haikyuu is cool because you go and read things like "talent is something you make bloom, instinct is something you polish" "because people don't have wings we look for others way to fly" "today you are the defeated. what will you become tomorrow?" "we are the protagonists of the world" "and if you get really really good, someone even better will come and find you". and you read about how like. kageyama was learning to love again after it was ripped away from him and hinata was learning that he could jump high enough to become the sun itself and oikawa and ushijima and atsumu and kuroo and everyone else were all learning and trying and living with the hopes of becoming something greater than they ever could have dreamed but that something greater wasn't about winning it all it was about how they were so intricately tied that they will forever be part of the same path no matter how many times it splits and it's THE reason they are able to keep moving forward no matter what they may face. and then you're just expected to continue your life afterwards like nothing HAPPENED.

we know nekoma and seijoh are teams that emphasize a strong defense, which is what makes them such difficult opponents for karasuno, but what really intrigues me is how both teams revolve around their setter in ways that other teams don't, and yet i feel like nekoma and seijoh couldn't be more different in terms of how their team is built around their setter.
at nekoma, the team is built in a way to make playing as easy as possible for kenma. kuroo has his little speech about how they're the blood, and they need to flow smoothly in order for the brain (kenma) to work properly. kenma may guide them, but the team moves to support him, to be there when he needs them to be.
as for seijoh, oikawa builds the team himself. he's their captain, their leader–he even runs practice. whereas nekoma revolves around kenma, oikawa leads his teammates. he matches his plays to their strengths, using them as best he can, demanding that they make themselves available where they need to be.
the setter may be the control tower of the team, but each control tower is different.

top 5 haikyuu moments !! (can be particular scenes or episodes or arcs) :D
OKAY!!! so i had to gather visuals for this one bc i have many feelings about this!! I went for scenes that no matter how many times i watch, they never lose their magic for me, no matter that i know theyre coming, it still takes my breath away and makes me roll around with delight, these most of these i feel like are probably pretty obvious ones, they were meant to be impactful but ough, if they dont tear me up in the best way
SO IN NO PARTICULAR ORDER
1.
Tumblr media
I mean, what can i say??? what IS there to say?? theyve been teammates for a few weeks at this point, but hinata has given all his trust to kageyama and in turn, kageyama promised to use it to its full potential. its also a promise for their rivalry!! like, okay okay okay think about it, with the context we have with Kazuyo, kageyama has *already* decided that hinata is going to be his someone better! he sees it innately and he wants to draw it out of him, and he's, hes trying to be *hinatas* someone better too!! do u understand *shakes you* do u see what i mean!!! i mean, im sure u do, im definitely not the first person to go insane about this and ppl have probably also said it in a way thats smarter than me but just, ough
2.
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
its,,,, its,,, the acceptance of it all,,, i just think about how *alone* kageyama must have felt after his grandfather passed, we see and know that hes not good at connecting with people. hes bad at communicating and hes sensitive and he's scared of getting complacent. like, the all youth camp arc and atsumu calling him a goody-two-shoes is kageyama struggling with how he is changing, how hes trying to incorporate the influences he's gotten from his betters, and he cherishes it, but he's also felt like the advice he'd been given didn't also mesh with certain parts of himself. or, thats how i read into it, anyway. he tries so *hard* to be what ppl need him to be, and he's *so scared* of being rejected again. and this is hinata (and the rest of karasuno) telling him "HEY! we like you! we think you're smart and you dont have to shoulder connection all on your own! let us help you connect with us in a way where you feel comfy too :)" and then they talk about how they want communication! and it works!! and i just *rips into a pillow with my teeth*
3.
Tumblr media
HINATA'S PERFECT RECEIVE!!!!! so the inarizaki match is probably my favorite?? there are so many good moments but *this?* you wanna see me go insane? do you want smth thatll make me tear up? every time!! its just!!! a beautiful culmination of all of hinatas hard work that he's put into during the year! its his change of mindset! its his growth!! he's fallen a level deeper in love with volleyball and ive fallen a level deeper in love with his character
4.
Tumblr media
halo around the moon <3 Tsukki's block, his hard work, his character arc and development and everything is just *chefs kiss*. i remember the first time i watched the show, i,, *hated* tsukishima, and i think we definitely arent supposed to like him at first, but GOD does that turn around!! and this moment just feels so *earned* and *epic* and in the end HE STILL ISNT SATISFIED!!!!! he STILL wanted more!!! this point was worth 100 god fucking damn!!
5.
Tumblr media
im talking about the inarizaki match again!! but this time with a focus on Tanaka, who kind of struggled with this match! he was in a low place during it, felt stagnated and lame. Tanaka, as a character, i would say is best characterized by his mental fortitude and stability, funny enough. He's wild, but i think part of his visual design lends that as his base (since he's often compared to buddhas/monks). But in this match, we get more depth, we see him falter and struggle! it takes more than just a slap to his cheeks to get better (tho tsukishima does point out that he gets out of his depression pretty fast) but like, tanaka uses meaningful cognition to break his rut, and its also just like, advice that I've seen used for stuff like any kind of creative block as well. The visual during the animation, he's climbing up the stairs, he's slowing down, he's coming face to face with a canyon, a plateau. He sees two options, give in, or push forward and he picks "the cooler" one, and struggles forward, forces himself ahead! and kageyama backs him up too, by not letting him back down, assuring him that his usefulness hasnt reached its end and AUGH I LOVE A TEAM YALL
okay thank u so much for the excuse to ramble about haikyuu moments that mean everything to me <33333

