what should i do if i suspect i have borderline personality disorder? i’ve tried to tell my therapist about it but she’s shut me down because i’m a minor and invalidates me when i try to bring it up. i’d have to wait a few more years until i’m an adult to get diagnosed if that’s true but i meet all the criteria and it’s been a pattern throughout my entire life and it explains everything i’ve been experiencing (including struggling with other mental illnesses), do you have any advice?
Hi, thank you so much for the question! My advice is get a new therapist. I dont mean that in a bad way. Your therapist should be more helpful when you have concerns. Now in therapy, there are a lot of therapists who dont like treating BPD for whatever reason. You will need to find a therapist who uses DBT (dialectical behavior therapy). They are better in treating someone with BPD. I think you should speak with your primary care doctor and they may be able to refer to a better therapist. Also you can do your own research in finding a therapist who practices DBT. I have had many therapists and its hard to find the right one for you. Your therapist should never invalidate you. I would get a second opinion from another professional. Also it should not matter if your a minor, mental illness is mental illness. I hope this helps!

and not know how to deal with them coming at you with lightning speed or even choose one to focus on because I don't know how i am supposed to feel. its a vicious cycle of fighting yourself because you think you should one certain way about something.
The worst part about having BPD is feeling around 100 different emotions at once....

You don’t actually need to have been in a psych ward, or in hospital, or have self-harm scars, or have a huge, visible breakdown, for the pain you’re in to be taken as seriously as it should be. People tend to think that pain is only intense and severe and worth taking extremely seriously when they see outward, visible signs of it, or when a big event has taken place, like being taken to the hospital, or to a psychiatric clinic, etc. But lots of people just get up, go on with their day, and come home and wish they were dead. Pain is pain. Suffering that can be seen is no greater than suffering that cannot.
