I imagine 'can't keep a straight face while I'm praying' as Phil trying to get Wil to meditate but they end up laughing + 'don't you revolve around someone else' as a chide to Philza post Anderson's death)

Love Me, Normally (If he were honest with himself. Wilbur is wracked with jealousy for humanity that he disguises as hatred. Die young mentality, insomnia, bridge 2 addressed to the void, 'Is it courageous or escapist to leave the quarantine when you’re contagious?' as a comment on the danger of anomalies and if they should be contained)

BlackBoxWarrior (An entire life spent running from the Foundation and their experiments + trauma, repressing the past, general void madness, 'a map to every victim of his love' as the scars the void has left)

The Blade:

Red Water Dreams by Aviators (The sea motif of the voices, being a vessel for The Blood God, finding blame in those who unleashed his apocalyptic revenge. The entire chorus fits so well. 'Vicious thoughts are stirring/And I hunger for their power')

Paralyzed by Aviators (He's just an Aviators boy, what can I say, it's the violence and upbeat tempos man. Really this is The Blood God's song. His challengers as a duty to cull, as he's forced to hunt down every last foe that laid a hand upon his vessel. The thrill of battle, impending doom, 'I will give you one fair chance' because he really does seek a good fight. The Blade is the one paralyzed, unable to do anything but watch as his body is used for destruction)

Turn Out the Lights by The Crane Wives (Because The Blade does actually handle The Blood God/voices pretty well. I feel this song captures the way he just sorta rolls his eyes and shrugs off the intrusive thoughts most of the time)

Philza:

Rule #9 - Child of the Stars by Fish in a Birdcage (Wilbur as a wanderer, but works for any Collected for fostering their growth. Father vibes. Philza raising his children to be strong, independent people. A gentle expectation of greatness, because he picks out the exceptional among humanity)

Hot Tea by Half Alive (His sheer adoration of his Collected, also fun to swap the roles so that it is the god showing devotion. The pure warmth and sweetness matches Philza. In retrospect I need a song about protective violence but eh I set a 3 song limit.)

Time Machine by Miracle Musical (Amnestic arc. Particularly with loneliness and the vehemence in 'look at what you've done now to me', as well as 'I'm leaving today, today' with his confused insistence that he leaves at the end of the week. The way Philza is dragged in and out of grief at the whims of the Foundation, left free floating and disorientated)

Tubbo:

Soap by The Oh Hellos (Actual perfect Tubbo song. WHiT Croplands interlude. Themes of pacifism, how Tubbo is made of pieces, the separation between humans and anomalies and how the Hivemind can cross that barrier. Learning when to let go/hold on with the Tommy, Hive members, Willow. The 2nd chorus as Rhodes trying to convince Tubbo to leave Tommy in Jasper, with the response of 'I think that you’re worth (keeping around/holding onto)' to both Rhodes and Tommy's Never Love an Anchor. And imagining Tubbo saying the last stanza to Tommy makes me so soft)

Escapism by Rebecca Sugar (Dissociation. Grey chapter in general, specifically Pewter for being firm in convictions: 'shouldn't show a trace of doubt' and telling Rosalind the sacrifice won't hurt them, as well as trying to force a dissociative episode when their hand is sawed off)

Saint Bernard by Lincoln (ok this is a troll but also fits well for Cinnabar and Old Gauze. The guilt of failing one's morals. Technically Tubbo is in Indiana satanic and chained up, but I'll let it slide. The Saint Calvin verse is so good for the Rhodes-Tommy tension + Foundation destroying families. Also the way Tubbo blames their self-loathing on Rosalind, making the chorus apt for the Hivemind mess) (but also its funny to give Tubbo the classic edgy character song)

(Bonus) Dr. Blake:

Take Me to War by The Crane Wives (She sees herself as forced to be ruthless to survive against powerful anomalies. 'And I'll rankle the beasts with words' for her manipulation. Also epithets in the dehumanizing way the Foundation avoids names. Verse 3 is Tubbo 'corrupting' the guards when they saved humans from Philza)

