my horrible, sinful secret? i actually like yuuna and the haunted hot springs/plus size elf/monster musume. i talk big game about needing the REAL monsters in order to get anywhere and not the namby-pamby girls with animal ears shit but ill be honest. its junk food to me.its not good for me and i wouldnt recommend someones diet to be made up entirely of it. in fact some parts are rotten and you should not eat them. and yet those anime babes in halloween costumes continue to be a special snack for me. i know the ythhs "oni" is just a woman with a slight marking on her forehead. i KNOW. but she has big tits and i am only a man.
Hello again. It’s time I continue this review with more anime, this time of ones I consider to be good, or at least of value. The spike in quality is very noticeable, and things become amazing very quickly.
EVANGELION:1.11 YOU ARE (NOT) ALONE
My second favorite of the Evangelion movies. This is the one that feels most like an anime, if that makes sense. Evengelion is a bizarre series that doesn’t follow any sort of rules, so it was refreshing to see a movie that feels closer to what I’m used to. It was good. Really good. I still think it’s misogynistic, but I enjoyed it.
The Great Jahy Will Not Be Defeated! (Manga)
This is the first volume of Jahy, and I thought it was really good. It’s a very simple story but is done well through nice art and good jokes. It’s not amazing, but it does a decent job at telling its story and I liked it.
Rascal Does Not Dream of Bunny Girl Senpai-
What a ridiculous title for a mostly good show. The choice of making 4 separate stories into one anime is a somewhat good one. I liked nearly all the characters and thought they were all pretty good. The focus on the protagonist to be the love interest was kind of obnoxious, but it always is. It was good, and had some really interesting and creative concepts. I felt the ending was just a little bit too heart-wrenching, but that could have just been me. It feels like it ends too soon.
Diary of Our Days at the Breakwater-
A very, very ok anime that while it is enjoyable to watch and I really like the main character, it’s just not super interesting. I like the fishing and I like the educational aspects, I like everything. It’s a good anime. But I’m not sure if I really love anything about it.
SHELTER-
A pretty great music video with some incredible animation and a good emotional core.
Cells at Work! CODE BLACK-
What an anime. For the most part, I really enjoyed it. There’s a lot to like, especially the super fun main character. White Blood Cell in particular is a great (love interest?) companion to Red Blood Cell and they make a great team. This series is much more daring and creative than its G-Rated counterpart, and I very much appreciated its style. While I don’t think it’s a masterpiece or like it as much as some of the other anime on this list, I look back on my time watching it very fondly. I looked forward to a new episode every wednesday and it rarely disappointed. I was very sad when It finished. I would love a season 2 if that eventually happens.
Yuuna and the Haunted Hot Springs-
I actually remember seeing clips from this show on Youtube and being utterly confused. After watching, I can say it’s just as ridiculous as before, but with a lot more to like. The male lead is fantastic, and he really makes the show along with Yuuna. Together they make a great team, and the show was always interesting. And every once in a while there was a truly touching moment that made me smile.
How Heavy Are the Dumbbells You Lift?
Not your typical ecchi show, this anime is really quite good. As someone that loves weight lifting and cute things, this is a great match. I love when anime takes a predominantly male-orentied sport or activity and makes it more feminime. It’s a lot of fun, very educational, and has a lot of heart. (And style too!) It definitely has its problems, but overall it’s a great anime that does a really nice job of explaining Strength Training to those that have never seen it before. One day I’ll truly work out to this anime, mark my words.
Ao-Chan Can’t Study-
One of the shows I watched with my free HI-DIVE subscription (Check them out, they’re cool, but only watch on PC) This really surprised me at how funny and entertaining it was. It impressed me with its writing and fun plots. The opening is fantastic, but I really, really loved the main character. Ao is excellent. There are some annoying and unnecessary characters, but all in all, it was a lot of fun.
JOJO STONE OCEAN (First Twelve Episodes)-
Screw you Netflix!! This was a step down from Golden Wind. While it started off pretty strong, it slowly devolved into JoJo the Remix. I mean, a reference is one thing, but the amount of repeated scenes got really ridiculous. When it’s doing something new, it’s great. When it’s doing the same, it sucks. Too familiar and too slow, Stone Ocean feels like a pretty disappointing preview. That said, it was still fun and had some great moments. That said, this is just the beginning, and things will probably change once the full story is released. Screw you Netflix!!
Attack on Titan (First Season)-
Yes, I finally bit the bullet and watched AoT. I’m gonna be honest, this beginning was kind of lackluster. Eren’s angsty antics left a bit of a bad impression, and I truly was just not really invested. The titans were boring, the characters were (seemingly) one-note, and it was too long. But when Eren transforms… I saw a sudden spark. Maybe… Maybe this is worth sticking to the end. There was like this huge shift. While I’m not a fan of this opening, there’s a lot of promise in its rusty exterior.
1. How often do you check out new series running in Jump? I’d imagine very often considering you read through Icehead Gill upon its chapter 1 release.
2. Have you read chapter 1 of quite possibly the gReAteST shonen Jump manga currently talked about on X (formerly known as Twitter) about the Trench Coat glazer boy?
I've been making an active effort to read everything new to Jump since before that was even technically feasible; I believe the first one that I managed to get in on the ground floor of was Magico in 2011, then ST&RS, Harisugawa in Mirror Land, Kurogane, Nisekoi, etc.
A lot of the titles in between, like Cross Manage, Hime-Dol, Hachi, Iron Knight, etc. either simply weren't being translated by anyone or were updating so infrequently that I just wasn't capable of keeping track of them, so before I knew it, they were gone and the well of failed content had filled so much that I was too overwhelmed to make an attempt at it
Viz made things a little easier with their Jump Start program, where they would at least release the first three chapters of a series and then do the rest based on reader demand, but that led to things like Judos, Ultra Battle Satellite, and most egregiously Kagamigami and Straighten Up being left up to fan translators to pick up the pieces, and as far as I could find, very few actually did (if you read Kagamigami in its entirety, you can thank my dear friend @himetsuri for all of her efforts and me to a lesser extent for encouraging her to actually post it publicly)
Yuuna and the Haunted Hot Springs didn't even GET to be a part of Jump Start because it was too adult, and if it weren't for Seven Seas, Viz never would have even attempted to bring it over in the first place
It was only once MangaPlus was instated that I was able to read everything start to finish every week, but even THEN some things fell through the cracks. "I'm From Japan" was a part of Jump Start, and then picked up from like chapter 10 or something without any clear effort to fill in the gaps between
Fortunately, I've been able to keep up with absolutely everything since then, starting with Chainsaw Man in late 2018 all the way to now, so about five full years. That's...shockingly little when you think about it that way. I missed so much that I might never be able to go back and find, and even if I can find it, I might not be able to make myself actually do it. It's disheartening, but at least I can be confident that it won't happen again
As for Kagura Bachi, I don't get the joke. I'm guessing it's like Morbius and people are just clowning on it, but I don't even think it's bad enough to clown on. It's not that great so far, but the art's not half bad and I'm at least interested enough in the concepts to see where it's going. I think people are being kind of rude, honestly, and anyone who legitimately enjoys it would be well within their rights to be upset about the treatment it's getting. I'm not invested enough to care yet if it lasts or not, but you'll never catch me mocking it or any other series for trying to get its foot in the door
