Cloud and Tifa's Relationship and What it Means to Final Fantasy VII
Tumblr media
It's no secret that Final Fantasy VII is a popular game, it always has been ever since its release in 1997. At the centre of this classic is our protagonist, Cloud Strife, a character so famous that even someone who's never played the game would recognise. With his large sword and handsome character, Cloud is one of the most iconic video game characters of all time, even making guest appearances in games such as Kingdom Hearts and Man at Arms creating a replica of his iconic Buster Sword.
Then there is the heroine of the game, a woman called Tifa Lockhart who is equally if not more popular than Cloud himself. However, if it weren't for her role in the story, there would be no Cloud and therefore no Final Fantasy VII.
Within a story, the protagonist is the leading character, the one whom the audience stays with from dawn until dusk, and none in the narrative of Final Fantasy VII fits that description better than Cloud Strife. After all, he is the character you play as for the majority of the game, but behind his status as protagonist is Tifa Lockhart, the heroine of the game without whom, Cloud would not be whom we all know and love. For it is she whom Cloud sets out to impress by travelling to Midgar to become a SOLDIER First Class, a fact slightly altered under the water tower where they first made a vow so sacred only they ever knew about it - a night under a stary sky. It was there that Cloud made his promise to Tifa that if she were ever in the face of danger, he would come to her rescue, put upon him by the woman whom he'd been in love with from a young age. That night, Tifa realised she was in love with this boy who presented himself as being ordinary, just like any other boy his age, the kind of love that makes you want to be by one's side for eternity.
Years later, unbeknownst to Tifa, that promise was fulfilled, when Sephiroth, the man Cloud once looked upon as a hero betrayed the village of Nibelheim, burning it to the ground in a rage of violent anger. They became all they had left of their childhood and thus is the reason only Tifa could awaken Cloud from his comatose state. Had it not been for Cloud, Tifa wouldn't have survived Nibelheim, and had it not been for Tifa, Cloud would have been comatose forever, and therefore the world would have ended had neither of these events taken place. Cloud is the only one who can defeat Sephiroth and in turn, help save the planet, therefore Tifa is important to him.
Now, the lifestream sequence brings to light the love Cloud harbours for Tifa. By allowing her to explore his subconscious, Cloud is making himself completely vulnerable. Remember, your subconscious is home to your deepest darkest secrets so normally, you wouldn't want anyone exploring it, so for Cloud to allow Tifa to explore his own is a big deal, showing the amount of trust he has for Tifa. Trust is an important part of any relationship, especially a romantic one, and the trust Cloud shows for Tifa is far greater than what a child could show their parent (I, for one, would never allow my parents to explore my subconscious). Within the lifestream sequence, we learn many things about Cloud, including of course, his motivation for joining SOLDIER - Tifa. Ever since the accident at Mt. Nibel when he and Tifa were eight and nine, Cloud has wanted to better himself for Tifa, to be capable of saving her, hence his motives for joining SOLDIER, he wanted her to notice him. Therefore, if Tifa is removed, you have no Final Fantasy VII, because Cloud's story is built upon Tifa, Tifa is his motive, and Tifa is the reason he's the character we all know and love: Cloud Strife, the boy from Nibelheim who defeated the great Sephiroth and saved the world of Gaia. None of this would have been the case without Tifa Lockhart, his childhood friend and the only one capable of salvaging Cloud from the darkness of his mind.
Without Tifa, there is no Cloud, therefore to say something such as 'Cloud's love interest is player choice' or 'Cloud's in love with Aerith' is to undermine the meaning of his character, and what she means to him. Cloud and Tifa have a beautiful romance and if removed, there would be no story, as it is vital to weaving it. This is, in fact, part of what makes it so beautiful, as well as the fact that it's the best relationship you could have whilst still being realistic.
There are many reasons people love Final Fantasy VII, but it wouldn't be the story we all know and love today were it not for the romance of Cloud and Tifa.

it was mentioned that she likes taking showers to cool off...maybe one of the reasons she likes it so much is because it's grounding for her (since they never had showers in nibelheim) and the scent of soap blocks out the smell
thinking about how many nights it took for tifa to actually not have a nightmare about burning nibelheim. how did she ever stop seeing the flames and smelling burning flesh?
...or perhaps she never did.

