I've been really curious about this, who are your top ten Yu-Gi-Oh characters?
Tumblr media
Hello! 🌷 Usually, I only have a few favorites. So, aside from the first three, the rest is constantly changing. I'll try to put them in order (all under the cut).
♡. 10 ── Carly Nagisa (5Ds)
What's not to love about her? She's funny, pretty, and a complete mess of a person. She gets in all sorts of trouble, all because she's trying to make a living. I like it when she gets screen time.
♡. 9 ── Noa Kaiba (DM)
He was my favorite as a kid, so I still have a special place in my heart for him. His story made me cry. He did not deserve that. He only wanted others to understand him. You're valid, Noa.
♡. 8 ── Yusei Fudo (5Ds)
It's rare for me to favor a protagonist. That's how you know he's good. This man is a blessing to Yugioh. He has a natural charisma that's impossible to ignore. He's perfect.
♡. 7 ── Bandit Keith (DM)
...I think. I have mixed feelings toward him. I don't even know why he's on this list. I keep going to him in games where Kotsuzuka is not there. So, that must mean I like him, right? I'm confused.
Cross Duel showed me he can be really nice to you if you help him win. I appreciate how he helps other duelists fortify their decks, using the themes they originally had instead of giving them a completely new deck. He cares.
While there's no excuse for what he did to Kotsuzuka and the boys, the fact that, behind that 'bad guy' front, there's a sad, broken man makes me feel bad for him. He deserves to heal.
♡. 6 ── Ryou Bakura (DM)
The anime doesn't do him justice. The more I learn about him through other fans and Duel Links, the more I like him. He's a precious cream puff who likes spooky stuff and is treated terribly by almost everyone. He deserves better (friends).
♡. 5 ── Divine (5Ds)
This man is terrible in every way, and that's the point. I hate that his character was designed to be hated. He gets no backstory, no redemption arc, no nothing. I pity him. He's the worst. I love this guy.
♡. 4 ── Thief King Bakura (DM)
PLEASE give this guy a break. He has gone through enough.
♡. 3 ── Kiyoshi Takaido & Satake (DM)
They share third place because I can't have one without the other. I automatically started loving them because they're close friends with Kotsuzuka. I like that they care about him. These guys have so much potential to explore, and it's a shame we see so little of them.
They're not 'Keith's lackeys'. They're duelists in their own right. They have ambitions and aspirations. They just didn't get to be in the spotlight.
♡. 2 ── Yami Bakura (DM)
Sometimes switches places with Takaido and Satake but usually stays in second place. He's wickedly perfect. From his gorgeous design to how he pretends everything is part of his plan, even though he's literally dissipating into nothingness. And he has the nerve to make empty threats that he never carries out. And I love him for that.
There's something beautiful about this ancient evil spirit dedicating his existence to fulfill his objective - all while showing us that he can enjoy normal human activities, like playing games. The complexity of his character captivates me. You can study him for hours, and it will still take you a while to figure him out due to his confusing lore.
The way he makes others suffer causes me to have mixed feelings. Sure, I love angst. I just wish there were some feelings involved.
Seeing him make enemies with almost everyone he crosses paths with makes me think he wants to keep everyone away, and that's sad. I want him to care about someone other than himself. I want someone to care about him.
♡. 1 ── Ghost Kotsuzuka (DM)
Yes, that one guy who's known for using Zombie-Type monsters. That short, spooky 15-year-old who walks around hunched over pretending to be a ghost, not realizing he's too cute to be scary. That naive boy who trusted the wrong person and then was unlucky enough to cross paths with the main antagonist. He's my favorite.
I love him. The way his eyes light up when he talks about the things he likes is adorable. I could listen to him gush about ghosts for hours.
His character tends to be frustratingly misinterpreted and overlooked. It's sad that some people think of him as nothing more than collateral damage to Yami Bakura's 'mischief'. He deserves better than that.
When you see past his 'side antagonist' role, you realize he's a precious little guy who's trying his best. Behind that ghostly, mischievous smile, there's a lost youth looking for guidance from a 'big bro' figure he can look up to, whether he realizes this or not.
Despite the differences in his characterization between the manga, anime, and games, one thing remains consistent. He grows into someone who wants to prove he can duel by himself.
But what does he get? Nothing but pain. Betrayed, deceived, ending up dead or lost in the darkness, condemned in almost every canon, with only his sentient Duel Links data to remember him by.
He only wanted to duel.
