yeah i guess the silm is a tragedy, but i am so deeply and unfathomly disturbed by the eol, aredehl, and maeglin situation.
like....it's so, so BAD. especially for aredhel
im probably getting all the lore wrong and the deep meanings instuff and yeah everyone dies so badly in the silm BUT
all she wanted was to go and be free in the woods like the good old days. she wanted to explore the wilderness and hang out with her cousins. that's not a bad thing to want.
it's like she gets punished for this shit. she winds up lost in the darkest, scariest woods of bereliand. only to be lured and forcibly married to some emotionally abusive vampire elf (there are varying interpertations, but i refuse to believe eol was in any way shape or form a good person). then, she has a whole kid (who she didn't really want).
when she finally escapes her and her son's awful situation and returns to her brother. her stupid captor follows her there and then tries to kill her son. she takes a bullet for him, and then DIES. while she's dying she's telling her brother to be merciful to the motherfucker who tried to kill her. and by saving maeglin, the fall of Gondolin is secured. so she died IN VAIN
all the while celegorm and curufin were totally fine killing innocent people in the name of collecting some shiny rocks, but heasitated to kill the son of a bitch who kidnapped and abused their beloved cousin.
anyway can someone reccomend me some fix-it fics that address this situation i think what i really need is turgon shooting eol the moment he walks in the door and having his sister stay mad at him for that.

Tbh we really should have had alarm bells about GoT ever since Daenerys kept her hair after being burnt...
The entire point of that incident was for her to take control over the masculinised culture by showing that she was something more than human, coming out bald and miraculously unscathed, but something alien, unexplainable and mysterious. Something you might not understand, but you wouldn’t want to get on the wrong side of. And then from that point on she continues to fuck with the gender archetypes of her adopted culture as her hair slowly regrows, being unquestionably a figure of immense inherited and personal power, yet defying and visually flaunting all unwritten and existing codes of how such a person should appear and carry themself. It’s also a parallel/foil/foreshadow of Cersei being against her will stripped and shaved as a form of humilation; Daenerys begins her story and road to queen without any of the Lannisters’ artifice, and only draws power from such a situation; no-one can hurt her with the later threat of it.
Meanwhile the Game of Thrones showrunners: hehe sexy nekkid blonde lady with long luxurious locks rustling in the wind  😈 No body hair though, we don’t want people to switch off!

Not to be a huge bitch on main but the fact that most fanfiction is written by women and still is mostly derived of dude characters processing certain feelings sometimes really complicates things for me. How come this is a safe space for queer people, but wlw content is either sexualized or just random asf? Why is it that the angst tag is GOVERNED by mlm hurt/comfort? Why aren't there more female ocs and pre-existing characters going through severe emotional turmoil? Where is the portrayal of a violent psychic episode, why does it have to have a masculine form at all times? Where is the parent-daughter tag, the sisterhood tag, the complexity in the few stories that are tethered to it? Why does it feel like I'm a minority when I talk about how female writers in fanfiction repeat the same cycle of weak female characterisation, or a flawless one? I'm sick and tired of all the Mary Sues, the bland "badass bitch" archetype, the damsel in distress and the kuudere. I'm sick of wanting to comfort myself with something that I can fully resonate with and being met with a stock character or a well-written passage about some dude. I want girls in pain. I want girls being angry and hurtful to others and themselves. I want realism, but if regular media AND fan-made media keep failing me, why should I bother?

Find Fictional Mentors
Finding female mentor archetypes in fiction can be a challenge, particularly ones that fit the wide range or personality traits and motivation found elsewhere. Today, let's discuss just a few of the best female mentors in fiction, fantasy, and folklore.
Daily writing promptIf you could be someone else for a day, who would you be, and why?View all responses           Have you ever needed to explain a niche and specific aspect of your life and found yourself fumbling for examples that someone outside the community may understand? It can be terribly awkward your mind suddenly does not seem to remember what exactly this part of your life is outside…

Juliet E. McKenna:
Today from the creative writing archive - the distinction between writing feminist epic fantasy and writing epic fantasy as a feminist. Interesting reading for me, having now written a consciously female-centered version of Arthurian legend in The Cleaving.

