we need more language barriers in whump because it's so fucking good no matter if you use it for whumper and whumpee or whumpee and caretaker or especially carewhumper and whumpee or any combination!!!!
Whumpee not being able to know what the fuck is going on no matter how many times they ask, only being manhandled into various situations because they don't understand how to comply with whatever is being told to them (gently or not is up to you >:3c)
Having to rely on tones and facial expressions to get a vague sense of what the other person is trying to get across, despite all the repetition of sounds and slow pronunciations and childish gesturing
Those little moments where a word just finally clicks for someone, the one piece of common ground, even if they can't fully repeat it back due to an accent that maybe earns them an amused chuckle or a scowl
Endless frustration and exploding so many pent up feelings for a rant that falls on deaf ears, because why is this so hard to comprehend, why can't you just understand my words, why do I feel like such a fucking idiot??? And what do they get in return? Silence...or more foreign gibberish.
Not bothering to keep quiet about their thoughts, agreeable or otherwise, vulgar or polite -- what does it matter? No one is going to understand a lick of it, they can say whatever the hell they want (unless maybe someone does catch a couple words or phrases hmmm)
Whumpers using sweet coos and nice smiles while saying the most awful shit. Caretakers being endlessly patient in trying to foster some kind of trust and feasible communication. Carewhumpers being stern and hands on because there's no time to waste in getting Whumpee to grasp what they need from them.
The longer they're in each others company, the more quirks and micro expressions they start to pick up, long before they ever fully understand a word of what's being said, including when someone is lying or when a nerve has been struck
Realizing which words mean "bad thing" and which words mean "good thing"

Short DP X DC Prompts #98
Danny is stuck in timey shenanigans in the Ghost Zone where he is gone for so long he kinda sorta forgot how to be human.
Batman observes this boy who moved as if he was trying to imitate human anatomy the best he could but his limbs moved just a tad too much out of socket and his movements were jerky and unnatural.
The boy was evidently scared. He may be a threat and lash out but be still is a frightened child.
Danny watches as the man of darkness and shadow slowly crouches down and very gently offers his hand out to Danny. His entire body language is carefully crafted and displays “calm. trust. compassion.”. The man slowly and calmly says words to him in a deep baritone but Danny has long forgotten English.
Danny very slowly uncurls himself from the too long limbed ball he wrapped himself in and very slowly grabbed the masked man’s hand.
Batman froze as the ghost boy touched his hand. the sensation of plain wrongness flooded him and the strange boy’s eyes started to glow even brighter. He could hear the other League members cry out and ask him if he’s alright as he suddenly is bombarded with a wave of emotions and memories.
Batman barley manages to stop himself from stumbling back from the intense wave of fear and confusion and hope from this boy. He promises himself that he will do anything In his power to keep this kid safe.

Okay now imagine this:
Xiao successfully breeds you and you're forced to mother his child(ren). The child(ren), surrounded by parents who speak two different languages, will undoubtedly learn both at the same time. Wouldn't that sort of break the language barrier?
Oh, absolutely not. Xiao already thought this through, what's worse than having a 'lover' you can't communicate with? Having a child that you can't talk to either. He'll make sure the child can't speak English. Besides you're only really there to feed them, bathe them and other motherly things. He doesn't see why you have to talk to them, besides he knows how crushed you must feel not being able to talk to them. Especially if you still haven't developed Stockholm syndrome. However if the child does learn some English he will not shy away from separating the two of you. Same thing goes for if you have more than just one. By separating I mean he'll lock you up in one room and the child can go to the others and if that still doesn't work, sending the child to a boarding school across Teyvat isn't that big of a deal. He'll just make you have another one. 😉!

How do you best depict a language barrier? I have a character who doesn't understand much English and speaks even less, but most of the others don't understand a word of Japanese, which is what she speaks.
Communication is a cornerstone of any good characterisation. But for some characters there may be elements that block traditionally clear communication, and language barriers are just one example of that. Every interaction is filled with potential misunderstandings or revelations of clarity. Let’s explore how to bring language barriers to life in your writing, showing the struggles and triumphs that come with characters trying to connect across language and culture.
