Sharing my 2023 wellness project, please, and wishing a Happy New Year, All! 🧶🎉

Wonky as it be, this stashghan helped me manage some fairly blah times. ❤

The project was inspired by a notoriously uncredited pinterest pic (below left*) which - somehow - led me to recall a long ago dream project (right) and was then encouraged by my precious friend @shesanearthgirl 🦋

I found some crochet charts and tutorials to lead me with making a granny square ripple. Next, I sorted yarn stash color groups to have five shades in each: four colors for a mix of 3-round squares; and a fifth color to use for a fourth jayg (join-as-you-go) round connecting the squares point-to-point.

Each 'diamond' band of squares was edged on either side with a row of white granny stitch ripple followed by a couple random colors from the squares, and then finished with a black row.**

I made a couple color bands and then tested my plan to connect them with a black-edged white diamond. THIS (above right) was my pure happy moment for sure! 😁🧶

Next step was making 3-round granny squares in white and connecting them with a fourth row in black jayg.

The real beauty of this overall project turned out being the ability to lay the color bands and adjust with a visual before committing to the stitched sequence.

Ideally, I would have made six color bands. As it happened with five bands, the throw ended a bit short so I needed to add white diamond bands to either end. It's not awful, but I think it would have been better to cap the ends in the larger color blocks.

** I realized in hindsight that it was better to make the color bands WITHOUT the final row of black, and rather make that final black row of the color bands in jayg connecting to the black row of the white diamond bands.

as much as he wasn't around often for jason's robin era, dick's still the only one that jason thinks really gets what he's been through. part of it's an understanding that they both felt and went through very similar things. i think jason grows to be comforted by the way dick always just seems to *know* when it comes to him.

although i think in the past jason was annoyed and felt belittled at the way dick seemed to know him better than he did himself, without even knowing him on a very personal level. but i think jason would learn to understand that dick's 'all-knowing' doesn't come from being the smartass, better version of him. it comes from the way he relates to him, both trauma-wise and experiences-wise.

of course, i think noticing the lack of individuality even in his flaws would bother jason, especially when it just serves to add another layer of unoriginality to his robin. he feels compared to dick enough, so learning they were meant to be pretty much carbon copies of each other is pretty rough for him, and makes breaking out of dick's shadow borderline impossible

although i think the bonding point that would have won jason over is how bruce always tried to raise them by relating his trauma to theirs. i think jason has a revelation when dick brings this method of bruce's parenting up for the first time, and the fact that it did not work at all. that's also when jason realises that although he's never truly related to bruce when he's tried to level with him about that stuff, him and dick are practically the same people, and it's hard not to get him.

Dick using his acrobat shit to catch up with this scraggly little emo cunt in the hopes of getting any information because holy shit this kid has big fuck off swords. He’s getting this one to Bruce. The weirdness is right up their alley.

Let Cass and Alfred be the only ones who know because shit does not get by them. They let him because as long as he is stabbing criminals and not Tim then they’re solid.

I used to be one of those guys when I first joined the Kirby fandom, but everytime I hear a discussion of the series writing that starts with "So the Lore is InSaNe-" and not like, "Kirby has a fun writing style that takes advantage of its cute exterior to tell cool stories that reward player's curiosity and leave lots of room for imagination-" I cringe so goddamn hard.

I kinda just hate that people approach things that encourage investment when they don't expect it as inherently absurd. Like it is fun to joke about how absurd Kirby lore can be, but it really often comes with an air of disrespect or exhaustion rather than like, appreciation that these games are made by people who want to tell interesting stories when they could easily make as much money just making polished enough fluffy kiddy platformers. And when it's not met with exhaustion, it's met with - like I said before - that tone that it's stupid for a series like this TO have devs who care about writing stuff for it. Which is a whole other thing about people not respecting things made to appeal to kiddie aesthetic or tone.

Maybe the state of low-stakes YouTube video essays just blows cause people play up ignorance and disbelief for engagement, but like I STG I hear people use this tone for like actual narrative based games sometimes. Some people don't like... appreciate when a game is made by people who care a shitton in ways that aren't direct gameplay feedback. And they especially don't appreciate it when it comes from something with any sense of tonal dissonance intentional or not.

Anyways, I love games made by insane people. I love games made by teams who feel like they wanna make something work or say something so bad. I love that energy, especially when invested into something that could easily rest on its laurels or which obviously won't be taken seriously. I love this in a lot of classic campy 2000s games, I love this in insanely niche yet passionate fanworks, and I love it in the Kirby series and its writing. Can we please stop talking about it like it's an annoyance or complete joke?