musings on FFXVI story based on the demo (tl;dr not feeling so hype anymore)
So yeah obviously it's going to be a well written and competently made story that will make you feel many things. What I'm unhype about is, much like 14's story, it's looking to be very uncritical with the way it portrays women.
The first inkling of it was that interview where YoshiP answered a question about in-universe diversity by falling back on an appeal to "reality" as many Western fantasy authors do when they want to excuse why their fantasy worlds seem to always be populated by white people. So "mature fantasy" for this team already means borrowing some of the uglier sides of Western fantasy uncritically.
So it's no surprise that apparently the "narrative boundaries" demand a story where the very first female character we see uses sex appeal in a military negotiation, then has what I can only describe as "bad guy sex" in the hallway immediately after. Very empowering, much girlboss.
But okay, she's a villain and villain sexy. What about the other women so far?
Well, one's completely helpless and is MIA at the end of the demo (though apparently survives) and the other is the main villain of the first chapter, who tries to seduce the Extremely Based dad but is rebuked because her feminity exists in the story as a weapon, and at the end has both her (set dressing, non-character) hand maidens executed for shock value and to show how irredeemable she is, but in a Evil Noble Woman way.
I swear it is like the game is looking at you the player and giving you permission to shout "YOU BITCH" at the screen. Literally every stream I've watched you can predict when the chat will be full of that down to the second.
Also, no women in the Shields. Gee I wonder why. Will we see the in-universe sexism confronted at any point? Or is it just part of the western fantasy aesthetic? Who can say, time will tell.
But what it's telling me so far is that the writers see feminity in two shades. Weak and Helpless, or Manipulating [insert gendered slur here]. And I mean it when I say it's horribly gendered. Men are badass in a variety of ways--strength of arms, noble blood, royal authority, dying from Cool Explosions or dying on their feet weapons drawn. Women's options for power are so far, being nobles and wielding political power, or having to flee or get cut down unawares by random soldiers (can you tell I hate that scene?)
Even Beneditka is only a badass because she's a Dominant--y'know one of the singularly most powerful individuals in the setting--and throws the most embarrassing tantrum I've ever seen on screen after being defeated, and she is supposed to be a person in a position of command. Like you look me in the eye and tell me you could see ANY of the male characters acting that way, even if they're characterized as horribly unhinged?
So yeah, after an initial spike of excitement I think I'm gonna pass on XVI until much later, and hearing how the story and characters shake out. But I don't have faith in these writers when THIS was their tone setter.
tl;dr - more fantasy sexism, but a mature rating means they can be so much worse with it now. At least it plays well.

What do you like about the ACOTAR series? Mostly im looking for something outside of podcasts to occupy my dog walks and these come in audiobook format…
OMG. I could go on and on about this.
First of all, I am just an absolute slut for fantasy romance. So I basically already knew I was going to love it – even if it wasn't that amazing.
But it is amazing.
The thing that first stands out is just how rich the world is. Every character has such a pervasive backstory. Even the smallest characters have the most interesting backgrounds and stories.
There are so many amazing female characters, that they all actually have depth. There's not just one female character that's oversimplified so the masses can relate to her. And it's sometimes rare for me to find a female protagonist that I truly relate to or simply adore. But I love Feyre in this series. Even when she's making stupid decisions or showing her flaws, I still love her.
There's not just one love story to root for. There are so many. And I'll just admit it: I love shipping couples. And when there's more chances to do so, I'm jazzed. There's unrequited love. There's forbidden love. There's toxic love. There's platonic love. It's got it all.
There's a lot of amazing folklore and mythology that inspires the series. Sarah J. Maas did her fucking homework.
Disclaimer: I've heard this series described as "fairy porn" and that is simply ridiculous – and also so damaging and low-key sexist. That would be like calling Game of Thrones "rape fantasy." If fantasy includes a rape scene, it's accurate to the time period. If it's romantic, consensual, and loving sex that's clearly written for the female gaze, then it's somehow discredited as "porn." People need to check themselves before they say problematic shit like that.
Hope this gave you (or anyone else) enough reason to go pick up the first book! 🌹⚔️

I'm doing it gang, I've spent stupider gardening money before like when I dropped $300 on shade loving perennial bulbs only to learn they were also plants that rotted with wet feet and all immediately died in my swampy gumbo soil
I'm buying two firefly petunias. I've never grown petunias much because where I live they're a winter annual but fuck it I'll grow them as an indoor plant I certainly have the sun to do it.
They're supposed to ship to me in April, I'll report back on if they immidiately die or this is the coolest thing I own. My biochemical engineering design project was using a similar chemical pathway to modify bacteria to glow in the presence of specific toxins so I absolutely need glowing petunias in my window box
