VERSES.
CHICAGOAN KID Nick’s childhood and teen years in Chicago.
THE YALE CLUB  Nick’s early 20s as a Student at Yale, flitting between die-hard studying by day and youthful experimentation with love, sex and substances by night.
JAZZ & LIQUOR  Ready to settle into a more calm, mature, adult life, Nick moves to New York where he intends on working hard and earning an honest living. But, living among socialites at the height of the roaring jazz age, Nick’s plans on having a quiet, career focused life are quick to get derailed...
CRACKED UP (alcoholism, depression, suicidal tendencies TW) Following the events of New York, Nick starts going mad with a mixture of grief and sheer, unadulterated disappointment, along with the heavy burden of the morbid secret he’s sworn to keep. Falling into a deep depression, Nick develops a severe drinking problem, leading him to suffer from further depression, severe anxiety, night terrors, insomnia and irrational fits of rage. After brushing closely with death on more than one occasion, he eventually checks himself into rehab.
WHITE PICKET FENCE After an extended stay at a Sanatarium in Chicago, Nick is finally clean. Now filled with nothing but scorn for the so-called American Dream, he moves instead to the Mid-West, where he lives quietly and finds success as a writer. WITHIN & WITHOUT (AU) AU in which Gatsby survived the shooting. After getting out of rehab/ therapy, Nick reclaims his cottage next door on Long island beach and flits between there and his house in the Mid-West.

What’s your favorite memory from Yale?
Tumblr media
Strict schedules, squinting through books via candlelight, and whispering in the dark well past curfew came to Benjamin's mind and he smiled, hardly able to focus his thoughts. Ironically, that had often been the case as a boy, as well; due to being well-versed in most presented studies, he'd found himself a bit bored and prone to daydreams.
"A part of me wishes I'd applied myself more," Benjamin said, "though studies are only a small fraction of one's e.ducation. In truth, it's the friendships, the brotherhood I will miss most." With a wry smile, he confessed, "Nearly every single one of those boys -- men now -- know bits of damning information about me, because I was prone to mischief whenever my mind wandered. There are far too many pranks to list."
Not to mention, all the fines incurred by his name. He'd found his pockets considerably lighter that first year alone.
"But a favorite memory?" Benjamin hummed, leaning back with his arms folded. "I don't really know...I tend to be fonder of feelings rather than particular events. It's all about the warmth certain memories -- certain people -- make you feel above all else."
H.ale and E.noch often came to mind as those who irrevocably buoyed and altered his heart, and yet such thoughts often left him with a painful, bone-chilling ache in his throat...much like the ache his dear friend had assuredly felt with the n.oose wrapped around his neck.
With that ache only worsening, Benjamin winced and said, "Some memories should be private. There were long, furtive talks told in confidence, plays and clubs and whispered words that I'll always cherish, but never feel comfortable enough to share. I hope you can understand."

Welcome!
Tumblr media
Choir screen from the Cathedral of Valladolid, ca. 1763-64, at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. Photo taken June 4, 2023.
Visio divina
For my Summer 2023 formation for ministry class, I am employing the prayer practice Visio divina on a weekly basis by contemplating art (and the art found in Creation) and scripture through meditation/prayer. Prayer, art, nature, and travel? Yes, please!
I've chosen the choir gate as the art for week 1. The gate is a massive piece that spans the gallery at the Met, dwarfing everything around it. Its history is shown in a photo below.
How did I end up at the Met? My son and his fiance took the train up to NYC from Baltimore and asked us to meet them before flying out to OK and China, respectively. Of course, we had to meet up at the Yale Club (that serves Yale, UVA, and maybe Dartmouth alumni). It's quite frou frou and very fun, but we were too late for brunch -- the room was being used for a Drag Queen Brunch. The sounds from that party that floated up to the library were awesome, and I did step out onto the floor and try to crash the party, but my son dragged me back into the elevator. Shame.
No cameras allowed at the Yale Club, but you had to use your camera to see the rules, so...yeah, I took a pic cuz I'm a smartass.
(Duke, Notre Dame, Cornell, and Brown alums who like the idea of the Yale Club can actually join the Cornell Club in NYC -- I'd look into it but I've managed without it this long (Go Irish!) so I doubt I'll join after my time at Duke. As I'm continuing in ministry, I also doubt that I'd want to fork over the dough for it, but a girl can dream. I do like nice things, and the Yale Club is fun!)
We weren't going to sit around a club all day, nice as the library was, so we headed to the Met hoping for art, public restrooms, and a rooftop view of Central Park. Two out of three: the line for the single elevator to the roof snaked all around one gallery and none of us had patience for it. As we headed for Egypt, we ran smack into a beautiful collection of religious art not housed at the Cloisters. I didn't actually smack into the gate, but I felt quite gobsmacked and a little dizzy leaning all the way back to look at its height.
Navigate to this page and click on the LISTEN button to hear more about the gate and its history. https://www.metmuseum.org/art/collection/search/201926
The verses
I've selected II Peter 1:11 (LB) for my meditation on this choir gate:
"And God will open wide the gates of heaven for you to enter into the eternal kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ."
That's good stuff on its own, but just look below at the treasure trove of faith declarations that precede it!
II Peter 1:1-11:
"The faith I speak of is the kind that Jesus Christ our God and Savior gives to us. How precious it is, and how just and good he is to give this same faith to each of us.
2 Do you want more and more of God’s kindness and peace? Then learn to know him better and better. 3 For as you know him better, he will give you, through his great power, everything you need for living a truly good life: he even shares his own glory and his own goodness with us! 4 And by that same mighty power he has given us all the other rich and wonderful blessings he promised; for instance, the promise to save us from the lust and rottenness all around us, and to give us his own character.
