Shangri-La Frontier mid-season review

This is by far the best fake video game I've ever seen written in fiction.

Most MMO-centric isekai stories have trouble with providing accurate and realistic depictions of the complexities and minutia that give MMOs the allure they have. I've seen so much handwavey bullshit tacked onto fake-games that introduce unrealistically overlooked mechanics for reasons like giving the protag immense power just because they're the protag and the story is about them. A good example of this is another MMO Isekai airing this season, "A Playthrough of a Certain Dude's VRMMO Life", wherein the main character becomes extremely rich, powerful, and famous by episode 2 because he stumbled into a stealth archer playstyle, a build which apparently no human in that universe had ever conceived of before, and then making a fortune by selling basic potions to everyone after NPCs stopped selling them (another thing he was uniquely able to do because not a single other player had the forethought to spec into alchemy). These lesser, dime-a-dozen isekai add up to be boring fantasy strories with gaming elements clumsily put in so that the author can demonstrate how powerful the world's inhabitants are by showing their stat allocation screen instead of, say, explaining anything about what they do that's so uniquely powerful and how they figured it out. Ya know, stuff you'd hope to hear about from any competent story.

Shangri-La Frontier is a breath of fresh air for anyone who, like me, is sick of authors ignoring the things that actually make video games compelling in service of creating a stock-standard narratives in fantasy worlds because it allows them to get away with bullshit. I've always found it very convenient that many isekai narratives indulge in things like chattel slavery, because it's societally normal enough for the protag to purchase a beautiful, vulnerable girl to add to his harem (dont worry, she is always inexplicably in love with him no matter what because he's SUCH a kind master). And it never really seems to go anywhere. Because the Video Game Isekai, while an interesting premise in theory, is more often than not used exclusively as a means to simplify the structure of a world's power scaling to abide by an arbitrary set of omnipresent universal rules (e.g. what people who have never cared to look into game development think of video games). This anime, by comparison, is VERY clearly authored by someone who plays a LOT of games.

Every piece of logic used to drive the plot forward, so far, is congruent to a real-world example of video game conventions, and I'm not just talking about levelling up and selling monster parts. Story elements that I've rarely (if ever) seen explored in other isekai are ever-present and genuinely clever and amusingly introduced. My favorite example of this so far has been the way the protagonist has been able to go head to head with so many overlevelled foes in the first 9 episodes. The story of course makes note of how good of a gamer Sanraku (our hero) is, but much like in real life games, being super duper good at dodging attacks doesn't really make up for a 70 level gap in items and learned skills. For that reason, he gets his ass whooped more often than he actually outsmarts others (so far he hasn't beaten a single player in pvp). So how is he getting out of these situations without dying so frequently? Simple: he got access to a later area too early relative to his level (sequence break) and got access to a high level follower NPC that's been carrying him. This is something he acknowledges directly several times, specifically using words like "Emul has been hard-carrying me for a while." This, to me, is extraordinarily meaningful. That's something you can exploit in Skyrim, man. That's REALISTIC CHEESE STRATS. The excitement and wonder I find in this show doesn't come from watching the protag do something unexpected, but by watching him do something that I would think to do.

This knowledge the author has demonstrated regarding modern gaming culture extends further into the actual realistic nature of game design and community. The story exists in a reality where full-dive VRMMOs are the be-all-end-all of gaming, and given the prohibitively expensive nature of developing and designing expansive, immersive worlds, most games are pretty shit. It's been hinted at so far that this is due to a monopolistic megacorp which is one of the only entities rich and powerful enough to make a good game (the game in question being the one that shares the title of the anime), but so far the strife of the characters have been pretty centralized to the happenings of the game world and its politics. By the way, lets talk about the game world's player base politics, which I'm also quite pleased with. It exists in the form of guilds and clans who struggle for power not by participating in seemingly random pvp with other powerful players to see who is the most epic and badass warrior (again, like many contemporary isekai typically opt for), but by gaining actual realistic support from a fictional playerbase with realistic desires and playstyles. Some guilds are interested in lore, some gather for alliance and boss raids, some for things like animal husbandry, and (naturally) at least one is dedicated to trolling and PKing. Each of these factions, through the very little that we've seen of them so far, communicate on forums and only know as much as is reasonable for them to know. The only reason they give a shit about the protagonist at all is because he gained access to a high-level unique scenario quest that they want information on how to access, and the only reason word of that got out in the first place was because someone posted a screenshot of him with a unique NPC onto a forum, asking about it as "where can i find this pet summon, its super cute!" That's real. That's video games, baby.

I like this show a lot so far. I like that it cares about video games, but I also like its writing. I like the main character and how hes less of an ultra badass super cool guy, and more of an earnest challenge-run lets player. Like, a lot of his dialogue straight up sounds strikingly similar to Japanese youtubers. And he's naturally always quick to point out inconsistencies in the game world's logic. I ALSO really like his community of pals from a janky old fighting game, and I ADORE the girl from his school who has a crush on him and also just so happens to be an exceptionally high level player from a top clan, and how she had to spend 9 episodes working up the courage to send him a friend request. I love that so, so much, dude.

