okay just finished never say die and honestly….. not canon to me. trying to sort out my thoughts here so

The writing style feels different and also worse. like more childish? tbh might all be in my head bc I know it’s newer but still. I’ve been binge reading the series so it’s not like I took a huge break between it and Scorpia Rising and i just don’t remember

Definitely feel cheated out of the Scorpia Rising ending, I think that’s a popular opinion. It was this perfect culmination of the series and Alex’s story and then… WHAM all of that disappeared. I was honestly hoping that Jack wouldn’t be alive and the messege was a trick (even though I love Jack) bc it could’ve been this thing where Alex was forced to confront his grief and stuff. But no.

I started reading the series last year and I was very excited to see there were new books and that it was being continued bc I was really enjoying it so… very disappointing. Definitely would’ve been better and more impactful if he left it.

Going back to Jack’s death and the erasure of Alex’s trauma…. what WAS that. Like Alex killed Julius point blank and that was never brought up again. There was a line that was literally like “he would be okay again if Jack was alive” What. It seemed weirdly disrespectful of Alex’s character? If that makes sense?

Lwk their reunion was sooo anticlimactic. Where was the DRAMA the SOBBING the i have to touch her at all times to be sure she’s real. guys.

Retconning Ben Daniels to Wolf. Bad and should not have been done I hope that’s fixed.

Changing Ms. Jones’ character? Wtf? She was totally against Alex being brought in and did not want to manipulate him like Alan Blunt and then… what. They could’ve at least made it interesting? Like play into what Blunt was saying at the end of Scorpia Rising abt the job and sacrificing morals and such. She seems so cavalier about it.

Where is Smithers 😭😭. I feel like he was written off the show bc the actor didn’t want to be there but it’s literally a book series there are no actors. Did Horowitz just get tired of writing him???? I miss you king

🐏: She has a hard time ignoring people's flaws, big or small, which has caused conflict in the past. She can be blunt about pointing them out, but she doesn't mean to be cruel about it; in her mind, if the problem is spoken, it is easier to address.

🦁: He went though hell to survive, to make it back home alive and to see his family one last time... Things have very drastically changed since then, but he'd do anything to keep his loved ones happy and safe.

🐏: She'd love to have a wife and a house and be retired but honestly she's just waiting to see where life takes her.

W: Do you like more general prompts, or more specific ones?

I will very happily write most prompts whether they’re specific or not! More general ones are fun bc you can imagine different scenarios with different people or role reversal or whatever and it gives you more room to explore different possibilities. But specific ones are fun bc you can just take it and run!

X: A character you enjoy making suffer.

I’ve not written it, but I’ve got a scene in which 7 year old Alex just takes Alan Blunt out (like knocks him out not kills him) and thinking about that gives me a lot of satisfaction 😂

Y: A character you want to protect.

Alex! He suffers so much in canon that I find it an absolute joy to give him all the fluff in fics! (She says fully aware of the fact that she’s written quite a few whumpy fics where Alex is the whumpee…)

Z: Major character death–do you ever write/read it? Is there a character whose death you can’t tolerate?

This is something that I hadn’t really considered properly until recently. I’d read a few mcd fics and there are some great ones out there but it’s not something I’d particularly go searching for. I never expected it to be something that I’d write myself, until my brain just came up with an mcd idea that I then couldn’t get out of my head until I wrote it… so now I can also say that I’ve written it too!

I don’t think there’s a character who I couldn’t tolerate reading mcd for (although they are nearly always a punch in the gut! Some mcd fics are such great vindication for things that happen in canon though!)

A/N: Finally back with some content yaaay! It’s 8am and I have yet to go to bed...but I could go on and on about atsumu, he’s such an interesting character.

This was a request, but I accidentally deleted it, so I’m posting it separately. 🥺

Feedback is appreciated!

His communication skills suck at the beginning of the relationship. I mean, he does like communicating his feeling to other people, but most of the time he’s just talking out of his ass with little to no consideration for the other person’s feelings. It takes him seeking out Alan and/or Kita for relationship advice to realize that behaving like a pubescent fuck-boy won’t get him anywhere in a serious relationship. I say this with young adult Atsumu in my mind, shortly after graduating, at the beginning of his pro career etc.

Because it’s a bit different for adult Atsumu. Adultsumu is aware of everything I mentioned in the bullet point above, he’s still a fool, but more considerate of other’s feelings. Still can’t communicate with his partner properly, because he knows his words are sometimes too blunt, he knows that if he’s being too blunt and his words come out sounding mean he could seriously hurt your feelings.

