My god, SOOOOOO MANY. There are songs that reference Louis like a bait (tolerate it: took this dagger in me and remove it. Like Louis’s tattoo. hoax: my twisted knife like Louis wrote about in 1D’s Love You Goodbye) Songs like kindred spirits of Louis’s Habit: Come so far from Princess Park (Champagne Problem: This dorm was once a madhouse, Who’s Afraid of Little Old Me: You wouldn’t last an hour in the asylum where they raised me. also the black dog: old habits died screaming in connection to Louis’s copy of a copy of a copy: I can hear you howling til your lungs hurt. Then there are songs about LouisandHarry as a package deal.

Lover: Miss Americana and The Heartbreak Prince (written to Louis from Harry’s POV), it’s nice to have a friend (oh look at the gays-in-blue wedding in you need to calm down mv. I wonder if this song was written for that particular ceremony. Leeds tent, mario cart/fifa video games, pass me a note on couple tattoos, like)

Fearless (Taylor’s Version From the Vault): That’s When (I know the OG was written way before Taylor and Louis ever met, but she said she revised the lyrics and significantly tweaked the meaning of this song, because her own perspective on needing space and time has changed. Do you protect each other’s solitude? And it’s like the perfect answer to Louis’s Always You.)

1989: Out of the Woods (written from Louis’s POV, special shoutout to my favorite line the rest of the world was black and white but we were in screaming colors), I Know Places (written from Taylor’s POV first then applied Harry’s POV (the rewinding tape sound is very much an I think I’ve seen this film before and I didn’t like the ending re:swiftgron sunken ship “something happened when everybody finds out”) then she tried to change the ending from Peter losing Wendy aka Taylor losing Diana by switching POV at the very end, just like Harry/1D did in Something Great, to Louis’s POV aka the new Peter) but it wouldn’t been fun if i could’ve been the 1.

Sounded like Taylor was dealing with being almost out of the closet, so close but so far with the whole thing came crashing down. And wondering how did Louis & Harry deal with almost getting to come out, only to be shoved so much deeper into the closet. How did they make it through TOGETHER pass all that bullshit AGAIN?)

This one is purely my highest hope that it was written for LouisandHarry (given how Taylor usually released a song about two to three years after she first drafted it) and also applied to TaylorandKarlie now

actually fucking furious at an otherwise incredible genealogist right now who has done a lifetime's amount of work and research for Métis. She's pulled up the 1950 census that lists Buffy Sainte-Marie as Beverly J. Santamaria and is like "how sad this italian woman became a famous cultural icon"

1900 Census straight from Ft. Fucking Shaw Indian Residential School. Angela Nedow (Nedeau). Indian child aged 6. Names are misspelled all the time.

The same ancestor ten years later. Name misrepresented now as Angelina. Race listed as white.

Residential school did such a great job at assimilation it changed her entire race, right?

Ralph Huntley, mixed Yurok and Scottish. This photo was taken in direct sunlight next to his white wife Henrietta and you can observe with your eyes how much darker he was even while mixed. His father was brown enough to lie and say he was Mexican because it was safer for him to be seen as Mexican than as a Yurok man. Due to the terror and racism of being seen as Yurok I am honestly not sure if his father ever actually talked to him about how they were not Mexican and in fact from Northern California, but regardless Ralph is listed as white on census reports and on his draft card. White with a "ruddy" skin tone.

The shit that I've seen on census reports has been frustrating to no end. While casually trawling some of the earlier ones in Humboldt county page by page, you know what I saw when I got to the pages that were the communities largely comprised of Chinese immigrants?

Not a single name, sex, or age was listed accurately. The census taker instead wrote down a term I'm not going to repeat here and then just essentially went " " down the whole page. Is it much of a stretch to imagine the census takers being a little dishonest now and then? Is it a stretch to imagine a child adopted out of her community into a while family in Massachusetts, knowing nothing, would be listed as white when she has no other information available to her?

None of us know what is going to come out in this CBC report but at the end of the day the Piapot Cree still claim Buffy and this is only going to cause further harm.

"but if she wasn't actually born on the Piapot reserve--" I don't care. I do. Not. Care. She is a member now. She has family there. I still grapple with feeling like I don't have a dog in this race because of my own disconnection story but I don't really care about that at this point either. Gail Morin should know better.

