” she asks him quickly, before letting out a breath she didn’t realize she was holding. 

He picks up his glasses with his index finger, probably irritated from them slipping down his nose, and then he says, “I chose you and you left. I don’t want to waste time on whatever this is if you plan on leaving, again.” 

Her lips purse, and though he can’t see her, he feels like he’s paying attention to everything else. And again, she knows he is. Which is why, when she speaks next, she tries to steady her heartbeat, and calms down her breathing, before she shakes her head. 

“I’m not going anywhere. I promise. If I do leave, it’ll be for a few weeks. I can’t stop helping people around the country and world, just because I help you here sometimes,” she tells him as honestly as she can.  “If I don’t stop Arca, or whatever they’re calling themselves next, no one else will. They took my daughter from me. They killed my little brother. I can’t just…let them tear other people apart, too. Please, understand that.” Claudia swallows, and rests the back of a  gloved hand against Matt’s cheek. “But I am not leaving forever. I’m not as scared.”

They both stand there for a while, Matt’s body becoming less rigid as he eases his shoulders and tilts his head into the touch of her soft glove.  “I can’t lie and say I’m not.”

Claudia laughs a bit. “The Man Without Fear? Scared of anything,” she teases, using that same hand that comforts him to pinch his cheek and make him give her that infamous Matty smile. “You’re fucking with me.” 

He laughs, too. “Maybe? Maybe not.” 

“You’re full of shit.” She says in a way that says she doesn’t believe he actually is. Right before she pulls him by his tie to kiss her. It’s not a long, passionate kiss, but it is enough to prove she means what she says. Because, if she didn’t, he would have to deal with her walking away and leaving him with nothing. “But scout’s honor…which, I realize you can’t see... I just, uh mean, I don't fuck with thin mints and I swear on all that's holy, which, uhm, is thin mints." She gives him a pat on his arm after and then begins to walk, the tap of her heels, showing him she's on the move.

I wasn’t concerned with anything technical because I found it boring, and I never used a proper microphone because it was more convenient to just sing straight into my laptop. Obviously, I didn’t take myself too seriously but I also knew I hated being called experimental because it still felt disingenuous to what I was actually aiming for.Releasing "Thru My Chest" of course marks the beginning of a new era in my career, but it also feels like a nod back to some of my earliest releases in a lot of ways. While this was never the intention when creating this track with my collaborators Dave Burris and Christina Galligan, I think that ultimately proves the point I’ve been trying to make for years up until now… I’ve always been a pop-oriented artist. I’ve definitely gotten better at making that more obvious in my music over the years, but the pop sentiment has always been there for sure.You are a former screenwriting student. Do you envision ‘Thru My Chest’ being part of a larger story in the future, and does envisioning your music in this way help your creative process?I started writing songs around the same time I studied screenwriting in college, and I think that significantly impacted the way I tell stories in my music. I love building narratives in general, but with this song in particular– the narrative is pretty fairly self-contained. The song itself might not be my most intense or meaningful, but it’s still very honest to how I was feeling on the day we had the session. I remember really struggling to wrap my head around my own emotions, feeling really vulnerable, and trying to parse through them in real time as we were coming up with the lyrics. I think working with another writer definitely made it easier to detach myself from the context, and keep it concise while also prioritizing the song’s pop appeal.With that being said, this track does communicate really well with a few other songs I’ve made over the past several months, but that wasn’t intentional. It wasn’t until I looked back on the demos that came out of a lot of these sessions I had back to back last year that I realized there was a consistent through line at all. Usually when I come up with a concept for a project, I form a loose narrative early on in the process and try to create songs that fit within that overarching story. There’s a lot of value in that approach and I’ve learned so much about world building that way, but I didn’t do that with this song. I’ve been trying to just let stories form organically based on what I’m actively feeling inspired by in my life and let the larger story speak for itself.You’ve worked both solo and alongside a talented array of producers and fellow artists throughout your career. What has been the most rewarding and most challenging parts of going from making music independently to opening yourself up to the world of collaboration?Working with a team of people and considering other tastes, styles, opinions, and timelines can definitely have its challenging moments, but I love collaborating and it has always been a huge part of my life as a creative. Before music, I was heavily involved in pursuing both musical theater and a career in film production – both highly collaborative practices. The only real reason why I worked so independently for the first few years of my music career was because I didn’t have many other options when I first started out. I started learning more about production as a hobby while still in film school so I wasn’t really surrounding myself with people I could ask for help. I didn’t have any kind of musical network and it felt both extremely isolating and freeing since I only had my intuition and my own ears to rely on. At a certain point though during the pandemic, it was becoming harder to operate by myself on my little island because I was struggling to find new ways to grow and challenge myself. I was getting bored of operating within my limitations, so that’s when I got online and started building a community for myself and hitting up literally anyone. I was so bold about reaching out and DMing as many people as possible, and that process was extremely rewarding and changed my life. I’ve made some of my favorite songs with the help of people I’ve met online, and that gave me a lot of confidence to start collaborating in person… sometimes in really intimidating environments. I truly collaborate all the time at this point in my career and I’m a much better artist for it. Something seems to pop in Evan’s head, audible from the spark doing just that above his head making her laugh