5 But to obtain these gifts, you need more than faith; you must also work hard to be good, and even that is not enough. For then you must learn to know God better and discover what he wants you to do. 6 Next, learn to put aside your own desires so that you will become patient and godly, gladly letting God have his way with you. 7 This will make possible the next step, which is for you to enjoy other people and to like them, and finally you will grow to love them deeply. 8 The more you go on in this way, the more you will grow strong spiritually and become fruitful and useful to our Lord Jesus Christ. 9 But anyone who fails to go after these additions to faith is blind indeed, or at least very shortsighted and has forgotten that God delivered him from the old life of sin so that now he can live a strong, good life for the Lord.
10 So, dear brothers, work hard to prove that you really are among those God has called and chosen, and then you will never stumble or fall away. 11 And God will open wide the gates of heaven for you to enter into the eternal kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
The meditation
Ready to join me? Reread the passage (I prefer the NLT for more inclusive language and clear phrasing -- the LB used the phrase "gates of Heaven," so I felt obliged to use it.) Scroll up to the picture of the gate, examine the art at your leisure, and let the words of the scripture lead your thoughts as you settle into prayer with God. How does the iron relate to the Word? What about the piece grabs your attention? Why did the artists use this design? How does its use in a church relate to the scripture passage? How does viewing the gate affect the way you feel about God today?
What words stuck with you when you read the passage? What phrases do you keep coming back to? How do you feel about them? Do they inspire you? Anger you? Confuse you? Are you ok with this?
After you think your thoughts, be still and let God speak to you.
(See, prof? I was paying attention! Thanks for leading me.)
Info and photos for perspective. Note how the first cross section of the gate doesn't even make it into the shot. Massive, beautiful, skilled work that functioned in a religious setting. Amazing! God is good in this crazy life!

Name: Charlotte Wiseman (fc: christina aguilera)
Aliases: Cherry with a C, Honey like what bees make, Charlie, Karolina, Alabama
Age: Verse dependent!
Date of birth: 9th June
Birthplace: Nashville
Residence: Vegas, baby!
Gender: female
Sexuality: Bisexual
Occupation: Band singer, showgirl and conwoman (verse depending)
Family: Molly Wiseman (mother), Brian Wiseman (father).
Body type: Endomorph
Hair colour: Blonde
Eye colour: Brown, wears blue contacts
Height: 5’3”
Positive: Bright, bubbly, sweet and well meaning, optimistic.
Negative: Will steal all your money and ply you with booze, quick to temper or tears, speaks before thinking.
Likes: Singing, dancing, a good show tune, pretty pink sickly sweet cocktails, fast food.
Dislikes: Smartmouths, know-it-alls, people with no manners, wandering hands, whisky.
Her story is not too dissimilar to the stories of many of those trying to make their living on the strip. A young girl from a working class family with dreams of becoming a broadway star or country singer - her mom put her through beauty pageants from as soon as she could walk, her dad would drive her to various dance classes and singing on a saturday morning.. They of course were happy to encourage their daughter’s hobbies, but Molly did sometimes look at Charlotte like she was their ticket out of there, their very own Shirley Temple.
In school, she coasted - not by choice, but by the fact that some people just aren’t booksmart. Charlotte was a charming girl, got on with her teachers and was popular among the kids in school, but her grades barely cut it. And it wasn’t for lack of trying; she had tutors for extra help that she fit in among her dancing and pageants, but she wasn’t too focused on college or anything like that, wasn’t fussed about Yale or Harvard like most others were when the end of highschool came along. Instead, she was focused on forging a career for herself either singing with a guitar like her favourite person Dolly Parton or dancing, singing and acting her little heart out on Broadway. But where to begin? She didn’t live close enough to New York to drop into auditions whenever she wanted, but she did live in a place known for its music.
But becoming a star proved harder than one might think, endless rejection if she could find someone to even listen to her sing to begin with - it began to weigh on the young woman heavily, feeling her dreams of a future slipping through her manicured fingers.
So, she came up with a new dream after watching a travel programme about Vegas… she was going to be a showgirl. Charlotte saved for a while, before kissing her mom and dad on their cheeks, threw her two cases into the back of a cab and was Vegas bound!
How did she save? Why, by going out to various military bases and bars and singing her heart out with a band made up of older men who still had a bit of that Nashville spark. She made grown men swoon, had them begging her to come visit them when she was next in town, some even wanted her to just write to them. Which she did. That was the time in her life when she was happiest and one she wished she could return to, deep down.
However, in Vegas, things were not what she had hoped. Turned down from auditions at the big places, Charlotte was too short, had hips that were too wide, a load of bullshit! But she was ever the optimist, wasn’t she? So she went into every bar and club she could, asking if they were looking for a showgirl, singer, anything and eventually found herself lucky. Lovelace was a bar with burlesque dancers, showgirls and singers, they welcomed in the bubbly buxom blonde and put her on show after show. She dances, sings, sits on knees and giggles. But all that don’t pay the bills, so Cherry became good at swindling.
She gave free drinks to men that wanted her company, took wallets, said that bottle service (which the bar didn’t do) was only an extra few hundred and just bought bottles over herself, she would rake it in. Livin’ la vida loca. Despite all this, she holds out some hope that one day things will fall into place for her and she’ll find some sort of stardom – her voice is really good, soulful and strong, able to make men weep singing a sweet country ballad but old rockers thrash about with her shredding her guitar and singing master of puppets.

Memorial Day, which is an annual holiday in the U.S. held on the last Monday of May, honors all those who died serving in the U.S. military. It also marks the unofficial start of summer and comes with a three-day holiday weekend where people spend extra time with family and friends by sharing a meal or planning backyard barbecues or picnics.
The day also comes with military ceremonies and gravesite visits and what is widely known is that the first national Memorial Day observance happened in D.C.’s backyard, at Arlington National Cemetery on May 30, 1868, three years after the end of the Civil War. How formerly enslaved Black Americans started the real first Memorial Day in 1865 is known by only a few as the event was for many years suppressed history.