---------------------ꕥ
I'll stop here. Otherwise, I'll be talking about Kotsuzuka for hours. Thank you so much for the ask! ♡ Sorry that it took a while. I was struggling to organize what I wanted to say for some of the characters, and I wanted to add some art :3
Keep in mind that I've only seen Duel Monsters and the first half of 5Ds, so there are many characters I don't know yet.

queen of faithshipping content, i need your 2cents, do you think that babies kissed off-screen in the finale? 🥹
Ok first of all "queen of faithshipping content" is a title I don't think I deserve (yet) but I'll happily take it ^^"
That said. Do u know what u have just unleashed. Listen. Listen.
Obviously they kissed off-screen. Like, I get it, the writers were cowards about the whole thing because it's a strictly genre-defined shonen show aimed at twelve year-old boys, yadda, yadda, but for the love of all that's holy.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Their faces are reflected in each other's fucking eyes. They must be standing so close together I can't.
Tumblr media
AND THEN AKI CLOSES HER GODDAMN EYES. WHAT THE FUCK WOULD SHE BE CLOSING HER EYES FOR IF NOT FOR A KISS. You cannot make this shit up.
Tumblr media
^ Extremely intimate way to hold hands.
Like. Look. Look. I'm not mandating that everyone needs to ship these two. People have their Yusei ships, people have their Aki ships, live and let live, I occasionally enjoy content shipping these two with other people too. It's literally fine. BUT. As far as the actual show is concerned for me, they are canon. At least as canon as toolshipping, roseknightshipping, treasonshipping, firebirdshipping or what have you, at any rate. And unless the actual, real-life team who wrote, storyboarded, animated, directed, and voice acted the scene above literally comes out of the woodwork to tell me otherwise, it's always going to be a kiss to me. Case closed.
So, did they kiss? Short answer: Yes.
Long answer:

Something something highsidershipping something something who was the one person Primo wanted to destroy? Yusei.
Who did Primo spend an entire duel trying to kill? Yusei
Who did Primo keep trash talking and degrading? Yusei
Who was concerned about Primo and ran to check on him when he fell and was torn apart? Yusei
It just makes me feral that the one (and probably only) person who showed Primo a single shred of concern was the very same guy he was actively trying to kill, and just thinking about what Primo must have thought then. How he must have felt, seeing that the person he taunted and hunted turned to him to help. When Iliaster didn't show a single shred of emotion to his state, and yet his "enemy" openly worried. About him.
Like he was worth something.

duel celebrity autographs: 5ds edition (based on the duel monsters version by @kaibacorpintern)
yusei fudo: a scrawled out messy "yusei fudo" that makes it clear he taught himself how to write. attempts to write a nice thing, usually winds up being "believe in you cards". he does not intend to write this so often. if asked by a little kid, he will kneel down to their eye level and awkwardly try his autistic best to make eye contact. encourages them to go to school, tells them that he hopes to see them on the dueling pitch one day. for adults, he does not bother to attempt to make eye contact at all, but is cordial and polite. does not understand why people want his autograph at all, but does not ask questions as he doesn't want people to think he doesn't understand social cues (he doesn't).
aki izayoi: is shocked to have been asked at all, and often comes across as rude as a result. asks them why they bothered to ask for her autograph when yusei is over there, suggesting she can bring them over. when insisted they want her autograph and not yusei or jacks, she often has a very long conversation with them about the game and her deck. always winds up saying yes. leaves a nice message that is usually "thank you for talking with me" with a swooping, cursive signature that is always carefully done. insists that they talk with her any time. most people leave with a better impression of her than before.
jack atlas: loudly says yes to everyone who asks. has a stack of photographs to sign. has media training, but uses none of it. will seem arrogant at times. when kids ask for an autograph, he always acts like they are his competition and calls them his biggest rival to their delight. will tell them that they better not disappoint him when they finally make their way to the dueling pitch, to which most tell him that they'll kick his ass. when adults ask, it is often a pre signed headshot.
crow hogan: always says "sure, long as you're not a cop" and then asks if they're a cop seriously again. if they're a cop, he'd point to his marks and ask them why they weren't asking for his autograph back when they were putting these on his face and challenges them to a duel on the spot. however, if they are not a cop, he laughs and tells em to watch out for cops. he will gesture to his face and be like "if you don't, you'll wind up lookin like me!" when a kid asks, he tells them sure as long as they promise to not become cops and stay in school. has tried to adopt a child more than once. has an extremely messy signature of "crow the bullet!" that is barely legible, and draws a little bird holding a gun next to his signature in case they can't read it. has been yelled at a parent over this drawing before, and responded "what are you, a cop?"
