Why Kageyama Tobio is smarter than you think

Kageyama is an adorable character; he is relatable to many, definitely amusing to most and ever so often because he seems to be “an idiot” or quite “simple-minded”. Haikyuu!! and its characters are supposed to entertain us and Furudate Sensei is pretty successful at it. However, Kageyama is by no means stupid, I’d even go so far to say that he’s quite intelligent.

Let’s take a look at this picture from the first volume of the manga where we can learn something about Kageyama:

In the official English translation, the word “頭脳” is one of the ability parameters and is translated as “intelligence” whereas the Haikyuu!! Wiki’s translation for it is “game sense”, which I personally like way better.

Because of that choice of words, we find a disclaimer that states that Kageyama’s academic performance is bad although he scored five stars in that category on the bottom of the page. I understand that some people find it funny that it needs to be there and seriously, that’s okay. But I really don’t want anybody to seriously think that this guy is a just plain dumb.

Idk how to rly word it but,,,

Bouncy!! Doesn’t matter if he’s sitting or standing he will Boing and there’s nothing you can do to stop him

Rocking back and forth on his heels, standing still during team gatherings or school assemblies sucks so it’s a more subtle way for him to stim

He likes swaying side to side as well! Especially if he’s got friends next to him so he can lightly bump their shoulders

Spiking? High fives? Slapping his kitchen worktop? Good Shit. He gets in trouble for causing too much noise at home because he slaps his hand against his desk when he’s watching volleyball videos studying

He likes to hum or and make up idle little tunes, when he can’t sleep he takes a deep breath and sees how long he can hum out one continuous note, sometimes he puts a hand over his neck too so he can feel it

Loves the sound of rain against glass, HUGE audio stim, if you ever see him with headphones in there’s 90% chance he’s just listening to that instead of like actual music or something

Kageyama:

Pressure stim!!! The weighted blanket he got for his 12th birthday is the only damn reason he got through middle school

Literally will sit with gym mats, volleyball bags or whatever else he can find stacked on top of him during breaks and cool downs, it’s soothing

Chewy!!! He’s in the habit of carrying around chewing gum after getting into trouble one too many times for chewing on the sleeves/collars of his shirts

Chews pens and has absolutely gotten a mouthful of ink before

He’s a stomper too, if he gets overwhelmed he just likes the physical sensation of lifting up a leg and hitting his foot back down again

Y’all know that thing where you sit or lie with your legs out straight and bc your heel is pressed into whatever surface it’s on you sway your leg side to side? That

Tsukishima:

King of audio ASMR, listens to it while he’s studying, while he’s working out, while he’s walking home, literally constantly

Clicking his tongue is actually a stim lol, he likes the physical sensation and the ‘tch’ sound it makes

Also sways side to side, by their 3rd year he and hinata have a Rhythm so they’ll just sit next to each other and periodically bump shoulders

Spins but only when he’s sure he’s alone, he’ll do so many turns clockwise then spin the same number of times counter clockwise, used to do it more often as a kid but got embarrassed as he got older

He slides his glasses down his nose and then pushes them back up again, Akiteru has SO many videos of him idly doing that as he eats or watches TV

Ushijima:

Likes to swing his arms back and forth when he’s standing still, sometimes if he’s sure the sound won’t bother anyone he claps his hands to when they meet in front of/behind him

Flappy hands when he’s really mad or upset, the team has seen it a grand total of One (1) time and since then have vowed to make sure he never gets that overwhelmed again

If he’s sitting against something he’ll very lightly knock his head back into it, he doesn’t understand why everyone gets worried when he does that, he knows to not hurt himself

Mild echolaila, he likes the weird-old-man-phrases coach Washijou spouts and just goes for hours reapeating random sections of them back to himself under his breath

Can also be heard muttering ‘mirakuuruu boī’ when he’s on the court because Tendou is a terrible influence

Speaking of Tendou:

BIG OLE ECHOLAILA, he and Wakatoshi are like a positive feedback loop of just saying ‘naisukiru’ to each other with a different emphasis each time as they study

He’ll stand and place both hands on a table and push down as hard as he can. Does it give him stiff shoulders? Yes, is he going to stop? No

Flails his arms around a lot when he’s happy or excited!! Has once or twice gotten too enthusiastic and smacked Semi in the face by accident

Another verbal stim is just,, Yelling, he doesn’t do it all that often but occasionally he’ll step out of practice and all you’ll hear from outside the gym is just one long ‘AAAAAAAAA’ before he calmly goes back inside

Hoshiumi:

Not to project or anything (haha) but bouncing + flapping his arms when he’s excited/happy!! Best stim for getting expressing the Good Emotions TM

Runs his hand through his hair a lot, he KNOWS it’s soft and he likes the texture

He tugs at his ear lobes when he’s just sitting in class or at lunch, he’s entirely unaware of it and has managed to chafe the skin before because he’s not realised he’s been at it for hours

Has like a million fidget cubes, loves the lil light switch ones because he likes the clicks

Has a fidget spinner too but they got banned at his school >:((

He’ll sit cross legged, put his hands on his ankles and sway in a circle when he’s overwhelmed, he finds it very soothing even if he does eventually get dizzy

HQ Chapter 372: Let’s talk about this picture

i know i’m really late with this and it’s probably already been discussed somewhere and i just haven’t seen it, but hear me out real quick:

in haikyuu chapter 372 the probably most eye-catching thing is this picture. it doesn’t look like a social media post but more like a text message since we can see the text bubble in the upper left corner with the time stamp next to it. and since it’s saying “look who I found in rio!” we can assume that it’s either a text from hinata or from oikawa. but which is it?