I highly recommend this show if you're into a single thing I've mentioned. The animation is great. The world is beautiful. The character design is immaculate. And I'm looking forward to watching it continue.

bit of thinking outloud but for my current tactician run im doing a special wyll origins playthrough im calling the Evil Wyll Run & it’s given me a lot of food for thought about his character (or at least the freedom of psychological movement + exploration afforded to an origin run!)

wyll spoilers abound we’re entering the wyllenium here

wyll always felt a bit underwritten to me - i know that’s partially because there was that big kerfuffle in the 11th hour with changing his whole story and personality on top of having to recast his VA, and frankly hats off to both original VA lanre malaolu & new VA theo solomon for their hard work - both brought tremendous performances, & i sincerely hope mr malaolu was paid well for his work & time even if his voice wasn’t used in the final cut (i would also say warlock as a class itself felt a bit underdeveloped but im 100% OK with chalking that up to me the player not understanding how to play warlock effectively yet lol im more of a fighter barbarian Hit Stuff guy)

but honestly this feeling of being “underwritten” combined with a character with a long history of heroism in his pocket made wyll really interesting to me even in my tav playthrough. for all his accomplishments he still feels like a blank everyman, or like he’s someone who fully believes he’s the main character who doesn’t “need” to do any extra work on himself - and honestly he feels Very much like he could be The Main Character. once his backstory of the son of the duke was revealed too i immediately got the sense of like, rich boy trying to prove his worth beyond his wealth and status by striking out & becoming that hero, or that Prince Charming. basically that perfect happily ever after somebody. and im of the opinion that you don’t get mixed up with a cambion in the first place unless you’re either the kind of naïve “everything will just work out” immature that tends to comes with his status as the son of a noble, or you’re hungering for power. depending on playstyle he’s very easily both of these things

on the naïve front (ie a good wyll playthrough) if anything he feels very believably immature, & from that perspective the events of the game feel as though they’re the prequel to the actual start of wyll's story where he finally finds himself & learns what kind of man he really is. we just dont get to see it alas, but i really enjoyed the thought exercise of somebody still grappling with overcoming his own immaturity. he feels like someone who can still grow and that his tale is just beginning

Evil Wyll (meaning any time mizora shows up he drops everything to enact her instruction & hasnt once tried to find a loophole out of his contract) which ive come to be far more fascinated by is someone clearly vying for power, which is interesting because his noble status would’ve given him all the power he wants had he Played Nice. to me it speaks of someone who wants to be able to take what he wants from life without it being handed to him, which contrasts in a really fascinating way with entering into a warlock pact at all. maybe he thought it was better that it be a decision he made as opposed to nobility given to him by his family ties, maybe there’s still that pollyanna sentiment of “it’ll just work out & ill live happily ever after.” again maybe both. maybe in a sense the fiend, as he calls himself, is a good excuse to shuck off any poor decision he makes or any genuinely heinous thing he does under mizora’s instruction - an identity he uses as power fantasy (and very much in tandem/interchangeable with the blade of frontiers power fantasy) until it means taking ownership for any of his misdeeds, and then a scapegoat.

may be a bit incoherent but im only now hitting act 3 in my origin run & im Really enjoying this difficult characterization ive cooked up for myself lol

It's all "links meet aus" and "zeldas meet aus", but where's my "companions meet aus"?

I wanna see midna bash fi and navis heads together for annoying her

I mean can you imagine the sheer chaos of all the Zelda companions meeting and going on a journey together? They're all companions/guides! One of thems a talking hat for hylias sake how are they supposed to take initiative?

I think it'd be like Lu where they all just meet up, but can you imagine the chain just somehow finds out this happened (and twilight is just like guys I am so sorry about midna) (but they're also really oddly touched that all their friends met each other too)

Pretty sure midna would be the sort of leader, since the last time she was in a foreign world she just found the nearest dude and started ordering him around. By like halfway through twilight princess she was literally asking LINK to accompany her to get what she needed.

But like. 90% of the group would be fairies. Which can't heal. One is a talking hat who just needs a head? He can't go on midnas cause she throws him off with her magic hair, poor ezlo is just trying to keep up.

They also have these weird green shadows who come around? They don't talk, but there's a rock, a fish, a bird, and a lady who just appear and stab things and shoot wind water fire and lightning.

Also midnas really confused why wolf link just shows up and kills things every now and then (from botw amibo)

Fi is the one who can talk to Hylia and awaken memories and get guidance and information or whatever, but she only does this by ballerina dancing and the others are always pissed at her anyways "WE DONT KNOW WHAT BATTERIES ARE OR A WII REMOTE WILL YOU PLEASE GO BACK IN SWORD FORM ALREADY" "I detect there is a 90% chance you need a key to open this door" "wow. Your perception is unparalleled fi."