lua/rua/leo 5ds: is always eager to sign something. will ask if you want his autograph before you can even ask him for it. brags about how he knows jack and yusei, and always expects the person to be impressed. if they are not, he'll ask how they can't know who yusei or jack is, citing them as legends and the reason he got into competitive play at all. will talk your ear off about the game unprompted. his signature is a perfect signature that he came up with when he was twelve, and it has not changed since. he often adds little stars around his name. eager to prove himself and will list off all the duels he's won.
luka/ruka/luna 5ds: confused why you want her signature as she was only in one tournament when she was twelve. admits she doesn't duel that much anymore, and suggests that you probably must have mistaken her for her brother. offers to take you to him and begins to lead you to him unprompted. manages to evade signing anything without you even realizing it until you're back home, but you still wind up with lua's signature somehow.
sherry leblanc: is almost always rude and impatient about it when it comes to grown adults. may hand a headshot with a smeared signature depending on how much she dislikes you. if you really piss her off, she suggests a duel there and then specifically to humiliate you. with kids, she tries a little harder. a little kid could hand her mushroom man and she'll fake a smile and sign it while talking shit about the card to her bodyguard in french. often times will walk off in the middle of conversation with an adult, but has never once walked off from a little kid.
misty lola: unlike some people, she actually listened to her media training. will smile and make eye contact the entire time, and is surprisingly quiet and vaguely off putting. she has a neat, well practiced signature and is often willing to sign whatever you hand her way. takes her time with each person who asks her to sign something despite her discomfort. walks off soon after, desperate to get away from the attention.
bruno 5ds: depends on which version you get. future bruno is definitely a cocky asshole about it, and always winds up saying something to the effect of "course ya do!" despite his braggadocio nature about it, he's very similar to the bruno team 5ds meets in that he's at least nice about it. he'll talk with most people. the only real difference is future bruno will straight up leave if you make him uncomfortable, while past bruno you could pour soup in his lap and he'll apologize to you.

blorbo bingo vol. 1, titled “oh you bet i have a shitload of stuff to say about my girl aki”
Tumblr media
i don’t think things around the lost in-canon potential part need to be discussed? i haven’t even finished 5ds but it’s already plain that the writers treat aki as background decoration most of the time. she started off really cool in the initial episodes and flopped just as hard after the dark signer arc (her character wasn’t even given a proper ending in there either, with the whole misty/divine/arcadia threads left hanging to god-knows-what-end)
she’s technically not a war criminal, however- i really like this ambiguity side about aki, her backstory with the arcadia movement and attachment to divine. i know the show made it so that she was kept unaware of what divine &co were actually cooking… which is kind of a shame, but would require levels of character unhinged-ness that i know i can’t expect from a love interest in yugioh. anyway. aki’s powers get pretty ominous at times and i’m totally in for it during her introductory episodes. she still hasn’t done anything wrong though, hope you get me
she needs fixing so bad, the amount of (albeit unexplored) trauma that, once again, divine &co along with aki’s self-control struggles linked with her powers and family that failed to step up and lack of other healthy support (no, not you, divine) and emotional distress and the self-hate, spite and even identity issues (aki vs black rose witch identities separated by the mask) all this must have caused are, well, a lot of handle. fortunately i don’t have to do the fixing because yusei is right there!
i haven’t colored the “i can make her worse” box because i really don’t intend to do so, but sometimes i think real hard of writing her a piece that would do proper justice to all the mental strain, traumatic experiences and consequences thereof that were kind of conveniently disposed of in the canon
i’m so so normal about her in case you haven’t noticed yet:))))))

sorry if this is a dumb question, but what was the problem with keito calling him “nacchan”? is it because they’re filming? what does keito usually call him? (from what i know, fanta is more chill about honorifics among the members? sorry i’m new here 😭)
not a dumb question at all!!! japanese formal language can be very confusing!!
