I have no idea where to say this or air these complicated emotions.

I've been a Sonic fan since I was two years old. I've been interacting with the fandom since I was thirteen. I'm now nearly thirty and my love for this series has not changed. It ebs and flows with the tide of ADHD fixations and ere I return to find the fandom ever more worse for wear upon each return.

I see nonsensical behavior from newer fans gatekeeping and bullying long time fans simply because we are a minority and thus our voices overshadowed and drowned by numerous verbose essays detailing how wrong our opinions are. It's to be expected in a series that targets younger audiences that many of the older fans move on at some point, with their being a Sonic fan as a footnote in their childhood. However some of us stay because we love this franchise and put so much of our heart and soul into it that to leave it entirely is unthinkable.

As such, because we've put so much blood sweat and tears into this place, it feels that much worse when a new fan comes in, often with no experience, perspective or knowledge of history, and proceeds to mop up all the blood and sweat before beginning to yell how wrong things are according to their opinions right this instant.

You don't ship x with y? Screw you you're wrong they were meant to be together since the dawn of time and you're dumb for not seeing it until now. You like those dead comics? HAHAHA! Omg these are so bad lol look at this one art panel or this one out of context line can you believe they thought this was good? You don't like how this character is portrayed? Well here is a long thread detailing every minor interaction that proves your opinion is wrong and that they were always portrayed like this and you're such an idiot for being blind to this.

It's sad to see older fans treated this way. Many leave, not because they love Sonic less, but because they are being treated so poorly as to begin causing depression and anxiety when interacting with the series they love. Their thoughts, opinions and desires suffocated by the sea of new blood that just got here and are impossibly loud because they haven't learned the lessons we already have.

All I ask is that everyone stops hating everything so vitriolically, keep an open mind and try to understand why someone loves something. You don't have to agree. You don't have to like it also. But for the love of everything please keep things respectful. I am saddened and tired of watching long time friends disappear off their accounts because of this treatment. One day you will be the old timer and I hope beyond all hope that you don't get what you have given.
