HIV POSITIVE PRIDE

This year the Spanish NGO CESIDA has organized the first ever Positive Pride to raise awareness of the many issues facing seropositive people in Spain and beyond.

The several-week-long event includes talks, art exhibitions, film screenings, and today's demonstration "Positive March".

"Standard Deviation" Going to Festivals

We at NineColors are happy to announce that "Standard Deviation" (Desviación Típica), a short film written by Caru Basakatua and directed by Paco Ruiz, is complete! The distributor, Distribution With Glasses, has begun submitting to festivals, and the short has already received its first selection. "Standard Deviation" will be screened at the 27th Mostra Fire!!, the LGTBI Cinema Festival of Barcelona, in June 2022. As part of the festival, the short will be available for ten days on Filmin streaming platform starting on June 9th!

"Standard Deviation" is the story of River—young, punk, and non-binary—in their first appointment at the "Gender Disorders Unit". There, a psychiatrist subjects River to a test that will decide if they can access the care they need. River knows exactly how they have to answer, but an overlooked detail could jeopardize everything.

"Standard Deviation" is a production of Elamedia Estudios and Apoyo Positivo and is part of “Locura”, the fourth season of Indetectables, the award-winning series of short films addressing topics such as STIDs, stigma, mental health, diversity, addiction and more. Indetectables is a project of Apoyo Positivo, a Spanish NGO that promotes diversity and works to create a better society through projects that improve health, education, and human rights.

En NineColors nos hace muy felices anunciar que "Desviación Típica", cortometraje escrito por Caru Basakatua y dirigido por Paco Ruiz, ya está listo. La distribuidora Distribution With Glasses ha empezado a mandar el corto a festivales y ya tenemos nuestra primera selección: “Desviación Típica” se proyectará en la 27ª Mostra Fire!!, el Festival de Cine LGTBI de Barcelona, en junio de 2022. Y como parte del festival, el corto estará disponible durante diez días en la plataforma Filmin, a partir del 9 de junio.

"Desviación Típica" narra la historia de River, joven, punk y no binarie, durante su primera cita en la “Unidad de Trastornos de la Identidad de Género”. Allí, un psiquiatra somete a River al cuestionario que decidirá si puede o no acceder a la atención que necesita. River sabe perfectamente lo que debe contestar, pero un pequeño detalle lo pondrá todo en peligro.

“Desviación Típica" es una producción de Elamedia Estudios y Apoyo Positivo y forma parte de “Locura”, la cuarta temporada de Indetectables, la premiada serie de cortos que exploran temáticas de tipo social: ETSs, estigma, salud mental, diversidad, adicción... HIV: THE OTHER CLOSET

Imagine an unknown virus is spreading at incredible speed, causing a global pandemic that kills millions everywhere.

And now imagine that nobody cares. Nobody does anything about it. Nobody even talks about what's happening. Even worse, in many places the research into this lethal virus and possible ways to stop it are actively obstructed.

That's how the AIDS pandemic was for several decades.

World AIDS Day, held on 1 December every year since 1988, is an international day dedicated to raising awareness of the AIDS pandemic caused by the spread of HIV.

In the 40 years since the first cases of AIDS were discovered, enormous strides have been made in our knowledge of HIV and how to manage it, but there is still a great deal of work yet do be done to end the pandemic that never went away.

Thanks to the efforts of activists, scientists, and educators around the world, today a diagnosis is not necessarily a death sentence. Progress continues at an ever-accelerating pace, reaching milestones that were unthinkable only a few years ago:

U = U

With the treatments now available, a person living with HIV can have a totally normal life, including not being contagious. Yes, you read that right. When a person living with HIV receives adequate treatment, the virus is suppressed to the point that is no longer detectable in their blood: they become undetectable.

Undetectable means untransmissible. In other words, that person is not able to pass the virus to others.