(disclaimer: i will say first that my japanese is not very good and i'm also not very familiar with other LDH groups so anyone pls correct me if im wrong!! i wouldn't be surprised if fanta is more casual about it,, so i'm not super confident about it but this is my general impression!!)
under the cut bc this got very long🙇‍♂️
from my understanding fanta (and LDH as a whole) actually tend to be quite strict with honorifics and formal speech. i remember just recently seeing a video of some Johnny Company groups on tv with some LDH members where they discussed the LDH high five rule, which is that kouhai must ALWAYS high five senpais with two hands
Tumblr media
the J company members were very shocked (and maybe impressed?) by this because J company groups will apparently be quite casual with senpais
i won't speak to other groups because I'm not familiar with them, but in Fanta the members tend to be very strict with calling each other formally. all younger members will call members older than them with "name-kun" (except sekai, every member calls him sekai-san) and use honorific speech. Keito always calls nacchan as "horinatsu-kun" because he is younger, as does sota (though sota will also occasionally use "hori-san")
and all of this is despite many members knowing each other for 10+ years or being childhood friends (keito still speaks formally with sawa and horinatsu still calls leiya "leiya-kun". though from what i can think of, whenever horinatsu refers to shota, he does not use -kun), so i would say ldh is just very strict about it.🤷‍♀️ there is even a weird case with sawa and taiki, where sawa is older but taiki is the senpai so they both call each other taiki-kun and natsuki-kun (or sometimes sawa-san)
however i will say that while they are strict, because fanta is obviously very close the times i can think of off the top of my head where a younger member will drop honorifics, the older member will call them out, but they never actually seem very bothered (like with horinatsu, he is still laughing while hitting keito, and im pretty sure keito didn't apologize)
Tumblr media
others i can think of are leiya calling taiki with no honorifics here (at 1:04): the question is "who do you think is most improved since debut" and leiya just says "taiki" and taiki yells "don't call me without honorifics!" but is still just laughing, and leiya does not apologize
and taiki dropping to informal speech while talking to sekai here (at 2:03). the question is "please tell us a good point of the next member!" which in this case is taiki, and taiki says "please tell me! (informally)" and sekai says "why are you speaking informally?" and taiki and the members just laugh🥰
in terms of using formal vs informal speech in general there are some members that i have definitely seen drop them from time to time (like yusei to leiya and sota to yusei) but even then they will always still call the older one with -kun
though all of this is to say its very possible that they are just like this in front of the camera to follow ldh rules and are very friendly and informal behind camera but i cant speak to that;;🙇‍♂️

My problems with WRGP and how I would personally fix it
(Dub names used because that’s how I experienced the bulk of 5Ds)
Tumblr media
Looking back on it, I think the biggest problem with WRGP is that the teams and set up were just boring.
The first duel, Team Unicorn, immediately put Yusei in the position of having to defeat all three duelists on his own, giving Turbo duel newcomer Akiza nothing to do but prop him up then get removed from the tournament immediately after, which just instantly killed my interest in the arc. Sure the fusion thing was bad and still a plothole to me but I MIGHT have forgiven it (or at least been less angry than I was) if it weren’t there for the sole purpose of propping up a character that the writing had kind of turned into a Mary Sue at that point.
The setup is also really limiting. Team turbo duelling is a fun concept and I like the idea of passing the torch onto the next person, but why does it have to be the same order every time? Or close to the same order at least. One of my biggest problems with 5Ds is that Yusei is an overly perfect character. He’s lost one duel, a flashback with Jack, which did add some stakes to their first duel and even their second to an extent, and by all accounts, he lost that first duel against Kalin. He just fell off his bike before it could be counted as a loss and that did add tension to their rematch.
Apart from those though, Yusei felt like he was guaranteed to win every duel he had. Why not fix this by varying the order of duellists during WRGP a bit? The only duel that really needed to come down to Yusei winning was the final one against Aporia, so why not have him go first or second in the earlier duels to let the other characters shine and accrue some wins?
Here’s where my rewriting starts. I’ll still be keeping all the same major plotpoints, just making some changes to who wins which duels in ways that I hope will make the arc more engaging. So anything I don’t mention you can assume stays the same. For starters, I think having Akiza beat Team Unicorn would be the best way to open the arc.
Tumblr media
Akiza had a lot of pressure put on her in that duel after the way Jack lost and it would be a great payoff to her learning how to Turbo duel. In this setup, Yusei either goes before her, thinking only he can recover Jack’s loss (only to lose himself) or Akiza goes second and Yusei doesn’t get a chance to duel here. Either of these are fine options in my opinion so take your pick. Heck, I wouldn’t personally want this, but they could still have her get knocked out of the tournament after that win if you really needed Crow to be in the tournament and it wouldn’t have felt nearly as bad as it does currently.