Also there's a boat. A boat. Who is also good at taking charging since he's a king, which causes some friction between him and midna, since she has to grab him by her hair to move him half the time.

And with the fairies. Again. They all offer advice mainly. And with the fairies a lot of their main role is speaking and getting attention and pitching in? They come on an intersection and there's a chorus of bells all shouting the same directions. Ezlo is trying to cover the kings ears from his place on the boats head

Also there's this ghost/spirit of Zelda that everyone just feels REALLY strong loyalty to. But she's just like this kid who wants her body back?! They try to protect her but she can turn into a purple knight and stab things so there's that. I think there's also some animal companions from ooa/oos so.

Side quests are nonexistent they don't care about a village or gathering frogs for a kid they are there to save the world on a mission linear plot it is

And it's interesting because you have so many of them who just vanish and then appear to give loud advice. All at once. And the fighting skills basically fall to those weird green shadows that shoot various elements and fight and randomly disappear. Midna and spirit Zelda can fight, and Fi can too (kind of like how she fights as a sword in hyrule warriors). Also up to you if midna is drop dead gorgeous or devilish imp.

By the end they find whatever enemy so they can go back and midna is so pissed by this point that she hears the word "batteries" from Fi and goes full on fused shadow and just obliterates the jerk

***I have not played all the games so do not know or understand all of the companions and probably got some stuff wrong

Bonus: there is a child in a village named Link who does not have the spirit of the hero. He is stalked for three days until Fi decides his vibes are off and they all stop telling him he's the chosen one

I honestly hate how the fandom treats Michael as a hero and I'm seeing posts about it so I feel a liiiittle better talkign about it

my moots are holding back, i can tell. but hes my favorite so im not. and im a little pissed writing this bc. bc i relate to cc a lot. and seeing ppl mischaracterize not only my favorite character but also someone who reminds me of people who fucking suck drives me INSANE.

so psa, im pissed as fuck and i love michael afton.

First off, he killed Evan. That's obvious. Not only was that literall 100% his fault (NOT WILLIAMS IT PISSES ME OFF WHEN PPL MAKE THAT ALL ABOUT WILLIAM SHUT THE FUVCK UP

he was a bully. yeah he was a kid. yeah he was messing with him. Have you considered he was literally. abusive to his brother. i know the fnaf fandom is scared of using that word to describe him but its fucking true. he was abusive. as fuck. that was awful what he did he wasnt just a bully he harassed him and literally locked him in his room. he was fucking horrible.

and yeah, he didnt mean for that to happen, but not only was that stupid as fuck, i hate any interpritation of "he wanted to be like his dad" "his friends coerced him" PLAY FNAF 4. PLAY FNAF 4. FUCKING PLAY FNAF 4 LOOK AT HIS DIALOGUE AND WHAT HE DOES

did he apologize? yes. he said sorry. he felt bad, sure. but when you kill someone tehy dont come back. evan deserves to never forgive him ever because that was dumb as fuck and HORRIBLE. IT WAS HORRIBLE. ABUSIVE. ILL SAY IT AGAIN

so, on the 'creating characters who dont want to act' thing, i dont think this is a thing inexperienced players do on purpose. I think they often dont really think about why the character is going to go on this quest and its very easy to accidentally end up with a character who has no reason to do something or who might even be actively opposed to it. its something that you have to pay active attention too during character creation. (note: most of my ttrpg experience is with dnd)

Yeah, I don't think anyone does this on purpose, but it's interesting to me that newer players come to D&D and other adventure games with the idea that their character needs an extrinsic motivation to act beyond the adventure itself. Like, the game is about adventuring and adventuring is fun, why would I create a character that doesn't want to go on an adventure (unless me and the GM are working towards my unlikely hero being drawn to adventure against their will, in which case it is still partly my responsibility to put my character in situations which would lead them on an adventure against their will).

I think this intersects interestingly with another phenomenon in RPGs where players (and this is sadly true of some experienced players as well) will offload responsibility for their actions on their character, as if their character emerged out of the aether fully formed with zero agency on part of the player. What players should be taught since day one is that they are always in control of their character's actions. Did you accidentally create a character who has no reason to be on this adventure? No, you didn't. You can always come up with a reason for your character to do something. It can even be as simple as "I, the player, would think it would be more fun if my character went on this adventure, so my character will go on this adventure." The role-playing cops can't read your mind, they won't arrest you.

Now obviously this is reciprocal between all parties, but I think we need to talk more about player agency and how motivating your character is not something you can always offload on the GM. It should always be an ongoing conversation with the GM, being candid about your wishes for the game and supplying your own motivations. Heck, the GM doesn't need to hold all narrative agency in their hands, you the player can say "hey it would really motivate my character at this point if someone they cared for was in danger!"

Anyway point being, teach new players to make proactive characters so they will learn to be proactive players. You can do anything you want forever, your character isn't in charge of you, you are in charge of your character.

Hear me out guys.