Whatever comes out in this program is going to be a hot topic conversation for a while but it's only going to serve at silencing other people who are struggling to repair their broken connections. Tribal nations are going to be even more wary about people who have legitimate claims. Everything is already broken so why the fuck are we breaking it even more?

EDIT: I've seen the broadcast. Not at all surprised that Keeler and Tallbear were in it, and I'm also really annoyed that Talliet specifies online she's a niece of Riel but the stupid fucking broadcasters says she's a descendant. Louis Riel has no direct descendants. You put in all this time and effort into poking through someone else's history and trauma and don't even catch that in the final edit before you start the show? My original point here still stands because it is exactly people like Keeler that pull these tactics without digging into the historical context of why our ancestors would have been identified the way they are in reports.

Walking back feeling, I am so thankful. I've already won the lottery. Honestly, I am here walking to the shops to get milk digestives and hand soap.

Thinking to myself, how wonderful it is for me to be in this position. To be able to have the money in my pocket to have the choice. To make the choice in my mind and be able to experience it in the physical. I was watching Flat Share and had had a Zimbabwean chocolate digestive which I had placed in the fridge because when I do eat chocolate it must be frozen or at least very chilled.

I was indulging in one thinking ohh my goodness there aren't many left and Zimbabwe is not down the road so what is my next option. I then took myself upstairs to continue watching Flat Share a show I had started watching earlier on this week. hmm... or was it last week. Anyways. I couldn't get them out of my mind and when the episode I was watching finished, I got dressed and started walking to the nearest supermarket After chatting with the enthusiastic children that had visited their grandmother. I continued on my path.

I chose a playlist which featured poetic heartfelt songs. With the first song on the list being Nat King Cole-Pretend'. A song I was introduced to by Bob Proctor during one of his life affirming seminars. I was overcome by the emotion of appreciation. Deep gratitude whilst listening to my playlist. ''Nat King Cole-Pretend''. ''Ella Fitzgerald ft Louis Armstrong Cheek to Cheek''. ''Frank Sinatra- My way''.

I began to think. We get so consumed I thought with wanting to make more money to assert our position on this planet. To have that gadget and that outfit and hit those numbers. Date this person and that person etc.... However, after taking in a deep breath. I remembered that you know what there's so much more to my existence, so much more to our existence 'Louis Armstrong's what a beautiful world' was playing as though it was serenading my being connected with self or rather truth thoughts.

There's so much more, that we miss and do not prioritise. Listen to the birds, the cars, just to be alive is a gift. A gift so overlooked because consumerism and capitalism has become our God. What we strive for can so easily be replaced and yet time. Time is something we can never replace or replicate.

What happened to our child like wonder, our curious desire to discover, learn and investigate. ?

When was the last time you looked up, paused and looked at the sky for a minute.? When was the last time you looked at the details of the lines that run across both your hands. How and why where they formed, which one of your ancestors in your gene pool played their part in this ? Have you ever wondered about the life force that flows through you and what happens to it when you're faced with a lifeless corpse whether it be a human, insect or plant. ?

Hmmmmmmmmm, I wonder with gratitude of course. I've won the lottery and now I know. I am grateful for where I am, with the wisdom I have learned

Ray's Discussion Leader Presentation

Pink Floyd - Another Brick in The Wall, Part Two

Another Brick in the Wall Part 2 by Pink Floyd is the second and most prominent segment of 3-part rock opera written by the bassist Roger Waters as a criticism against both corporal punishment and his experiences in a rigid, abusive schooling environment.

The video depicts children gathering or fleeing away from a creature dressed in a black uniform who appears to be controlled by puppet strings. The creature is likely implied to be a “teacher” the lyrics point to as it is then shown stuffing children into a school-shaped meat grinder which results in a writhing pile of formless material. Next the teacher transforms into a hammer and a large wall the same color as the ground material is shown closing around a child. The children shown before sing a verse and then move again, possibly returning home to take shelter from the marching hammers being commanded by a hammer-shaped speaker.

The German Ideology by Karl Marx

In The German Ideology, Karl Marx argues that “Life is not determined by consciousness, but consciousness by life” (Marx, 1932) meaning that a person’s ideology will always be influenced by the world around them and how they behave instead of the other way around and I believe that is what we are seeing here.