Then the Team Taiyo duel could honestly stay the same.
Tumblr media
Team Taiyo was the only part of this arc I consistently enjoyed, I thought they were well characterised and there was a lot of heart to their story. It didn’t personally connect with me like it does others but it was still endearing and interesting enough to hold my attention. The duel does come down to Yusei but not in a way that felt forced or unneeded like the rest of these duels and if he lost the duel against Team Unicorn in my previous setup, then this is a fine way for him to recover that loss.
Team Ragnarok are kind of boring apart from their Norse Mythology themed cards.
Tumblr media
Honestly, if it weren’t for their involvement in Arc Cradle, I’d say it would be better to skip over this team entirely but if they must stay, trim the duel a bit and make it come down to Jack. Let Yusei lose to one of them and have Jack recover from his devastating loss against Team Unicorn. Having Yusei lose right before the finals like this would raise the stakes, even if just by a bit, when he’s on his own facing Aporia.
Tumblr media
It would also add more meaning to the scene where Crow and Jack (Akiza should be there too in this) ride alongside him and tell him he’s not alone, they got here as a team and they’re still a team now. If they’d actually gotten there as a team, sharing equal credit for their wins that got them to this point, this moment would mean a lot more.
Now, obviously this may not completely salvage the arc for some. I’m speaking as someone who found most of this arc boring or frustrating but felt Ark Cradle managed to salvage the second part of this show. Parts of this arc are worthwhile and important going into Ark Cradle, which is absolutely worthwhile, but as a whole, it falls short and drags the whole show down for me. I still love 5Ds but its pitfalls hurt the most out of every Yugioh series to me. So this was just ideas for what they could’ve done. I don’t have the time or energy to use these ideas for an actual story so I figured I’d just discuss them here. Hope you enjoyed reading my rambling.

Yug.ioh 5ds Sub Spoilers, a little convo + artwork
I like to imagine I did the make-up to cover Yusei’s mark. During my education I got a qualification for my minor subject, camouflage. Its to cover up tattoos, marks and scars with special make-up thats water proof and not easily been taken off. You really have to choose layers of colors that will come close or exact the same as the skin tone.
During this progress when I’m working to cover his mark slowly up, having a conversation what I am doing by every step and Yusei is just sitting and listening.
Sharon: “First I have to make your skin free from grease, the next step is to set a first tone to blend with the color tone. The first base is white and I mix it with a little grey undertone since the mark is very goldish yellow.. after that I have to look for a color the pallet thats close to your skin..hmmm… this one is close but I should mix it with a little red color…do not laugh!”
Yu.ei: “Sorry, I never saw you so serious.”
Sharon: “Im very focused to do this right. I used to love doing this.”
Y.usei: “Why did you ever stopped?”
Sharon: “Cause I couldn’t find a job in the beauty branch and didn’t enjoy it anymore. Its now more, another skill I can add to my list of things I can do good.”
Yus.ei: “You are incredible.”
Sharon: “Jwjsksms where that come from out of sudden?”
Yu.sei: “Well you always say I am smart but you, you are kinda like a scientist yourself.”
Sharon: “Yu.sei please, its just special make-up.”
Y.usei: “Well if you had to ask me to put this camouflage kit on someone, I have no clue where to start.”
Sharon: “Its been a while for me, I had to rethink what stap is next to make it match. Please close your eyes, I dont want this stuff coming in your eyes.”
Yusei: “Yes ma’am.”
Tumblr media
Sharon: “Im done! What do you think?”
Yu.sei: “It’s like it never was been there.”
Sharon: “Thank you.”
Y.usei: “Do I look better with or without the mark?”
Sharon: “The mark has become a part of you. I cant even imagine you without your mark…I loved you without and I love you now with.”
Y.usei: “You never brothered by it?”
Sharon: “I have only though about how much you must have been suffered and in pain…I was scared first to kiss you on that cheek cause I didnt know if you would like to been touched…but also I wanted to make you forget about the pain and fill that memory with a nice one…”
Y.usei: “Like being covered in starlight number 6 lipstick?”
Sharon: mocking “It was suppose to be kiss proof…”
Y.usei: “I was joking, Starshine.”
Sharon: “Funny pants.”
Y.usei: “I wouldnt mind having some starlight on my lips.”
Sharon: “Is that a request?”
Yu.sei pulled her closer as she stopped him.
Sharon: “Sorry. I dont kiss strangers.” she said as she got a confused look from him.