When I was rereading the Brazil arc for the 6th time, it dawned on me that in some ways, Hinata's arc is a foil to Kageyama's. Kageyama growth is in learning how to fly with the flock, and Hinata grows when he leaves the nest. Some of his biggest catalysts for growth come from outside his established groups:
restarting his middle school volleyball team
practicing with the Tokyo teams at summer camp
learning tempos with Ukai Sr.
the ball boy arc
Kageyama learns by getting comfortable with the idea of being part of a group. Hinata grows by leaving the group and diving into new experiences all by himself.
At first I, like probably everyone else, was like TIMESKIP. BRAZIL? WHAT. But if we think about the above, then it isn't super out of the blue. It's another example of Hinata striking out on his own like he's always done. Once again, Hinata purposely takes away his own solid foundation - literally (swapping out the stable court for the unstable sand) and figuratively (going to a place where he won't know anyone - or so he thinks ,':D).

rewatching haikyuu until international battle of the garbage heap international date is released - s1ep1
(I'm not sure if I'll say something super deep while rewatching, but I'm mostly just chronicling my rewatch. I'll probably continue this after the international date is released, I just want to see how long it'll take lol.)
Seeing the first match between Kageyama and Hinata, I really appreciate how Furudate writes both deuteragonists to be loveable, compared to other manga where the two main characters start off as totally antagonistic but mellow out as the season progresses. You can see how even if they are rivals (and still are rivals despite being teammates in Karasuno), they share the same passion for volleyball and respect the players that challenge them.
One moment that really stays with me is when Kunimi (I think that's his name? The middle part guy?) doesn't put his full effort into chasing a ball that Hinata managed to get past their blockers since Kitagawa Daichi is clearly ahead and he thinks they don't need to put in their full effort. If the other team wins, it'll be a miracle. In response to that, Kageyama says: "[t]hat last point was no miracle. He scored a genuine point."
You can really tell that he (and Hinata as his foil) doesn't want to lose, that every point is important to them. Kageyama, despite getting the nickname "King of the Court" is still showing a genuine, roundabout kind of sportsmanship.
Some nice foreshadowing that I noticed on rewatch is that when Izumi messes up a set but Hinata uses his innate athleticism to reach the ball, Kageyama says "[h]ow is he there?" Thought it was a nice nod that when put together, Hinata can connect to the quicks that most players find difficult and that he'll be the first one to remind Kageyama after his team gives up on him that Karasuno and Hinata won't give up on him so easily.
Also thought that Hinata was such a good senpai to the three little first years! I thought that it was sweet that Izumi and Koji show up in season three to support Shoyo in the Karasuno vs Shiratorizawa match, but I wonder what it must be like for you to join a volleyball club in middle school as a first year, and then the next year hear that your former captain went to Nationals and is now a volleyball beast. If that doesn't motivate you, I don't know what.

vol 13 is THE daichi volume so like expect all my reread notes to be about him lol. There's not much actual analysis happening. All that being said, it's so neat the way that Furudate reinforces Daichi's importance to the team via back-to-back matches. First in the Johenzi match where he's Terushima's foil and then in the Wakutan match where Takeru and him and similar to each other. In the Johenzi match, he's basically Kita to Inaraizaki, the steady foundation that cools them down and keeps them grounded and in the Wakutan match, he's strategically amping them up and using some psychological warfare the way Suga and Oikawa do in the Seijoh/Karasuno matches.