“Thought-control,” as used in the song, means the attempt to restrict ideas and impose opinions through censorship and the control of school curricula which is depicted as an extreme, teachers being used as tools to literally transform children into bricks in a wall; which is to say: unremarkable, conformist, complacent to someone else’s design.

The tone is a deep contrast from the previous video, but I found many similar connections to our readings on ideology in this video and will attempt to show a tie between these two pieces.

The Lonely Island - Boombox (ft. Julian Casablancas)

Clearly, being a comedic piece, it’s harder to try and view it critically and take anything seriously from it but I interpret this as another perspective of the “grinding” of individuality down into bland roles and social scripts, one that even suggests a solution! The world depicted in this video is the objective of the unseen puppet masters in Pink Floyd video: where wealthy old money white people remain in power, people are too stoic and lethargic to cut loose, people who can’t take care of themselves anymore are thrown into facilities where they get taken advantage of, and all there is to look forward to is bland boiled goose! The premises are all depicted in a humorous way, but they do reflect a somber reality.

There is hope however, in the form of Andy Sandberg’s boombox containing a song and turbo bass so powerful that it can destroy preconceived notions and bring people of all walks of life together (and summon fingerless gloves for everyone to wear). It’s even shown in the video how he first opens up the minds of the people in power using his music before taking to the streets and getting everybody involved! The bricks and hammers are being being freed and given the power to do whatever they want to do and think what they want to.

Ideology and Ideological State Apparatuses by Louis Althusser

“However, while admitting that [religious ideology, ethical ideology, legal ideology, political ideology, etc.] do not correspond to reality, i.e. that they constitute an illusion, we admit that they do make allusion to reality, and that they need only be "interpreted" to discover the reality of the world behind their imaginary representation of that world (ideology = illusion/allusion)” (Althusser, 1970). Now obviously, there is no magic boombox, hammer people, or school-shaped meat grinders but they all came from somewhere within their writer’s minds. Andy Sandberg uses humor to address oppressive pipeline that Roger Waters initially conflicted with, though they work at opposite ends. Pink Floyd asks that the kids are left alone and not turned into bricks, while the Lonely Island attempts to free the bricks through the power of art and expression. Though they deal in different tones and methodology, their ideologies are similar, both fighting against the system that Marx’’s ideology pointed out all the way back in 1932.

“Every new class [as a result of revolution], therefore, achieves its hegemony only on a broader basis than that of the class ruling previously, whereas the opposition of the non-ruling class against the new ruling class develops all the more sharply and profoundly. Both these things determine the fact that the struggle to be waged against this new ruling class, in its turn, aims at a more decided and radical negation of the previous conditions of society than could all previous classes which sought to rule” (Marx, 1932). The characters Andy Sandberg and Julian Casablancas play may be revolutionists, but they’re not perfect leaders either. The final segment of the music video depicts the duo’s disgust at the sight of elderly people making love, which is understandable, but could possibly imply that they don’t have everyone’s best interests at heart if going forward they decide based on factors such as age or sexuality, who they will and will not uplift using the boombox. Progress has definitely been made, but now what underlying issues with the duo will arise when the next revolution covering even more people’s needs will occur?

New anon here, but also on the topic of the fall:

I keep getting snagged on one detail. In the last my episode, Daniel says Louis fell from “a thousand feet” the way the fall is visualized on the show, though, looks like the cruising altitude of a plane. Now. I keep thinking about how even if everything happened literally as shown (which: I think it all happened I just think there’s more to the story), Louis had likely never been in a plane before. Had probably never seen a skyscraper* in person let alone been in one. His perception of the fall will be altered by the fear of just being in the sky. Even if (and again I don’t think this is what we’ll be told) he was lifted 10 feet off their roof — that’s terrifying.

Now of course, Louis lives in the sky.

*I looked it up and the highest skyscraper in Louisiana is only ~700 feet and it wasn’t built until the 1970s.

Even Trinity Gate were three townhouses iirc, and as you said, the skyscrapers were fairly recent. So Dubai is a definitely interesting choice, as is Dubai itself for the laws there, too. (I do wonder sometimes if the apartment was chosen bc someone thought the "flying vampires" of the coming apocalypse could not fly so high?! Though of course Armand says that the others would just scale the building. Still. It's a bit of a defense position they have there.)