Sharon, trying to keep a straight face: “Your are Daniel, aren’t you?”
“Shar…” Yusei chuckled as she shared the laugh as she got pulled closer onto his lap. Sitting down he pulled her chin up and covered her lips with his.
Sharon: “Yus?”
Y.usei: “Hmm?”
Sharon: “Please be careful, okay?”
Y.usei: “I will try my best.”
Ah yes , what a cutie💖🩵

Sigh.
Screw it, I have to talk about it. Watching episodes 56 and 57, but especially the latter, hurts my heart every time I do it. Yusei has had some emotional moments up until this point, but I would, without the shadow of a doubt, claim that this is definitely his most emotional moment in the entire show. And the thing is, it's so unnecessary, and not in the "this is a poor writing decision"-kind of way. Quite the opposite. Allow me to elaborate under the readmore because I have a feeling this post is going to get long.
A question I had for a long while before I really started bothering to analyse the show, especially for fic writing, was when and how Yusei found out that his parents were leading developers in the Moment reactor that ended up causing Satellite's separation, killed presumably hundreds of people, and caused a lot of the misery in his own life, too. The thing is, the show never gives a definitive answer to that. Only context clues. We can infer from Yusei's reaction the first time Goodwin mentions his father and the Moment research before the signers depart for Satellite that this circumstance isn't news to him. Furthermore, we can infer from Crow's reaction to the impassioned speech Yusei gives in episode 57 that he must have known about his parents' identities for a while.
Tumblr media
Personally, I take this to mean that Yusei has known about his parents' involvement in the Moment research for several years at this point—in fact, I'd go as far as saying that he's known about it since his childhood, and there's a reason why I think that: To a child, the line of thinking "my dad developed this giant machine that ended up blowing up and killing a lot of people, even many of my friends' parents" makes complete sense. (Even taking into account the cover-up the city did, pretending the whole explosion was a tectonic shift—because you can't convince me even for one second that the people in Satellite who lived close enough to the reactor didn't see that the Moment explosion happened first.) And I really feel the need to stress that this explanation is something I think especially a child could have come up with. Because with all the context the show gives us about the Zero Reverse incident, it's easy to see that there were a lot more factors involved there than just "man built bad machine, bad machine exploded". In fact, this drives me up a wall so badly I need to dig into it for a second.
With all the exposition Roman/Rudger gives us in this duel, we learn several things about the late Professor Fudo. Chiefly among them, three things: He was extremely smart, he had a project with the potential to change the future on his hands, and most of all, he was extremely passionate about that project, to the point of Roman/Rudger making this comparison:
Tumblr media
The reason I'm mentioning that is because despite all the above-mentioned factors, Professor Fudo was 100%, completely ready to shut down his entire project when he realised it could become dangerous for the city and its people. And as someone who's worked with people engrossed in their own research projects, albeit in a completely different field, let me just say this: Giving up a project of this scale is not a decision you make lightly. Scientific research, as intriguing as it sounds and looks from the outside, can be an absolutely draining affair of trying to get funding for an idea, and fighting to keep that funding later down the line, sometimes even forcing you to pay for things with your own money for a while just to keep the project alive. At a point like the one Yusei's dad was at here, this project would have already had exorbitant amounts of money put towards it, not to speak of countless hours of labour from qualified professionals. This would have been a humongous undertaking, not to speak of the fact that it was likely to be the thing that could have defined the Professor's entire career (even though I don't think that's why he was so invested in it). So I'm going to say it again, because this drives me nuts: Deciding to not simply change the direction of a project like this, to not simply try a different approach, but to instead step away, install containment seals and shut the thing down entirely, taking the whole damned idea back to the drawing board, is. not. a decision any self-respecting researcher would have made lightly. And that's without talking about the sponsors' reactions to the Professor deciding to shut the project down.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Professor may not have been willing to risk the city populace's lives for this project, but the sponsors certainly were. And so was Roman/Rudger, because by that point, he'd already been tempted by the darkness to give in to his worst impulses. It's honestly tragic because with all the facts laid out like that—everything from the project going out of control due to factors Yusei's father couldn't control, to him deciding to shut down what would have been the project of a lifetime, to Iliaster using their shadowy machinations to tempt Roman/Rudger, to him replacing the Professor as head of the project at the sponsors' behest because they wanted a return on what money they invested into it, all the way up to Roman/Rudger purposefully blowing up the reactor in order to be reborn as a dark signer—I, for my part, couldn't find it in me to blame Yusei's dad for everything that happened. Sure, he's somewhere at the start of the causal chain that lead to the Zero Reverse, but saying it was his fault is vastly oversimplifying the whole dilemma, in my opinion. Unfortunately, we all know that there's one person who can't find it in himself to forgive Professor Fudo for being part of the chain of events that led to the Zero Reverse.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
