will never get over the fact that mr. heathcliff and mr. arthur huntington are canonically more attractive than mr. rochester.

aside from the fact that they're both described as being handsome, and mr. rochester is described as being not handsome, we can see this play out in the text. while it's a point that mr. rochester's love interests only want him for his money/status, with arthur and heathcliff that's not entirely the case (you could argue that isabella is partly concerned with heathcliff's newfound wealth, but imo if he wasn't handsome as well, she probably wouldn't bother).

like helen I Love My Bible graham sees arthur and immediately starts drawing and painting him to sublimate her very very obvious attraction that everyone (including him) is aware of. even though she's told he's horrible, she says I CAN FIX HIM!!!! JUST LOOK AT HIM!!! and annabella just openly cheats on her husband with him for years. like helen, isabella linton is told that heathcliff is horrible but she's like BUT HOW CAN THAT BE TRUE WHEN HANDSOME? HAVE YOU SEEN HIM? and as soon as mr. lockwood meets heathcliff in the very beginning he becomes obsessed with him. even after heathcliff lets him be attacked by his vicious dogs, mr. lockwood refuses to leave him alone. not to mention that even the initially biased and usually critical nelly agrees that he's handsome, and cathy literally dying because she regrets not marrying him

— although cathy/heathcliff's bond is much more than skin deep / isn't about looks or regular forms of attraction (bc they have an almost twin-like, spiritual bond) i feel like seeing him healthy and handsome and "glowed up" really hurt cathy 10x more than she was hurt before his return, bc back then she could maybe try to delude herself out of missing him as much by remembering him when he was in his slovenly servant role & embarrassing her infront of the lintons — but seeing proof of his potential & that he always did have it in him to accrue & maintain wealth/education/fashion (and yes, good looks too), & that he could've/would've done so if he'd married her, is really what helped to kill her (aside from... y'know, the whole childbirth thing of course - but the narrative does heavily imply that the drama from heathcliff's return decreased her chances of surviving childbirth, so when i refer to her death, i'm looking at the more internal/emotional causes)

okay posting this now because i feel like the surprise song combo was so intentional and i hope we get to hear more about it on ttpd !! the getaway car/august/other side of the door mashup got my gears turning and now i can’t get them to stop.

the common thread between those three songs is the third party — i wanted leave him i needed a reason, you weren’t mine to lose, was she worth this? — and i know that basically ever since the breakup people have wondered if joe cheated, and this seemed like it could have confirmed it. while i definitely see the evidence for that, it hasn’t quite seemed like the right fit to me, and after this surprise song combo i finally figured out why. i don’t think that the third party she was singing about in melbourne was an actual person, but the idea of a person.

a huge theme on midnights is what led her to being who she is now. she is both the anti-hero and bejeweled, a mastermind and the unreliable narrator in dead reader… there are so many different versions of herself. clearly she was contemplating these different versions and the implications of being each of them.

a huge theme in gothic literature are characters that are not present in the setting, but the idea of them and what they would do is so strong that they end up influencing the story anyways. this happens in rebecca, the novel that inspired tolerate it, where the main character is haunted by living in the glorious shadow that rebecca cast, an impossible standard to live up to, despite the fact that rebecca died and actually, crucially, wasn’t as great as everyone made her out to be. but it doesn’t matter that she wasn’t that great or that she’s never actually there to be truly compared to because it’s the IDEA of rebecca that’s so powerful. it’s the GHOST that haunts the narrative.

and i wonder if that was part of what drove taylor and joe apart? not an actual ~other woman~ but the idea of who taylor could have been instead. all of the other versions of herself she contemplated on midnights. the third party she seemed to be singing about. even on other albums, before this, she’s contemplated what version of herself could be loved — “i’ve been the archer, i’ve been the prey, who could ever leave me darling but who could stay?” i wonder if there was an idea of taylor (a taylor that isn’t “too big to hang out”) that was so palpable, so real, that it ended up taking up the space of another person and haunting their narrative anyways? because, like the main character in rebecca, how could she live up to the idea of a perfect life?

basically: how can you say that you love someone you can’t tell has died? did you love the real me or the version of me in your head that perfectly fit into your world?

#it’s like in wuthering heights after catherine dies and heathcliff begs to be haunted by her #like. they could have been together when she was alive. but the ghost of her is far more powerful than the real woman ever was. #because it’s the IDEA of love and happiness and a perfect life. and that idea can’t be touched! #and a real human person can’t live up to that!! that’s what happens to the main character in rebecca and to heathcliff! #like yeah it would be great if we had no problems and had the exact same interests and wants and didnt have to compromise on anything #but a real human being will never be like that. and we know taylor swift is midnight rain #she does not want it comfortable. she wants to roll up her sleeves and attack the hard things #but how can you attack or dissect or truly understand the idealized version of you living in someone’s head? #when that version of you doesn’t want what you want or have the same fragile human feelings you do? #much to think about. both rebecca and wurhering heights were books i GREATLY enjoyed. #i could be reading into nothing here but dont worry. thats never stopped me before! #taylor swift #ttpd #eras tour #random thoughts with grace

I feel like there's sort of a difference between being a villain and being an antagonist, right? Like most villains are antagonists, but not all antagonists are villains

And I've been watching the 2005 movie over and over again because if I watch the 1995 version, I'll never make contact with the outside world again. I was gifted a large book that is the full collection of Jane Austen, and I know if I read one of the stories, I'll have to sit and read the rest, too.

Gosh, and then whenever I read Jane Austen, I crave reading Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte and then the rest of her and her sisters' works.

It's just an endless cycle that I can't fight.

Bee and puppycat lazy in space I love you so so much it's not even funny

#ramblings of a lunatic #decided to rewatch it again bc the toh finale has had me in a tizzy and while I'm getting better #it's definitely been hard just floating about in fandom space knowing that the show is ending and that in the scenario we do get more of it #in another form ofc #it won't be for a long time yknow? #it's saddening and back in September when i was uh. Very Sad bapc was really there for me #i was out here ardently defending the netflix series' writing bc i genuinely thought it was really good #and i still do #but more than that this show is intensely comforting in a way i can't really place/describe #it's a magical girl show. it's a workplace comedy. 99% of the cast is 25 years or older. its a coming of age story. #it's has pastel and lo-fi art direction. it's cosmic horror. the main character is so caring and yet so selfish and also autistic #and a robot #all of her romantic relationships are intensely weird and frankly are her least interesting dynamics #her most interesting dynamics are with her roomate/pet who's actually a space pirate cursed to look like a marketable plushy #and with her 8 year old landlord who's mom was childhood best friends with her dad making them family in a sense #except they're not really. also they're foils (she's an immature adult he's a kid who tries to be more responsible than he is) #it's filled with intense melancholy and multiple characters suffer from un-talked about depression #it is one of the cutest and brightest shows i have ever seen (in a non-obnoxious or technicolor way) and has an intense air of whimsy #it kinda has a fandom but not a big one despite having an undeniable impact in online animation culture and a bit on online culture overall #I'm not captivated by it in a fandom-y sense but i am obsessed with it. it's like wuthering heights to me #i love this show