Understand the role of language in your story
Consider the cultural and geographical context of your characters.
Explore the historical ties or conflicts that might have led to the language differences.
Determine the significance of the language barrier to the plot—is it an obstacle, a source of conflict, or a way to deepen character relationships?
How can you use language to illustrate the power dynamics between characters?
What is the emotional impact of miscommunication on all your characters?
Why do you want to write about language barriers? If it’s just for the sake of a miscommunication trope, consider if there’s perhaps a better way for you to achieve the same aim.
Have you taken the time to understand the culture whose language you are trying to represent?
Characterisation through language
Incorporate a mix of languages or dialects to enrich the authenticity of the setting and the characters’ experiences.
Pay attention to the non-verbal communication cues that can transcend language barriers, such as body language and facial expressions.
Respectfully create characters with varying degrees of proficiency in the language they’re learning or interacting with.
Use language as a way to show a character’s adaptability, intelligence, or stubbornness.
Let characters’ reactions to the language barrier drive their development throughout the story.
Consider how language barriers may influence a character’s inner thoughts and how they perceive the world around them.
The mechanics of writing dialogue
Don’t overuse accents or continually spell them out. Use description to signal a character’s struggle instead of phonetically writing it.
Suggest broken language skills by using simple words, or incorrect grammar, but don’t resort to stereotypes.
If you choose to write an accent phonetically, don’t repeat this for every line of dialogue. Use it once as an example, and then use description to give the sense of it moving forward.
Balance readability with authenticity—make sure the dialogue is understandable to your audience in a way that is still respectful to your character.
Foster immersion through context rather than a direct translation of foreign words which often don’t hold the same meaning. Using vocabulary that characters and readers can deduce from context strengthens the narrative and characterisation.
Present the characters’ linguistic progression realistically, showing their learning curve and how it affects their interactions.
Non-verbal communication
Emphasise body language, facial expressions, and gestures to show communication without spoken language.
Use context clues and the characters’ surroundings to help convey meaning.
Explore how misunderstandings can arise from non-verbal miscommunications, but also show when non-verbal communication helps clarify things that can’t be conveyed verbally.
Consider the situational context that might enhance or impede non-verbal understanding among characters. For example, in high-tension scenes, even subtle gestures can carry heavy meaning.
Acknowledge cultural variations in body language and educate readers subtly through the narrative.
Describe the physical environment as it can also influence the way characters use non-verbal communication—proximity, personal space, and even the weather can all play roles.
The emotional impact of language barriers
Show how characters find innovative ways to express themselves and connect with others.
Describe the frustration, isolation, or desperation that characters may feel when they can’t communicate.
Use the language barrier to create poignant moments of miscommunication and resolution.
Show how shared experiences can forge bonds that transcend words and even serve as a foundation for trust.
Explore the characters’ emotional journeys as they navigate through their inability to communicate. This can lead to a deeper understanding of each other over time, despite the initial hurdles.
Consider the long-term effects of language barriers on relationships and character psyche, both positive and negative.
Research and authenticity
Study the languages you are writing about, including their structure and common phrases. If you’re writing a fantasy language, then research common language structures on which to base your characters’ experiences.
Understand the culture tied to the language to avoid stereotyping and to provide richer detail. For real languages, do research, for fictional languages, work on some deep worldbuilding for authenticity.
If possible, talk to speakers of the language you’re writing about, or speak to folks who have experienced a similar language barrier more generally.
Seek feedback from native speakers or cultural experts to ensure accurate representation and to honour the community’s linguistic nuances.
Be mindful of the socio-political influences on language and communication, presenting these complexities through your characters’ interactions either through worldbuilding, or researching real-world etymology.

Enclosure Encounter
[Transformers Reversed First Contact AU. Your encounter with an unspecified bot held in an enclosure] Word count: 725 ------------------------------------------------------------- To not be heard. Imagine talking to someone and they don’t know that you were talking to them. Do you ever remember being distressed? Something had happened, your stress evident in the most readable wide eyes you have ever seen. Your movement hasty and you raise your voice to beg the person in front of you to do something. But the release of acknowledgement never came. Devoid of any reaction to your voice. Your distress was invisible to the person next to you. You were the unreadable one…
Looking at the light of the enclosure reflecting off the red railing in front of you. You watch your fist’s grip tighten around the railing from the memory. The metal to skin contact made an odd creaking noise that peaked above the catting crowd. The hums of accidental bumps and kids impatiently slapping the railing buzzing through your hands. The sight of the bot’s far off gaze and spent form returned that unpleasant memory. Clearly your mind is still hung up on something.