Atsumu usually isn’t a very forgetful person, but when he’s super busy or has a lot on his mind that can change. He absolutely forgot about the date you two had planned, or the thing you asked him to get on his way home. He always feels extremely bad once he remembers or is being reminded, and tries his best to make it up to you.

You could probably ask for anything, he’d do everything to make up for being neglectful. He knows he can be an ignorant idiot from time to time, that why he tries extra hard to make up for a forgotten date or anniversary. He would never tell you, but he’s actually afraid of losing you over something like that, because he knows that volleyball takes up the biggest part of his life, but he still tries very much to be a good boyfriend and not neglect you.

He doesn’t expect you to, but he’d be super happy, if he found you awake and waiting for him, on days he would come home late. If you weren’t too tired you’d sit down in the kitchen together, talking about how your day went while he warms up leftover food in the microwave or makes some tea. On days you would feel too tired to stay up any longer, he’d take you to bed, join you under the covers and tell you about his day with a soft smile on his lips while holding you close and stroking your hair. (doesn’t that sound amazing)

It’s not a secret that Atsumu loves getting on other people’s nerves, especially the ones closest to him, and it’s no different with you. He constantly teases you and tries provoking you with that shit eating grin sitting on his lips. He draws the line at jokes involving your insecurities, though. At least he tries to, because from time to time he may accidentally overstep your boundaries, he just can’t keep his mouth shut. He may be a blunt shit at times, but he’s not cruel, especially not to you. Maybe a bit. Sometimes.

Contrary to his wannabe-smug-fuckboy side is a side of his you’ll get to experience the more comfortable Atsumu grows in your relationship, Softsumu It doesn’t happen every day, and it definitely doesn’t show when people (aside from his brother) are around, but when he goes into soft boy mode it’s like a switch has been flipped.

Softsumu just hits differently. It often shows when the two of you spend time together after not having seen each other in a while or when he feels down, or exhausted. Coming up to you for a hug every so often, kissing your temples, playing with your hair and you hands, he just can’t get enough of you. Return his affection when he’s in that kind of mood and you’ll make him the happiest man alive. He may not outright say it, because it’s a little embarrassing, but he loves receiving your affection. bc sometimes he’s like ew affection I don’t need that soppy shit but he does

He likes taking baths together. It’s pillow talk of some sort, but bathtub talk. Until you look like raisins.

You’ll have to show him how you want to be treated by him. Atsumu used to be an egoistic and a pretty damn cocky person, just a frigging brat in general, and while he changed a lot, for the better, after starting his volleyball career, he still has problems reading others feelings/behavior from time to time. It’s not that he doesn’t care about other people, he certainly does, but Atsumu mistakenly assumes that the people around him express their feelings the way he does, that they want and need what he wants and needs. Does that make sense? Also, he’s just really awkward around you in the beginning and has no clue how to treat you right.

Not really the jealous type. Okay, maybe a bit jealous from time to time. And he sometimes has phases where he feels particularly insecure, and vulnerable. When one of those phases hit him he gets a bit clingier, and jealous, when he thinks you’re giving somebody more attention than him. It really comes down to him being afraid of not being good enough for you, as in not being there enough for you or not being able to fulfill you wants and needs properly. Such a phase doesn’t last very long, though, and after you give him reassurance and some affection he’ll be back to his confident, idiotic self in no time.

Atsumu had a short temper when he was younger, I imagine that he gets more patient with time and experience, but the temper’s still there, you know? If you’re having an argument with him and it starts getting a little heated, he tries his best to stay calm. You will hear him sighing heavily and see him rubbing his temples a lot, he really does try, but in the end, he still gets frustrated rather quickly. Especially if you don’t get his point and he has to repeatedly explain something.

Really bad at apologizing, his pride is a little too strong. He quickly realizes when he made a mistake or is in the wrong, but he has a hard time coming forward and admitting his wrongdoing.

When he’s really mad he’ll either leave and not come back until he cooled down, or try to give you the cold shoulder. Both methods work semi-well, because he can’t stay mad at you for long, he’s pretty stubborn though, so the argument will come up again until you resolve it.

Catch him huffing and muttering mean remarks under his breath when he’s mad at you for something minor, or something that isn’t even worth mentioning, because he’s the only one that thinks you did something wrong, and also a petty little shit.

Loves you A LOT. All the way. And he likes showing you exactly how much he loves you, in private as well as in public.

That being said, Atsumu has absolutely no problem PDA. He likes having an arm around you, and will gladly hold your hand while you’re walking together.

