When Petunia was younger and she learned about potions from Lily/Sev she secretly, on multiple occasions, tried mixing together a bunch of random ingredients (or even stole a textbook and tried to follow the instructions with her limited access to the proper tools and ingredients) in the hopes of proving she had some sort of magical ability.

It obviously didn't work.

Cut forward several years when she shares the embarrassing story with Severus, her now-or-eventual boyfriend, who smiles and asks if she wants to assist him in making real potions.

She does.

(Petunia helping him grow ingredients in their garden?? Petunia being his official assistant and opening an apothecary together?? Starting a family and it becoming a family business that spans several generations??)

It was nineteen-eighty and Tuney wouldn't shut up about Lady Diana Spencer. Her clothes and her hair and her poise and how elegant she was and how some people just couldn't help having a short neck.

Lily knew that meant her. Tuney got the lovely long neck and the elegant hands and the slender feet and ankles of Dad's mother. Magic was better than any of that, Lily knew, but just once she'd like to be the one who could pull off a Diana lookalike style.

And to make everything even worse, HE agreed with everything Tuney said.

Snape. Bloody Snape. Tuney got the elegant features and stole him, too. It was enough to make anyone sick, as Jamie said.

And they had to go to dinner that evening. She'd much rather stay in her own home and entertain Sirius and Remus and Peter than go home for dinner. He'd be there, smirking sardonically from across the table whilst Tuney prattled on about her work and his experiments!

Experiments!

She knew who funded him and his experiments, because Sirius was ever complaining about his grandfather and the Black House Scholar. He'd got everything he ever wanted. The swine.

He didn't have her, though. And she didn't think Tuney would ever be able to announce what she was going to. This time Tuney would be the jealous one.

Lily waited until her roiling stomach settled before she tugged Jamie's arm, pulling him away from the car parked at the curb. He and Sirius had gone mad over automotives after they'd done…something…to a motorbike. She pulled Jamie to the door, nervous excitement replacing the faint nausea apparition caused these days. She knocked briefly before she opened the door and stepped into the house.

Unlike the lovely home she and Jamie had, they practically fell into the front room from the door.

They were there already, Severus looking smug and Petunia…Petunia wearing maternity clothes and a satisfied glow.

No.

No, they couldn't have.

"Oh, Lily and Jamie, we're so happy you made it. Petunia just shared the most wonderful news!" Mum crossed the room to them, hugging them both. "They're expecting!"

Lily wanted to scream. What had she ever done to deserve such torture?

Petunia smiled to herself, knowing she and Severus would have a good, long laugh later. They didn't even have to do anything to wind her up, just sit there and look happy.

And she was happy, finally, in the strangest way.