one thing I hate about the resurgence of the atla fandom is the twitter culture of comparing characters' traumas in which you'll question if people even truly watched the show
if we want to be objective, the title is literally The Last Airbender, Aang suffered from being the last survivor of an extinct nation (none of which was his fault, he was 12 when he ran away and would have died along with the nomads had he stayed), having to shoulder the weight of restoring said nation + saving the world–mind you, war isn't something that's easy to put a stop to, especially if the conquering nation is powerful af.
Katara and Sokka suffered losing their people with each raid; they didn't HAVE their father around, Hakoda literally left to fight in the war and left Sokka to be the man of the village. Katara lived in constant fear of being found out as the last waterbender, she watched her mother die before her eyes, she had to step up to a motherly role at a very young age. Their village is literally defenseless.
I don't see how Zuko's suffering (while it is completely valid!) should be put above theirs. When Ursa left, he had Iroh. He was the crown prince. He was around 13 when he got scarred and banished, but he wasn't alone. He had Iroh and Fire Nation soldiers (in the show, the 41st division) with him. I'm not discounting how much pain Zuko went through–being physically and mentally scarred by your own father and banished from your home is awful. That's what made him such a compelling antagonist in the first place, and why his redemption arc was so satisfying.
But to compare this to Aang, who literally has nowhere to return to, and Katara/Sokka whose village is barely holding up? Zuko is still on the side of the colonizers, he still benefited from that superiority even if he had more compassion and capacity for goodness. Aang, Katara and Sokka are the actual victims on the other side of the war, the ones whose nations are being conquered

I was rlly confused by that scene cause I couldn't tell if they meant it as a fantasy or an actual thing (which by the show's timeline didn't seem likely that's why I said implied). I'm not saying what Pekka Rollins said was what the relationship was about; yes, Matthias had horny thoughts about Nina but the show went on a direction that had Pekka trying to push Matthias' buttons by exposing his temptations. I just disliked the idea that, because they didn't emphasize the part that Nina saved him, in a way his physical attraction to her was given more focus
I'm not saying Matthias never had any sexual attraction towards Nina, I personally just wish the emotional connection was just as showcased
obviously this is all nitpicky cause I know the show didn't have time to fully flesh out Nina and Matthias' conflict + their thoughts
honestly I really hated that they made helnik a lot more sexual in the show, with the implied sex and Pekka Rollins telling Matthias in Hellgate that it's impossible he was never tempted by anything, something about "what's between a lovers' legs"
like it makes it seem that Matthias was initially only physically attracted to Nina when it was her way of speaking, self-confidence and compassion (for saving him) that made him fall for her :/ her showing these human traits made him finally "see" Grisha as humans, not witches

I am so so so so so TIRED to see people fatshaming two perfectly healthy girls because they have round faces. It’s disgusting.
The actresses of Mai and Azula are on point for their roles. Hell, if they were chosen there must be a reason, it’s not like there’s no Asian actresses out there they could choose from.
People can’t accept that Azula can have a characterization beyond “crazy and sadist sicko”. She’s a perfectionist. She’s an asset to her father. She’s jealous of Zuko’s birthright and of how it might take what she has away. Those are things that OG Azula too had. The only difference is that we actually see it in season one and have a background on her, rather than writing it in a rant. And what has been added only makes her a more complex character, given the change in the family dynamic as well.
And Mai? The actress is talented, she delivers a good Mai, and does justice to the character. She’s 17 and at the beginning of her career, of course it won’t be perfect. She gets to grow. Thing is, you guys won’t let her, because a square jaw scares you so flipping bad that you feel the need to shame her for it.
Everyone is a body positivity advocate until a girl with a rounder face shape is cast as a character in a live action you are NOT forced to watch? Seriously?
I’ve seen so many people on the internet calling them all sort of names, fatshaming them, insulting their work without even focusing on the acting. And I’m like, what’s to fatshame there? Let me tell you: nothing.
If I have to put it through your thick head like this, so be it. Even though I hate talking about and comparing bodies.
This below is a picture of Azula’s actress.
Tumblr media
She has the face card, she has the jawline, and she has a fit, enviable body. And you still have the audacity to “fat-shame” her?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
These two pictures are in costume. Again, face card and an enviable body. She even has the expression for Azula. You see a girl with a rounder shape of face and will automatically go “no she’s too cute to be Azula!!” Dude. No. When she will actually deliver as the crazy girl we know, she will devour. She will, and you all will switch back because that’s what you are, slimy switchers.
And now, onto Mai’s actress, a very beautiful girl with talent and looks. She is literally so pretty, and you dare hate on her? You dare shame her for how she looks? From what I’ve heard she’s a minor, too, so this makes you 100000% more slimy and undeserving of any sympathy in my book.
This is her, this is the girl.
Tumblr media
She’s literally so pretty. Maybe she hasn’t got the same facial structure of Mai, but she delivered all her lines she had in the little screen time and with the discutibile scenes she was given. She was good. But you see a square jaw, a rounder shape of face, and are immediately triggered.
And you can’t even use the stupid argument of “she’s fat”, because this is literally her.
Tumblr media
A very normal, very healthy young woman. Not as skinny as OG Mai? So what? She’s still a fricking thin girl. Nowhere as “fat” as you haters make her to be.
I shouldn’t have to explain common sense and basic decency to grown adults, and yet here we are.
This is honestly so frustrating. In the year of 2024 you can’t possibly justify insulting girls like this, with no shame. It’s absolutely idiotic and shows very a big lack of brain cells. I see you, haters, behind your device, with your insecurities and shame for yourself, laughing at two girls who made it farther than you ever will. You can critique the acting once you’ve seen it in full potential. Until then, shut your tramp up. This is very small dick energy of you.
I don’t see why I should treat you with kindness when you are so eager to make this kind of jokes about pretty and in shape girls you are very obviously jealous of. Go touch some grass, incels.