Solaria, Kevin / End-World Normopathy by GHOST (Tommy, with religious themes and verse 5/Kevin understood as The Blood God. The cold cruelty of the Foundation, sentience as a failure/flaw in a tool (Tommy), Dr. Blake completely separating her personal and professional selves because to have humanity is only a weakness anomalies will exploit. 'Though you’ll never die, you’ve found that/All eyes are staring at your hands' is an absolutely perfect line for summoning sessions)

Etho can get flattened by an anvil and be perfectly fine. Tango literally bursts into flames when angry. Zedaph can put on a little mask and become instantly unrecognizable. They're all cartoons!

i saw someone on twitter writing qsmp names in korean and im trying so hard not to be bothered i know they have good intentions but it was just so wrong in parts so instead here's how qsmp names would be written in korean BY THE SOUND not how they're written. note that i am not korean nor on the korean side of qsmptwt but as a casual kpoppie it's a rite of passage to learn hangul and try to learn korean at one point therefore though i am not a trusted source i do know the basics of the phonetics LUL

badboyhalo: 밷보이헤이로 (baed-bo-i-he-i-ro/lo) i infer it'd be easier to just call him 헤이로 out of every part of him name please let's halo-truth bbh. the 헤이 slurs into the "hey/hei" sound, very little accentuation on the just one part, it works as one!!

dantdm: 단티디엠 or 댄티디엠 (dan-ti-di-em, daen-ti-di-em) i've heard both pronunciations for the name dan, it's a matter of preference here! EDIT: also possibly 댼 instead which is also daen but like, not really? but also they're really similar? and i don't know how to hear the difference but there is one and nevermind don't worry about it man

fit: 피트 (pi-teu) directly would be 핕 but that's just a tricky one it's bound to have a soft ㅡ sound following

german: 헤르만 or 헬만 (he-reu/leu-man, her/hel-man) same thing as last note applies here! it'd sound like HED-man more than HER-man but, still, could work!

luzu, arin: 루쥬 or 루주, 아린 (ru/lu-jyu, ru/lu-ju, a-rin/lin) no notes! i see luzu more said with the 쥬 sound instinctively but it's one of those either or i think EDIT: if it were the spain pronunciation i think it'd be 루튜 (lu-tyu) or 루뜌 (lu-ddyu) ??? the thhh sound doesn't exist in korean but this is the closest it gets i think

maximus, maxo: 맠수머스, 맠서 (mak-su-meo-seu, mak-seo) okay at this point my brain is mush and im sure there's a better way to write this but it's a tricky one. the 맠 could also be 막 (mag) but im unsure where in the mouth the difference is between 맠 and 막, because hangul is very mouth oriented, it's allll about tongue placement, and i am SO not on that X_X EDIT: i change my mind it's 막 for maximus but 맠서 is fine i think idk how to explain is just is. also alternate pronunciationfor maximus: 막씨머스 (mag-ssi-meo-seu)

cellbit: 셀비트 (sel-bi-teu) guys this is getting hard. yes it's somehow sel and not se-leu. yes it's bi-teu and somehow not bit. if it were bit it'd be missing the aftermath TCH sound and i think it sounds good with it. the sel has space to breathe and isn't abrupt. stay with me. we're almost done EDIT: fellow hangul enjoyer anon in ask box said 셀빛 (sel-bich/bit) or 셀비츠 (sel-bi-cheu) if with the accent, i like these, ur getting put on the fridge with the best magnets. 빛 is a fun one because it sounds pretty much the same to 빝 or 빗, all end in the same stop of the tongue going to the roof of the mouth, but 빛 in particular means "light" and i think that's nice :)

felps: 펠릅스 (pel-reub-seu) holy moly i didn't expect this to be a tongue twister but i think i nailed it

You were nothing but buzzing with enthusiasm as you frantically typed into the YouTube search bar, mumbling curses as you keep making typos. When the page finally loads once you hit enter and the search result came about, your eyes lit up at the sight of the top video. You immediately clicked on it and once the ad had passed, the familiar voice started talking.

