WEEK 2: DECAY @inktober There's so much I want to share about this piece. 1. It wasn't the subject I originally intended to draw today, but the weather prevented me from accessing my intended subject. Not for a lack of trying. Swipe through to see a video of the point where I decided to turn around. If nothing else, I am dedicated to my work 🤣 2. I loved this prompt! This gorgeous, dilapidated boat is across the way from us. I've been meaning to draw it for so long, but you know life & other projects happen. I really think there is a beauty in decay. Stated another way, decay really is just change & everything around us is constantly changing. Living on the water has brought that into sharper focus for me. It isn't necessarily a scary thing (although it certainly can be), it's just reality & I'm learning to make peace with that. 3. Oh my goodness, I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE the nib grind that @customnibstudio did on my @kaweco.germany Lilliput. It's an Extra Fine nib with a Needle Point reverse write! It's SO incredible for cross hatching! THANK YOU GENA!!! I'm hoping to put together a @youtube video sometime soon about fountain pens & their application in sketching & artwork. "Moon Jelly" digital version. I've really been enjoying working this way. A few rough sketches first, including the one in my planner. I snap a picture & upload it to Photoshop. Once there I digitally "ink" it again, tweaking & refining as I go. I'm learning SO much! Find & sketch - seahorse! Found this dried out little seahorse on the beach a couple weeks back. I'm enjoying learning about the flora & fauna of our new home. Apparently the Northern Lined Seahorse is native to Long Island & like so many species, they aren't doing so well due to habitat lose. "Sisterhood" as part of the altered book project I started over a year ago. Rummaging through my art supplies this morning I came across this textile piece I created during an art day with @nvanginkel back on March 6th 2020 before covid-19 was even on our radar in NJ. Rummaging further I was inspired by my Grandmother's old button collection. My grandmother struggled with depression due to childhood traumas, as do I & as do countless women across the world. The buttons sewn here represent the women I've lost physically, emotionally, temporarily, but also all the women struggling in this moment without the support of their Sisterhood. Time spent in sisterhood was a time when we used to be able to come together to lay bare all our messy frayed edges & loose strings without fear of judgement. It was a time to mend, heal, draw strength & support from each other.
