The 105 days of battle of the Winter War ended on 13 March 1940 in a peace treaty signed in Moscow the previous night.

On most fronts, peace had come just in the nick of time. Now the heavy price of this peace was just starting to dawn on the exhausted Finnish population. Bitterness and resentment would remain.

One Soviet soldier asked a comrade with Finnish roots: ‘Tell me honestly, what kind of a character do the Finns possess? … They say the Finns are mean.’ His comrade replied: ‘They are not mean, they just really hold a grudge. They remember who has done them harm in the past. God forgives, the Finns do not.’

This statement would prove to be somewhat prophetic, as less that a year later the two nations would again find themselves at war.

Useimmilla rintamilla rauha tuli aivan viime tingassa. Nyt rauhan raskas hinta alkoi sarastaa uupuneissa suomalaisissa. Katkeruus ja kauna jäivät.

Eräs puna-armeijan sotilas kysyi suomalaisjuuria omaavalta toveriltaan: "Kerropa, millainen on suomalaisten luonne?… Sanotaan että suomalaiset ovat häijyjä." Toveri vastasi: "Eivät he ole häijyjä, he vain kantavat totisesti kaunaa. He muistavat, ketkä aiemmin ovat heitä rikkoneet. Jumala antaa anteeksi, suomalaiset eivät."

Toteamus osoittautui jokseenkin profeetalliseksi, sillä runsaassa vuodessa maat olivat jälleen sodassa keskenään.

The #uspostalservice receives approximately 30,000 suggestions annually for stamp ideas, however, only 25 to 30 topics are chosen. The Citizens’ Stamp Advisory Committee, made up of individuals having a strong background in history, science, technology, art, education, and sports, review the suggestions and make their recommendations to the Postmaster General. #womencryptologistsofwwii were chosen to commemorate with a stamp to honor their extraordinary work during WWII. These women are considered STEM pioneers, especially as their wartime effort coincided with the development of modern computer technology. The stamp art features an image from a World War II-era recruitment poster with an overlay of characters from the “Purple” code. Batterie von Crisbecq Bei der Batterie von Crisbecq handelt es sich um eine deutsche Geschützstellung aus Zeiten des Zweiten Weltkrieges. Man findet sie wenige Kilometer nordwestlich des Landungsabschnittes Utah Beach in Saint-Marcouf. Die Anlage ist etwa 4ha groß und bietet eine ausgezeichnete Sicht auf diverse Sektoren einer zu damaligen Zeiten möglichen Invasion. Bereits 1942 begann die Organisation Todt mit der Errichtung dieser Stellung. Während der Invasion der 4. US-Infanteriedivision zwischen dem 6. und 12. Juni 1944 war die Anlage noch im Bau und wurde mehrfach angegriffen. Trotz großer Verluste leisteten die Truppen unter Kommandant Oberstleutnant Walter Ohmsen erbitterten Widerstand, trotz dieser Bemühungen besetzten Amerikanische Truppen bereits am 8. Juni 1944 Teile der Batterie. Die Deutschen zogen sich daraufhin in die Bunker zurück und der Oberleutnant erbat von der nur wenige hundert Meter entfernten Batterie von Azeville Unterstützung indem diese doch die Besetzen Teile unter Beschuss nehmen sollte. Dies gelang und die amerikanischen Truppen zogen sich zurück. In der Nacht zum 12. Juni 1944 verließen schließlich die verbleibenden Deutschen Soldaten die Batterie. Von den 406 stationierten Soldaten überlebten 78 die Geschichte der Batterie von Crisbecq.