“I’ve had a lot of names.” The person began. “I’ve gone by Wil, Wilbur, William, and people often say to me ‘what’d you want me to call you?’ and it’s just me saying ‘call me what you like.’”

On the other side of your phone screen—and the ocean—the owner of that familiar voice smiled as he heard himself talking and he smiled even wider as he watched your excitement watching the video, wide eyes and all.

“Oh my God. This is huge, Wil—I mean, Genius? Are you kidding me?” You said, practically beaming. “How long have you kept this a secret?”

Wilbur ruffled his hair and rubbed his eyes. “Been awhile actually. Thought I’d wait until the video came out before sharing the news.”

“I’m so happy for you and the guys.”

“Thanks, love.“ He said. “You don’t think I look...odd in that video right?”

You frowned, then looked back to your laptop trying to see something that you might’ve missed. When you didn’t find anything, you turned back to Wilbur.

“I don’t see anything weird. I mean, you do look a little tired.” You paused for a second, eyes widening when a thought appeared in your mind. “Wait. You’re not drunk in this right? You look a little hazy in the eyes and when you’re singing—well, when you’re talking I suppose. You know, I’m slightly disappointed that you didn’t sing the words.

“Okay, first, I am not fucking drunk, thank you very much. That would be unprofessional of me to do so.”

You playfully shook your head and rolled your eyes, smiling while Wilbur continued talking.

“But, yes, I was pretty tired when filming that. That’s why I asked if I looked weird. And second, no, I don’t want to sing my own lyrics to a bunch of stranger whilst explaining what they mean. It’s...weird.”

You frowned, again. “You literally sing to a bunch of strangers as a career, Wil.”

“Well, yeah. But, that’s different.”

“Different how?” You countered.

Wilbur stared at you through the screen, as if daring you to say something more. You leaned your head on your hand, cheekily smiling at him.

“You’re lucky I love you.”

“I love you too, William.”

“That sounds weird coming from you, love.”

“Well, you did say ‘call me what you like’ right? I’m only taking you up on that offer, darling.”

Ik ben echt niet gemaakt voor deze wereld en ik wil niet in clichés vervallen, maar het is zo gemakkelijk. Want ik wil gewoon dansen en zingen en poëzie schrijven en kunst maken. Ik wil in een bos zitten en rondlopen en paddestoelen bekijken. En natuurlijk wil ik mij als persoon (blijven) ontwikkelen, maar ik wil geen cursussen volgen, noch webinars bekijken of seminaries bijwonen. Ik wil gewoon paarden aaien en daaruit leren dat een dier dat mij met één welgemikte trap kan doden ook kan schrikken van mijn plotse beweging. Net zoals ik kan schrikken van iemand die een plotse beweging maakt. Want wij zijn beiden prooidieren. Maar ik ben ook een roofdier. Zie je dan niet hoe ik op mezelf jaag? Omdat ik alles goed wil doen. Alleen, geld en succes interesseren mij helemaal niets en mijn grootste "ambitie" is om zo mens mogelijk te zijn. Perfect imperfect zijn. Maar ik ben zo'n gevoelige persoon en de meningen van anderen zijn wel belangrijk voor mij. Zo belangrijk zelfs dat ik soms niet kan maken wat ik wil maken, want het zal toch niet goed zijn. Zo belangrijk zelfs dat ik mezelf in stukken snijd en al mijn "tekortkomingen" uitvergroot. Altijd maar in cirkels lopen om uit te dokteren of ik nu wel of niet schoon ben zoals ik ben, of ik nu toch de moeite waard ben of niet. En natuurlijk ben ik dat, want tekortkomen voor wat? En voor wie? Voor mensen die mij niet kennen? Voor een systeem dat toch niet om zijn mensen geeft? Maar natuurlijk ben ik dat niet, want de maatschappij legt zoveel eisen en (schoonheids)idealen op, en we zijn zo zo gemeen voor elkaar. Elke uiterlijke en innerlijke afwijking van die opgelegde idealen, van het vooropgestelde maatschappelijk en sociaal pad, wordt zo zwaar bestraft. Maar dit gaat allemaal zo hard in tegen mijn overtuiging dat kunst maken en dansen en zingen niet gaat om "goed of slecht zijn", maar om creëren en zich (emotioneel) uiten. Zelfexpressie is per definitie subjectief en gaat zoveel dieper dan of iets commercieel is of niet. Dit gaat allemaal zo hard in tegen mijn wil om zoveel mogelijk mens te zijn. Want wat dan als mijn tanden een beetje scheef staan of niet schitterend wit zijn? Of wat dan als ik eens compleet naast het ritme dans? Zie je dan niet dat ik leef? Dat ik een dier van vlees en bloed ben? Een mens. Geen robot of object dat naar de pijpen van de poppenmeester danst.