Shoto being your boyfriend is one of the cutest yet kinda overwhelming thing ever, especially when you go out with him because he loves you so much and wants you to have everything you want. Now that he's working as a Pro Hero, he's got the money for it, that or he's gonna use his father's credit card. He loves doing so, especially if its for his beautiful darling.

You two are out shopping and you spot a game store, wanting to check it out you pull Shoto with you—because of course you two are always holding hands in the mall, he wouldn't want to "lose you" or have someone try to flirt with you—in the store.

What you don't know is that every games that you look at and think that would be interesting to play, he takes note of them with his photographic memories. He thinks that when you look at the price and say that you guys dont have time for that, that deep inside you'd still want it, that's why he does it.

You don't realize that he does that at first. You continue looking at things till you get to the useless but oh so satisfying section full of fidget toys and addicting little things.

He sees you grabbing onto some, playing with them then putting them back, if not sometimes showing him and making him touch. He of course sees no use to that but when he sees your sparkling eyes and little smile as you or he plays with them, its enough for him.

He ends up buying all of them.

And he will either overwhelm you all at once or make a longterm egg-hunt but with all of the things.

One. He ends up giving all of them to you all at once.

You come back home after work, walking into you and Shoto's place and putting your things away. When you go in the kitchen its only to see a couple of bags on the table. You furrow your eyebrows as you walk over and start looking into the bags.

The more you pull things out of the bags the more you realize what the bags are and who did it. You pout and feel bad since this must have cost a fortune, looking around for the culprit. When you notice he's not in the kitchen you quickly try to find him only to find your dual haired boyfriend in your shared bedroom, drying his hair with a towel, wearing a t-shirt and some swearpants. He must have just finished taking a shower.

When he spots you he smiles, that small happy smile that mainly only you get to see. His expression quickly changes as he notices yours. " What's wrong darl--" —" Shoto Todoroki, what's all this on the kitchen's table?" He looks at you, tilting his head to the side confused at first but then quickly realize what you meant.

"It's for you, of course...You don't like it?" He says sitting down on the end of the bed, looking up at you with that small sad puppy face. A face that you quickly learned that you cannot resist.

"No, no it's not that Sho!", You say as you quickly find yourself sitting on his lap, cupping his cheeks, looking down at him. "I-It's just that it's alot and it must have costed you an arm. I don't want to ruin you, love." You give his lips a small kiss before running your hand in his soft humid hair, your eyebrow furrowed as you spoke. "I thought you'd like it, you seemed to really like them when we went to the store.", He simply answers, gladly accepting the kiss but then leaning for a longer one, hands quickly moving to gently place themselves on your hips. He missed you and now that you're here he won't let you get away without giving him lots of kisses.

That was typical Shoto, you know that he would go to any length when it comes to you, to spoiling you and showing his love for you in such ways.

You pull away from him after a bit. "Can I at least pay back part of it?", He raises an eyebrow at it before a playful glint passes in his eyes. "And how exactly are you going to do that, Y/n?", Oh you know that look all too well. You giggle and roll your eyes, giving his nose a kiss and nipping it as an answer. " With money of course....And maybe a little bonus. But before...You must promise me one thing." —"What is it?"— "Don't ever do that again, buying me everything I touch or look at."

He started to pout and open his mouth to say something, but you quickly put a finger on his lips. "Do you want that bonus or not?" You say with a small teasing tone as you grin playfully at him. That hush him up and he softly grins back at you. "Of course, I won't."

And after you giving him that bonus he ends up telling you that he technically didn't pay for it, but his father's credit card did. Oh that little—

Two. Hide the things all around your place so you find them eventually.

You didn't expect to start finding all those things in your home, once a week or sometimes a bit more. At first you were confused, but thought that Shoto just was sneaky enough and wanted to give you those but didn't know how. And so he decided to do that.

Oh boy, you were wrong, especially when you started finding even more things around, some bigger and more costly than others. It both confused and impressed you that Shoto, your boyfriend, was even able to hide those from you and take time to place them all around. It was cute to think about not gonna lie, but how much does he end up spending for you everytime? You started thinking on stopping shopping with him, not wanting to ruin him, but as you were thinking that you find one of the trinkets you really wanted but refrained yourself from buying.

"Oh no, he didn't just do that.", You say as you picked it up and started messing with it, smiling as you lost focus for a while.

It would be a lie to say that you didn't think it was sweet of him to do that but first, why did he have to hide them and two...why spend money on that when he could keep it for himself?

...

When he comes back home, later that day its only to end up finding you sleeping on the couch with that red fox plushie he bought for you a while ago and the said trinket you found that day in your hand. You must have fallen asleep while playing with it.

Shoto can't help but take a few pictures of you before deciding to wake you up with small kisses all over your face. He couldn't help himself, you were just so cute and beautiful in his eyes. And he wants you to know it, even in your sleep. You end up waking up with a sleepy giggle before playfully and gently stealing a kiss. You slowly sit up, letting the trinket fall to the floor, forgotting about it now that your handsome lover is here.