Just about a month after the Confederacy surrendered in 1865, in Charleston, South Carolina, newly emancipated Black people there exhumed a mass grave for Union soldiers who made the ultimate sacrifice for freedom.
During the Civil War, the Confederate army held Union soldiers as captives in Charleston’s Washington Race Course and Jockey Club, a country club that the Confederate army transformed into a makeshift prison. According to History.com, over 260 Union soldiers died due to poor conditions at the prison which led to diseases. Those who died were buried in a mass grave behind the grandstands.
When the Union army seized Charleston, emancipated men and women honored the fallen soldiers by giving them a proper burial. They exhumed the mass grave of the Union soldiers in April 1865 and reinterred the bodies in a new cemetery they built with a tall white-washed fence. They wrote on the fence the words “Martyrs of the Race Course.” It took them two weeks to reinter the body of each soldier.
On May 1, 1865, about a month after the Civil War formally ended, Charleston held what is now believed to be the first Memorial Day commemoration on record. According to History.com, “a crowd of 10,000 people, mostly freed slaves with some white missionaries, staged a parade around the race track. Three thousand Black schoolchildren carried bouquets of flowers and sang ‘John Brown’s Body.’ Members of the famed 54th Massachusetts and other Black Union regiments were in attendance and performed double-time marches. Black ministers recited verses from the Bible.”
Interestingly, Charleston is where the event marking the beginning of the Civil War began. It is now recognized as where some Charlestonians first celebrated the Union troops via the 1865 event.
“It’s the fact that this occurred in Charleston at a cemetery site for the Union dead in a city where the Civil war had begun and that it was organized and done by African American former slaves is what gives it such poignancy,” Yale History and African American studies professor Dr. David W. Blight said of the 1865 event.
Blight discovered the untold story of the first Memorial Day while going through archival materials from Union soldiers in a Harvard University library in 1996.
“This was a story that had really been suppressed both in the local memory and certainly the national memory,” said Blight. “But nobody who had witnessed it could ever have forgotten it.”
“Our history is full of wonderful moments, it’s also full of dark moments,” Dr. Adam Domby, a Civil War historian told WJLA. “Southern history is not just the history of the Confederacy. It’s also the history of before and after.”
After the war, the old horse track and country club were torn down. A rich Northern patron helped move the graves of the Union soldiers from the white-fenced graveyard in Charleston to the Beaufort National Cemetery.

okay i have an encyclopedic phd-level knowledge of glee and this is how i think they would cover dream’s songs
roadtrip: unfortunately this would be puck. they would add a subplot in like s5 where he drives up from ohio to yale to visit quinn and then they’d break up (temporarily) and he’d visit glee club and sing roadtrip as like a demonstration. artie would take the pmbata verse (he would also inexplicably be visiting, i dont know, it’s glee, nothing ever has to be justified).
mask: i could see this going two ways. this could be a ryder-heavy group finale number in s4 where they do an episode about everyone struggling with school (they’d bring back the dyslexia plotline), OR it could be an early kurt solo back when he was still in the closet. ryder’s voice is more similar to dream’s so it would be better-suited but ryan murphy likes giving kurt a bunch of random shit to sing that doesn’t fit his voice bc kurt is his self-insert, so it’s very possible.
change my clothes: this feels like a finn and sam duet to me. initially gave me competition piece vibes but i think it’s just bc it’s thematically similar to man in the mirror which they did for s3 regionals? so instead im thinking it’s one of the episodes where finn decides he wants to Do Something Good, probably related to his dad, and it ties in with one of sam’s “being poor” storylines. im feeling early s3 while finn is deciding whether he wants to go to college. finn sings the dream verses and sam sings alec’s.

More information:
-Finn and Foster have had a rocky road. Always competing to be the best when they were younger until Foster grew tired of it.
- Foster doesn’t agree with how Finn acts once he is one the football team, how he treats and speaks to others.
- Foster is highly against bullying, will take her own licks but stand up for others in a heartbeat.
- Foster doesn’t agree with how Finn and Puck treat their girlfriends or their view on dating in general.
- When Quinn gets pregnant Foster steps up to help when Finn doesn’t.
- Foster is a bit of a flirt with the Unholy Trinity but honestly wants an true honest relationship.
- Foster is protective of the Unholy Trinity and later the rest of the glee club.
- Best friend becomes Kurt.
- Foster is not afraid of violence and will fight with words or physically for the ones she loves.
- Foster isn’t afraid of sue, which could gain her respect.
Foster is somewhat quiet until they get to know someone. They don’t really have friends until Glee, they’ll hang out with the basketball team or when they get drug to hang out with Finn’s friends but it’s not their scene.
Foster isn’t a loser but they do fly under the radar until Basketball season.
Foster doesn’t automatically join glee, not until episode two or three. Part of the reason Foster joins is because they do have the same passion for music Finn does. But also to slyly keep an eye on their brother because they noticed how he’s starting to act toward Rachel. Foster hates how Finn treats Quinn with a passion. Also Foster feels like this might finally be a place for them to safely discover themself.
Rest is verse dependent and world built with partners.
After Graduation Foster does get a basketball scholarship as well as modeling gigs as themself to help awareness and promote being yourself.
Later on Foster does join an NBA/WNBA team while still doing modeling gigs on the side. Self awareness and self love is very important to them.

In the third decade of the 21st century, the Social Register still exists, there are still debutante balls, polo and lacrosse are still patrician sports, and old money families still summer at Newport. But these are fossil relics of an older class system. The rising ruling class in America is found in every major city in every region. Membership in it depends on having the right diplomas—and the right beliefs.
To observers of the American class system in the 21st century, the common conflation of social class with income is a source of amusement as well as frustration. Depending on how you slice and dice the population, you can come up with as many income classes as you like—four classes with 25%, or the 99% against the 1%, or the 99.99% against the 0.01%. In the United States, as in most advanced societies, class tends to be a compound of income, wealth, education, ethnicity, religion, and race, in various proportions. There has never been a society in which the ruling class consisted merely of a basket of random rich people.