Choice breakdown pt 4 - Kageyama
Kageyama’s frames from my Karasuno five ‘choice’ video !! Drawing his eyes in this diamond-shape was surprisingly hard, oof - but I also like that he’s a little less expressive than the others overall, though of course there are subtle differences, and I had fun drawing his pupils differently each time.
Video here!
CONTROL: for the first round of more ‘obvious’ word associations, Kageyama gets ‘control’ as a nod to his position as the ‘control tower’ of the team, as well as the incredible control and skill he displays in his setting, AND the control he feels he needs to have over his middle school team.
LOVE: potentially a less obvious theme- but something I think is truly very central to Kageyama’s character. He loves volleyball, he loves his teammates, he loves Hinata - he’s just ill-equipped to deal with those feelings and to express them properly. I wanted him to look more vulnerable/caught off-guard as he feels uncertain about how to respond to his own feelings or how to show them
BRAIN: back to more of a comfort zone - again, associated with Kageyama’s skill and intelligence on the court, as a contrast to how ill-equipped he is to deal with his feelings outside of it. I wanted his pupils to look kind of robotic, nodding to how he ‘calibrates’ on the court in season 4 which I found a really fun detail, and how much he’s thinking about the layout of the court.
WAKE UP: Kageyama gets this one as a call to get out of his own head. He can get trapped in his thoughts and his emotions, becoming fixated on things to his detriment, like he does when he refuses to change his and Hinata’s quick - and, of course, his treatment of his teammates in middle school. This ‘WAKE UP’ call can be seen as him ‘waking up’ in a horrible way when they turn on him, realising that he’s been behaving like a tyrant - but also in a more positive light when it comes to his teammates at Karasuno. It’s a call to wake up and remember his teammates around him - both to ensure he doesn’t become a tyrant, but also to remember that his new friends care about him, and are sticking around.
Yamaguchi / Tsukishima / Yachi / Kageyama / Hinata

The thing about Oikawa that makes him such a good antagonist personality and skill wise is his ability to read people and relationships. His skill at reading people hones his setter skills and the ability to serve his teammates and give anyone he plays with the tosses they desire. And this same skill is what he uses to read people like books and get them to the pages he wants.
Now, as a teenager he’s obviously very annoying with it but there’s no true villainy he really commits. Like where’s the sabotage? The psychological manipulation? The breakdowns of others? Really the most he does with this skill is pick at Kageyama (while giving him advice!) and…*checks notes*…improve his volleyball team. Like, that’s all he does with what is a terrifyingly impressive skill.
Genuinely I think y’all are aiming at him for his potential to be truly villainous.
The fact that his particular people skill is a scalpel in the hands of actual villains is twisting perspectives on an 18 year old who is just really really good at volleyball.

