Not at all!!! League is the opposite of a story-based game. Champions are meant to represent an archetype in the rift and shout some cool catchphrases. MOST are self contained, a few have interwoven plotlines that can span years. Some character stories get updated over time in the form of short fiction / comics / event based visual novels but most of that content can be looked up online.

In the case of jayce/viktor, to make ref easier for all: HERE’S THE JAYVIK LEAGUE LORE CHEAT SHEET.

“v.1″ refers to their original release bios, “v.2″ to post runeterra universe reboot bios. Worth noting that some of these changes were... contentious; blitzcrank’s new origin story as something viktor did not create but simply mod is mostly ignored by fans, who still refer to original events in a vague manner. The omission of stanwick in jayce / blitz’ updated bios is a big questionmark. To get in the spirit of the thing I just go all in the ‘Unreliable Narrator’ aspect of their whole shebang and cobble together my own interpretation of events.

CONVERGENCE: A LEAGUE OF LEGENDS STORY

'CONVERGENCE' is an Ekko-led platformer game that released in 2023. An accompanying free-to-download comic miniseries was made to supplement the game's story, and it focuses on Jayce, Viktor, Ekko himself & his family -- and how they are all interwoven as the 'struggling genius' archetype in a very flawed system.

This series features a retelling of J/V's backstories through the lens of an outsider, and a bit of an update on where they are now. Surprising absolutely no one: they are still very attached to each other. (This comic is standalone, and not part of the Arcane universe.)

[ Jayce Talis’ journal ] was available to read in the league client while the show was airing. “Far From Home” “Progress Day” “A Powerful Partnership” are all diary entries; the layout is a bit finicky but click on chapter numbers to progress, the image on the side changes to match!

Wild Rift limited content:

[ Jayce got a champion release webtoon ] that never made it to NA servers. It quickly summarizes his deal and vaguely hints Viktor is in the update horizon.

There is a tentative translation offered by blessed twitter user crossedfires, highlight being the jayce/viktor panel wherein he remarks:

“Genius is always lonely, I know this truth very well. Until Viktor appeared – I admit it – he is the only gear comparable to me.” (uses the verb xiāngdāng (comparable) that means match, balance, correspond to). One of my mandarin-speaking friends has also pointed out the wordplay lends itself to double meaning; “He is the only gear to match/that matches mine.”

MISC / OFF CANON:

Jayce & Viktor animated stickers

Punches&Plants 2 - Altcanon comedy, various champs living in an urbanized fantasy version of runeterra. Jayce and Viktor retire from a life of rivalry to dedicate themselves to new hobbies. Viktor is a dollmaker, Jayce is a weeb. Blitzcrank has an unfortunate job.

Jayce and Viktor also have plenty of AU ingame skins with their own micro bios. Not linking these here since itd be too much info/ u can easily google; they share the Battlecast universe (ppl like this one) and the Heavy Metal universe (ppl dislike this one for various reasons, namely retconning Viktor’s full machine skin from ‘his last stage of mechanization’ into a very unfortunate stereotype.) They were meant to be an annoying player and an annoyed dungeon master in the Riftquest universe but riot scrapped Viktor’s skin. RIP

Chess at The Muny

(no read more breaks I’m too old for that nonsense)

So it’s not a secret that I love Chess. Florence Vassy is my all-time favorite musical theater female lead. Chess is my favorite musical. I’m so in love with the music, I love the doomed romance of Florence and Anatoly. And some of my favorite musical theater loves (Carolee Carmello, Helen Sjöholm) have played Florence.

I traveled to St. Louis on Friday to see the show Saturday night. I ended up getting a last minute ticket to see the show again Sunday night (because I have no chill and because I’m so in love).

The show was FUCKING AMAZING.

Apart from a few cut verses and altering song order, Chess at The Muny was very similar to the West End / 2008 Royal Albert Hall layout. It was a fully staged show, not a concert, and it was brilliant.

What I absolutely loved was the almost complete absence of a book. Chess has always struggled with a good, solid book, but I really don’t think it needs one. Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus make some of the greatest music in the world - let that music come through. With Tim Rice’s lyrics (and Björn’s assistance - Tim did not write those lyrics on his own) the show is best performed in a rock opera style.