Progressives who equate class with money naturally fall into the mistake of thinking you can reduce class differences by sending lower-income people cash—in the form of a universal basic income, for example. Meanwhile, populists on the right tend to imagine that the United States was much more egalitarian, within the white majority itself, than it really was, whether in the 1950s or the 1850s.
Both sides miss the real story of the evolution of the American class system in the last half century toward the consolidation of a national ruling class—a development which is unprecedented in U.S. history. That’s because, from the American Revolution until the late 20th century, the American elite was divided among regional oligarchies. It is only in the last generation that these regional patriciates have been absorbed into a single, increasingly homogeneous national oligarchy, with the same accent, manners, values, and educational backgrounds from Boston to Austin and San Francisco to New York and Atlanta. This is a truly epochal development.
In living memory, every major city in the United States had its own old money families with their own clubs and their own rituals and their own social and economic networks. Often the money was not very old, going back to a real estate killing or a mining fortune or an oil strike a generation or two before. Even so, the heirs and heiresses set themselves up as a local aristocracy. Like other aristocracies, these urban patricians renewed their bloodlines and bank accounts by admitting new money, once the parvenus had served probation and assimilated the values of the local patriciate.
These regional urban patriciates were similar demographically, at a time when the racial caste system that divided whites from nonwhites was accompanied by an ethnic caste system among whites. Within the white population, Anglo American Protestants, preferably Episcopalian or Presbyterian, were at the top, followed by Anglo Americans belonging to more vulgar denominations like the Methodists and Baptists. German and Scandinavian Americans could be honorary Anglo Americans. But Irish American Catholics, Jews, and Italian and Polish Americans occupied a lower rung. Mexican Americans occupied an ambiguous position. In some areas they were discriminated against as Blacks were, in others they were treated as the equivalent of low-status whites. Black Americans and Asian Americans were excluded.
The Anglo American Protestant patricians in every region and state shared a common Anglo American and Trans-Atlantic culture—but not a common national culture. Instead, they had regional cultures separately based on a common British and European heritage. This is so peculiar that it needs to be explained.
Let us begin with what they shared: Trans-Atlantic culture. From the earliest days of the republic, the wealthy elites of even the most remote and Godforsaken parts of the South and West could afford to vacation in Europe. They would bring back the latest French and British fashions to rural Mississippi or Wyoming. Before the self-consciously regional Prairie Style of Frank Lloyd Wright, there was never any indigenous American architecture, just wave after wave of faddish European styles: Palladianism, Greek Revival, Gothic, Romanesque. The relics of these transient Europhile fads litter the United States in the form of courthouses and other old public buildings from coast to coast.
In contrast, local patriciates tried to boost their own authors at the expense of those in other American regions. My maternal grandmother, a schoolteacher for part of her career, belonged to the minor Southern gentry. She saw to it that my brother and I were introduced to the literary canon as educated white Southerners of the early 20th century conceived of it: A British substrate, consisting of Robert Louis Stevenson and Rudyard Kipling, overlain by Southern writers like Sidney Lanier, whose “The Marshes of Glynn” introduced me to the wonders of verse. The equivalent New England literary canon ran directly from Shakespeare and Milton and Pope and Scott and Tennyson to Emerson, Longfellow and Whittier and the other “Fireside Poets” (Whitman, Hawthorne, and Melville only acquired their present status later, thanks to mid-20th-century academics).
In short, for two centuries there was a double competition among regional American oligarchies. On the one hand, the local notables, particularly those from the newly settled regions, had to prove they were not backward bumpkins, but were just as up-to-date with regard to European fashions as the patricians in New York and Boston and Philadelphia. On the other hand, some of them dreamed that the city they ran, whether it was Atlanta or Milwaukee, would become the Athens or Renaissance Florence of North America, and favored local writers, poets, and artists, as long as their work was in fashionable styles and did not inspire seditious thoughts among the local masses. The subnational blocs of New Englanders, Southerners, and Midwesterners fought to control the federal government in order to promote their regional economic interests.
The status of Harvard and Yale as prestigious national rather than regional universities is relatively recent. A few generations ago, it was assumed that the sons of the local gentry (this was before coeducation began in the 1960s and 1970s) would remain in the area and rise to high office in local and state business, politics, and philanthropy—goals that were best served if they attended a local elite college and joined the right fraternity, rather than being educated in some other part of the country. College was about upper-class socialization, not learning, which is why parochial patricians favored regional colleges and universities. If your family was in the local social register, that was much more important than whether you went to an Ivy League college or a local college or no college at all.
American patricians of earlier generations would have been surprised that rich people, many of them celebrities, would scheme and bribe university officers to get their children into a few top universities. Scheming to get into the right local “society” club—now that would have made sense.
Upper-class women were the chief enforcers of local “society.” Anybody who thinks that women are somehow naturally more generous and egalitarian than men has never encountered a doyenne of high society. Mrs. Astor’s 400 families in New York had their counterparts throughout the United States, from the Mainline elite in Philadelphia to the Highland Park set in Dallas.
As in the novels of Jane Austen, the daughters of the local ruling class had to be married to a young man from a good family, if the dynasty was not to fall into disgrace. Until recently (and to this day, in some circles) a young woman’s debut in society was, if anything, more important than marriage itself, since the debutante ball helped to define her eligibility for a high-status marriage.
When I explain all of this to friends from other countries, they tend to be surprised, if not suspicious of my account. What about frontier egalitarianism? Wasn’t America dominated by the just-folks middle class in the 19th and 20th centuries? Isn’t America in danger now, for the first time in its history, of becoming an Old World style hierarchy?