He’s a very passionate, and wild lover. Sure, he doesn’t act inappropriately with you in public, but in private he’s a hands-on kind of guy. Literally. He has to have his hands on your body, not even in a sexual way. He just like knowing, feeling, that you’re there, beside him. That make sense?

Usually more of an outdoor dates kind of person, but if he’s feeling rather exhausted or socially spent, he would prefer a relaxing evening at home, preferably with you, watching movies or playing some games.

If you’re quite a bit shorter than him you bet he’ll use your shoulder or even your head as an armrest, and this action often comes with a teasing remark about your height.

Will put stuff, especially foods/snacks you love, on the top shelf. Because he thinks it’s funny watching you climb the kitchen counter like a monkey.

Absolutely loves giving you back hugs and resting his head on your shoulder or nuzzling his nose into your neck! Doesn’t happen that often, but it’s a sight to behold. He especially likes to do this when you’re going on about your day at home, or when it’s still early and you’re lying in bed together.

2 Who is your favourite fictional character and why?

This is an impossible question. I cannot choose ahhh!!! Instead of one, you get a list of a few of my favs: Mark Watney, Percy Jackson, Hermione Granger. Mark bc he’s so insanely clear sighted and self-directed even in the midst of absolute chaos, and he comes up with clever and creative solutions to complicated problems. He’s also fantastically irreverent and blunt and that makes his POV super fun to read. Percy bc he’s a resilient underdog with unswerving loyalty to his friends and family. He’s just likable. He’s got a Vibe that I’ve always wanted to be able to emulate. Hermione bc she’s smart but still brave and adventurous. She was the first female character I knew that could be *both.* She taught me that seemingly contradictory personality choices are not mutually exclusive.

I am PROCRAATINATING HAHA

I have cleaned the litter box, scrubbed the toilet, cleaned out my candle holders, lit candles, sewed up a hole in zaiyahs dog bed - at least while I was doing that I talked to Andrew about being frustrated and not sure what to say to my doctor tomorrow -

And now I am resisting the urge to turn on the tv lmao. But maybe I should put on music to ... get me zoned in and not listening to everything happening upstairs (my dad keeps calling my mom)

For non-instrumental songs ummm I quite like James Blunts’ Bonfire Heart, Alan Walker’s Faded (which is weird bc I’m usually not a fan of that type of music), Nightwish’s Islander and idk maybe I should shove in at least one longer-time fave so let’s go with Enkelille by Yö and Juha Tapio’s Kelpaat kelle vaan.

Favourite instrument: I really like string instruments, violin and cellos are very good.

Aesthetic: Sunrises over water, fresh green baby leafs, shiny dice, worn out books, sea foam on rocks, uncovered bedrock, gobble stone roads, sunlight filtering through the tree branches, rooftops in warm nights, kitchens with pulla scent, sitting on anything but chairs, bonfires by the sea shore, snoring kitties, delicate forest flowers, forest paths crawling with ants, bay windows, dialectal words, colorful shoes and wooden watches.

Favourite Author: Tolkien for me, please. Also Rick Riordan.

Benji Dunn: A FOX AND YES THIS IS THE HILL I WILL DIE ON. SMART AND RESOURCEFUL AND THINKS FAST and not quiet a canine but CLOSE. tho a red panda is fitting too (idea from @why-am-i-pluto)

Luther Stickell: big cuddly bear. warm for hugs but Can and Will kill you with one swipe if so desires.

William Brandt: the Most Tired Raccoon. so tired. let him rest.

Ilsa Faust: BLACK PANTHER. lithe and stealthy and GOOD FOR SNEAK.

Jane Carter: we haven’t talked about her, shame on us, but i do think she’d be another Big Cat. probably a tiger. can hide herself if the situation calls for it but her fighting style is much more Blunt than ilsa’s.

50 Awesome Women To Know: Part 3

Well, to the surprise of no one, I couldn’t actually stop after just 50, so let’s have another two-part installment!

Ada Blackjack (1898-1983): Inuit, went on an Arctic expedition in 1921 as a cook and seamstress, and ended up being the only survivor. Lived for two years alone on uninhabited Wrangel Island in the extreme far north of Siberia, until she was finally rescued.

Adela of Blois (1067-1137): French, daughter of William the Conqueror, and the apple did not fall far from the tree, as she was a formidable matriarch, political operator, and patroness of education in her own right. Informed her husband that he was going back on crusade after he had left early, Or Else. (He did.)

