Sakura (Cherry Blossoms):
Tumblr media
The cherry blossom (sakura) is Japan's unofficial national flower. It has been revered for generations and plays an important role in Japanese culture. Japan has hundreds of cherry tree kinds, the majority of which blossom for only a few days each spring. Hanami (cherry blossom watching) gatherings are held under the trees to appreciate the seasonal sight.
youtube
Japan has more than a hundred different cherry tree kinds. A few of them are wild species native to Japan's woods, such as the Yamazakura, but the vast majority have been grown by humans over centuries for decorative purposes in gardens and parks. The most common cherry tree variety nowadays is the very lovely, manicured Somei Yoshino.
There are various traits that distinguish the many cherry tree kinds. Some of the obvious ones, which may also be easily recognised by beginners, are as follows:
Number of petals:
Most wild trees, but also a lot of cultivated tree varieties, have blossoms with five petals. However, some species have blossoms which consist of ten, twenty or more petals. Trees with blossoms of more than five petals are called yaezakura.
Tumblr media
Colour of the blossoms
Most varieties produce light pink to white blossoms, but there are also cherry trees with dark pink, yellow or green blossoms. Furthermore, the colour of some varieties' cherry blossoms may change while they are in bloom. For example, a blossom may open as a white flower and change colour to pink over the course of a few days.
Tumblr media
youtube
The fresh leaves
In the case of early blooming trees, the fresh leaves usually do not appear until after full bloom, which gives the trees an attractive, homogeneous look while they are in full bloom. In case of later blooming trees, the leaves usually appear before the blossoms, giving the trees a more heterogeneous look. Furthermore, the colour of the fresh leaves differs between the varieties. In most cases, the fresh leaves are green, coppery brown, or something in between.
Form of the tree
Cherry trees display various growing habits and come in different shapes and forms: triangular, columnar, V-shape, weeping, flat-topped, etc. Weeping cherry trees are called shidarezakura.
Tumblr media
Time of blooming
Most cherry tree varieties carry blossoms in spring. Yaezakura, i.e. cherry trees with blossoms of more than five petals, are typically the last ones to open their blossoms, about two to four weeks after most five-petaled species. Some extreme varieties bloom in late autumn and during the winter months.

Cherry Blossoms...
Cherry Blossoms are some of the most beautiful flowers, coming in bright colors. The Cherry Blossom tree in full bloom, during the arrival of spring, is one of the most beautiful sights to behold.
Tumblr media
The Cherry Blossom is so popular that festivals are celebrated in its honor- the Cherry Blossom Festival, celebrated in the months of March and April.
The Cherry Blossom is Japan's unofficial National Flower. Somei Yoshino is a favorite Cherry Blossom variety of the Japanese. The flowers are almost pure white, tinged with the palest pink, especially near the stem.
The Somei Yoshino Cherry Blossoms bloom, and usually fall within a week, before the leaves come out. The trees, thus look nearly white from top to bottom. Other Cherry Blossom varieties include yamazakura, yaezakura, and shidarezakura. The yaezakura Cherry Blossom have large flowers, thick with rich pink petals.
The shidarezakura Cherry Blossom, or weeping Cherry, has branches that fall like those of a weeping willow, bearing cascades of pink flowers.
The Japanese Cherry starts flowering profusely from the first warmer days in April, heralding the coming of spring. The pink or white flowers grow in racemose clusters at nodes on short spurs. They are past flowering early in May.

my cat is sick (but thankfully improving), the roof has a leak (that thankfully managed to miss dripping onto my computer tower by two inches), but three of my four ornamental cherries are shaping up to bloom nicely this year.
sadly the yoshino only got one bloom on it, but it looks like it’s putting on height at least (which is good since it was kind of stunted looking when I got it), but the weeping higan’s blossoms started opening today and the two kanzans are popping out buds aplenty.