The Muny knew and understood this. Dialogue was brief - some spoken instead of where it had been sung in other versions, some dialogue inserted in just the right place to get the point across - but nothing that relied on a book to move the show forward. It doesn’t need it.

The venue is gorgeous for an outside amphitheater. The stage included a revolving checkered square with stairs and risers. There was a huge screen at the back and two thin screens on either side of the stage. Those were utilized so well - the thin screens showed the hand fidgeting and coughing, etc during Chess #1, while the main screen showed the actual match. There were minimal set pieces - wooden boxes on wheels to be used as chairs / airplane seats / furniture.

The cast was just amazing. Phillip Johnson Richardson plays The Arbiter, balancing the no-nonsense role with the dance moves and swagger that the part requires.

Tally Sessions plays a wicked Molokov, pulling strings and not pulling punches. Rodney Hicks is a perfect Walter de Courcey.

Jarrod Spector was Freddie, playing the petulant man-baby with some legit childhood trauma. His Pity the Child was wonderful - the right amount of self-loathing and pity and bitterness and anger, without being too sympathetic.

Taylor Louderman was Svetlana. I’ll admit that seeing her Saturday night was a little underwhelming for me - I didn’t think she shined as much as I wanted her to with Someone Else’s Story, but she got me with I Know Him So Well, and I thought her performance Sunday night overall was better than Saturday. The back and forth with I Know Him So Well brought things back for me.

John Riddle was Anatoly. I knew nothing of him going into the show. He absolutely blew me away. Where I Want to Be was powerful. Anthem was gut wrenching and gorgeous. And I’m very jealous of him for getting to kiss Jessica Vosk the way he did during the show.

And Jessica Vosk…Jessica Vosk. I knew little about her before the cast was announced, and then I had to go searching for her to vet my Florence. Because Florence is so precious to me, so important.

I knew Florence was in good hands with Jessica when I heard her recorded Nobody’s Side on her album Wild and Free. I was not disappointed this weekend. Jessica Vosk as Florence was EVERYTHING I wanted her to be, especially for my first time seeing Chess live.

Jessica’s Florence was jaded and professional and intrigued by Anatoly and touch-starved and bitter and angry and Nobody’s Side had just enough longing and punch in it.

They shortened the song - cut out the last verse after “never waste a hot afternoon” which meant they cut the long “don’t forget the best will go wrong” rift which is my favorite. But there’s a break earlier which gave JV an impressive vocal rift there - similar to what’s on her recorded Nobody’s Side.

I will always be partial to the Swedish staging of Nobody’s Side - because who doesn’t want angry/hurt Florence drinking and grinding with strangers in a nightclub - but it doesn’t fit in this production. And there’s something special about Helen Sjöholm being the only one to perform that staging - because HS is a dream and I am very gay.

The chemistry between Vosk and Riddle made me all smiling and tingly, and they had two almost-kisses and then a very long intense kiss and the romantic sap in me was very happy.

I also absolutely LOVED having a young Florence and her father in some flashbacks - in Budapest is Rising, in Florence Quits (I believe they were there - it’s getting a bit muddled in my mind). But multiple times where we see a young Florence run across the stage, or being carried by her father, or their separation. Oh it was so good.

The ending and You and I always gets me emotional. Again - Jessica Vosk portrays Florence with all the heartbreak and emotion I need. The repeated “losing my man and getting nothing in return” made me cry, and then I was sobbing during the Epilogue.

THIS is the version of Chess that should be revived on Broadway. It’s perfect as a rock opera. Keep it that way. Add in a little bit of dialogue if absolutely needed. We don’t need the self-defacing humor of the newest Danny Strong book. We don’t need the CIA, or fake Gregor, or sympathetic Molokov. This staging is perfect. This is what I want to see on Broadway.

I wish I could have seen the show 100 times. I’m extremely fortunate and grateful that I saw it twice. And that I got my program signed by Jessica Vosk - so now I’ve got signatures from three different actresses playing Florence.