3. “Please, don’t leave.”

(I’ve been having a Bad Autism Week where im just meltdown city so heres some vent writing plus platonic kagehina)

Hinata gently touched Kageyama’s arm as he pulled his things from his locker in the club room.

“Why are you doing this?” he whispered, “I thought we were a team.”

Kageyama’s shoulders hunched over in a bitter combination of exhaustion and resentment.

“You should know now, better than anyone, I’ll never change-”

“You have changed! This isn’t middle school anymore, remember?!”

“Oh cut the crap, Hinata. I’ve known since I was a little kid that no one wants to be around someone like me. Why is volleyball any different? I just hate that of all the special interests in the world, mine had to be a team sport.”

He was holding back tears as he zipped up his things, leaving a stunned Hinata in the club room.

“So that’s it? You have one meltdown during a game and suddenly you’re going to quit volleyball altogether?! What is wrong with you?!” Hinata’s voice became more and more elevated the more frustrated he got.

“That was the third years’ last match, and my selfishness cost them that! I wasn’t thinking of others when I should have been! I’m nothing more than a tyrant king-”

Hinata grabbed Kageyama’s cheeks, smushing them in his small palms and not letting go despite Kageyama’s efforts to swat them away.

“You’re not a tyrant king. You’re Kageyama Tobio, a brilliant setter who happened to have a bad mental health day. You’re a human being. Daichi-san, Suga-san and Asahi-san would not want you to react like this.” Hinata added as an afterthought, “Though I suppose your reactions aren’t necessarily your fault to begin with.”

Kageyama huffed, finally managing to push Hinata’s hands away. 

“The world isn’t meant for people like me,” he reminded him, slinging his bag over his shoulder and making his way towards the door.

“Do you really want to quit?” Hinata asked him as he was passing, “or are you trying to punish yourself for no reason again.”

Kageyama halted by the door, his hand freezing just inches from the knob.

“Well?” Hinata put his hands on his hips.

A choked sobbing sound sound coming from Kageyama confirmed Hinata’s suspicions. He sighed heavily, and gently walked over to Kageyama, placing a hand on his trembling shoulder.

“Please, Tobio, talk to me, let it all out. Just please, don’t go.”

Kageyama dropped his bang, where it landed by his feet with a dull thud. He allowed himself to be pulled into a hug, leaning into the comforting touch and never wanting to leave the warmth of another person’s arms.

“Okay.”

“Mmmm, it’s tasty,” he grinned, his lips smothered in a thick smoky glaze.

“I was going to eat that, Kuroo-san!”

“Want some?”

He puckered his lips and Kageyama huffed.

“You’re insufferable.”

His lips met Kuroo’s, but all he got was the taste of BBQ sauce and wasted opportunity.

“Meat thief,” he grumbled to himself as he tried to swipe some of Hinata’s.

“I love you too, babe.”

So a while ago I went back to reread a few of the older haikyuu chapters just for the fun of it, but while I was reading I picked up on a couple of things I didn’t notice the first time I read it, specifically with this page.

I know not a lot is known about Kageyama’s home life except for a few gestures the animators throw in and a few headcanons but thats just it. And this page really struck me on a lot of possibilities of what his life at home is like.

The first thing that gets my attention is that the lights are on, obviously someone must’ve been waiting for him (or possibly someone else) or was just courteous enough to leave the lights on for him. 

The second thing that got to me was that even though he literally slammed the door and is stomping through the house, no one greets him back. I know he didn’t announce that he was back but he made his entrance blatantly obvious. Note that the house looks pretty quiet too, there’s no noise going on besides what Kageyama’s interacting with.

The lone pair of feminine sandals and the single key shows that he’s probably an only child, living with his mother or he’s like Tanaka and is living with an older female sibling/relative.

But despite the fact he’s not greeted doesn’t mean they’re not looking out for him, since they obviously found the lil tykes poster and brought it back for him. Whoever brought it back obviously supports him playing volleyball, and even if they’re not there all the time but their intentions are good at heart. And even though Tobio just leaves the flyer on the ground, he recognizes the efforts they made and goes to the gym the next day.

I think its p neat that Furudate leaves in subtle details like this, it really gives a depth to what a character is like without outright stating it. Sorry, if someone’s done this already, but I just felt the need to point this out.

There are so many things to talk about this chapter but I think the most important one is Hinata teaching Kageyama that it’s okay to be the king of the court and Karasuno agreeing with him.

Like this poor boy has been trying desperately to shake off that nickname for over a year because he associated it with bad memories of a time when he was selfish and mean (which is arguable because we all know he’s just a bad communicator and probably dealing with aspergers). but suddenly, in struts his rival/partner with a SWEATY USED TOWEL CROWN and he just plops that fucker on his head and tells him it’s okay to be a king, and that he doesn’t have to keep running from it.

AND LOOK HOW HAPPY HE IS.

Karasuno is such a good team for many different reasons but the amount of love and support they have for each other despite their flaws is their greatest asset.