PrEP and PEP

Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP) and Post-Exposure Prophylaxis (PEP) are two kinds of medication that are highly effective in preventing the transmission of HIV. They have been made available recently, and their implementation is still limited, but these drugs are already playing a critical role in reducing transmission rates among at-risk populations.

HIV Vaccine

We have never been closer to an effective and long-lasting vaccine against HIV. Thousands of researchers and volunteers around the globe are working tirelessly to develop one. Currently the Mosaico Study is the most promising candidate.

VIHsibility

The visibility of HIV/AIDS characters in media has come a long way, both in quantity and quality. These representations are important because they have real-world impact in people's perceptions and behaviors. For example, after the success of the British show "It's a Sin", there was a significant increase in HIV testing in the UK.

Saintmaking: the 90s 'nuns' who made a gay, HIV positive icon a saint

This year marks the 30th anniversary of film-maker Derek Jarman’s canonization by the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence, an activist organization for queer rights. At the time in 1991, Derek Jarman was the most prominent person in the UK living openly with HIV.

In the short documentary "Saintmaking", directed by Marco Alessi, the surviving Sisters tell the story of how and why they canonized Derek Jarman.

Their accounts of fighting against the extreme, government-sanctioned homophobia they faced in England during the 80s and 90s is especially resonant today, given the current wave of transphobia sweeping the UK and so many other countries.

Preserving and disseminating queer history is essential to insure that we don't lose the rights that our elders fought for and gave their lives to win. We should not take these imperiled rights for granted and should stand in solidarity with those who are currently being targeted with the same arguments and hate that have been used against every marginalized community.

The award-winning short-film series Indetectables is holding their first ever open casting!

Do you want to be the protagonist of “Standard Deviation”, the upcoming episode of Indetectables? We are looking for trans actors, with or without experience, to bring the character of River to life. Must be fluent in Spanish and available for filming in Madrid (Spain) in the autumn 2021.

River—twentysomething, non-binary, pre-HRT, with a punk aesthetic—is the kind of person that catches the eye of kids and, for completely different reasons, of the adults that accompany them. Where children are dying to ask River if that is their actual hair color and if they are a girl or a boy, the adults would rather cross the street to avoid them.

However, River is no different from any person of their age, just trying to navigate a world that is constantly at the edge of collapse: overlapping economic crisis, the growth of the far right, the climate emergency ...

Confronted with the uncertainty of not knowing if everything will explode tomorrow, River chooses rebellion, authenticity, euphoria, and love, instead of resignation, assimilation, paralysis, and selfishness.

River chooses to live, not to survive.

Sin embargo, River no es tan diferente de cualquier persona de su edad, tratando de navegar un mundo constantemente al borde del colapso: crisis económicas que se solapan, el ascenso de la extrema derecha, la emergencia climática…

Ante la incertidumbre de si todo estallará mañana, River elige rebeldía, autenticidad, euforia y amor, en lugar de resignación, asimilación, parálisis y egoísmo.

River elige vivir, no sobrevivir.

"Standard Deviation" is the story of River—young, punk, and non-binary—in their first appointment at the "Gender Disorders Unit". There, a psychiatrist subjects River to a test that will decide if they can access the care they need. River knows exactly how they have to answer, but an overlooked detail could jeopardize everything.

"Standard Deviation" will be an episode of the fourth season of Indetectables, an award-winning series of short films addressing LGTBQ+ topics such as STIDs, stigma, mental health, diversity, drugs and more. Indetectables is created by Apoyo Positivo, a Spanish NGO that promotes diversity and works to create a better society through projects that improve health, education, and human rights.

Also, we are thrilled to announce that the short film will be directed by Paco Ruiz. His debut short "Three Times", has won numerous awards and has been selected by film festivals around the world. We can't think of a better choice to bring "Standard Deviation" to the screen.

And the amazing people at Elamedia Estudios are joining the project, bringing their expertise and talent in pre- and post-production.

We are excited to have such an experienced and dedicated team working to bring the story of "Standard Deviation" to life. Stay tuned for more updates on this project, including a casting call for the role of River.