"Sho, you're back...Welcome home.", You say as you stretch, yawning softly as you move to get up only to end up having a body moving on top of you. Arms wrapping around your waist and his face moving to nuzzle into your neck. "Great to be home...", He mumbles as an answer, closing his eyes for a bit before looking back up at you, admiring your cute sleepy face. He looks a bit longer than he should, making you blush a bit at the stare. You know you should get used to it but everytime it has the same effect on you, you just can't help it.

After a little bit of silence and cuddling, you are the one breaking the silence with a question. "Hm....Love, I think we have an intruder. I keep finding things I didn't buy, and that is definitely not yours, in our home.", You say wanting to see how he will react. The grey and blue eyed male furrows his eyebrows pretending not to know, before ending up making a small [°o°] face. "Oh...That. Don't worry, it's all yours.", He then proceeds to nuzzle back into your neck like nothing.

You run your fingers into his hair with one hand while the other gently rubs the male's back till it comes to a stop. "No, but seriously, Shoto...Don't use all of your money on me for that. I dont need all of t—", He mumbles something in your neck making you stop talking, raising an eyebrow. "What did you just say hun?", You ask and he repeats it, luckily for you.

"I think it's worth it if it makes you happy, you were so cute playing with all those things...", As he says that he shows his open phone on a short video of you smiling, playing with the trinkets and sometimes even giggling, showing Shoto. Your face flushes, refraining yourself from taking the phone. "Sh-Sho why do you have this? Let me see." He lets you take the phone, moving his head to look with you like he can't get enough of it. As you exit you notice that there's more short videos of you, in many places and such.

i always felt like kyle would have a youtube channel where he posts skits and short videos of his life!

which means together you would post vlogs and short clips you guys recorded with your friends.

apart from those, since kyle is very interested on guitar hero i feel like he would also post his best scores on the game and little game plays of his.

mainly the channel is filled with small moments from both of your lifes, since you and kyle only wanted to keep your memories on a small archive channel:)

Hello! Hii! You don't know because im semi new here so let me introduce myself! Hi im amistakehadhappened but you can just call me Junkie or Renren!

Anyways ive been obsessing over your 'A Player's Aid' fanfic and other works related to it and it has gotten me thinking about how i think other link's would "remember" the player! I don't really have anyone else to share my ideas with so i figured why not tell the creator of the work? I dont want to overwhelm you so I'll just talk about one of the link's for now and that one being Time.

Now Time is very interesting to me for the idea that he was one of the youngest links to start his journey and was forced to grow up fast so he could defeat ganondorf. Similarly to Wind, biggest difference is that Wind stayed a child during his entire adventure. So I think that Time would have some level of protectiveness over Wind especially compared to the others. Not just because he's the youngest but because Time hates the idea that Wind had to go on his journey as a child like him when he was younger. So overprotective dad Time.

You may be wondering what this has to do with the Player? Well heres my idea. I think that when Player was back in their world, and first started oot and/or mm, they found it odd that link was so young for a hero(assuming this isn't the first game they've played so they wouldn't consider this "normal" for link to be a child). So often they would both sympathize with the young Time and also be concerned for him. I also think that Player probably would have been very upset that Time was forced to grow up and miss out on a huge part of his childhood just so he could be a hero.

You've already confirmed that even though they dont remember the Player helping them on their journeys(besides Hyrule and Wild as of now), the Player was still very physically and vocally active during each link's adventure. Now finally i can get to what all of this was leading up to.

Imagine this: the chain plus Player are all resting at a temporary camp they set up. Most of the others have gone to sleep, with the exception of 2. Time because he's currently on watch and Twilight because im assuming wolf reasons. Suddenly Wind quickly jolts up and starts looking around the camp, to see of anybody's awake. He notices Time sitting guard but doesn't want to bother him, instead Wind goes to quietly find Player for comfort. Gently waking up Player, Wind softly tells them that he had a nightmare and can't go back to sleep. Player, obviously concerned for him, offers to try and sing him a lullaby to help him sleep better. So Wind gets comfortable next to Player and Player starts softly singing to Wind, hoping to help the poor boy fall back asleep. And finally this is what i think Player would be singing to Wind.

Player would sing Everything Stay's from Adventure Time to Wind. Now this quickly helps Wind to fall back into a deep sleep. However this song is quick to catch the attention of the man on guard, Time. Time stays quiet for the whole song but once he knows Player is done and Wind is fast asleep he makes his voice known. Briefly startling Player, Time asks where Player learned that song. To which Player responds with saying it was from their childhood.

Time scoffs at this, confusing Player before adding "When I was younger, back when I was a child, I would often hear someone singing to me a song that sounded exactly like that one. Typically I would hear the song during times where i was very stressed or scared. It always found a way to calm me down and made me feel like everything was going to be ok..... That voice sounded exactly like yours."

And the it hits both of them. Player realizes that Time remembers them and the journey they had together and Time feels like a part of him that was missing for so long has finally come back to him. After they talk for a little while longer, Time wanted to try and catch up, Player can no longer stay awake and they fall asleep again, now cuddling and very clingy Wind in their arms.