[25/200] Yamato-Koriyama Castle (2021-03-20) The time is ripe for more Castle visits! With the Seishun 18 ticket in hand, the next area to conquer is the Mie Prefecture. Along the way though, there was still one castle park awaiting my visit here in what was known as the Koriyama Domain. While the usual Somei-yoshino cherry blossoms still needed a few days to fully bloom, the Shidarezakura (weeping cherry) was more than ready to give my photos a vibrant color. The castle park, located directly next to some railways, had an amazing atmosphere. There are even school grounds within the castle walls, which I think is an amazing solution to refurbish these ruins. The highlight of this castle is that you can directly see how stone from the vicinity was used to build up the walls. You can find an upside-down Jizo statue, as well as large gravestone parts in the middle of the wall. I guess sacrifices had to be made. Within the walls also lies the former City Hall and Library of Nara. However, throughout years of decay, they moved the city hall more towards the center of Nara city, and temporarily repurposed the building as a classroom for truant students. Turns out I had great timing going to this castle, as the red bridge shown in the pictures finished construction one week before I got here!

Backyard Transformation
Spring arrived quickly this year. It came around so fast that and I quickly realized that my backyard wasn’t ready for it. I decided it was time to focus my time and intention to sprucing up the backyard. I put so much work into the inside of the house that I forgot the back!
We began with replacing all the pine straw with black mulch. We bought the mulch for about $2 a bag at Walmart. We were excited about this, because in the long run we ended up buying about 40 bags to completely replace all the pine straw. After the mulch we went CRAZY buying plants. It quickly got out of control but there is just so many beautiful plants out there! We had no idea! We bought a couple hundred dollars worth of plants and 5 trees: one Weeping Willow, 3 apples trees, 1 Cherry Yoshino tree.
We were definitely done with gardening at that point and decided to focus on the actual patio. I found this great couch at Goodwill and DIYed into an outdoor couch. I will make a separate post for the Goodwill DIY. I found an affordable and adorable outdoor rug and decor pillows at Walmart. We also bought a couple sets of string lights and an affordable propane tank fire pit on Amazon. My vision was coming to fruition plus we had just done the DIY on the toy box in my previous post. Check out the final result! It’s perfectly cozy and ready for some outdoor lounging

On October 28 I took a trip to Harvard’s Arnold Arboretum in Roxbury, in the south of Boston on an absolutely dismal day to look at some attractive ornamental trees.
This weeping tree is a Prunus x yedoensis, or Yoshino Cherry. On the dreary day at the Arboretum, I was drawn to it due to its melancholy, weeping form. On closer inspection, the vast majority of its yellow leaves are scattered around the ground at the tree’s base. The few remaining leaves are a beautiful mixed green and yellow hue. The bark is scaly and cracked. This tree, originally from Japan, is a cross. The specific epithet yedoensis refers to Yedo, now Tokyo.
The tree can grow in USDA hardiness zones from 5 to 8, and is one of the most prominent cherry trees planted in Washington DC. It can tolerate full sun to partial shade (though best in full sun). It grows well in average, medium moisture, well-drained soil. It can tolerate heat and humidity, but not drought. From March to April, it blooms with white, pink-tinged flowers.
The tree is susceptible to a large number of insects and diseases such as leaf spot, die back, leaf curl, aphids, and Japanese beetles. In ornamental use, it is used for its flowers along decks and patios.

We must avoid nonessential outings and stay home as much as possible to contain the spread of COVID-19. That's too bad if you canceled your trip to cherry blossom viewing in Japan. Please enjoy the video and photos.🌸🌸🌸 There are a lot of types of cherry blossom trees in Japan. double cherry blossoms, Weeping cherry ,Somei Yoshino is the most common, while Kawazu sakura bloom earlier. The timing of the full bloom depends on the variety of cherry blossom. Ninna-ji temple UNESCO World Heritage Site is especially famous for its Omuro Sakura🌸 trees which are the latest blooming cherries in the whole of Kyoto. It is a special cherry tree that can only be seen at Ninna-ji and the trees with comparatively short trunks which is considered one of the top 100 cherry blossom sites in Japan🇯🇵. It possible to enjoy their very beautiful blossoms at eye level. My favorite flower❤😀. I hope this coronavirus thing to go away.I'm praying for your health. #sakura #cherryblossom #hanami #kyoto #ninnaji#japan #japanesecastle #🌸 (Ninna-Ji 仁和寺 Ninna-Ji) https://www.instagram.com/p/B-4KXOBAWXm/?igshid=demvmc9i0ivk

