💎 Old Photographs & Times I'll Remember by @jaerie (E, 54k)

Carefully he set that negative down and lifted the paper to see there was another beneath. This one again was a young man, this time posed against an antique car. He lifted a few more negatives out one by one, each a portrait of the same man with various backdrops. The man in a meadow, in an office, leaning against a doorframe — even one in his underwear grinning at the camera. On the edge of each negative printed in slanted, handwritten characters were the initials and date. H.S. 1924.

He quickly but carefully packed them back into the box and buzzed with excitement. He couldn’t wait to develop them to see exactly what had been captured in the images. It was a find that felt like a puzzle to piece together.

H.S. was likely the man in the photographs as well as the owner of the suitcase. Who was he? Why had his suitcase found its way into Niall’s attic? Was he still alive and well somewhere in the world?

A camera, a suitcase, and a relationship forged through time.

Or, Harry and Louis kind of secretly sort of dated in high school. Now it's two years later and they're both back in town for Christmas and it's awkward. Until it isn't.

Some (varying degress of) angst for those of you who like that kind of thing:

(Part One)

1. Indestructible (whoknows) - “Hi,” Harry murmurs, and Louis hiccups out a sob.

“Hi,” he manages, still clutching onto Harry’s shoulders. Harry’s fingers drift across Louis’ cheeks, and there’s something off about Harry’s expression, but Louis can’t figure out what it is.

“I’m okay,” Harry says, and Louis is going to say something to that, even if he doesn’t know what, except Harry’s kissing him.

Louis freezes.

2. Take My Hand (And My Heart And Soul) (bananasandboots) - Harry hasn’t spoken to his best friend in sixteen months and can’t remember why.

3. Jump Before We Fall (green_feelings) - Louis and Zayn’s lives revolve around running a hotel by the sea, Harry is a student who wants a life far from home for just a little while, Niall doesn’t know where life leads him and Liam thinks he has already found all purposes in his life.

4. The Things I’d Do To Wake Up Next To You (dirtymattress) - Harry wakes up to a pregnant Louis Tomlinson and a wedding band on his finger.

5. Wear It Like A Crown (zarah5) - As part of a team of fixers hired to handle a gay scandal in Buckingham Palace, Louis expects Prince Harry to be a lot of things—most notably a royally spoilt brat. Never mind that the very same Prince Harry used to star in quite a number of Louis’ teenage fantasies.

6. I Love You More (shoulderbone (lavenderforluck)) - Boys like Harry can’t fall in love. But then he meets Louis.

7. Learning To Breathe (youcomecrash) - He’s playing football at one of the top universities in England and he should love everything about his life right now, but instead he’s moving backwards. How does your past fit into your present? Louis is still figuring it out.

8. With Love Comes Strange Currencies (mediaville) - or, They’re Accidentally Mated and Dealing With It Rather Badly.

9. All Tired Talk (ourloveisgod) - In which Harry is the dying front man of a dying rock band, Zayn has finally given up holding his hair back in dingy bathrooms, Niall and Liam are holding up the fort, and Louis comes along with eyes the color of the sky to remind Harry that there is still more life to live.

10. All The Lights Are Full Of Colour (infinitelymint) - Harry and Louis are separated, but for the sake of their two sons, they choose to spend Christmas together. It may just lead to a Christmas miracle.

11. Empty Skies (green_feelings) - For three years, Harry has been running from his past. Now, he is moving to London and pledges to fulfil his only dream – making it big in the music industry. Not everyone has a place, though, and the competition is tough. As is his past catching up on him.

Louis is part of the biggest boy band of the world, and getting there had meant a lot of hard work, as well as sacrificing parts of his heart and soul. He’s still happy. Maybe not as happy as he could be, but who is he to complain?

12. Truth Be Told (I Never Was Yours) (justfortommo) - Louis and Harry have a complicated past, Louis is getting married to someone that’s not Harry, and the universe has decided to have a laugh and make Harry the wedding planner.

The first thing Louis does is take him under his wing. From there it’s nine months of slow-burning romance, the past catching up to them, turning into the human puppy pile that is OT5 and a lot of feelings until, of course, reaching the finish line.

Louis is the only omega to ever make it in the cut-throat world of competitive motorcycle racing—that is, he would be if anyone actually knew about his identity. Louis didn't care. Or, when Louis' favourite singer comes back and announces he's performing again, him and the rest of his group chat decide to go. When Haz, the man Louis' fallen in love with without meeting him, says that he can't, Louis tries his best to convince him with a drunken phone call, hearing his voice for the first time. It's not until he's at Royal Variety that he swears he can hear it again.

teenage dreams in a teenage circus by orphan_account (E, 51K) I read this one ages ago, so my memory of why I liked it is vague. But I’m always here for the “my best friend’s brother suddenly got really hot” trope.

Snips & Snails by aimmyarrowshigh (M, 2K) A beautiful little bit of prose poetry that’s both tender and heart wrenching at the same time.

for neither never nor ever by fairytalelights / @lookslikefairytale (E, 29K) This is based on a TV show I’ve never seen, but it is such a unique and layered time travel story. I was captivated by the twists and turns. Yes, it’s ultimate a love story, but it’s so much more as well.

Atlas At Last by louisandthealien (M, 83K) I swear I would read this author’s grocery list. I just love everything they write. This one is a 1970s coming of age road trip fic. I really enjoyed the OT5 friendships, excellent dialogue, and Harry and Louis discovering themselves and each other.

Anonymous Said by @alivingfire (T, 21K) I read this one ages ago and don’t have great notes on it, but this author always delivers. I do remember it being a beautifully written coming of age story full of self-discovery and online friendships.

Learning to Breathe by youcomecrash (E, 111K) Uni football player Harry and Louis. I read this a long time ago and I’m afraid my notes only say “ good angst, good first time smut” 🙈Past me is not very helpful.

Dream Awake by protagonist_m (M, 31K) beautifully written, this one pulled me in and I got lost in the story so deeply. It’s one of those fics that really deserved a wider audience. Link is to a download.