The egalitarianism of the American frontier is greatly exaggerated. Some of the myth comes from European tourists like Alexis de Tocqueville, Harriet Martineau, and Dickens. For ideological reasons or just for entertainment, they played up how classless and vulgar Americans were for audiences back in Europe. On their trips they mostly encountered the wealthy and educated, who might have been informal by the standards of British dukes or French royalty, but who were hardly yeoman farmers. If these famous tourists had spent their time in slave cabins, immigrant tenements, miners camps, and cowboy bunkhouses, they might have gotten a different sense of how egalitarian America actually was. Elite Americans might have been more likely than elite Brits to smile politely when dealing with working-class people, but they were no more likely to welcome them into the family.
The Western frontier was not entirely a myth, to be sure. My great-great-grandfather proposed marriage to my great-great-grandmother by handing her a letter from horseback before riding north on a cattle drive from Texas to Kansas, and a distant uncle was murdered by outlaws on the road outside of Austin in the 1880s. But the Wild West or boomtown era everywhere was brief. The first white settlers in a region may have been trappers or small farmers or ranchers or outlaws or pirates, but once Native Americans had been removed to reservations and the railroad was in place, the area was rapidly gentrified. The rich moved in, bought up the good land, built mansions and the local opera house in the current European style and drove the frontiersmen and their families out.
White poverty in the United States today is concentrated in greater Appalachia, because the Scots Irish settlers, often illiterate squatters, were priced out of other areas and ended up in the hills of Appalachia, the Ozarks, and the Texas Hill Country. As soon as the affluent discover the scenic views in those areas, they will be forced to move once more, just as old-stock families are already being priced out of the Texas Hill Country by rich refugees from California, bringing with them their cultural heritage of trophy wineries and boutiques, New Age spirituality and organic cuisines.
Because there was no single national American elite, there was never a single Western frontier. New Englanders moved west in a band to the south of the Great Lakes, and then moved eastward and inland from ports on the Pacific Coast. While the Scots Irish followed the hills, the Southern planter class acquired cotton-friendly soil from Virginia along the Gulf of Mexico to central Texas, where the coastal plain collides with the southernmost part of the Great Plains. As the historians David Hackett Fischer and Wilbur Zelinsky have pointed out, these parallel bands of east-to-west settlement brought separate Anglo American cultures, reflected in everything from codes of honor to town layouts (town planners in greater New England laid out village greens with churches and schools, while Southern towns tended to be centered on the courthouse).
In short, a historical narrative which describes a fall from the yeoman democracy of an imagined American past to the plutocracy and technocracy of today is fundamentally wrong. While American society was not formally aristocratic it was hierarchical and class-ridden from the beginning—not to mention racist and ethnically biased. What’s new today is that these highly exclusive local urban patriciates are in the process of being absorbed into the first truly national ruling class in American history—which is a good thing in some ways, and a bad thing in others.
Compared with previous American elites, the emerging American oligarchy is open and meritocratic and free of most glaring forms of racial and ethnic bias. As recently as the 1970s, an acquaintance of mine who worked for a major Northeastern bank had to disguise the fact of his Irish ancestry from the bank’s WASP partners. No longer. Elite banks and businesses are desperate to prove their commitment to diversity. At the moment Wall Street and Silicon Valley are disproportionately white and Asian American, but this reflects the relatively low socioeconomic status of many Black and Hispanic Americans, a status shared by the Scots Irish white poor in greater Appalachia (who are left out of “diversity and inclusion” efforts because of their “white privilege”). Immigrants from Africa and South America (as opposed to Mexico and Central America) tend to be from professional class backgrounds and to be better educated and more affluent than white Americans on average—which explains why Harvard uses rich African immigrants to meet its informal Black quota, although the purpose of affirmative action was supposed to be to help the American descendants of slaves (ADOS). According to Pew, the richest groups in the United States by religion are Episcopalian, Jewish, and Hindu (wealthy “seculars” may be disproportionately East Asian American, though the data on this point is not clear).
Membership in the multiracial, post-ethnic national overclass depends chiefly on graduation with a diploma—preferably a graduate or professional degree—from an Ivy League school or a selective state university, which makes the Ivy League the new social register. But a diploma from the Ivy League or a top-ranked state university by itself is not sufficient for admission to the new national overclass. Like all ruling classes, the new American overclass uses cues like dialect, religion, and values to distinguish insiders from outsiders.
Dialect. You may have been at the top of your class in Harvard business school, but if you pronounce thirty-third “toidy-toid” or have a Southern drawl, you might consider speech therapy.
Religion. You may have edited the Yale Law Review, but if you tell interviewers that you recently accepted Jesus Christ as your personal savior, or fondle a rosary during the interview, don’t expect a job at a prestige firm.
Values. This is the trickiest test, because the ruling class is constantly changing its shibboleths—in order to distinguish true members of the inner circle from vulgar impostors who are trying to break into the elite. A decade ago, as a member of the American overclass you could get away with saying, along with Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton, “I believe that marriage is between a man and a woman, but I strongly support civil unions for gay men and lesbians.” In 2020 you are expected to say, “I strongly support trans rights.” You will flunk the interview if you start going on about civil unions.
More and more Americans are figuring out that “wokeness” functions in the new, centralized American elite as a device to exclude working-class Americans of all races, along with backward remnants of the old regional elites. In effect, the new national oligarchy changes the codes and the passwords every six months or so, and notifies its members through the universities and the prestige media and Twitter. America’s working-class majority of all races pays far less attention than the elite to the media, and is highly unlikely to have a kid at Harvard or Yale to clue them in. And non-college-educated Americans spend very little time on Facebook and Twitter, the latter of which they are unlikely to be able to identify—which, among other things, proves the idiocy of the “Russiagate” theory that Vladimir Putin brainwashed white working-class Americans into voting for Trump by memes in social media which they are the least likely American voters to see.