Ultimately I don't think it matters much if it was 1000 ft or 10 000... for Louis' state of mind. (Logically, I'd argue it was probably closer to 1000 or even less bc Louis was far from a "strong" vampire then, and he would have shattered.)

I keep coming back to the obvious (for the ones that have read the book) parallel that is to come still... and that was. It's just a very interesting detail to connect them, and it would open up ways into Armand's past (and thereby Lestat's), which is why, as you said, it likely happened, just not... like this. Maybe 😅

For me the viewpoint change is very interesting, too. The fight itself is from Claudia's POV, obviously, and then up in the air, it's Louis'. And Lestat's whole... makeup/look is different. I know it's part of the POV visualization, and it obviously fits, but... just weird.

((Also, forgive me Louis, but the "I didn't know he could fly"... naww. Not buying that. Not when the first time was the best time ever and he talks about having floating sex again in episode 6. But that's... probably another subject :))))

Singles, but I listen to new albums front-to-back when they come out and really love concept albums or when albums have a connecting thread through the songs.

I buy vinyl records! Mostly because they’re pretty and I can get a better look at the album art tbh. I still have my CDs which is nice because it’s the closest I can get to hugging a song/album but I rarely buy new ones.

I’m not sure. Most of what I listen too came out in the last 20 years.

The Neighborhood Watch s3 ep10: Battle Stations

[Summary: The Cast clears away some enemies, and in the morning discuss further plans to investigate the Casino. Louis and Song connect some dots, Markus helps Ken, and John visits Emmett.] @gr3y-plays-ttrpgs ----

The Main Cast (ft Lestat and Grayson) all get into position to use the affixed and various guns of the safehouse. We decide that Louis gets to use the Huge Laser Gun because his stats are best equipped to use it, and also it would be funny. There's three armored tanks and an assortment of people outside, including the mailman (who is still trying to get us to turn in Song). The Cast prevents the people from leaving the main area and/or gathering up to make plans (which results in our mailman getting killed Oops-), and at one point the people send out a mind-controlled Sammy to try and fight us- but Song uses telepathy to enter Sammy's mind to attempt to stop him. His mindspace seems to be coated in a strange gel, which she tries to chemically burn away in order to help him. When she exits, smoke is pouring out of Sammy's mouth (he's alive but currently immobile), and Song has a bit of a nosebleed. There's also a moment in which we see one of the neighbors, Phillip, look out from the window before ducking away.

Louis has a blast (pun absolutely intended) destroying most of the tanks, and then it's over!

Markus is concerned about Sammy, and we debate on if we should let down the safety measurements (which we Just set up again) in order to drag him inside and make sure he's safe. Markus settles for calling Sammy's husband a bunch of times instead. Eventually John goes to clean all the blood off himself and check on Shelby, and we all head off to sleep (except for the polycule.) ---

Markus is the first of the Main Cast to wake up in the morning, and finds a sad Kenneth in the kitchen. Kenneth reveals he feels useless, which really sucks for him because he finally thought he had found a group of outcasts he could maybe bond with. Markus says he is useful, just not for combative scenarios, and apologizes for being a dick the other night. We learn his clairvoyance only happens the first time he touches an object. Markus makes coffee for everyone.

Louis, Song, and Lestat all slowly enter, wearing each other's clothes; John notices this as he walks in but doesn't say anything. (Grayson, who was alseep on the couch, finally wakes up.)

Markus explains the details of Kenneth's abilities, and suggests Ken touch the body of the mailman to try and get more information about the Casino. We'd have to set the wards down, but we also reason there's no way Melody would try to do anything drastic in broad daylight. We decide to have breakfast and take down the wards after to see what Kenneth can do.

As Markus gets to cooking, there's a sudden knock at the door- Song speaks to whoever it is telepathically, and we discover it's Phillip. He assumes the telepathy is just a speaker-security thing. He mentions all the noise from last night (he seems to believe it was just fireworks, despite seeing it all go down last night), and anyway he asks if Song would be able to babysit his daughter, or knows anyone who could do that- he's thinking of going to the casino. We all start yelling for him to not go, so Song tells him it's practically a scam. This man decides to shoot his shot and asks Song out for dinner (she politely declines), and Phillip finally makes his way back to his house. As he walks away she can hear him mentally beating himself up like "God of course she'd say no :-("

John goes to wake up Shelby, and asks her how she's doing; she says this is a lot to take in. He gives her a hand squeeze, and they go off to eat the breakfast that Markus made for everyone.