Aethelflaed of Mercia (870-918): English, another kickass daughter of a famous king, in her case Alfred the Great. She was known as “Lady of the Mercians,” ruled as a provincial lord in her own right, and was damn good at it.

Agafia Lykova (1944 -- ): Russian, only surviving member of the Lykov family, a group of Russian Old Believers who lived in total seclusion in the Siberian wilderness for 42 years. She still lives there now.

Alakhai Bekhi (c.1191-after 1230): Mongolian, daughter of Genghis Khan, and stopped him from killing the entire Ongud tribe of her in-laws after her husband was murdered. He gave her the title of “Princess Who Runs The State” and often trusted her with administrative responsibilities.

Alison Hargreaves (1962-1995): English, accomplished mountaineer who climbed Mount Everest solo and without oxygen, among many others. Died in the descent of K2 in 1995.

Anna Komnene (1083-1153): Byzantine Greek, daughter of Emperor Alexios Komnenos, scholar, physician, mathematician, and historian. She wrote the Alexiad, an important source on her father’s life, and is one of the very few medieval female historians that we know of.

Billie Holiday (1915-1959): African-American jazz singer and huge influence on popular music. You’ve probably heard of her, but you should also go read more about her insanely dark past, what she had to overcome to reach success, and her tragic life, including her blunt account of the prejudice she faced.

Chimimanda Ngozi Adichie (1977-- ): Nigerian, author and novelist. Recipient of a MacArthur Genius Grant among many other awards, outspoken feminist, and social critic.

Colette (1873-1954): French, author, playwright, and actress, openly bisexual, nominated for the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1948. Will be played by Keira Knightley in an upcoming film.

Elizabeth Cochrane Seaman (1864-1922): American, better known by her pen name, Nellie Bly. Intrepid and groundbreaking female journalist who traveled the world in 80 days and whose “Ten Days In a Mad-House” exposed the culture of rampant lunatic asylum abuse and started reform of the system.

Elizabeth Freeman (c.1744-1829): African-American, known as “Mum Bett.” Sued the state of Massachusetts for her freedom and won, in 1780, in a ruling that found slavery incompatible with the Massachusetts Constitution.

Frances E. Allen (1932 -- ): American, computer scientist and first female IBM Fellow, as well as the first female winner of the Turing Prize in computing.

Grace O’Malley (c. 1530-c.1603): Irish, pirate queen and matriarch of a western Irish dynasty, famed in Irish folklore. Met Queen Elizabeth I in 1593, where the queens spoke to each other in Latin, due to Grace not knowing English and Elizabeth not knowing Irish, and made quite an impression.

Hatshepsut (1507-1458 BC): Egyptian, ruled as pharaoh in her own right and not as queen consort. Powerful and respected ruler whose memory was erased by her successor, Thutmose III.

Henrietta Lacks (1920-1951): African-American, died of cervical cancer at age 31, and her cells (taken from her without her knowledge or consent) became the founder of the “immortal” HeLa stem cell line, still used in medical research.

Hypatia of Alexandria (c.350/70-415): Egyptian, famous philosopher, mathematician, astronomer, probably asexual, known for teaching and lecturing in the Alexandrian schools. Murdered by a mob of Christian monks in 415.

Isabella Bird (1831-1904): English, traveler, author, and first female fellow of the Royal Geographical Society. She traveled most of the world and wrote several books about her experiences, including A Lady’s Life in the Rocky Mountains.

Jackie Mitchell (1913-1987): American, one of the first female professional baseball players. At the age of 17, she famously struck out Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig in an exhibition game, which led to her contract getting voided the next day and women declared unfit to play baseball. So, clearly handled well.

Joan Clarke (1917-1996): English, mathematician and cryptanalyst who worked with Alan Turing to break Enigma at Bletchley Park during WWII and was (as shown in The Imitation Game) briefly engaged to him.

Jeanne de Clisson (1300-1359): French, known as the “Lioness of Brittany.” After her husband was killed by the French crown, she swore revenge, got three black ships with red sails, and terrorized the English channel as a privateer.

Juana Maria (c.1811-1853): Native American, better known as the “Lone Woman of San Nicolas Island,” a Nicoleño Indian and the last surviving member of her tribe, who lived there alone for 18 years until she was found. The novel Island of the Blue Dolphins is based on her story.

Junko Tabei (1939-2016): Japanese, mountaineer, and first woman to summit Everest (1975), which included her being buried by an avalanche, as well as each of the Seven Summits, the tallest mountains on each continent.