“Sparky you’re gonna make me feel embarrassed” she snorts as he power walks up to her, stopping her tracks to hold her hands

“Neora, we’ve been working on this for nearly two decades- this could take months- years-“

“I’m aware”

“Guh- but- do you believe we’ll manage it sooner??”

“I mean I’d love that for all of you” she chuckles, laughing at his expression “But I’m realistic. Sparky, I know what I’m getting myself into. Or I don’t, but I’m committed to trying to help. And if that takes a few decades than so be it”

She giggles at him as the fuses continue to pop in his head, finally letting out a meek “Your dad is going to implode”

“Oh hush, don’t you start talking like Callon. My dad is my dad, and we trust each other. Your family trusted you off in Arcaelys too didn’t they?” She chuckles, bumping his shoulder

“Now come on. I don’t know this city, I need help here” she grins to everyone, gesturing to the street

Red grins, and offers her his arm to hold onto. "I think you're going to fit in with us very well."

Talk about Harley!

Oh for crying out loud, I don’t like Harley!*gasping sound effects*

Alright alright, I like the potential Harley has as a character. It’s the same way I’ve felt about a lot of characters in the past-

But the problem is, while every other character gets to do cool new things or gets to explore new dimensions of themselves, Harley is the lone exception.

What are the two stories that you always assocciate with Harley Quinn *picture of her being bushed out the window by Joker in TAS, and another picture from Eat, Bang, Kill*

And what do they do with Harley in this show?

Starting to see the problem?

Part of why the show is so much fun is that they take all these characters that have been stagnating for years, and do cool and new things with them. Even mr. Freeze, who’s become the literally- thing in the entire world. But Harley goes trough the same story she always goes trough. And once the Joker is out of the picture and she hooks up with Ivy, the show is left with her having literally nothing left to do aside from playing Side kick to Ivy’s plan to creating Eden.

About the only real improvement they’ve made to the character, was getting away from Tara Strong’s impression of Morton Goldman and just get her a new voice actress, who is also the executive producer. And you know, she does a really good job at doing Harley, but this is about the only interesting thing they do with Harley and even calling that interesting is a stretch.

Despite Harley being the titular character, she’s  given the least real focus apart from the same two stories that were already pretty much pre written. It’s kind of like how Spider Man adaptations always have to carry the burden of having to adapt uncle Ben and Gwen Stacy’s d- Peter being borderline homeless and poverty stricken, and the first time a Spider Man film tried to get away from that stifling mayer, guess who started complaining.