Baihe novels I read in 2023, in order of when I read them:

Miss Forensics by Jiu Nuan Chun Shen. Contemporary thriller featuring a push-pull romance between a forensic pathologist and a police detective. Big action scenes, big emotional set-pieces, big emotions.

Distance by Mi Nao Nao. Contemporary romance billed as 'woman who has broken a thousand hearts vs woman who has never lost her heart'. I found it underwritten and lacking in structure, but lots of people seem to like it.

The Collapsing Palace by Ming Ye. Historical palace harem novel. A wilful noblewoman marries her cousin, the crown prince, so she can get close to his mother/her aunt the empress, whom she's been crushing on since forever. And she's not even the most toxic / messed up main character in this novel.

Life is Like a Dream by Qing Xiang. A short novel set in the Yue opera scene during the Republican Era. Small-scale, elegantly understated, makes highly effective of use of the author's detailed knowledge of opera and the opera scene.

Suffocation by Hua Qiong Ran. One of those 'toxic lesbians' contemporary thrillers, featuring the protagonist being repeatedly stalked and imprisoned by her own wife. Amped up the depravity too quickly to be wholly effective.

Zebra Crossing by Yi Bai Shou. Early baihe novel featuring a romance between a CEO and police detective, a mixture of thriller and romance. Strong beginning with appealing characters, somewhat let down by meandering middle and end and odd approach to extras.

She Belongs to Me by Da Ying. An uncomplicated contemporary romance between two femme professional women who are excellent communicators. Does make effective use of several k-drama style romantic set-pieces.

Bo Zhou by Ruo Hua Ci Shu. Time loop contemporary romance in which the protagonist tries to safe her girlfriend's life again and again. Overall competently plotted, well-paced and genuinely suspenseful.

The Tribulation of the Peach Runaway Blossom by Ning Yuan. A solid xianxia/xuanhuan novel with a big cast of complex female characters, competent world-building and assured prose. Somewhat falls down on the main romance (though the secondary romances make up for that a little), which was at once the lynchpin of the plot and not particularly present on the page.

The Abandoned by Mu Feng Qing Nian. Three words: sapphic xianxia shizunfuckery. Horny unhinged lesbians, plot twists on top of plot twists, and much violence.

Her Mountain, Her Sea by Fu Hua. A contemporary high school romance. Very solid, competent slice-of-life for the most part. The leads are well-characterised and their growing relationship is deftly handled, especially in the early stages.

The Creator's Grace by Ning Yuan. A near future sci-fi thriller. 12/10, no notes (though the sci-fi element is subordinate to the romance and thriller elements).

Minister Xie by Ruo Hua Ci Shu. This historical novel is The Goblin Emperor meets Sha Po Lang. Teenage emperor Liu Zao does her best to turn her prime minister Xie Yi (who is 14 years older) into her wife.

Snow on Her Pillow by Liu Yuan Chang Ning. Historical fiction featuring a romance between Princess Jieyou and her devoted attendant Feng Liao (described as the first official female diplomat in Chinese history). Competently and compellingly written; manages the Feat of treating Central Asian characters (of which there are many) as regular, undemonised people.