Constantly replacing old terms with new terms known only to the oligarchs is a brilliant strategy of social exclusion. The rationale is supposed to be that this shows greater respect for particular groups. But there was no grassroots working-class movement among Black Americans demanding the use of “enslaved persons” instead of “slaves” and the overwhelming majority of Americans of Latin American descent—a wildly homogenizing category created by the U.S. Census Bureau—reject the weird term “Latinx.” Woke speech is simply a ruling-class dialect, which must be updated frequently to keep the lower orders from breaking the code and successfully imitating their betters.
Mrs. Astor would approve.

headcanon meme - dating edition ! zeo / what is you is me verse ~
where they first met and how - they’ve known each other their entire lives ; their parents were friends, their grandparents were friends, there was never a chance for them not to meet. as for when they became actual friends, it was probably in grade school when zelda & avery would bully him into hanging out with them ( and zelda would dare avery to kiss him before going “no I’M going to kiss him he’s MY prince!!!” )
how long their ‘flirting’ phase was before feelings got involved - zelda has known she’s been in love with leo since the third grade, when they were ice skating in central park and he helped her up when she fell down. as for when leo discovered it, it probably wasn’t until zelda kissed him for the first time and he went ‘oh damn. yeah, okay.’ because he’s an idiot.
who fell for who first ( if applicable ) - definitely zelda. she’s a hopeless romantic and she spent their early years both mocking him endlessly and flirting with him shamelessly. she just couldn’t figure out how he didn’t know they were totally MFEO.
where their first date was and what it was like - their first Real Date was something leo probably panicked over a lot. they’ve hung out their entire life but when does it count as a date now ???? we go to the zoo is that a date ?? we went to tiffany’s is that a date ??? but they both count their first real date as a movie at the angelika and eating at a shitty diner in midtown they’d normally never get caught dead in where they talked for hours  and a demure kiss at the door of her apartment building, it was the cliche date zelda always wanted and never knew how to ask for.
who asks who out and how ( with a sign? spelled out on a cake? just a simple ‘will you go out with me’? ) - zelda and avery attempted to tank his date to cotillion by being naked in a hot tub and making out in an attempt to seduce him. except then avery chickened out and went to kiss someone else to act like it was nbd she just made out with her best friend and zelda was like my time has come. after that he was her Boyfriend and no one else was allowed to touch him again.
who proposes first - oh boy that would have to come waaaaay down the road. like, after college when all three of them are in the city again. avery and zelda have been trying to figure out what the Fuck they’re doing, and leo would have to be like “why can’t i just have both of you” and it would be super confusing. zelda definitely talks about it the most - in the end, they’d probably decide on “ this is my wife zelda, and her girlfriend avery who sometimes we have a threesome with so i don’t feel left out “
if they keep / kept their relationship secret or let everyone know right away  - if it wasn’t tacky, zelda would have put a billboard up in times square.
where the proposal happens and how ( kiss cam at a baseball game? on a hillside surrounded by ducks? at a disney park? ) - zelda has planned her proposal since she was thirteen. the ring was picked out at harry winston and she knew exactly what she wanted. leo and avery take no part of this because the thing they both know she likes most about both of them is their spontaneity. so on a vacation to visit her dad in france, leo proposes at the vineyard during a small, intimate party - enough attention for her to feel like all eyes are on her, but small enough that she feels its exclusive and not broadcast to everyone until she’s ready to announce it.
if they adopt any pets together - zelda has a cat, but when they’re in their 20s living together, they definitely have her cat and leo just walks home with a dog one day. “it was following me.”
who’s more dominant - zelda 100% because she is Bossy and likes things a certain way. but leo can surprise her and she loves when he makes a decision or stands up for her or tries to boss her around. she thinks its cute.
where their first kiss was and what it was like - instead of their first kiss ( because, duh, already talked abt ) lets talk about their first kiss when they get back together after the avery drama comes out - they spend most of senior year broken up and they’ve both missed each other the entire time despite neither of them acknowledging it but she’s a big sister again ( her mother has a fucking baby i swear this is a real plot in the books ) and she looks so happy and light and he hasn’t seen her like that in forever and so he just goes for it and it’s the first time he’s really initiated things between them and it Feels Perfect but it’s familiar and warm and it’s when zelda finally loses her virginity
if they have any matching couples stuff ( mugs? sweaters? pillowcases? ) - pLEASE matching yale sweatshirts !!!!! even when he ends up going somewhere else ( brown ? HARVARD imagine a harvard!leo and yale!zelda the tension ) she still makes him wear the yale hoodie all the time at the house because the navy looks Very Good On Him
how into pda they are - Image Is Everything so quick kisses and hand holding and hugging is acceptable but she is Not about to let him grope her in public. that being said she’s also an attention whore and an exhibitionist so there are times in college / etc where she lets him get handsy in clubs or bars because she loves it.
who holds the umbrella when it rains - lmao leo obviously. as if zelda isn’t busy with her bag and her phone. leo ! my hair ! hold the umbrella straighter !!!
where their usual ‘date spot’ is ( if applicable ) - they go to various restaurants and bars, but they spend most of their time in central park. it’s right there, and zelda loves how romantic it can be ( if you ignore the tourists, pigeons, and hot dog vendors ).
who’s more protective - zelda would think she is, but leo does a lot to protect her. he knows how to distract her and make her relax and when people talk shit about her or gossip about her he’s usually the first to defend her.
how long it is before they sleep together ( can be as in ‘had sex’ or as in ‘shared a bed’ ) - they’ve been sharing a bed since they were like eight on random sleepovers, and it never really meant anything until they were dating. but she’s a ball of insecurity, even if she doesn’t show it, and doesn’t sleep with him until right before their high school graduations.
if they argue about anything - they argue about everything. or, zelda argues and leo just thinks about when he can get stoned again. the crux of most of their problems is really avery - she thinks he’s in love with her ( he is, a little ) but he also thinks zelda puts avery first ( she does, usually ) but instead they fight about things like where to get dinner or why he’s not listening to her
who leaves more marks ( lipstick, hickeys, scratchmarks etc. ) - lmao zelda of course. leo is Hers and she will let the world know. this makes him leaving his mark on her ( hickeys and scratches sometimes, usually not until college ) even sexier.