The early morning visit to this natural history museum exhibit was meant to be a last minute decision. But you had no clue that you'd got the luck of turning up here during feeding time.
A grinding noise was heard as the bot finally noticed its tray of mini pink energon cubes. It sat beside the tray. The whole set up having the energy of a regular person sitting at a cafe. Eating from a raised blocky table and sat on a cube for chair. The bot avoiding eye contact from all angles.
The bot began to slow its chewing. And looked in your general direction. “It’s going to freak out.” Murmured one voice. “Do you think it’s going to snap at us?” Another. There was excitement when the chewing stopped entirely. Energon crumbs on its face. The sight causing you to reach for your phone. *Click*
You glance at your phone screen before returning it to your bag. The bot’s optics dead centre with the lens of your camera. You felt the buzz of the crowd skip.
The lone bot that had its back against the corner of the enclosure got up and was walking towards your direction. “Is the glass capable to hold a bot like that back?” The thought whipped by. “There must be something more interesting to it behind me. It couldn’t have been because of me-.”
The bot sat down beside the glass. Closer than ever before. You stuck to your spot. As others stepped back. The bot had its tray of energon with it. And proceeded to break a pink chunk off and leave the share in front of you. “He’s sharing his food with me?”
Looking over the pink shimmer of the crumb of energon through the glass. And looking back up to the face of a bot taking their time calmly snacking next to you. You can’t help but let a smile slip. Before impulsively putting a hand over your mouth from the shock. Optics — giving you a wide eyed response. Puffing a sharp exhale. You grab something from your bag. Pulling out a chocolate bar, you break a row and place it on the small ledge outside of the enclosure glass. Then breaking a second row for yourself. The bot’s language as it leaned closer telling you it was intensely interested in what you were doing. With it flashing a smile back as it saw your acceptance of the gift and the gesture of giving something back in your own strange way.
They managed to find a way to socialise with one another. But with both sides finishing their last portions. You felt another tug as the bot relaxed leaning to the side you stood. With its regular glancing making sure you were still there next to him. You had to go now. Turning your back to the bot. The light of your familiarity guided his eyes through the crowd. And you left.
The two gifts, unable to be taken by either side of today’s wonderful exchange. Stayed together long after you and the bot lost sight of one another. As you gave that last, shy and real goodbye wave to the bot. Your hand seen above all else. Followed by a foolish sensation, causing you to dive into the hallway of the next room.

lets talk about language barriers for a hot minute, specifically between a caretaker and whumpee:
caretaker trying to convey that they’re not going to hurt whumpee
caretaker’s friends/team show up, and caretaker has to try to calm down a now-frightened whumpee that the newcomers won’t hurt them either (bonus points if there’s distrust between the two teams and caretaker’s friends are also freaked out)
caretaker has to leave to get supplies but whumpee thinks they’re leaving them to fend for themself
caretaker not able to talk whumpee through the painful process of stitches or setting a bone
whumpee trying to explain that they need something but caretaker just can’t for the life of them figure out what it is
trying to teach each other their respective languages to pass the time

This is gonna sound absolutely bonkers and freaky but bare with me. I always say like theres 3 types of Yanderes fr
1) you got the one that would rather cut their darling open and burrow inside of them (not literally but like figurative)
2) the type that would cut themselves open and would want darling to live inside of them
3) and finally the type that would sew darling to their side or whatever
I would think that Yves would be option 1 mainly because I feel like he would take great satisfaction in literally living inside of his darling, like the amount of things he could observe with hearing and feeling the bodily functions of his darling around him, would probably be the most succulent brain food to him. Like he’s living in his hyper fixation. Probably his own personal heaven when you think about it. Your post about Inside Out really solidified this for me.