Spring on the River by Da Ying. This xuanhuan novel features supernatural women behaving very very badly, weird structure and pacing, and a rather hapless main character who frequently reminded me of a protagonist in a shoujo reverse harem novel.

Listen, God by Xian Yu Bu Chi Cai. A contemporary time loop thriller featuring a romance between a scriptwriter and an up-and-coming actress. Mostly carefully and cleverly plotted (though starts to unravel in the last 20%), though the relationship development between the leads left me cold.

A Taste of You by Si Bai Ba Shi Si. A contemporary romance between a talented chef and a CEO. A grounded, realist novel told through a charmingly wry first-person POV (bar a sharp swerve into melodrama in the last 10%), deeply embedded in the local lesbian scene.

Snow in the Spring Courtyard by Liu Yuan Chang Ning. This wuxia novel had good relationship development, a compelling love interest, and excellent pacing, and is likely to appeal to readers for those reasons. For me personally, it was let down by an extraordinarily bleak view of the jianghu which I don't think the author was fully aware of.

I Think About You Day and Night by Yu Shuang. In this contemporary romance, a CEO rescues a penniless girl from an abusive household, and k-drama-style shenanigans ensue. There's terminal illness, birth secrets, an incest scare (dw they're not actually related), and corporate machinations. The author's commitment to these tropes and their emotional stakes makes this an enjoyably dramatic read.

Cover Her Face by Qing Tang Shuan Xiang Cai. A mostly breezy, mostly fluffy, and unexpectedly sexy historical romance plus a dash of wuxia, with likable main characters.

Waiting for You by Min Ran. A contemporary showbiz romance, basically an exes-to-reunited-lovers story courtesy of a handy rebirth and time rewind. Another one for the 'attractive femme couple resolves their relationship problems through Better Communication' folder.

Climbing High by Po Po Po. In this historical court intrigue novel, aspiring scholar Fang Jian sells herself into indentured servitude to court official Gao Yunqu in exchange for the latter's promise to help her free her parents from unjust imprisonment. Published on PO18, so allowed to be sexually explicit in ways JJWXC and Changpei novels can't be, and the author makes full use of this (though I found the sex scenes between the tertiary couples stronger than those between the main couple, for the most part). Very strong political writing, a great cast of complex female characters.

HUT IN HET BOS ALS WIJKPLAATS IN DE NATUUR

Een wondere wereld is het, die ik binnenga in Museum Galerie Heerenveen, op dit moment. Een mysterieus bos betreed ik, een magisch woud. Maar is het wel een boomgaard dat ik zie, een veld met oprijzend gewas. Ik kijk in de donkerte van de duisternis, de nachtelijke uren waarin de betovering van het onzichtbare op een hoogtepunt is. Want er is niets te zien achter de stakerige boomstammen, zo zolang het niet wordt aangelicht. Zo zolang er geen lichtpunt is die de omgeving waarneembaar maakt. Rob Regeer ontsteekt daarom een licht op dat schijnt vanuit een verborgen bron in zijn donkere werken. Is dit het heldere licht van een volle maan of de jager met zaklamp op zoek naar een prooi, jongelui die gedropt zijn en verbeten een uitweg zoeken. Het geeft althans een onwerkelijke sfeer, zet een surrealistische werkelijkheid.

In dat decor spelen oranje stippen een bijrol waar een eenzaam huis de dubieuze hoofdrol krijgt toegeschreven. Die oplichtende punten lijken vuurvliegjes, die het licht van de dag aten om het uit te spuwen in de nacht. Het daglicht klinkt zo door in de nachtelijke duisternis. Yin en yang. Maar het blijken geen puntjes te zijn, maar putjes in de compositie. Wie het werk tot op armlengte nadert ontdekt dat de schildering eigenlijk een reliëf is. De materie ligt dik op het doek. De stammen verheffen zich waarin de putjes verf zich verlagen. De vuurvliegjes blijken kleine klankschalen. Het licht echoot zo geluidloos door het bomenbos.