what are ur thoughts on kiyoko as a character?
oh this is an interesting one!!! long post under the keep reading because i have lots of thoughts on kiyoko and women in haikyuu (the rest will prob get their own post)
in short, i think that kiyoko as a character is interesting (the confidence the dedication) but also limited by sexism in the narrative!!
kiyoko’s character is nearly entirely defined by her femininity and existence as a girl. when we first meet her properly, she’s objectified (hinata and kageyama staring at her chest and body). as the story progresses, she continues to basically only exist as an object of attraction + a source of motivation for the boys. she has a personality, but it’s a bit generic in that she’s shy and quiet and responsible (’ideal female character’). her most notable moments mainly involve the boys’ attraction to her (hinata shutting down when she tries to encourage him, suga’s comments about marriage).
and finally, she is plagued by the pervert trope. or rather, tanaka and noya embody the pervert trope and she is the victim of it. most of kiyoko’s screentime, especially in the earlier seasons, is dedicated to tanaka and noya’s attraction to her and the way they act on that. constantly being overprotective (taking away her agency), violating her personal boundaries (noya leaping at her and getting slapped + the ensuing respect the boys give noya after it), and generally treating her as more of an object than a person. yamamoto is an example of it too! it’s a common (and problematic) trope in anime and manga, and generally most forms of media. i hate it!! while this is all a gag and for the sake of comedy, it doesn’t change the fact that kiyoko’s character mostly exists in this context alone: either to be motivational because she’s attractive, or to be a subject of harassment because it’s funny and she’s attractive.
kiyoko gains more depth by season 2, when yachi is introduced. yachi is a fellow girl - around her, kiyoko’s behavior is more open. even then, though, yachi’s first reaction upon meeting her is objectifying her like the male characters do. she highlights all of kiyoko’s physical traits, even calls her sexy, sexualizing a girl she has never met on the grounds that she’s attractive. and sure, as the fandom we find it hilarious because it’s. clearly gay! but it’s part of a pattern in the story where kiyoko’s existence is nearly completely defined by her being a pretty girl.
we can’t forget how s2 also brings johzenji, and consequently, terushima (+ bobata) who outright harass kiyoko in a way that women/afab ppl/etc are ALL too familiar with irl. they corner her and refuse to understand that no means no, and it takes hinata’s interference to get them to stop. even after this, terushima continues to harass kiyoko, and it’s played for laughs. even smaller moments that involve kiyoko still objectify her. oikawa’s current concern pre-timeskip? kiyoko turned him down. yahaba and kindaichi comment on karasuno’s luck in having a beautiful female manager. over and over again, we see kiyoko defined as an object of attraction instead of as an actual person.
this OF COURSE leads me to season 4!!! when she gets her moment to shine!! there’s her moment at the shrine, where she displays her absolute confidence in her team in like. the most fucking awesome way possible. and then there’s the whole revelation about her being an athlete! and having her own passion and skills! and while i think that this is a great moment for kiyoko!!! and for her character as a whole!!! i do not think it outweighs the sexist tropes and treatment that surround her character throughout the whole of the story. it follows her even to the timeskip.
in fact, it follows her even to the fandom perception of her. if you go to her page on the haikyuu wiki, you get this stellar entry: She is most commonly described as an extremely attractive, albeit "erotic" girl who would often garner a lot of attention from both male and female students; including from other school teams. Because of her appearance, Karasuno High is generally known as the team with the beautiful manager. It’s absolutely mindblowing to me (not really. it’s to be expected) that a teenage girl is sexualized like this to the point where she’s described as ‘extremely attractive, ableit “erotic”‘. why is it even ‘albeit’. please tell me they’re not implying that people finding her erotic is a negative trait for her. pls tell me that the wiki is complaining about people sexualizing her. please.
anyways, kiyoko as a character is cool! she just. barely exists! we know that she’s funny, but only because she loosens up enough around yachi (another girl) to be that way! we know that she’s confident and determined from the way she speaks about her team when the show gives her the chance! we know that she’s capable because of all the responsibilities she shoulders (well!!!) that. barely get any attention. (because remember when she cooked for the whole team??? which. of course she cooks for them.)
so it’s just tragic to me that she gets treated in such a way by the story. like, sure, at least she gets more attention than narita, but. most of it is just sexist.
also btw im so curious about who sent this and what their thoughts on my response are. i’d love to see some feedback, even if it’s in the form of another anon ask or something like that!! or dms! sorry that this ended up being such a downer and a discussion of. sexism and misogyny.

