The 105 days of battle of the Winter War ended on 13 March 1940 in a peace treaty signed in Moscow the previous night.
On most fronts, peace had come just in the nick of time. Now the heavy price of this peace was just starting to dawn on the exhausted Finnish population. Bitterness and resentment would remain.
One Soviet soldier asked a comrade with Finnish roots: ‘Tell me honestly, what kind of a character do the Finns possess? … They say the Finns are mean.’ His comrade replied: ‘They are not mean, they just really hold a grudge. They remember who has done them harm in the past. God forgives, the Finns do not.’
This statement would prove to be somewhat prophetic, as less that a year later the two nations would again find themselves at war.

Talvisodan 105 päivää kestäneet taistelut päättyivät 13.3.1940 edellisenä yönä Moskovassa solmittuun rauhansopimukseen.
Useimmilla rintamilla rauha tuli aivan viime tingassa. Nyt rauhan raskas hinta alkoi sarastaa uupuneissa suomalaisissa. Katkeruus ja kauna jäivät.
Eräs puna-armeijan sotilas kysyi suomalaisjuuria omaavalta toveriltaan: "Kerropa, millainen on suomalaisten luonne?… Sanotaan että suomalaiset ovat häijyjä." Toveri vastasi: "Eivät he ole häijyjä, he vain kantavat totisesti kaunaa. He muistavat, ketkä aiemmin ovat heitä rikkoneet. Jumala antaa anteeksi, suomalaiset eivät."
Toteamus osoittautui jokseenkin profeetalliseksi, sillä runsaassa vuodessa maat olivat jälleen sodassa keskenään.

The ATLANTIKWALL in Raversyde is one of the best-preserved remains of the German defensive line during the First World War. Thanks to its exceptional preservation, for decades the ATLANTIKWALL was carefully walled in and today it is the only intact original wall from the 1914-1918 world war that can be found in an urban environment.

Very unusual shots. The work of the Soviet, consider it a museum, anti-aircraft installation S-60 on the front line. The gun is capable of firing up to 70 rounds per minute. The range is about six kilometers, which allows you to work closely on infantry, while being at a decent distance.
The Schofield Truck Tank photographed during trials in New Zealand - Colorized
Colorized photograph of the Schofield pilot vehicle during trials in New Zealand.
Schofield developed a simple and rapid system whereby the vehicle could switch from wheels to tracks and back again and constructed a working prototype to demonstrate its capabilities. Unfortunately, difficulties in sourcing key parts and limited manufacturing capacity resulted in delays. Extensive tests revealed the need for modifications and the final version was not completed until late 1942. By this time events elsewhere had lessened the threat of invasion. Shipped to the UK for trials in 1943, it was quickly pushed to one side. Unwanted and neglected, it was scrapped in the UK before 1954.

This colorization is featured as the book cover for “The Schofield Truck Tank: New Zealand's famous wheel-cum-track armoured fighting vehicle” by Andrew Hills. What should be considered the best source of information for this vehicle, the text above is from this very book.

On 15th September 1940, the Luftwaffe launched the largest attack they ever had on London. The aim was to draw out the RAF into a battle of annihilation.
Up until this point, the RAF had been locked in a battle of 'non-attrition,' where the RAF sought to only inflict moderate losses against the Luftwaffe and to take few of their own. This way, by always putting up some resistance but refusing to engage in larger battles, the Luftwaffe felt they were getting nowhere.
And so 1,120 Luftwaffe aircraft (620 fighters, 500 bombers) met 630 RAF fighter aircraft in the skies above London. But there, 57-61 Luftwaffe aircraft fell, as opposed to only 29 British planes.
While these losses again seem only moderate they represented a large chunk of Axis air power. This is not to mention that all the German pilots were lost, as if they survived the crash or bailed out, they were still captured and interned for the rest of the war. British pilots could return straight to the front.
Both groups tried to overclaim the amount of aircraft they shot down. The Luftwaffe claimed 79 kills for under 40 losses, and the RAF claimed a staggering 185 German planes shot down.
As far as Air Chief Marshal Sir Keith Park was concerned, it was ridiculous to claim 200 aircraft downed. It was also not a cause for celebration as, despite the 2:1 ratio in favour of the RAF, this was proof that the RAF needed 'tightening up.' It was a good performance, but not the RAF's best.
Hitler was not overly concerned with the outcome - he believed from the end of August the Luftwaffe would not achieve aerial supremacy, and so postponed Operation Sealion indefinitely on 17th September. His plan now was to knock the USSR out of the war before they could even start it, neutralising the UK's last potential ally.
But for the British public, it was a cause for great celebration. The Luftwaffe had failed in its last attempt to gain full aerial superiority. For this reason, every 15th of September is celebrated as Battle of Britain day in the UK.

Colonel A. Pennanen, October 26, 1941.
Antti Pennanen (1903-1989) served as the commander of Detachment Pennanen in Petsamo during the Winter War. In the Continuation War, he was responsible for the same area as the commander of the so-called Men of Lutto of the Separate Detachment Petsamo (Er.Os.P). In the Lapland War, Pennanen and his men saved, among other things, the nationally important industrial facilities in Kemi.
After the wars, Pennanen served as the commander of the Lapland Border Guard and later as the chief of the Border Guards, rising to the rank of lieutenant general.

AMERICAN SOLDIERS IN CHERBOURG, NORMANDY 🇺🇸 ▪️American soldiers of the 79th Infantry Division observing discarded equipment left by German prisoners in the street of Cherbourg, Normandy. Cherbourg was one of the only deep water ports located in Normandy and it was very strategic to secure it as quickly as possible after the American forces landed on Utah-Beach. Located only 35 miles from Utah Beach, it took a long battle of 20 days to finally reach and secure the port. The 79th Infantry Division lost many brave men during these first few weeks of combat.