who steals whose clothes and how often - zelda has an entire drawer of his clothes at her house. she has for years. she wears them to bed because they’re comfy and smell like him. when he stays over he loves to see it. he has definitely accidentally put on her sweatshirts sometimes in a rush, though. she thinks its cute.
how they cuddle ( spooning? facing each other? ) - if they’re sleeping, they usually start spooning ( zelda is the little spoon, obviously ) but they’ll spread out throughout the night and sometimes they wake up with him as the little spoon. if they’re just on the couch or the bed watching tv or something she usually rests her head on his chest or shoulder so he plays with her hair, or vice versa. they’re very physical and touchy.
what their favourite nonsexual activity is - leo loves sailing, so they go out and do that whenever they can during the summer. but despite zelda’s constant demand to be Seen, they really just love quiet nights in with take out and an old movie playing.
how long they stay mad at each other - zelda will hold a grudge forever. leo has never understood this concept. it confuses him and he buys her a present so she’s not mad anymore. it almost always works. unless he sleeps with her best friend and keeps it from her for a year, y’know.
what their usual coffee / tea orders are - caffeine makes leo jittery, and while her friends have all these complex ‘girly’ orders, she just likes coffee, one sugar, splash of milk. sometimes at night she’ll drink some herbal tea to help her sleep.
if they ever have any children together - zelda has had the Dream of children since they were kids, and in the end the three of them end up with twins - it’s a strange parenting system they have with all three of them, but they make it work. besides, leo is never more grateful for avery’s partnership in their throuple than a pregnant zelda. can you even imagine.
if they have any special pet names for each other - typical cliche things - babe, sweetie, baby. zelda and avery call each other ‘z’ and ‘a’ and leo likes to think of himself as the bookmark in the middle of the bookcase ( get it. a - l - z ? its cute. ) but they don’t usually have anything too unique.
if they ever split up and / or get back together - once a week ? jk. they’re pretty stable until avery comes back from boarding school, and then they break up for most of the year. they get back together before graduation just to break up a few weeks alter, and college is a mess of ‘i love you / i hate you’ and trying to figure out avery’s place within the three of them before they all collectively figure out their shit in their 20s.
what their shared living space is like ( messy? clean? what kind of decor? ) - very clean, but not like, super organized crazy. zelda likes things picked up and clean ( and they have maids, obviously ) but she doesn’t like, color code her wardrobe. they’d hire an interior designer when they got their own place, but it would be a little chaotic like they all are - a crazy colorful bedroom but a muted living room, a bright vibrant kitchen and a dark bathroom. a mixture of all three of them all over the place.
what their first christmas / hanukkah / etc as a couple was like - they always went to see the nutcracker as kids, and once they’re dating, they start going Together as a date. they split cigarettes during intermission and walk home through the snow together. they pick out a gift to exchange on christmas eve if they’re in the city, or before they’re forced to separate if they have to go with their family. in college, she spends a winter break with him in maine, and once they’re old enough to do their own holidays, they throw huge parties a couple days before to celebrate with everyone they care about before the three of them have their own, quiet holiday.
what their names are in each other’s phones - if leo has it as anything other than ‘zelda’ he’d never find her, but she does force a heart emoji on there. she likes her phone organized correctly, so he’s also labeled ‘leo’ but it does have a matching heart emoji. their groupchat name, however, changes based on zeldas mood and if she’s angry or enamored with them. sometimes she deletes it entirely and that’s when it’s time to go to tiffanys.
if they have any ‘couple traditions’ ( buying a new mug for their collection every year? baking every friday evening? ) - after he discovers the heart in his sweater, there’s small exchanges of little trinkets like that. they’re definitely into present giving - it’s the way they were both raised to show love - and they have annual traditions ( the nutcracker, sailing, etc. ) but most of their habits are just engrained in them from their own environments.
who falls asleep first and who wakes up first - leo falls asleep if you let him sit still too long and zelda has never heard of sleeping.
who’s the big spoon / little spoon - both of them at any point in time - it’s really just a matter of who’s more emotionally unstable at the moment.
who hogs the bathroom - zelda has a thousand beauty and hair supplies and leo’s just like ‘guess ill go use the guest bathroom then’
who kills the spiders / takes them outside - the maid, obviously.

D*CTV/ARR*WVERSE VERSE**
originally from earth - 2, mike chang lives in the small town of lima, ohio. all is normal, relatively speaking, considering he’s part of a prize-winning glee club set to win it all by the time he reached senior year, and at the end of his junior year, starts making his rounds around the country on various college visits. there’s the standards; harvard, yale, princeton, the usual that his father had been grooming him to attend since he knew what college was, but there also were a few wildcard universities he ventured off to visit alone, looking into julliard, nyada, and ithica in new york, the joffrey in chicago, and a few others out west in california.
he ended up attending the joffrey, a severe disappointment to his father for pursuing dance instead of law or neuroscience, and during his sophomore year, he participates in a sort of campus switch program, sending him to a partner conservatory in california for his fall semester.
it was a layover and plane switch in missouri mixed with a cancelled and rescheduled flight for two days later while on his way back to ohio for the holiday season that put him in position for a perfect storm of events.
december 10, 2013 :
flight from california to ohio with a layover and flight transfer in missouri.