okay no see the thing that made me really, really sad about hinata and the thing that made me really, really root for him and love him and want to see him win it all was how, like, people kept DENYING him. and i'm not talking about spectators in the stands going "omg he's so short haha, can he really do anything?" i'm talking about how his own team and how everyone who knew them in some way - as much as i love them - could never really separate him from kageyama. they were the freak quick duo, karasuno's number nine and number ten. they were amazing! so brilliant, the two of them. and hinata thought it was a way out, at first. he thought it was a way over the summit. he thought it was the key to being someone better.
but a key goes both ways, you know. it can lock you up just as much as it can set you free.
and hinata had to be so, so frustrated. everyone was finding ways to move forward except him. everyone expected him to stay stuck. and you could argue that that's not entirely true, sure, that he was always training, always trying to catch up, and they encouraged that. but nobody ever expected him to be more. nobody ever expected him to go beyond what he had with kageyama - they all thought that was enough for hinata. they thought he was fine like that because it worked for the rest of them. they underestimated how much he wanted to be capable. they didn't get how much he wanted to stand on his own two feet.
and that wasn't fair to hinata! it wasn't fair that hinata, who loved to play and loved the game and loved volleyball so so much, was the only one being left behind! he wanted to change that but nobody was trying with him!!! so of course he got impatient!! of course he was reckless!!! of course he was carving his own opportunities!!! there was no way forward otherwise!!! because if we take a minute to think about how training would have gone while kageyama was at tokyo, let's be honest — it probably wouldn't have gone well. nobody else can do with hinata what kageyama could do with him. hinata would have been held back. he would have felt useless. practicing serves and receives was stuff he was already doing constantly before that, and it wasn't teaching him anything. yeah hinata was a little bit selfish and a little bit shameless but being so finally got him somewhere!!
all hinata ever wanted to do was fly, even if it meant straying from the flock to do so

i know that we love to talk about how much kageyama learned from suga, but it's important to remember that it went both ways, because suga learned from kageyama as well.
when we first meet suga, he's (quietly) shouldering the blame for asahi and noya leaving. kageyama shows up, and suga's relieved that there's a setter better than him because he won't have to handle that responsibility of guiding the ace, of getting the ball to his spikers. he thinks that maybe he can fall back into the shadows, because karasuno has a genius setter now, so what use would they have for a regular one?
and yet.
kageyama wants to fight suga for the position. "the gap in experience between us isn't that easily overcome!" "suga-san, you better not be doing this to give me the position." he knows he's good. but he still respects suga, as a senpai, as another setter, and kageyama knows that he has shortcomings in areas that suga excels at.
and he says as much to suga. and suga promises to fight him for that starting position.
by the time the shiratorizawa match comes around, suga has gained so much more confidence. but he admits that he's still scared of being blocked and he does not have the same unwavering faith in his spikers (in himself) that kageyama does. he acknowledges that it is a relief having kageyama there.
and yet he steps onto the court anyways.
because suga doesn't give up. even when he's scared (not anymore).
and what happens is this: suga goes to spike (something he is terrified of) and tendou blocks him. and suga simply promises to do it again. and when the time comes, suga runs forward without hesitation, and tendou leaps to block him, because to him, the ball has to be going to suga.
(and then it doesn't, and tendou realizes he was wrong, and suga's smiling and promising to do it again.)
when we first meet suga, he's relieved that there's a better setter than him.
in a few months' time, that is no longer the case.

OH MAN!!! this got me thinking my little thoughts.
i wonder if kageyama first thought that oikawa was gonna be his "someone better" that kazuyo promised him. its obvious that as much as kageyama doesn't like oikawa, he admires his skill, and so he spends so much time chasing after oikawa, hoping for his guidance and advice.
and maybe thats the rub, oikawa didnt find kageyama, didn't *want* to, who had his own pride to contend with, who wanted nothing to do with kageyama in middle school.
and im thinking about despite his talent and prodigious status, kageyama remained... unremarkable in his middle school years. at least, to the trained eye, he was good, but with flaws that outweighed his skill
and then when he goes to karasuno hes "found" and thats when he really starts to come into his own and BLOOM AND AUGH