The next day it is safe to say that pretty much everyone else is very confused as to why all of a sudden Time is being very docile and friendly to the Player. Going as far as to hand them a cup of coffee and sharing bits of his own food. Acting as if they have been friends for years, which in a way they technically were.

So yeah that's my idea on how i think Time and Player would connect and bond. Just a simple lullaby that changed Time's life. I hope you enjoy what I wrote and if this was weird or something you don't like im very sorry. But i do hope you have a very good day and thank you for even giving me a brief second of your time!

Thank you!!!💞💞 I actually had alot of headcanons (most of them are about boxmore of course🤭) so here's a lil' list of the ones I can remember :

•the reason why we barely see mikayla is because she's very lazy and spends most of her time sleeping :3 she falls asleep in the most random places in the factory so the others always have to watch their steps bc if you wake her up you WILL regret it

•also her hobbies include watching anime and chasing random ppl on the street

•fink doesn't call veonmous her dad because she was scared that he doesn't see her as his "real" kid, that's also why she hates KO so much

•after darrell saw a pic of young boxlad in his sailor uniform he begged his father to buy him one so he could dress like boxman

•darrell and fink both love halloween for different reasons. Darrell loves the costumes and fink loves scary things (she always makes the bots watch horror movies)

•jethro, shannon, raymond & darrell love karaoke

•compared from ernesto and darrell, the robots dont really do alot of work in the factory

•darrell got a harmonica for christmas but he's terrible at playing it so the others always try to get rid of it but he somehow always find it

•after sibling rivalry raymond & shannon started bonding bc they realized they have alot in common. This actually made darrell jealous bc he's used to being the one who hangs out with shannon the most

•darrell can't swim!! if you take his floatie away he'll sink like a rock

•venomous enjoys talking with ernesto the most because he's much more calm and mature than his siblings

•fink called boxman "boxdad" by accident, he cried

•fink and darrell are still sharing a room

•foxtail is like an aunt to KO, she often comes to the plaza just to see him and she tells him stories about his mother's hero days at P.O.I.N.T

•shannon dyed KO's hair blond once (he looked even more like carol than usual)•darrell kept the bodega vest (that's one more costume for his collection!)

•shannon secretly has a deep love and appreciation for darrell (THIS ONE IS CANON I JUST WANTED TO POINT IT OUT!!!)

•the "oldest" to "youngest" robots according to me based on vibes : mr.logic > ernesto > raymond > darrell(barely) > shannon > mikayla > jethro > boxman jr

•rad's parents & enid's parents are literally bestfriends. They hang out together, they always call each other, and they always show baby pictures of their kids to each other.

•enid & rad play a shit ton of dance dance revolution

•boxman & mr.gar used to be childhood bestfriends who had a falling out and became sworn enemies (ok this one is based on nothing i just thought it would be a fun and interesting concept (also I wanted an excuse to draw gar and boxman as kids)

•darrell was a surprisingly great employee at the bodega (especially for someone who spent every day of his life trying to destroy it)

•he actually doesn't hate the plaza, he doesn't even dislike it he's just attacking it to make boxman happy

•all their kids actually really like jr except fink and darrell who absolutely hate him. They often conspire to get rid of him.

•Junior hates KO more than anything in the world

Hey there, and thank you for the Levi asks! I'm always down for that.

You know, I think Levi is really a unique character. I can't really think of anyone quite like him. His mixture of seeming stoicism, and strength, along with his deep, inner compassion and kindness, is really a combination I've never seen in another character. Of course, there's the whole strong, silent hero archetype, which one could say Levi falls into, but his personality really isn't like any other character I can think of. He's so reserved outwardly, but he has these deep, passionate displays of emotion, driven by pure compassion and empathy. He's violent, but he's so totally lacking in cruelty or malice. I mean, I see a lot of those qualities in Ash and Yashiro too, actually. But Yashiro is nothing like Levi in terms of personality, haha. Ash is closer to Levi's personality, but again, not with quite the same level of reservedness or even-keeled disposition.

I love Levi's dynamic with both Jean and Connie. He goes out of his way to really help those two in moments of vulnerability, and to help them grow as people as a result, and come to more fully realized versions of themselves. I really love a lot of Levi's interactions with Eren early on, too, for a lot of the same reasons. Levi tries hard to help Eren, and I think it must have been devastating to him, to see what Eren eventually became.

Ohh, I always have trouble with asks like these, haha. I'll have to check the song you suggested out! Honestly, the song from the soundtrack for AoT "So ist es immer" makes me think of Levi every time I hear it, probably because it was the theme song for "No Regrets". Also "Omake-pfadlib", again because it's the music that played at the end of "No Regrets", when Levi kills the titan that killed Isabel and Furlan. It's so tragic, so I feel like it really captures Levi's immense grief beautifully.