And you know what makes this extra painful? Not only is Yusei blaming his dad, who was trying his damndest to prevent this catastrophe, for what happened, he goes as far as blaming himself for it, too, on behalf of being the late Professor's son. What drives me absolutely insane about this is that there's no need for him to. Even if the Professor had, somehow, been directly responsible for the Zero Reverse, that would still not make Yusei, his son, in any way culpable. None of what happened was even remotely Yusei's fault, and he couldn't have done anything to prevent it, either. He was an infant. This is what I meant by it being unnecessary above—Yusei is carrying this insane amount of guilt around, even though there's no reason for him to. Though I don't think he could be convinced of it, come hell or high water, Yusei is blameless when it comes to the Zero Reverse. What kills me is that Crow even tells him as much:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
But. BUT. There's one more thing I absolutely need to stress: While seeing Yusei shoulder all this blame for a thing he's not responsible for and that I don't consider his father responsible for, either, is painful to watch, my frustration with it does not come from the fact that I consider it sloppy writing, or a character inconsistency, or any other such thing. In fact, I think it's the opposite. Granted, this is obviously built on my headcanon that Yusei has known who his parents were since he was a child, and thus came up with his rather simplistic, causal explanation of "my father invented a thing that caused a horrible catastrophe" without looking at (or even being able to look at, considering how hush-hush the public maintenance department and M.I.D.S. apparently kept the Zero Reverse thing) all the additional factors surrounding the Zero Reverse. And that this simplistic, condemning view of his father and his past had several years to fester, at that. But assuming for a second that this guess of mine is correct, I think the writing around Yusei's guilt complex is actually spot-on. Being confronted with this as a child, he would jump to the conclusion that his father was the reason the catastrophe that changed the lives of everyone he cares about for the worse happened. He would think that as that man's son, he has a responsibility to make up for his father's devastating mistake. And he would willingly put on blinkers, never stopping to consider whether there could have been other factors that contributed to causing the catastrophe, and never stopping to consider whether the friends he's so dedicated to compensating for the losses his father caused them even actually think that he's to blame.
It's like. My frustration with this aspect of Yusei's character is endless. I want to shake him and tell him to stop being so stupid and taking the blame for this insane thing. But at the same time? That's good character writing. That makes perfect sense. And my frustration is earned because I can't help but feel that this is exactly what Yusei's complex is supposed to evoke. So yeah. I love this writing choice, and I want to throw something against the wall every time Yusei gives this speech.

Crossing another series off the list this week: we got the finale of Candy Color Paradox/Ameiro Paradox. Thoughts!
I know -- because I am one of them -- that there was vocal concern about the quality of the acting by the leads of Kimura Keito (Onoe) and Yamanaka Jyutaro (Kaburagi). They were definitely the weakest actors of the entire troupe that cast this show. Besides the very obvious Izuka Kenta, who outacted, like, the trees in his outdoor scenes, even the actors who played the guys’ colleagues at their tabloid newspaper demonstratively outperformed the two leads.
All this being said -- in my past reviews, I admitted to having a weak heart for Onoe and Kaburagi, and I still totally feel that way! I ABSOLUTELY felt like a soccer mom on the sidelines, cheering these two awkward dopes along their journey. I don’t know! I wish I had read the manga for canon background, because I kinda wonder if the awkwardness of their lack of experience, particularly with Kimura’s acting, maybe lent itself an authenticity to the character of Onoe that may have been reflected in the manga?
I have no idea, and I don’t read the forums at MDL, where I believe a lot of this discussion was taking place. But in any case, for me, it was kind of this practice of the guys stumbling around in the first place, figuring out their language together, working individually on their process of confessions, that I honestly loved about this show and the storyline, and it did truly keep me coming back. I really thought their back and forth was sweet.
To me, their miscommunications weren’t as frustrating as, say what went down in Individual Circumstances, where clearly, the storyline would have been solved in a sec if the guys just TALKED. I did say in my review of IC that I happen to appreciate the trope of miscommunication, because I think it’s more relative to Asian cultures than Western viewers might relate to.