Blanche would be option 2 or 3 mainly because his possessiveness. Like he doesn’t want darling to go anywhere that is outside of his home and finds the most happiness with being only being with his darling. His darling is his one and only true friend that he wants to keep forever and forever and prefers to isolate them within the house.
Leveret, we don’t know much about him but I wanna say he gives off option number 3. I feel like he likes to poke and prod at his darling physically so they would need to be whole next to him for him to properly do so 🤔
Cyprus and Monty also gives number 3.
Alien Cowboy Yan from Language Barrier gives 2. Mainly because Blanche kind of reminds me of him in terms of territorialness of it all. How he acts around those who are around his darling, always wanting his darling to be kept in the home and within arms reach as well.
I love your writings fr and sorry for my weird ramblings fr fr
ur weird ramblings highkey slaps and is a banger my dude, pls don't be shy ramble som more 🙏🙏🙏
yes you are right, Yves is having a field trip if he could just live inside you, to know how it feels and to see the world through your eyes. Like its his only wet dream and if he has a dream like that, he would wake up sobbing because he wanted it to be real so badly, a treasure trove of data all gone because it was only a dream
You're pretty accurate for Blanche too, he is protective and super possessive, although he does enjoy documenting your habits from time to time, but the most important thing to him is the bonding and relationship you and he share. and the fact that you are all his, he would rather cage you up, rob you of your free will and make you a personalityless zombie than let you be 100% free to see how you would react to certain circumstances on your own
Cyprus and Leveret does like poking fun at you, they would like to have you separate to them, they like seeing you all flustered up and shy, all cute and small. They don't want to control you entirely that you become a mere doll, but they don't want to stay in the shadows and observe either, they want a companion with their own thoughts n feelings and they like the thrill of 'taming' and owning you in a sense
Depending whether you're a dom or a sub in the relationship, Monty can be a lot of things
Like if you are a strong character that takes the lead in the bedroom like in it was only supposed to be a one-night stand, He would be territorial and tries to scare off any rivals, but ultimately he is seeking for your approval, you have a leash around him
if you are pretty weak in character like in Best and worst of Both worlds, Monty is still territorial and protective, but he assumes the role of someone who's leading the relationship, kind of trying to tie a leash around you but it isn't too tight, he would be pretty lax with rules and stuff, he is the type that thinks you could do no wrong because you are naive and shit, only thinking that the outside world is tainting you, so he needs to shield you from it while letting you enjoy your life
The cowboy yan 2718 is a mixture of type 2 and 3, yes he wants you to be in the house because that's where its the safest, but he would relent his strictness if you're acting out enough, prioritizing your happiness and safety more than anything else. He tries to keep a leash on you, but he wouldn't tug on it or shorten it IF its also hurting you, he would resort to just chasing you around,,, but given the chance, he would like you to live inside him so you would be safe and protected, but you wouldn't be happy and that's a problem for him

Gillion and Language!! :D (another jrwi hc ramble)
Personally, I really love the head-cannon of common being Gillion’s second language and therefore having a little struggle. (Primordial being his first language)
For example like, when Gillion was first pulled onto their old ship, he would’ve struggled a little with translating the words in his head. The crew would get into little miscommunications over it and he’d get frustrated with trying to adjust - among the additional discomfort of being out of water.
(I think that could also be the reason why he speaks so formally, unable to speak common as naturally as his co-captains. Though, I feel it’s also fitting to his character that the elders would have hammered formality into his speech.)
Gillion would have nobody to talk to with ease, except for Pretzel of course, the only person he’d assume would understand. It would that way for a while, until Jay would stumble upon his conversation and answer him in (somewhat) fluent Primordial.
I feel that’d be one of the things that’d bring them closer in their early days, teaching each other little words to help with understanding. Jay would enjoy the practise, not often being able to speak Primordial with anyone but the teachers who had taught her or long lost friends from Featherbrook. It’d help solve the barrier between them :)
With others it’s not so easy, which is why Gillion is so boisterous and expressive, trying to communicate another way. He and Chip find a way of understanding, learning slowly to read each-other’s expression or through physical signs. They show affection through side hugs or leaning into one another or wrapping an arm around the other’s shoulder. Actions sometimes convey more than words do.