There’s TikTok videos of pieces of the show floating around. I’d love to get my hands on a proper boot of the show. My phone battery is shit so it wasn’t gonna be me.

It was gorgeous and amazing and thrilling and everything I wanted and I hope to see more of it soon. With a good cast like this, worthy of taking on these roles.

Dota 2 is a game focused on strategy, builds, and how to make your character as powerful as possible. Pokemon Unite’s simple and clean interface works on Switch, and you rarely have to worry about builds, which is essential in Dota 2. However, the first ranked season of the game has already begun. However, Pokemon Unite is aimed at all ages, with it seemingly to be a MOBA just for fun. They both have starkly different audiences, with Dota 2 being aimed at the esports scene, even being nominated for multiple awards in that space since 2014. The biggest difference between Dota 2 and Pokemon Unite is the complexity between the games. Pokemon Unite is Very Different from Dota 2 When I tested it out earlier, we found that despite the map being on the top left, it was still very easy to not see Pokemon coming at you, and them just appearing suddenly on screen. Although there is a map visible showing where all of the characters are at all times, it is still relatively easy to get flanked, which is mildly similar to Pokemon Unite. With Smite, you are essentially in a third-person-shooter-style camera, where you see behind the character with minimal visibility across the map. One of the biggest differences between Smite and Pokemon Unite is the camera. Smite is one of the very few MOBAs currently out on Switch, making it one of the biggest competitors against Pokemon Unite currently. These are harder to kill, and can end up contested by the other team, so watch out! Not only are there small singular Pokemon that walk around the map, allowing you to easily kill them without too much hassle, there are bigger packs, as seen in the screenshot below. Instead of bribing or killing them so that they join you in the fight, they give you XP and Aeos energy, which you then use to score a goal in the game, instead of destroying towers and the like. Oftentimes, this allows your hero to level up, where you then choose the ability best suited for the fight - which is exactly what you do in Pokemon Unite! In Heroes of the Storm, scattered across the map there are mobs which you can kill or bribe in order to gain XP and help on the battlefield. Surprisingly, Pokemon Unite has a couple of similarities with Heroes of the Storm, a MOBA that is significantly less popular than others on the market, such as Smite and Dota 2. The interface is much smaller, and takes up less of the screen, giving the player easier access to the battlefield and more vision to know what is happening. In Pokemon Unite, it’s a different ball game instead, you level up your Pokemon where, depending on the type of the Pokemon, they may evolve, which makes them more powerful. Pokemon Unite is also different in the sense that there are no item builds that the player will have to worry about. In Pokemon Unite, they are a lot smaller and take up less room on the screen, allowing the player to see more of the battlefield. In League of Legends, there are seven main buttons that you need to press, and in Wild Rift they are all cramped in the bottom right of the screen. The layout of the screen on Pokemon Unite is very minimalist in comparison to Wild Rift. Wild Rift is based off one of the most popular MOBAs on PC, League of Legends. It’s important to compare it to one of the most popular mobile MOBAs today: League of Legends: Wild Rift. Pokemon Unite is very much trying to be a mobile MOBA, as it will be releasing on mobile later this year, but for now it is on Nintendo Switch exclusively. Pokemon Unite vs League of Legends: Wild Rift It’s a 5v5 battle, and the premise of the game is to level up and store as much Aeos energy as you can before going to the enemy side of the battlefield and scoring a goal. The matches go on for 10 minutes, with a “quick” match being unlocked later down the line, where the matches are five minutes long instead. Players can expect to see some of their favorites on the battlefield: Pikachu, Charmander, Metagross, Zeraora, and Alolan Ninetales to name a few. Pokemon Unite is set on Aeos Island, where you will encounter the Unite Battle Committee, which is responsible for running the Unite Tournaments. What similarities do they have, if any, and is it a vastly different game to what is already on the market? After playing for a while, let’s look into how it compares to some of the most popular MOBAs on the market. It is a Multiplayer Online Battle Arena that most people will be able to access, without needing a Nintendo Switch Online membership.