But in the case of CCP, I think what I saw in the script was just a simple matter of growth. Kabu needed advice from older and wiser people (maybe not wiser in the case of Izuka’s character, but yadda whatever) to recognize that Onoe’s need was to have simple and direct messages aimed at him. And I thought it was really cute that Kabu challenged Onoe at the end to finally state his (Onoe’s) own feelings into words, which funnily, Onoe hadn’t done the entire series. He himself thought he was communicating clearly -- but they both just needed to SAY THEIR WORDS to seal the deal.
I happened to appreciate the awkward lovey scenes. They were so awkward -- but again, I wonder, was it meant to be that way? Who knows. But that was more heat than I could have expected from this show, AT ALL, so honestly, I appreciate its placement. Onoe’s clearly an awkward dude ANYWAY, so might as well make the love hotel scenes that way.
Final thought (and then one footnote***): I appreciated that the final episode focused solely on the pairing, and not on a case. I loved that. I loved that the script gave the guys 23 minutes to resolve themselves without a distraction. I thought that was compassionate and generous, and a lovely touch.
I wouldn’t HIGHLY recommend this as a must-watch, but if you have the time for something fun and light, with two cuties figuring out EVERRRRRRYTHING, then go for it. I’m glad I watched this one!
***Feel free to skip this, but just wanted to say that it’s clear that Yamanaka’s agency/group (M!LK) and Kimura’s agency (Exile Tribe/LDH-Love Dream Happiness) were trying to make lightning strike twice -- three times in the case of Exile, as Yagi Yusei and Machida Keita have done BL wonders for that agency. I THINK that Yamanaka was M!LK’s first BL actor, but Sano Hayato, the lead for M!LK, is quite a successful actor with significant roles in at least two previous evening doramas (including a non-BL show with Machida). So yeah, I believe the casting for Candy Color Paradox was done to intentionally expand a stable of actors. I just don’t think Yamanaka and Kimura were ready for this script, but I think they did their best.

I must ask what are your consensus on Team 5Ds and Illiaster being on good terms and mayhaps friends
A BEAUTIFUL WORLD TO THINK ABOUT ;__; oh i could sit and think about AUs and timelines where things didn't have to go the way they went and Iliaster and T5D's could have worked to create a better future together. A world where Z-one maybe had just a little more time. When things didn't have to hinge on Dropping An Entire Citadel on Millions of People. wahhhh
like of course you see so many Bruno Lives AUs and takes and stories and such, and I love them, I adore them, but it's always special to see that grace get extended to the rest of Iliaster too. Love thinking about the world where Paradox gets to stick around and is given the privilege of Yugioh Antagonist Redemption at the hands of Team 5D's....love thinking about psychic duelist!Pdox (real and true to me) and Akiza getting to have a dynamic and maybe bonding over their powers. LOVE Aporia sticking around AUs where he can be Leo's gigantic weird but ultimately kind unclefriend. Could easily write a small saga of what-if's and what-about's re: if Primo got shown patience and kindness by Yusei & co. What that could have led to. It's GOOD!! IT'S FUN TO THINK ABOUT!!!
someone remind me to talk about the postcanon 5D's AU burning a hole in my brain relevant to this topic....rotating a particular version of 'Aporia/Primo lives' in my head at TOP speed for the last half a year <3

Check out my latest post on: https://kokorotherapist.wordpress.com/
I’ll give you a sneak peek :)
Assassination Classroom – Karma’s Hatred
I discovered Assassination Classroom way too late. The manga, written by Yusei Matsui, was serialized in Shueisha‘s Weekly Shōnen Jump magazine from July 2012 to March 2016. The anime debuted January 2015 and I must have been sleeping. It’s the classic tale of a bunch of misfit students forced to band together to defeat an evil being and save the world. Except the evil being is actually a really nice guy with a tragic backstory and shaped like an octopus. Oh, and he’s their teacher. Literally their school teacher.
It’s my kind of weird and quirky, so I gave it a try thinking it would be a silly show to pass the time. Ten minutes into the first episode and I realized my foolish mistake. The series is chalk full of likable and relatable characters, fun adventures and plot that doesn’t feel like the artist just stuck things in random places to fill up time before the main battle. Every episode drew me into their world and I did not want it to end at episode 47. But, I’m not here to discuss the series details – that can be another post. It’s karma I want to talk about.
Specifically, Karma Akabane.