Die hoogdruk in de verflaag geeft de sfeer een werkelijk voelbare diepte. Het is geen geschilderd perspectief, maar een opgelegde tastbare derde dimensie. Regeer laat overigens geen vergezicht zien, de omgeving is plat tweedimensionaal weergegeven. Er is geen doorkijk naar een einder. Maar door te werken in beeldverhoging en met zichtverlaging wordt een natuurlijke ruimte gecreëerd. Een vierde dimensie is gemaakt door kleurspeling en lichtverhouding. In deze ruimte komt alles samen, voert het gevoel de boventoon. Is de werkelijkheid abstract, versimpeld de realiteit. In de derde worden vragen gesteld die in de vierde dimensie lijken beantwoord.

Regeer maakt niet zomaar ondefinieerbare platen van de realiteit. De kunstenaar wil mijn verbeelding prikkelen door ongerijmde voorstellingen te maken. Mij op een verkeerd been zetten zodat ik ga nadenken over wat ik zie. Mij ga bezinnen op de actualiteit. Maar eerlijk gezegd zie ik het wereldnieuws en de huidige problemen in het ecosysteem niet terug in zijn betrekkelijke schoonheid. De hut in het bos schept vooral een unheimisch gevoel, maar misschien is dat juist ook wel het moment van bezinnen. Nadenken over hoe leeg en onwerkelijk de werkelijkheid straks zal zijn, wanneer wij niets doen aan de afbraak van de natuur door ons toedoen. Want het bos van Regeer is ontbladerd, zelfs kijk ik wel dwars door stammen heen. De afbraak heeft hij in zijn schilderijen ingezet. En daarin huist de mens in  een gezellig aangelichte sfeer in een huisje midden in het bos. Als een Bijbelse Noach, van God verlaten maar toch zo dicht bij het antwoord op de vraag.

Regeer verheerlijkt deze verlatenheid door de intieme toevlucht, het huiselijke asiel, meermalen in 24-delig tableau te plaatsen. Voortdurend hetzelfde huis van onder gezien, in een gewijzigde kleurstelling en een helder tot duister licht. De aldoor veranderende weersomstandigheid ter plaatse. Een eenvoudige opzet die zich telkens herhaalt, een weerklinkende sfeer. Diezelfde optrek komt terug in andere hoedanigheid met een meer uitgewerkte omgeving. Maar aldoor blijft het vreemde en vage gevoel. Het is wel een wijkplaats, maar je weet niet wat je kunt verwachten van de inhoud. Wat daarbinnen achter dat verlichte venster zich afspeelt blijft de vraag. Zo stelt Regeer in zijn werk vragen die onbeantwoord blijven. De oplossing moet ik zelf aangeven. Zo zoals dat meestal werkt in en door een kunstwerk. De beschouwer geeft bescheid.

Een apart onderdeel in deze opstelling bij Museum Galerie Heerenveen is het plateau met ruimtelijke bouwwerken in MDF. Op klein formaat zijn deze huizen modellen van hutten en kappellen. Onderkomens belangrijk in de omgeving van Kellerjoch in Oostenrijk. Voor Regeer ter inspiratie een geliefde plek. In de bergen en door de bossen. Om de sfeer raak te treffen was het voor hem niet genoeg enkel de omgeving weer te geven op het geschilderde vlak, maar wilde hij ook de ruimte in. Daarvan is het dorp de weerslag. Zijn dorp, het Regeer. Aldus wordt de bezoeker van deze kunstruimte de wereld van Rob Regeer in getrokken. Ervaart de schoonheid die niet schijnt te kloppen. De verbeelding krijgt er de ruimte zich te uiten. Het werk ontroerd op een onbestemde manier. Het past esthetisch juist, maar achter die luister klinkt een duister geluid. Het gebeelde mysterie is onheilspellend.