Lucy (3.2 million years ago): Ethiopian, the name given to a skeleton of a small pre-human hominid found in Africa in 1974. She became famous worldwide and led to many developments in the study of human biology and evolution.

Lyudmila Pavlichenko (1916-1974): Russian, known as the most successful female sniper and one of the most successful snipers period, with 309 confirmed kills of Nazis during WWII. Struck up an unlikely friendship with Eleanor Roosevelt.

last book you read?: I started rereading the Bloody Jack series last month bc god they were so influential on me growing up and I like rereading them every now and then even though I’m now realizing just how many yikes-worthy to downright terrible things are in there. I’m busy, so I’m barely into it, but I the last book I actually completed was Outlander, which is the first book I’ve completed in years. I don’t read much anymore, really

There’s this one girl, though, who’s an ex-coworker, and considering that these days she’s technically a relative!! the fuck!! i guess I’ll probably have to encounter her again someday. i wrote this long ass nonsensical jurassic park sequel post while i was in india please take it

jurassic park Thoughts cause i watched jurassic park iii and never made a post about it jurassic park.. should not be a franchise. im not going to elaborate on how the original is the best movie ever made bc that’s common knowledge already BUT imo, the movie’s most powerful qualities are good characters and exciting action. possibly the “man vs god etc etc” themes, as well, but it is kind of painfully blunt & i really need to give the original a rewatch. but i mention the last one bc i do think it’s an iconic quality. and while i’m SURE there is a creative genius out there that knows how to effectively expand on those themes in a sequel without rehashing the original, it seems pretty damn difficult. (i do like the idea of like, younger generations having to deal with the problems of their predecessors & trying not to make them again but that’s as far as i can get). in any case there has not been a single success cause themes in sequels have included “Environmentalism ft. Bad Guy That Wants To Hunt A T.Rex For Sport,” “Family Values ft. The Paleontology Field Is In Shambles,” “Oops! I Did It Again ft. Bad Guy That Wants To Use Raptors In The Army,” and now “Enviromentalism Again Because That Worked So Well The First Time.” that isn’t to say a sequel needs to be deep to be good, but they really fail spectacularly when they try and it doesn’t help their quality.

hell, the thematic elements feel more like a rushed rite of passage and it’s totally valid that the sequels try to focus on characters & action. i feel like i have to rewatch jp2 and jworld to confirm this but they do all occasionally have decent bits of action (jworld especially, and i would say that it makes it the best sequel but, idk, gotta rewatch) even jurassic park iii for all its flaws has some occasionally good action..? i looked it up and jp3 has the same director as the first captain america movie, which 1. improvement goals am i right 2. explains why the ending for the latter was notoriously kind of dumb 3. brings me to my NEXT POINT

THE CHARACTERS ALL FREAKING SUUUUUCK like i’m still going to love the original characters despite the sequels just because im horribly biased (closest comparison i think of is characters in the star wars prequels; i love the idea of tragic darth vader, i love the idea of ian malcolm having a daughter, but the execution itself is godawful). but new characters are all just kind of dislikable (“Enviromentalist But Also A Dick,” “Teen Boyz and Mary Sue Chris Pratt”). jp3 tried admirably (i dont why im such an apologist for this movie. it isn’t good. i don’t know anything about film criticism) with the Midwestern Couple That Wants To Save Their Son And Does Lots Of Dumb Shit Because Of This, and, i’m sure plenty of parents would do stupid desperate things like falsely bribe alan grant in order to save their son, and scream bloody murder in an attempt to find their son on a dinosaur-infested island but they are just NOT easily likable/relatable in the narrative, and the viewer shouldn’t have to do the heavy lifting in order to like a character! i feel kind of the same way about alan grant’s student, who is likable despite not having a personality i guess by merit of not making bad decisions, UNTIL he steals the raptor eggs so that he can sell them to fund their dig because The Paleontology Field Is In Shambles. and sure, it makes sense on paper but it doesn’t work on the screen! and there’s the fact that he fake-dies as a kind of sacrifice for that bad decision (i’m assuming), but he’s not the only one that made a bad decision. and when they do find the child he is like, disproportionately competent at survival cause he read alan grant’s books i guess. the other characters are just never relevant and die. i couldn’t tell you what made the original characters so endearing/what made the deaths work but the new movies have really not done well with that aspect, and i think that might be their biggest flaw

in conclusion, a jurassic park sequel could be a very marked improvement (if not good) if all that got better was the writing, everything in the world is subjective and i’m not sure what’s good or bad anymore, and i think i might switch to the jurassicparkiii url