The cherry blossom festival in Japan, typically witnessed around late March or early April, marks the onset of spring and paints the landscape in exquisite tones. Plan your Japan vacation to coincide with this festival for a truly unique experience.
This is the time when cherry blossoms – called “sakura” in Japanese – make for a charming sight with their fleeting presence in various parts of the country. White or pale pink, sometimes dark pink or yellow, and sometimes changing color as the blooming period progresses, they symbolize the delicate and ephemeral nature of life and attract locals and tourists alike. It’s no wonder then that there’s a word called “hanami” in the Japanese lexicon. It refers to “cherry blossom viewing” or the centuries-old practice of enjoying a picnic or party under a cherry tree in bloom. In some places, you can even enjoy a late-night hanami picnic with pretty paper lanterns to heighten the ambiance.
The cherry blossom in Japan – A myriad varieties
While the blooming period can last up to 14 days, there are some varieties that are in peak bloom for just a couple of days.
Japan has a special connect with the cherry blossom, to the extent that some would even call it the country’s national flower. It is home to over a hundred varieties of cherry trees, including wild varieties and cultivated ones.
The trees are also differentiated in terms of the number of petals, the color of the petals, the shape of the tree, the color of the leaves, and whether the leaves arrive along with the blossoms or after the blooming period. Trees with blossoms of more than five petals are called yaezakura. Weeping cherry trees – the ones with drooping branches – are called shidarezakura. The Somei Yoshino with five-petal blossoms of white or pale pink color is among the most commonly found cherry trees in Japan. The Ukon variety is known for its pale yellow blossoms. While the blooming period can last up to 14 days, there are some varieties that are in peak bloom for just a couple of days. A great way to enjoy the beauty of the cherry blossom in Japan is to observe how it keeps changing as the days pass by.
The cherry blossom festival 2019
The arrival of cherry blossoms in Japan varies slightly each year depending on weather conditions. As per some forecasts made in February this year, the cherry blossom season in 2019 is expected to arrive earlier than usual. Aided by a warmer climate, the flowers are estimated to bloom on March 20 in Tokyo and on March 23 in Kyoto. However, accurate estimates of cherry blossom dates are available only by early March.

The best hanami spots here include Shinjuku Gyoen, Ueno Park and Chidorigafuchi. While Chidorigafuchi doesn’t allow for picnics, you can always rent a boat and go around the moat of Edo Castle to view the blossoms; this place also looks great at night when the trees are lit up with lanterns.
Sensoji Temple in Tokyo
While in Tokyo, you could stay at the Mandarin Oriental, a luxurious hotel set inside the Nihonbashi Mitsui Tower. You could also consider the Imperial Hotel which is at walking distance from the city’s famous Imperial Palace.

A city known for its gourmet street food and the Osaka Castle among other things, this is a fantastic destination for cherry blossom viewing. Among the favored hanami spots here is the Kama Sakuranomiya Park, with its vast lawn for picnics and cherry trees set along the Okawa Riverside. Early Spring
Around the Japanese Hill and Pond Garden the first Cherry Blossoms are blooming. “The Prunus × yedoensis: The single pink blossoms become white with age on Yoshino cherries—considered to be the most widely cultivated cherry in Japan, particularly around Tokyo and the Prunus subhirtella ‘Pendula’: Seeds of this variety, often called weeping higan cherry, were first brought from Japan around 1862 by plant hunter Philipp Franz von Siebold. They produce delicate blossoms in colors ranging from nearly white to pale pink.” Source Brooklyn Botanic Garden website. It’s nice to have the Sun finally coming out and warmer yet cool weather.