When Gillion bonds with Caspian it would be a relief, rambling about home in the language he is familiar with. It’s nostalgic and comforting, especially after missing home and being forced to adjust to the change of culture so quickly. Even in the tank, everyone around him speaks in familiar sounds. It’s nice to hear words he can decipher without having to think too hard, the meanings coming to him with ease.
The same struggle comes to Edyn as well, speaking in broken sentences when they all meet in a bar in All-port. She spends most of her time working in the tank, so she still has a hard time adjusting and trying to respond to Chip and Jay as they talk to her. Gillion helps her out, his common improving over time spent on the Albatross. She still whispers to him in Primordial as the night goes on, and it brings him comfort that he isn’t alone.
Some of the Riptide crew would try and learn with time too. Gillion would teach Ollie little phrases to entertain him or tell him undersea stories. Chip would do his best to learn as much as he could; small languages lessons in-between sparring or training. He’d probably suck at it, laughed at by Jay for mixing up completely different words. The effort means a lot to Gillion at least.
Okay, this got out of hand. Goodnight! snooooree mimimmimi
Also, if you like this head-cannon you should read this fic that made me think about it :D (It’s an unfinished Royalty AU and it’s really awesome!)

Grey Landing (Part 10)
I have finished another GT July(2023) prompt! This time the prompt was "Memory". I don't remember what I had originally planned for this prompt when I started the challenge, but when I started planning it Isaac kept coming up. So we have more of Isaac's misadventures.
(Part 1) (Part 2) (Part 3) (Part 4) (Part 5) (Part 6) (Part 7) (Part 8) (Part 9)
~~~
The food, simple but hearty, felt heavy and strange in Isaac’s hands, like he held edible gold. He wasted no more time tucking in to an unorthodox meal, tearing bites off the large crumbs of bread and cheese and trying not to picture the disapproval he’d get from his mum for it. She’d taught him manners for how to be a guest in someone else’s house. She’d given up trying to get him to use them at sea.
Considering his predicament, trapped in a giant bowl on a giant counter in a giant bloody house, Isaac considered himself still adrift. So he ate like a sailor. His body sang with relief.
It forced him to think about when he last ate. He cast his mind back to a morning that felt normal, a coffee and breakfast before heading out with a bundle to be his lunch while he was out on the waves working for their next supper. That hadn’t been this morning. Had it been the day before? If he’d known a storm would break his ship and send him so far adrift, he’d have been more discerning with that precious bundle of rations, maybe the last lunch ever packed for him. Hell, he might have said something more to the people he passed on his way to the dock.
They probably all thought he’d been taken by the waves.
As with most things that might lead to heavy thoughts, Isaac pondered the memory only long enough to know he ought to shut it away again. A moment’s reprieve didn’t mean he had the time to break down just yet. Beyond the walls of his improvised jail cell, three giants sat at their dinner table, talking little but every casual word boomed.
He thought he’d finish up the offered food in his desperate hunger, but eventually the scale of things caught up to him. He pondered what remained of what he’d been given and wondered if they’d even be able to tell he had anything. His core was heavy and full, but he’d hardly made a dent. He set the ridiculous portions beside him and considered climbing out of the bowl before abruptly lying back with a huff.
His eyes closed in spite of himself. He didn’t plan to sleep, but he would make himself as comfortable as he could. The giants could take their time as far as he was concerned‒
“Long we’ve tossed on the rolling main, now we’re safe ashore, Jack!
Don’t forget your old shipmate, faldee raldee raldee raldee rye-eye-o!”
He’s on a ship, a chorus of voices calling up as a hundred hands or more toil away. It’s all familiar. A grinning face, pale and mischievous, angles his way as the lyrics of their shanty always come back to the name.
“Long we’ve tossed on the rolling main, now we’re safe ashore, ‘Zac!”
While everyone else sings ‘Jack’, the nicest voice on board sings to Isaac alone and he knows he can belong‒
A jab to his side broke Isaac out of the unexpected dream. He flailed away from the offending feeling, a hazy memory of someone he might never see again clinging to his thoughts. A confused noise escaped him as he caught up to what had poked him.