I'm tired of people defining Aang as this boring little vanilla guy. Aang helped Katara destroy a factory. He participated in Toph's scams. He shrugged off Katara's theft of the waterbending scroll and heartily laughed at her jokes about it. He was delighted by the Painted Lady ruse. He mastered airbending at twelve and the avatar state at thirteen. He snooped around the old ship after Katara said it was booby trapped and dared her to follow and stepped up to take the blame when it went badly and then surrendered himself to protect the village because he knew he could hand everyone on that ship their asses and escape. He outright lied to two communities that had been bickering for a century to get them to stop. He egged on Katara when she decided to throw hands with Pakku. He wants to ride every big animal in the world ("they don't like being ridden but that's what makes it fun" -unhinged take). He has sick burns for everyone which are doubly funny because they're almost always unintended as such. He threw a clandestine dance party in the nation that banned dancing and thought he was dead and wanted him dead. Before that he corrected and argued with teachers, beat a bully without lifting a finger and then brought his teenage friends to pose as his parents. The whole Bonzu Pippipadaleopsicopolis the Third thing. The being idiots with Sokka in Ba Sing Se thing with the bowing and the busboys disguises. He rightfully asked "what's cosmic power compared to a girl". Let's add all the badass stuff he does as a bender and as the Avatar up to and including energybending and the conversation with Koh the Face Stealer. That time in The Chase when he finished the fur trail and then decided to just sit down, sleep deprived, to wait and face whoever it was chasing them. Aang is one of the funniest and coolest characters I've ever seen and he deserves more respect. Absolutely unhinged kid with immense powers and the world is lucky he's goofy and has a good heart.

Netflix Avatar writers if you're reading these here's some things you might want (need) to improve on in the next two seasons!
The dialogue. Please just use dialogue from the original show or improve on yours 'cause the audience does not need to be reminded of what the characters are going through with EVERY line they have, subtlety is key and some of the dialogue actually works! Some. Most of it does the characters a disservice
speaking of characters, you have the hang of Zuko and Iroh and Aang just needs to be more avoidant, but Sokka could benefit from allowing Ian to joke around and act like himself, Kiawentiio as Katara as well. Maybe direct them to be more expressive in their facials, contort their expressions more and move their eyebrows (I notice this is a thing in both Gordon and Dallas' acting styles and it's actually an effective way to translate facials from the cartoon)
Let Katara be both motherly and petty!!! soft introvert Katara is cute but like someone said, her anger is so central to her character and for the eventual Southern Raiders arc to work, she needs to BE angry and passionate! WRITE her that way!
Avoid another mishmash of storylines like the Omashu/Mechanist/Jet arc and the Hei Bai/Roku/Blue Spirit arc, it drags on too long. Unless it can be worked into a more coherent and well paced storyline, please, don't
fix your depiction of the spirit world please don't make it like Korra where everything is bright and vivid, Aang's Spirit World reflected the state of the world in the middle of war and that's why everything was under saturated and murky
Make Azula calmer and sneakier, not openly expressive. Again, this isn't the actor's fault, it's how she's written!
Less exposition more visuals
and that's about it unless people have things to add, thank you

people say katara was forced into being attracted to aang because of the fortuneteller episode but like,,, the message of that episode is that though fortunes may come true it's still up to the person to make their way to it? they literally reshaped the clouds together = reshaped their fortunes to get the outcome they wanted, it was their doing whether they believed the fortuneteller or not
a lot of the arguments against this ship are a result of lack of context and comprehension tbh
yes i'm back on the kataang train this was my otp back at fourteen years old

as an og Suki fangirl am i upset over what they did to Suki's character in the live action? tbh not really (also I noticed they kind of switched her and Yue's demeanors but not totally)? Idk I love girlfailure Suki fsr, I love her hopeless attempt at flirting, the contrast between her skills as a warrior vs. at being a normal teenage girl but I do feel like the episode was really rushed and so was their development
I feel like part of it was the showrunners not knowing if they could have a second season so they crammed some stuff in the first, but now that 2 and 3 have been greenlit, hopefully they'll listen to the criticism and adjust the story and characters as needed
also. they need a better dialogue writer