Are they just not allowed to do anything with Harley or do they just not care? She has a small arca bout wanting to take over Gotham in season two, even axing other supervillains one by one, but she gives that up in favor of being with Ivy! Even as far as season three she’s hung up on trying to stick it to the Joker. Harley just doesn’t do anything new, and that’s the weakest element of the show. Think- comic book adaptations are at their worst when they souless.ly go trough the established notions. It’s why Batman movies sucked for so long, because none of the people making them had any interest in the character outside the edgy darkness brutal man, which has been the meyer the character has been stuck in for quite some time. All the Batman characters are stuck in the stagnating swamp of fanboy expectations, but in this show at least, they managed to go out of it and be fun again, but Harley is still stuck in that swamp. I want them to do something else with her. I think the show should have started with Ivy and Harley already together, because then it would force the writers to have a new idea about the character that is in the fucking title.

Harley as a stand-alone villain never made any sense, she doesn’t have a villanous goal, she doesn’t want anything. She’s always ultimately been a henchman, but her solo act has always lacked motivation. Ivy has reason to be a villain, she has a real goal in mind, she does evil to achieve something, but Harley’s ever been a villain because the people she’s dating have been villains. Hell, she actually had a conventional job she was actually good at, but she threw it away because of bog fangirl biastophilic, and that’s a part of her character that never really went away. It would be interesting to unpack, I mean, she basically jumps from one supervillain that treated her like shit, to one that just happens to not. In season one she joined the League of Doom just to be treaded seriously as a villain which she never is and ultimately gives up on. After that, not much, at the end of season three even she has a crisis over if she’s even evil or not, but in the end all she ever just does is fill in for Batman, while he’s in prison, once again playing second fiddle to other people. Even ion Eat Bang Kill was more focused on Ivy than Harley, this is a problem company wide, even when they bring in good writers *shows picture of Tee Franklin*, Harley’s just stuck in the same place.

So far she’s been moving around two different storylines, not really committing to anything and ultimately ending up right back to where her character started as, as the henchwoman toa villain slash Batgirl, who’s actually carrying some fucking cards.

And i wouldn’t mind that if they would just stick to it. I don’t object to a character stepping back and deciding their role is just going to be Bong, Goons, Kiss Wife, heck, I’ve even written characters like that (A/N: she didn’t have any visuals fort his part, so I don’t know who she’s talking about).

Being a supporting character isn’t bad, but I know for a fact that the next time we see Harley after this shins end, will hit the reset, and she will go trough the exact character arc all over again, because this is what comic book adaptations are now. Constantly re-threating the same story and never bothering to do anything else and not committing to anything for very long.

The MCU tried to do something new with Peter Parke, getting away from the established formula and asshole fanboys bitched and moaned incessantly, because he wasn’t street anymore, to the point where they hit the reset and put him right in the misery porn that Peter’s been stuck in for a long time, and overall the character has been poorer for it. He lost his identity and became just another Spider Man fort he pile.

I don’t know how to fix it without committing to something. If you want Harley to be Ivy’s supporting character, fine, but don’t hit the reset button just to do it again later on. But it’s not fine to, every time they start over, pretend that it's  a bold new step fort he character. That’s why DC properties are so fucking boring. They’re just recycling the same few interpretation of the same characters that are kind of bad. Like, Batman is an interesting character, but you wouldn’t know that if you only watched the theatrical films, because the theatrical film are pulling only from the same four comic books, that also happen to be the edgiest, and two of them are fucking satires in the first place.

+like, fuck off Joker, you are not a victim- and you get films that completely miss the point of them, because they just wanted to write edgelord fanfiction. And these one dimensional versions of these characters are something the fanbase not only tolerates, but applauses.

There is this scene from Justice League Unlimited that people pass around as an example of what Batman should be like. You probably seen it, it’s the scene where Batman comforts Ace as she’s dying. It’s the scene every person complaining about modern Batman cites, but you ever noticed that they only ever cite this one scene? It’s because it’s really hard to find Batman moments like this. They don’t let him be that way very much, because the fanbase only wants psycho thug Batman. They’re the same group of people who wants cartoons to be grittier and more adult, but Warner Brothers made the critical mistake of actually listening to these fucking clowns.