A giant fingertip, large and callused and probably strong enough to crush his ribs by itself, lingered nearby. The attached hand loomed close in the bowl with him, with an equally giant arm extending overhead. Isaac’s brow furrowed as he stared up, again confronted with the scale of these giants. Clei stood over him, looking almost worried.
“Am not dead yet, lad,” Isaac told him. “Restin’ my eyes and slackin’ off, is all.”
Clei huffed and muttered in that language of theirs. “Crur cayg.” Apparently that was his warning, because that hand descended on him despite his noise of alarm. Once again Isaac found himself all too easily gathered up in a single hand, a fist curled around his middle and restricting his movements. He grimaced as vertigo gripped him just as securely when Clei lifted him out of the bowl and turned away from the counter at the same time.
The room whirled past him, barely-familiar shapes passing in and out of notice in the fast movements of a giant who didn’t seem to notice Isaac turning green. Thankfully they didn’t have that far to go, at least as far as Clei was concerned. A few steps later, Isaac found himself back on the giant table, scrambling to his feet after Clei set him down prone. The dishes from dinner were set aside along with the centerpiece, so Isaac found himself fully on the spot with giants looming and staring from three sides.
Clei still looked sheepish. Gufnad still looked annoyed. Trydi had her lips pursed in something like exasperation. Isaac, deciding not to let the silence draw out too long, held out his arms. “Am I on trial, then, my gracious hosts?”
Gufnad bristled, a lot like Isaac expected him to. He had a memory of more than one disciplinary hearing from his navy days, when just existing rankled an officer or two. Gufnad followed that pattern all too well.
Before the man could bark some indignant thing at him, though, Trydi shot him a look. “Gufnad. Dlad.” And then she sent Isaac a similar look, one that cowed some of his contrarian attitude despite himself. “Kaimu. Dlad.” She said more, quick syllables falling over each other and leaving Isaac in the dust, unable to pick up words in her rhythmic accent any better than he could before, though he realized partway through her question what their language reminded him of.
Isaac sighed. Some of the annoyance left his shoulders, but he still gestured vaguely at her. “I don’t understand you, lass. I don’t speak … Big Welsh. I don’t even speak normal Welsh. And for that, am sorry. We won’t get anywhere talking at each other like this, hmm?”
Clei finally chimed in, with the attitude of someone not used to speaking up to the others. He stammered a bit, and though Isaac tried to follow, he only heard one familiar sound among the rush: the giant used his name, once or twice, and Isaac had to hope he was vouching for him the best he could.
When Clei finally tapered off, Isaac watched him for a beat, then looked to the other two expectantly. “Only good stories, I hope,” he said, again only to prevent an awkward silence.
Gufnad’s frown didn’t waver. “Trydi, crur bid wal nei̯fitblei̯nd.” Isaac narrowed his eyes. He recognized the word that Gufnad had called him before, and he could only assume it was some kind of insult. Neigh-vit-blind yourself, you stubborn bastard.
Trydi winced faintly and glanced between Gufnad and Clei, and occasionally even Isaac. As head of the household, apparently the tie breaking vote fell to her. Isaac didn’t get a vote at all, not that that surprised him either. All he could do was stand there in the middle of a giant table and hope the outcome favored him.
Finally, she sighed and tilted her head towards Clei. “Bid tars. Clei, yulubus grag. Gaog, wif gwut hust.”
Isaac still didn’t understand them, but the grin that broke over Clei’s nervous face and the resigned eyeroll from Gufnad told him enough. He sighed; two giants on his side wasn’t bad at all, and having the lady of the house giving him any measure of a chance was worth a lot. His shoulders unwound some tension and he once again held his hands together in front of himself, nodding at her. “Trydi. Thank you.”