Markus looks crushed (/hj) after Shelby makes a joking comment about how the breakfast doesn't have any waffles, and explains to everyone what they made is actually a dish from their home country- and then they realize they backed themselves into a corner when Song asks about it, and they admit they're from Romania. They had to leave due to a bad spot they were in. Song asks how Analita's doing, and Markus says they should call her; but she's tough, like them. Song mentions texting Amira again, and Markus calls Heath to ask if Sammy got back home. Heath is confused, saying he and Sammy got home together (he's got no memory of the casino escapade from last night it seems), but mentions Sammy seems to be a bit sick today- he invites Markus over for later in the day, perhaps, and Markus is like "yeah sure ty" before quickly hanging up.

It turns out Song had stolen a poker chip some point during last night, so Kenneth touches it to see if we can get any info- but it's nothing special, just the chip being passed around. It was worth a shot, and Kenneth suggests we go back into the casino so he can quite literally get a hold of someone who would know a bit more.

["hey louis," markus says across the table. "are you good at kidnapping people?"] (Louis says kidnapping is more difficult than murder, so it's off the table for now.)

The Cast gets to talking about how to sneak into the Casino again, wondering which one of us wasn't caught sneaking around- but all of us were, really. John suggests he could shapeshift into something akin to Harold in order to get into the casino, and Shelby's surprised by him being able to do that. [She chokes on her drink. "Sorry, what?" "I- love, did you not notice I had feathers last night?" "It was a bit of a blur-" "Ah, yes, well, new thing- I can shapeshift." He takes an awkward sip of coffee.]

Song, solely curious about his limitations, asks if John can shapeshift into her (and Markus is curious, too). John offhandedly and nervously says he can't, he needs to eat the thing first, before remembering he did take a bite out of her neck about two months ago, and maybe that would be enough... Grayson doesn't seem happy that John (now even more nervous) attacked his daughter earlier, but Song is all "dad chill, he's my friend." Shelby, meanwhile, seems to have lost her appetite and is realizing that it wasn't a bobcat during the Season One finale.

The Cast agrees to meet back up at 4 if they're going to part ways. Song texts Amira a quick hello, and they agree to hang out later in the week (she's trying to make sure this robot girl stays safe). Amira exits the convo by mentioning her parents want her to do chores, so they did come home after being controlled by the casino, just like Sammy- Markus suggests they and Kenneth head over to try and clairvoyance one of the Sampath adults.

The wards of the safehouse get dropped, and the party splits ways- Lestat slips away to the basement. The Cast finds that all the damage from last night is gone- there's not even a single scorch mark on the pavement (So there goes the corpse clairvoyance idea from earlier). People are out mowing their lawns, etc, normal suburban stuff.

Markus spots the Patterson household and decides to go there instead, since they hate Mr Patterson so why not? It'd be fun to freak him out. ----

John decides to go visit Emmett, and Grayson tags along because he knows the security system of the place (given how it's tech from the same company he had worked for at some point). Song once again lets her father know John's cool, she can handle herself, and the two of them head off. [Grayson claps a hand on John's back. "Alright, let's go for a walk." John hides a wince- that was right on the runes on his skin. "..Got it."] ----

Song and Louis head down to Lestat to compare everything they learned from the casino escapade to try and make a better plan, compiling a floor plan, etc. Song decides to look into Louis and Lestat's memories of the casino to see if there was anything they spotted that she didn't; and because of the established rules, memory sharing is a two-way street, so they also gets to see Song's memories of the upper floor and interacting with her mother.

