● books read in 2022 ↴ Gabriela, cravo e canela (Gabriela, Clove and Cinnamon) 1958 • by Jorge Amado
“Love is not to be proven or measured. It’s like Gabriela. It exists, and that is enough. The fact that you can’t understand or explain something doesn’t do away with it. I know nothing about the stars, but I see them in the heavens; and my ignorance in no way affects either their existence or their beauty.”

I'm so glad you liked Encanto. Here are some fun (colombian) facts:
The town where the family lives is inspired by Barichara, a little town in Santander that is known because most of its buildings were made with just dust, without any type of support.
I don't know if you noticed, but during the songs the women moved their skirts a lot. This movement is call faldeo, and its an integral part of most colombian dances.
THE YELLOW BUTTERFLIES. These animals are a central part of one of our literary classics, One hundred years of solitude, written by Gabriel García Márquez. And most of the movie takes inspiration from this books and its genre, magical realism, to combine magical elements with the real world.
The river where Abuelo Pedro died and when Abuela and Mirabel reconcile is called Caño Cristales: El río de los siete colores (the river of the seven colours). It's super famous because you can actually see seven colours in the water.
You said your favourite animal was the tiger, but it's not a tiger it's a jaguar 🐆 (technically it's a panther but we all called it a jaguar).
Mirabel's outfit is from Vélez, Santander, and is worn on special occasions. The shirt that Feliz and Antonio wear is called Guayabera, from the warmer regions. And the poncho that Camilo wears is called ruana, from the colder regions. And I'm 99% sure Mirabel's dad, Agustín, is from Bogotá (the capital).
What happened to Alma and Pedro is called forced displacement (desplazamiento forzado). It happens when someone, a group of people or an entire village have to leave their homes or they'll be assassinated. Colombia is the country with the biggest internal migration in the world, approximately 7 million of people had had to leave their homes.
I hope you like this fun facts.
I absolutely loved these so much. I love fun facts and these were so heart warming.
Would you recommend any books by Colombian authors (in English of course)? One of my goals for 2022 is to read more books from diverse authors so I would love some rec s if you are interested.
Thanks again. Loved this 🌈