She didn’t smile at him, not exactly, but her lips twitched in bemusement. “Rayfn, kaimu.”
also imagine that, at first, the Castle itself was translating everything Allura and Coran were saying. => their voices came out in altean first, then, slightly delayed, in english, through the speakers or something like that, and it was
creepy
like, you catch the falling alien girl, she says something unpronounceable, and then the whole castle hall comments on your ears??
sheesh.
naturally comms in paladins' helmets must have built-in translators, and they possibly use micro-earphones of some kind too
but just
how it feels, when aliens speak, to hear their voices in your language with one ear while simultaneously hearing their own language with both ears AND watching their mouths move in a completely different manner, not at all matching the words you hear & understand
I can't get over the Xiao language barrier. Though one question is left unanswered; what will Xiao do when you'll have to go back home?
Tw: Kidnapping, noncon and breeding.
Oh no, Xiao won't allow that. He'll make sure to keep you locked up far-- faraway from Liyue harbor and any civilization. And if you get too rowdy tie you up and he'll fuck the bratty. Xiao will grab you by the hair and bury your face unto the sheets as he pounds you from behind. He won't pull out either (he never does) and make you bare his child.
I really love the 2nd translator that Baghera uses. It’s in the corner to supplement for the language the in game translation isn’t covering. (It seems like a better translator too ;-;)
I hope more streamers start using this bc it stays on outside of QSMP too! I’d love to be able to understand more of their non-mc streams that don’t usually have the translator!!
And I don’t mean the live caption some of the QSMP streamers have added bc it’s really clunky especially on mobile :/
Also Baghs’ isn’t just a live thing and is part of the stream for both the streamer and audience so it’s up for vods too. She can switch it when everyone is in English so it translates for her too.
Reverse First Contact AU
This idea just dropped in my brain after watching Harambe's tragic back story. And I'm so excited to tell you this AU. Transformers have become extremely endangered because of the war. They are all on Earth and can't communicate with humans because of the language barrier. Years later, all the possible tech humans were able to extract from them did eventually satisfy human curiosity enough to see them as less of a threat. And humans just now treat the last surviving cybertronians on Earth as though they were simple space curiosities. To be kept in a zoo setting. That are owned by states. Sometimes they are shipped to other states as a way of maintaining cordial political affiliations between nations. Since they are so expensive to maintain and keep in one place. Think of it as a Planet Of The Apes, old gods situation lol. [I revised my ask and decided to make this a separate blog post others can add their ideas to]
Whumptober day 25: Lost voice
back at it again with fic. two days in a row!! rip emmet tho. lol
> 1000 words
Emmet shivered, pulling his coat tighter around himself. The ends fluttered in the wind where they weren't weighed down by snow or torn off completely by the wild pokemon he'd encountered.
The cold tore against his skin, a sharp painful wind that felt like blades of ice. The snow was deep, reaching up to his knees-- far deeper than he'd ever seen.
He had absolutely no idea where he was, or how he'd gotten there.
Everything about this sucked.
It had already been a bad day. Too many unpleasant passengers, too much paperwork, not a single trainer making it to his car on the Battle Subway. He was completely and utterly mentally drained by the time he was able to close down for the night.
And now, he'd suddenly been transported to what felt like a nightmare land. Completely unfamiliar, the wild pokemon were far too aggressive, the environment actively hostile to survival.
He didn't even have his pokemon! He'd put them in the PC to rest before he took everyone home. But never had the opportunity to do anything past that, because he'd been taken to some dragons-forsaken blizzard hell land.
(He tried verrry hard not to think about the similarities to what happened to his brother. Did Ingo get sent to somewhere as hostile as this? The same place, even? Would he have even survived?)
It was all so overwhelming and stressful and frustrating it, embarrassingly, made him want to cry. But he couldn't, because his tears would only make the cold worse.
And so, without any idea what else he could do in this situation, he continued to trudge forward through the snow.
He kept on walking until his extremities were alarmingly numb, hoping that there were humans somewhere nearby and he hadn't been sent to the middle of nowhere. It wasn't like he knew how to survive in an environment like this! The coldest it had ever gotten for him was winter, and on the peak of Twist Mountain. Neither of which were anything like this frozen wasteland.
He growled in frustration, fruitlessly rubbing his hands together in an attempt to warm his ice-cold fingers, before quickly giving up and tucking them under his armpits. He couldn't do anything about his nose or ears, and he didn't even want to think about how his toes were faring. He needed to find some kind of shelter soon, or he wouldn't be surviving. Especially with how the wild pokemon were acting. With his luck, they'd find him shivering next to a measly fire and figure him a nice easy meal.