The Nekoma-Karasuno match is pure joy.
I love how it starts out tense and dramatic: Kenma's sinister plot to shut down Hinata! The spooky birdcage imagery! I love all of that! But I also love how that all gets blown away when Hinata makes his escape. From there on out it's 100% fun and love of volleyball and connecting all these players who were once strangers. And despite the grand stage, that's what the match has always been about.
It's how the tension of the earlier matches is gone because the dumpster battle was as much of a goal as getting to nationals, and now that they've made it happen, they can all let loose.
It's the scenes of Kuroo and Kenma as kids, becoming friends and falling in love with volleyball at the same time.
It's Kenma trying harder than we've ever seen before and Tsukki smiling wider than we've ever seen before.
It's Kai giving up his spot to Inuoka with a proud smile and a heartfelt "good bump", a huge compliment on the team that prides itself on its floor defense.
It's everyone showing off their skills and showing their open, unabashed respect for each other.
It's the flashbacks to the summer camp, culminating in that beautiful spread where all the noise of nationals melts away and it's just Nekoma and Karasuno again, just like any other game.
It's the Nekoma third years knowing they've left the team in good hands. Now that their younger teammates really know what the team motto is all about, so they can walk away content.
It's "Yeah, we're all rivals here. But, at the same time, each of us are, to the other, a teacher" and "Let's go out there and play the best volleyball of our lives" and "I hurt. I'm exhausted. I don't ever want this to end."
It's how the game ends on a random stroke of bad luck, because the match itself was always more important than the outcome.
It's the way even Lev--sunny, often oblivious, unflappable Lev--got so invested in his team that he cries at the end of the match.
It's the Suga-Yaku shoulder bump and the Shibayama-Asahi bow of mutual respect and the big hugs all around.
It's the way both Ukais shake Coach Nekomata's hand.
It's just pure sincere unfiltered joy and I can't reread it without smiling ❤️🤍🖤🧡

oikawa and his impostor syndrome
as much as i love shiratorizawa and inarizaki's match, nothing can ever top seijoh 2 match point for me. the music, the camera angles, the tension, oikawa's bloom, with a hint of funniness, are all so unparalleled.
not to mention, oikawa's impostor syndrome. i find it soooo funny that the two people who oikawa is so insecure about, which is ushiwaka and tobio, actually respects oikawa a great lot because they know that oikawa IS great (and a monster). toruu's ability to read his players AND opponents, then use their strengths and weakness, is nothing sort of amazing; these are the things ushiwaka and tobio initially did not have.
besides, i feel like toruu overestimate tobio a bit much ?? Like during middle school, tobio was playing volleyball out of love, while toruu was doing it out of pressure, so of course tobio came off bette during middle school.
regarding the seijoh ii game, it was just like oikawa said, karasuno, as a WHOLE, was just a bit better than them and that's why they lost.
regarding shiratorizawa vs seijoh, my main argument for seijoh's loss here is that they've been fighting each other since middle school, and mayhaps they've been so used with each other, hence the fact that they always lost. and i will have to say that before kyotani, seijoh did lack the offensive power and unpredictability karasuno has.
and if seijoh did end up in nationals, i strongly believe they can win the 1st and 2nd rounds (as long as they ain't facing sakusa)
in conclusion, i strongly believe that oikawa was just as great as tobio and ushiwaka, oikawa just had his own insecurities and couldn't appreciate himself fully. mayhaps we do the same thing with ourselves, being insecure and focused about others that we fail to see our own greatness.

i was randomly thinking about this anon ask a couple months back about nice and heitor's proposal mirroring kghn.
I agree with previous me's stance that the two things if anything, intentionally have opposing sentiments. Kagehina's promise is about cementing each other and volleyball's place in their lives + the entire premise is about victory ie hinata is going to keep with volleyball so he can eventually defeat kageyama. On the other hand, Nice and Heitor's proposal is explicitly the complete opposite where it rejects the importance of victory and argues that volleyball shouldn't be all there is to life. I'm gonna pull up the panels so you can see.
For comparison this is kagehina's promise
Tumblr media
and here is heitor and nice's
Tumblr media Tumblr media
But on reflection, I think anon's point had some merit to it. Nice's proposal might not mirror kghn's but it does apply to them because in the end, hinata's victory wasn't an ending for kagehina and was rather just a blip on their neverending story of life and volleyball with each other. Sure victory and defeat matter but they're not the end all be all of life.
Plus, chapter 397 shows us that what Nice says about thinking Heitor's amazing whether win or lose, 5 years ago or 10 years from now is true of kghn too. Hinata's been trying to reach the pedestal that he puts Kageyama on, much in the same way Heitor has to prove himself worthy of Nice but Nice and Kageyama have thought they were great the entire damn time. The pedestal didn't matter (even when it did).
So yeah, idk if anon still follows me or if they ever did but I hope you see this!