That’s where we are with Harley, because part of the reason why her only stories are the Jokers girlfriend, or abuse victim, or Ivy’s girlfriend, is because by and large, the audience only wants those thre stories. And the times when they try something different, the audience turns their nose immediately. As it stands, Harley is DC’s own banshee queen, she’s stuck in this rut with a fanbase that, fort he most part, doesn’t want her to move anywhere, and the potential the character has is squandered by everybody, creator and fan alike.

Harley Quinn is a great show, but it’s not because of Harley herself. Season one has Harley dealing with who she is, and by the end of season three she still hasn’t answered that question. The romance is really good, and all the other characters are really good, but Harleys character arc cist decidedly undercooked.

Is that everything? I think that’s everything. Everything that matters anyway.

OQM Playlist: Life during quarantine #17

With a new life during quarantine playlist Nick Triani contemplates feeling out of touch with modern pop music and what might motivate reconnection.

Out of place and out of time During 2020, I’ve had time to reflect about myself and what I do. This year working professionally with new music has also signified a massive change in how I relate to music itself. Of course, a lot of that feeling has to do with the surreal nature of the times, but also, for the first time I don’t feel much empathy with the current bunch of mainstream musicians. And by mainstream I mean the top 20, the hit makers, this tik-tok generation of pop stars.

At 54 years of age I should just be satisfied that I’ve tried to hang in so long, tried to understand the new productions, new styles, the spotify tailored hit making process. Music from the label I run and and a lot of the music I work with has certainly been influenced or impacted by the maneuvers of the mainstream industry over the last almost ten years.

The biggest of course being the gradual move from a physical model to a streaming model, the way the public interacts with their music nowadays. That’s why during this pandemic Bandcamp‘s resistance for the artist feels so morally superior, and perhaps reflective of where our energies should be focused right now. But I digress.

The standard is in the standard There is a realisation of my own maturing of course. I have far more interest in jazz than pop nowadays – and I mean that vast catalog of old jazz (not the new retro variety.) Still, I remain in thrall to the fabric of underground music that still excites me more than ever.  The other side of the picture, if you like, and what feels to me like the place where most of the interesting stuff happens. The arty side of music without getting too pompous about it.

I can’t relate to any modern pop music – it’s the sound of anemic production to me. And ultimately that’s OK – I’m not the target audience and as the critical community looks for any crumb of subversion or excitement, perhaps in these ‘difficult times’ we can let that lie for now. Or should we be asking for more from our popstars? This has nothing to do with the awful authenticity, but all to do with attitude. And yes, secretly I still care about this.

Have we still got it?  Ultimately, we could look back at that premise of what gave pop music its initial spark. Yes, I’m talking about talent. Not some taught talent but a natural instinctive talent that ultimately leads to something different. We should adjust our standards beyond the level of how good the social media campaign was for any given release. A lot of that great music is still out there, a whole subculture of interest lurking deeper down. Look behind the curtain that yielded the need for Taylor Swift to dip her toe into ‘mainstream indie’ and you might be surprised at what you find. Tunes, ideas and innovation. Someone hand Antti Tuisku the new Arca album and let’s really subvert it.

I’m still willing to back the artists where my jaw drops in wonder and I’m left with the feeling of ‘how I wish I could do that.’ That great lyric, that killer vocal, making the difference and bringing the emotion. As popular music fades into nostalgia for a better time, when supposed ‘real’ popstars and personalities walked the earth, perhaps we could just ask for more from our current crop – less of the plucking from behind the supermarket till and more of the alien, out of this world variety. Yes, I’m sure I sound like an old reactionary, but Pop, make me feel somethingagain.

Is my weariness – rather than old age – a reaction to the destructive capitalism that has reduced  pop music to another tier on Jeff Bezos‘s consumerist Valhalla – this has ultimately destroyed the spirit and artfulness of pop music.  Could it be that it’s not the fault of the individual stars or young kids coming up through their insta/tik-tok but the structural mould of capitalism which has sucked the air out of any outlandishness and commodified it.