Why they were so aggressive, he had no idea. Maybe it was a sign that there were truly no humans in the area -- if they'd never seen one, never been socialized, their aggression would make sense. He suspected. He was not an expert on the behavior of truly wild pokemon.
After a while stuck in his thoughts, he realized he had stopped walking entirely, and was just standing in place. He cursed at himself, and started walking at a faster pace than before. If he was spacing out bad enough he forgot to keep walking, things were definitely not looking good.
And then.
And then!
Much to his relief and joy, as he rounded a particularly tall snowdrift he caught the unmistakable glimmer of a light in the distance.
Something bright and warm colored, completely unlike something a creature native to this climate could naturally produce.
Without hesitation, he altered his course slightly and made a direct approach to the source of the light, increasing his pace even more -- the relief and hope of seeing the light was particularly rejuvenating.
It wasn't long until he could see things more clearly. A campfire! With tents! And best of all, people sitting around it! Real, human people!
He'd never felt so happy to see another person when he was in such an overwhelmed mental state that he was. He grinned, big and wide. Even with the stress, it came easy with the amount of relief he felt.
They must have seen his approach, or heard his hurried footsteps. Suddenly, one of the individuals jumped up, letting out a wordless shout of alarm that caused the rest of their group to whip their heads around and look at Emmet.
Only… rather than. whatever he might have expected. the people then ran to hide, or pulled out weapons and called their pokemon partners to their side.
What? Wait, what?
His steps faltered, then slowed to a stop all together as one individual in particular stepped forward, spear pointed directly at Emmet's heart, even from the relative distance. Not far enough to reach him, but he was confident they could throw it and their aim would be true.
They shouted something, certainly words. For a moment, he thought he had just completely missed comprehending what they said, with how mentally and physically drained he was, but as they continued to speak he realized they were speaking in a completely different language entirely.
That was. not good.
He tilted his head, letting out a confused noise. Perhaps they could be able to understand his plight? No, that wouldn't make sense. But if he himself tried talking in his own language, maybe then?
He just wanted the spear to Stop being pointed at his heart. It was. quite uncomfortable.
He held up his hands, and tried to speak.
But all that came out was a pained, wheezy rasp, something awful and horrible even for his bad days. But this was definitely one of the worst days ever, so it wasn't particularly surprising.
Unfortunately, it seemed to have the opposite effect of getting the others to understand him. In fact, it seemed it was rather alarming -- not that he blamed them. It was definitely a horrible noise -- as the individual with the spear stepped forwards and jabbed it towards him, effectively pushing him away without touching him.
He whined, upset and confused, but it did little to sway the others, and their aggression did not lessen.
There was no way he was in the world he'd come from. Not with every pokemon and human being so aggressive. Pokemon, he could understand, but humans? It just did not make any sense. It wouldn't fit in his understanding of the world he came from.
He tucked his hands back under his arms, giving up on the peaceful gesture from before. His smile faltered, but he fought to keep it up. He needed to seem friendly!
He rrrealy did not want to get sent back to that horrible snow and ice. He would certainly perish.
Despite their reactions, he stopped moving backwards and instead pointed at the fire. He tried making a pleading noise, but it clearly didn't come across well, as the person with a spear seemed to get angrier.
They shouted at him, loud and vicious, and jabbed the spear at him close enough that it would have stabbed him if he hadn't moved away in time. Even then, it nicked him in the arm, easily slicing through his moderately reinforced coat.
Not good!
He tried one last, desperate attempt at speech, tears gathering in his eyes as everything threatened to bury him in an overwhelming wave of everything.
And surprisingly, it must have done something, based on their slight hesitation.
But it was only slight, giving him just enough time to dodge another swipe of the spear. The tears began to fall, and the person in front of him growled at their hesitation.
A moment later, it seemed as if they'd come to a conclusion of some kind, their countenance relaxing --
Before they quickly flipped their spear around and whacked him in the head with a blunt end.
(The last thing he saw, an instant before he blacked out, was a dark silhouette in the background, quickly approaching, and a comfortingly familiar voice.)
