Listen everyone has their own metric for what good writing is and isn’t but I’d be lying if I said it didn’t get me down a little to see one of my faves dragged through the mud by both haters and fans alike on a pretty much weekly basis

#yes this is about Salvatore #I don’t mean this to say you can’t dislike or hate his work because that’s valid too #I just mean that he’s become one of those writers where it’s okay and trendy to shit on him and he’s popular enough that it’s excused #I feel like there’s a lot of irl fans who crap on him because they inherently don’t like the over-the-top rule-of-cool style that is FR #and it’s okay to not be into that side of fantasy #but you aren’t the superior reader because you love GRRM-esque super serious grim dark content #also I haven’t personally met a long running series where I loved every single book or plot point #it’s pretty normal when you look at a 40 book series to find that some arcs/books are a bit better than others #and I feel like people jump on certain books and take it as ‘see? any talent he ever had has gone down the drain’ #like my dude it’s okay if you didn’t love a few of the books just skip and move on #add to that he’s a prolific writer in general and I’m sure some books got more time and effort from him than others #it’s fine and normal and not a sign that he’s the worse ever ffs #also there’s a part of me that doesn’t like comparing authors working in shared worlds to authors writing totally independently #because some plot points are set by the publisher before pen ever hits the paper #and again you don’t have to think Salvatore or anyone is a good writer #but I always factor it in when I see plots that seem to come out of nowhere and the like #anyways that’s my rant lmao #constructive criticism of any writer is fine and I’m not knocking that before anyone gets their knickers twisted

I am having some RE8 DLC thoughts - with a big shout-out to my buddy @danstillcreates who I dragged into this topic with me, which lead to both of us coming up with this together over the course of almost a full hour during a voice call.

(spoiler warning for RE8 + DLC)

Dan & I have both witnessed the DLC in full & agree that it simply feels Empty. That being said, there were concepts that could've been easily built upon & lead to a full spinoff/sequel game with more depth and meaning.

The fact that the Megamycete is housing the memories of anyone who died near it & yet we did not see any memories linked to the Lords is astonishing. We don't even see shadows or hints of them anywhere.

With a game that tries to focus so much on memories & mixed consciousness they could & should've gone so much more weird & deeper with it.

Take this as an opportunity to explore the past of the Lords & how they each ended up with Miranda. Have Rose, who doesn't understand anything about her powers learn from interacting with the consciousness & memories of people who have powers of their own from the same source.

Have it not be black and white, as some of them see their powers as a gift & rebirth, while others resent what it did to them - so Rose still remains with her struggle of not knowing if she should keep her powers or not.

Have Lady D connect to Rose through her need to be loved, let Donna connect with Rose through memories of grief, allow Moreau to speak clearly in his mind & voice his anger & hurt freely... and let Heisenberg connect to Rose through sadly a painfully similar childhood.

Let the Lords each give Rose their jars - both as making her more powerful to be able to fight Miranda & also as an honest apology for what they had all done to her (and Ethan) during the happenings of RE8.

Goddammit- Have Miranda get held back by the Lords & be dragged back down into the subconscious of the Megamycete during the boss battle!! Away from Rose and Ethan!

But most importantly... let Duke be the one who is the one who starts all this. Let him give Rose the choice to find herself & the answers she wants in the Megamycete. Let him be truthful in promising her that if she "loses", she will return safely to the real world with him.

Let Rose have her own little save-room moments with Duke that way. Let Duke tell her more about her Dad while Duke cooks for her to replenish her (mental) health.

All in all... the DLC had so much potential (which probably got stomped into the ground by higher-ups, let's be honest) & now my buddy Dan & I are thinking about everything that could've been.

hi writeblr! i’ve been kicking around on here for the hottest of minutes, but this is the first time i’ve decided to start actively posting about my writing. (this is a sideblog; you can find my main @thespacelizard, and i follow from there)

about me!

I go by Space, my pronouns are they/he, and I’m staring down the barrel of 30 with grim determination. My current pseudonyms are A.L. Thorne (for my fantasy writing), and A.L. Dusk (for my queer erotica)

Aside from being a writer I’m also an artist and a Forever DM, and I love to come up with wild characters for my campaign and then complain that I have to draw them because there is no picrew in existence that can make them.

I write a lot of fanfiction, and I post about my current ongoing series on my main blog. I intend to keep my fic writing there, and my original writing here, but if you’re interested in an m/m erotic romance featuring d/s dynamics and drow wizards engaged in deeply frustrating mutual pining, the tag over there is obedience fic blogging and the series is on AO3 here

I otherwise write fantasy novels, because I am, at heart, a Weird Dragon Kid. I also like to, of late, make them queer as hell, because I too am queer as hell, and I want to write about queer characters having all the adventures I usually read straight cis characters having.

I am a big fan of playing in the traditional fantasy tropes aisle, and whilst I do love unique fantasy worlds, there’s something about a classic set of wizards and dragons that just makes my heart happy.

My writing style is fairly lighthearted but the heart still beats quite sincerely. You’ll find fantastical places, characters who all have something Fundamentally Wrong With Them, and more one-liners than strictly necessary.

Chronicles of Valloroth

This is the main (read: only) thing I’m working on at present, and it exists because I read too many Drizzt books over lockdown, got brainworms, and then decided to write my own take.

The series features: knock-off tieflings, a grumpy assassin and a sparkly mercenary in a rivals-to-lovers arc, knock-off dragonborn, found family, gods with very mortal foibles, A Whole Entire Dragon, magical mishaps, and an entire cast of queer disasters.

not everyone in this book is trans, but there is So Much Gender in here. it’s not a trans book, but it has trans bones, and not just because I, A Trans, am writing it.

It’s basically ‘what if The Legend of Drizzt but Gay and Also Trans? what then?’

I'll be posting a wip intro for the first book soon!

My current goal is re-drafting the first book, and getting all my outlining and zero drafts finished for books two and three. I write a lot, and I write quite fast, but good god there are so many words to get down. Just. An absolutely ridiculous amount of words.

I intend to post about my writing progress, my characters, my worldbuilding; lots of things to help keep me motivated and to (hopefully) drag other people into Caring Too Much About These Blorbos Hell with me.

Hey, it worked for Obedience and now at least three other people are yelling at those drow boys with me. trust me. yelling at my characters is a fun hobby we can all share together.
