Saying "I don't like this ship because my fave is just a side character/extension of this ship" is weird. Like it could be valid criticism if you worded it differently.

Maybe take the criticism up with the writers. Because the ship isn't inherently why your fave is lacking in depth, because your fave has been in a relationship before and still had depth. It's obviously on the writers. You can be upset without trying to water it down to simply "this ship is the reason my fave is not as defined as previous gen"