Haha, this is another hard one. I see people compare Levi to Gojo a lot, and that would probably be a pretty explosive meeting, haha. I can see Gojo REALLY getting on Levi's nerves, with his bubbly, obnoxious personality. At the same time, they're each carrying a similar burden of being the strongest person in their respective universes, so they could relate to each other on that front. Of having the responsibility of being the strongest, and all the expectations that come with it. I would also like to actually see Levi and Ash interact, because I think it would be the opposite, and the two of them would really get along well. They both also know the isolation of being relied upon by others, and also being feared by others for their strength, so I think it would be interesting to see the two of them together.

several! one i have been talked out of in the interest of remembering the genre-expectations of our niche, lmao, anddd ehh. like, the rest are just kind of waiting for their turn! like… western AU, sci-fi AU, stuff like that. i think the one thing i’d like to do that i probably won’t would be—a darker fic, like my explicit cannibalistic colonial revenge thing i’ve threatened exactly once before lmao. i like fantasising about losing my shit and just disappearing for six months and reappearing with a link for it, but… 😌 some dreams can not be realised, least they lose their power. 🥹

Lots happening this episode!!

MOTIONNNNN!!! Huge fan of motion coming back. The motion scream appearing since the beginning, the motion engines....even back in partizan, it always felt like she was meant to come back, and i LOVE how this is being done. the images were so good.

I like Dust! I like Occam Olio. I like the Us doppelgangers and "they are not dead. they do not leave the tunnels."

Seeing Jesset again also makes me sooooo happy thats my BOY i am jesset fan numero UNO and unfortunately he did get his ass kicked completely but he was cute while he did it and badass.

Elle showing up was beyond exciting! i love to see her!!!

Longer thoughts: The big narrative swings (not talking lucia (which i love also) bc that was last ep) were SO cool i love how immediately invested art got in the motion clock, im obsessed with the choices, jesset being put in mortal peril was honestly very fun for me (tragedy enjoyer who loves to mourn their faves)

it really is brutal how authority sweeps every faction turn. on the one hand, I think there is a really good sense of weight and scale here; the authoritarian rulers of a whole planet are not weak and easily toppled, it would be worse if they were always getting beat.

On the other hand, I don't love the way they're going about it. Art backing away from Occam having a character moment SPECIFICALLY because he didn't want to roll and lose a pillar (especially in comparison to keith rolling when he didn't need to duing the stellar combustor arc) was so disappointing. it just felt like a worse story and less fun play. I did not like that at all.

Even though the sense of "the authority is huge and complex and every victory will be a struggle" is good to me and i prefer it, it kind of sucks to feel like the blue channel only faction that DOES anything (even baseline/violet cove mission was mostly a success even though they took the baseline L) Like gucci saying "what do you think we do all day?" girl i think they had your number!! you people are seeming pretty unhelpful!!! i would like it if not just Our Heroes but the entire organization were pulling their weight.

The final thing that occurred to me during the first conflict with jade kill and then got solidified later with art is i think its a huge problem that Hexagon doesnt have more named characters. Blank Shore and Occam Olio and SIlverbrick, the attendants of Gentian, all the higher ups of the Bilats, they have all gotten screen time and exploration and interest from the players. By contrast, most of the named Hexagon members pre-exist the faction games, and they are a lot less fleshed out. The twilight mirage character jack mentioned didnt even get a name. they dont care about them, and we have no one To care about.

So i think in the end i like all the narrative turns this took in terms of big swings and choices, but the energy is leaving me feeling kind of disappointed and uninvested in the individual dice rolls and events and attempts. like i enjoy what they do with the outcomes, but getting to the outcomes this week felt pretty :/ I just wish they would care about the cause too!!! i like what they do with authority but i like the cause and i feel like we dont know them at ALL!

our one former exception was baldwin home who was an outside perspective who deepened the connection a lot, and now he's dead, so like, they've all just become pieces on a board instead of people.

#leaving mostly happy but happiness isnt as conducive to writing out thoughts. happiness just makes me go wheeeeeeeeeeee #i did like the episode i had fun i gasped i yelled. but overall theres some stuff i am tired of thats making it #less fun i guess

Alright I did it Ranking the human characters from Primal Rage: The Avatars from least to most mischaracterized to me personally:

--Kaze and Keena They're kinda just genetic "protagonist hero" and "girl" I do like a lot of moments they had overall and dont think their characters are bad for them Keena having a crush on Kaze wasn't terrible since it obviously wasn't reciprocated but I did HATE the long bit of Keena fretting about "never feeling the touch of a man" she's 15 bro she's not thinking about that pls fuck off I do think it was lacking a lot in Keena being a child (and they kinda cop-out of doing that by saying she like matured by magic after becoming an Avatar which is lame) I don't really have that much to say in general about Kaze. I thought he was fine for being the "main character" The other characters joking about him being WAY too loyal to Blizzard (to the point of joking he wanted to fuck him) was honestly really funny tho

--Shank hard for me to fault much cause like he isnt in the book a whole lot? but I do wish they'd done more with him… he's just kinda there, does his thing, and then goes away Spoilers kinda but it was really weird that he gave a false name when he met them and then like Keena just out of no where was like "what's your real name?!" and then Malyssa knew who he was?? which I guess was the point that he hid his name so they wouldn't realize he was Chaos but they also never brought up that Malyssa knew who he was?