The polycule both agrees to delve deeper, and Song shares with he boyfriends anything she can remember about her mother. There's a buried and hazy memory of Song's mother, Melody, talking to a woman with black hair and a graying man with a pinstripe suit and cane as an infant Song watches- that same man was in the background of one of Louis' memories from earlier in the campaign. Lestat's never seen the man before, and it's not Mr Dark, either- the man in the memories looked different than him. They all ponder what the hell it could mean, how the same pinstripe man had shown up in both Song and Louio's pasts. ----

Markus hides in their bushes as Kenneth knocks on the door of the Patterson household and says hello, trying to actually formally introduce himself. Kenneth shakes Bob's hand and freezes- it weirds Mr Patterson out and he slams the door shut. Markus pops up from the bushes again and Ken sifts through the memories he just got, getting a bit distracted by all of them.

["I don't think there's as many vampires around BECAUSE of this guy!"]

Markus gets him back on track, and Kenneth mentions there were complete blanks in Bob's memories- probably from the casino- and he mentions a man with a cane and hat. The Cane Man was talking to a man and a woman, but that's all he's got. Markus reasons that if no one in town would remember due to the memory blanks, they should try to talk to a casino employee- they would know what's going on. He thanks Ken for this info, like "see! you're useful! :-)" ---

Meanwhile, Grayson and John have begun walking over to Emmett's house to check in on the AI. Grayson says he knows John's a Hunter, as he's got that on file-John says he likes being human and has no plans to go back being a monster.

["Good, good! Just to let you know: I'll kill you ever hurt my daughter again." "Not if I take myself out first."]

They get to the AI's house and find a small stack of boxes by the door. They're all addressed to John. The doorbell/security system doesn't work; After failing to pry open the door and learning that the system's too advanced for Grayson to figure out, John finally decides to open the boxes.

In the first one is a tape recorder, with a recording of Emmett explaining that something happened to his systems and so all of this is being delivered as a failsafe. He addressed them all to John because he trusts him the most. In the next box is a large cylinder, some kind of sci-fi container to put something inside. In the next boxes is a crimson leatherbound journal inscribed with runes similar to the one's on John's back, and a manuscript titled The Journal of Douglas Baxter- the name of the man who built this suburb.

Notes/Commentary:

It was fun with the guns tbh. Our DM vastly overpowered us lmao

incoming taylor swift (ft. louis tomlinson) rant

ok so this is a bit weird but i've been thinking about it a lot - the fundamental difference between taylor and louis is their upbringing. i do not mean their family (obviously the difference between that defo impacted their behaviour) but rather their wealth, their class.

taylor loves her fans, she has this connection to them that artist of her level do not obtain. she has secret sessions, interacts with fan accounts online, she does meet and greets, and the 22 hat giveaway each show. she loves her fans. and i do not doubt that. but it becomes difficult to understand it when everything is so expensive and ultimately not worth it.

i never even tried to get eras tour tickets because i knew there was no way in hell i'd be able to afford even one ticket. i knew my parents wouldnt be able to afford it. ever since the announcement i understood that this was something i'd never get to experience. i'm not saying the eras tour doesn't deserve these prices - it's an amazing 3 hour live show, but as an artist who prides herself on her connection with fans it seems a little... disconnected?

and then i cannot even afford to get a cd with all the songs from an album because she has 5 versions of an album. and not a single version that has every song. it makes sense, it improves sales, and collectors get a bigger collection. but once again, not something you'd do when you think you have such a impactful connection with your fans??

with louis, yes i still had to save to afford tickets im still poor after all, but it was something that i could save up for - it was affordable. and it logistically shouldn't be. it's cheaper than noah kahan's tour, fuck man it's cheaper than when evanescence came to brisbane. louis gives fans cupcakes (!) and water bottles, he does free meet and greets after shows, he interacts with fans on social media (sometimes very sneakily apparently). but most importantly, its affordable. his merch isn't cheap but it's worth it (i cannot say the same for most of taylor's collections), he doesn't force you to buy multiple cds of the same album to hear 4 different tracks that aren't on streaming (and seemingly will never be?? taylor put you're losing me on spotify). he cares about his fans in a way that i think taylor cannot because she grew up within a higher class.

and i understand that taylor is constantly criticised - too much is still not enough - but as a life long (and poor) fan this is something that has kinda annoyed me for a while now. yes she is better than most big musicians, especially when it comes to fan interaction, but it's upsetting that i will never ever get to see her live, that i will never ever get official merch, when i can do these things with other artists i adore less than her. idk stupid rant but its over now