layover prolonged and flights cancelled due to atmospheric changes potentially indicating severe snow storms
mike stays overnight near the airport in case a flight opened up in the night
december 11, 2013 :
confirmation that flights won’t be taking off for another two days just to be safe considering the strange atmospheric changes still lingering
mike ventures off into the nearest city in search of something to do for the next couple days ; central city
s.t.a.r. labs particle accelerator explodes, sending dark matter throughout the city
mike is within the range of the first wave of dark matter, having gotten a hotel room in the city for the two nights he would be in the state, having been practicing a few new dance moves he had learned during his semester in california before turning his attention to an action movie playing on the room’s tv
december 12, 2013
mike begins to feel ill, and heads to the nearest doctor’s office
is the victim of an attempted mugging, but somehow manages to defend himself with unknown combat knowledge that is eerily similar to some of the fighting moves he had seen in the movie he had watched the night before
gets to the doctor and is only diagnosed with a small bout of allergies, free to fly
learns that all flights within a certain radius of central city (including the airport he had flown into and would be flying out of) had been cancelled until further notice due to the s.t.a.r. labs explosion
mike then learns of said explosion, having not paid attention to the news within the last eighteen hours
the first appearance of meta-humans comes to light
it’s a few days later that mike gets back to lima, barely making it home in time for christmas, but he still can’t get central city out of his mind, especially as time goes on and he returns to school, suddenly able to pick up everything demonstrated to them with only one time watching the combination. months pass, and as more news breaks about meta-humans, mike looks into them more and more, learning of what was going on in central city with zoom and the flash, the meta-humans attacking more and more around the country, and also looking more into his own ‘condition’, leading him back to central city (though warily due to zoom’s dominating presence in the city) to find answers.
while searching for answers, mike finds himself accidentally traveling through a multiverse breach, ending up on earth - 1, though also, at first, thinking he’d died and this was his own type of purgatory. instead of opting to return to his earth, the younger meta-human opts to instead use this as an opportunity to learn more about his abilities, begging those at the earth - 1 s.t.a.r. labs to help him while also dealing with their own problems.
meta-human abilities :
adaptive muscle memory
can copy any/all movements/actions after seeing it performed once, including acrobatics, martial arts, and other physical stunts. With these skills, they can become masters and incredible at what they do, by combining what several forms and movements in rhythmic motions instead of using the same thing over.
can copy how a person aims, giving themselves incredible marksmanship; however, if they wanted to use certain weapons, they would have to watch a person fire that weapon in order to be able to copy it (such as how to fire a rifle, as opposed to how to fire a bow, or how to throw knives or darts)
Must be able to sense (usually see) what they want to mimic.
Won't have access to any skills/abilities they don't sense, so they could miss vital abilities. For example, gaining skill to high-dive without the skill to swim.
adaptive temporary power replication
temporarily able to replicate and use another’s powers/abilities/mutations, usually restricted to, at max, one hour after exposure
does not gain knowledge on proper use of powers, but can use adaptive muscle memory if he has seen the power/ability/mutation used before
must be exposed to power/ability/mutation either through touching an individual or experiencing the power/ability/mutation firsthand (i.e. being exposed to speed force by a speedster)
**gonna be honest....most of the time i have no idea what’s going on in arr*wverse anymore since i need to catch up but i’m here and trying my hardest. can establish a full timeline to fit into anywhere in the current arr*wverse timeline if need be.

wrapping up the semester
today we had our final exam, and thus, the summer semester has come to a close! it feels insane that it’s already over; as usual, at the end it feels like yesterday i just started class.
i’m not sure whether i prefer korean class at yale or the class i took here at snu. snu’s professors are certainly very good: they’re all very well-versed in the material and run class incredibly smoothly. there’s rarely a moment of downtime (outside of break time). that is, as soon as one activity ends, the teacher cleanly and quickly transitions to the next.
although this could sound exhausting, i think in general class is never too tiring; since most of the activities are at least somewhat interesting, it’s not often boring. primarily, i found level 2 (2 급) to focus a lot on basic conversational speaking skills, both in the activities we performed and in the content that we learned--most grammar was centered around either deeper conversation topics like change, development, personalities, and such, or situational content like how to look for a house at a 부동산 (realtor), how to find a lost item at the metro, etc.
in that way, i really liked snu class because it was extremely practical. i wouldn’t have been able to get a haircut without the vocab and grammar i had learned in class, for example. moreover, since you’re relatively constantly speaking with classmates, in general i felt like there’s a great learning environment and everyone is encouraging.
the curriculum includes 2 presentations over the course of the semester, one before and after midterm. in level 2, they are about your hobbies and your lifestyle in korea. these presentations end up being around 5-10 minutes, and must be memorized (and you are encouraged to make an accompanying powerpoint). memorizing the speech isn’t necessarily too demanding, but since you also must answer questions from classmates and your professor after the presentation, this really helps you think on your feet. i actually ended up enjoying this part of class a lot more than i thought i would. in addition, every couple of weeks you have to write a one-page essay--really, these are very short essays that i usually wrote in 10 minutes or less. personally, i wish they required we write more, as i never felt it was especially effective practice.
the exams were extremely easy. they consist of two parts: on the first day, you take a ~3 hour written exam, which has reading, writing, and listening parts. all of these parts are nearly identical to what you practice in class on “review” days. i found that with doing the practice test and going over the extra vocab that’s not on it, you don’t have to study too much to ace the written tests.
the spoken exam is also relatively straightforward, although you don’t practice it as explicitly in class. it consists of a pronunciation test, an interview question where you have to respond in 5+ sentences, storytelling, a roleplay with the teacher interviewing you, and q&a using a grammar they tell you. especially if you get to do the snu buddy program, you will be plenty proficient in spoken korean to do very well on these without too much practice. in fact, in my opinion, studying by memorizing answers to the potential questions is counterproductive--being able to produce them more off the top of your head is more genuine mastery of speaking.
all in all, i’d recommend snu’s program! i think i’ll make another post covering the non-academic side of things (social life, clubs, etc.), but i was very pleased with the academic experience overall. the one thing i would say is for a motivated student coming out of yale l2, you should try to take level 3 at snu. you will have to put in a non-significant amount of extra work to catch up, for sure, but level 2 is very much “coastable” for those who did well in l2 at yale.
anyway, here are some posts from the past week, from when i wasn’t studying (ha, ha):