--Sinjin on the one hand I think Sinjin's character was kinda fun. He is sassy and a bit quippy (really like his line when all the gods got together and were roaring at each other and he just says "one big happy family…" its just so silly of him I love it) They made it a point of how good he was at rallying troops behind him and like giving these passionate speeches which is kinda fun for him to be charismatic like that but it really feels like character moments that should have been for Arik?? The book didn't even bother bringing up his want to die (I dont remember if it even brought up he was immortal? I dont think they did) that annoyed me but REALLY annoyed me when he had the line while giving a speech to the soldiers and said "we have the will to live!" made me yell HE WOULD NOT FUCKING SAY THAT!! his personal motives are just kinda dropped after a while too? like he started out playing both sides (the other Avatars and Necrosan) but that doesnt really go anywhere and once he gets the powers of being an avatar it seems like he's going to betray the Avatars because he doesnt want to release Diablo again but it just never happens? they have a lead in like he's planning something but Tor and Arik show up and he just never tries any kind of backup plan or anything? he's just fully helping the Avatars to beat Necrosan and release the gods

--Arik, Tor, Xiao Ming Im lumping all 3 together because they are honestly interchangeable in the book you could just swap the names and it wouldnt make a difference because they arent given enough character to stand out. which is a real shame! especially for Arik and Xiao Ming because I think they have a lot of interesting character possibilities with what we get from the game:

Arik is a fallen prince who wants to rebuild his kingdom and in his game ending it says how he became a greatly loved king who was known for his compassion and wisdom. He establishes a new age of peace and prosperity for humanity and its a shame the book just doesn't touch on that at all I mean they mention he's a prince but not any of his wants to help humanity

Xiao Ming is an arrogant fighter who challenged the god Slashfang to a fight and lost. Shashfang doesnt kill him tho and instead makes him his avatar in his ending he rechallenges Slashfang who says instead of a fight Xiao Ming must hunt him down He fails at this as well but over his time traveling gains a sense of humility and peace

So I always pictured his relationship with Slashfang being more bitter? it says how Xiao Ming is "disfigured" by his earlier fight with Slashfang and I dont think he was really a willing follower?? Slashfang is more trying to teach him a lesson in the book tho he's just a guy, given no sense of arrogance or anything he's just there and hanging out with Slashfang like whatever. it did annoy me too cause there was a bit where Xiao Ming and Keena think Kaze betrayed them and Keena is the one going off about what a jerk he is and shit and Xiao Ming is the one like "no he wouldnt do that would he?" when I think it should have been switched with Xiao Ming shit talking Kaze for betraying them

I did laugh when the book out right said Tor and Armadon were boring lol (Malyssa is the one to say it and I was just like "girl you get it they are so boring") but honestly that made me more sad then anything cause I had hoped to get some character ideas for Tor especially but nope he's just kinda around and is a normal dude? Armadon mentions him being afraid but never of what? like what is that suppose to mean my guy??

--Malyssa ok so like… she is my fav character in the book but also the one that bothers me the most ffff I liked how much pull she had in the story playing both sides the whole time, betraying people and then talking her way back onto their side (even tho most of the time it made no fucking sense what she was trying to do or how she was able to make the others work with her again) I just liked how important she was

what I didnt like was how much of her character was "breasted boobily down the stairs" they for some reason made her centuries old but keeping herself youthful by drinking the blood of virgin men after sleeping with them?? like okay (I dont at all mind that she liked to get it like good for her! they just kinda made it weird cause she always thinking about it) her not wearing much clothes was brought up a LOT and just talking about her "supple body" I get it she's sexy idk it just really derailed me every time and made me roll my eyes. they didnt at all bring up any of her lore from the game which also really bothered me and I think was the main reason I hated her being portrayed as she was in the book

in the game she's literally a slave to Vertigo as are all her people (magically bound to serve Vertigo) and Malyssa wants to free them she ends up tricking Vertigo and rewritting a spell that Vertigo thought would free herself into one that would free Malyssa and her people and then she leads her people with kindness and allows them to pursue freedom and happiness

which is like so good??? thats part of why I like Malyssa so much cause she's bound to one of the big bads of the series yet she herself isnt evil and wants to do good (at least for her people) I just love that for her and it feels like such a shame the book reduced her to just "sexy evil lady" (not that thats not a fun character type but just not for Malyssa I think)

anyway I know the book was just a silly thing written to promote a fighting game about giant dinosaurs so I dont hold it to being like the most amazing piece of literature ever written. It would have had to have been a lot longer to touch on all the characters lore (and honestly thinking of it now if we had instead gotten a series of books each focusing on the individual characters with a slowly intertwining story would have been amazing!!) at the end of the day I had fun reading it! But did just want to whinge a bit about the characters (because I love them a lot hhh)
