merlin's "the years before i came here were the loneliest of my life" line is so very important in the grand scheme of things. just the previous episode he gives his big 'i haven't had a break since i came here' speech, stark contrast of what we have here in 02x03. and you know very well it's the loneliness he fears and avoids, more than the idea of being overworked, overlooked, or even failing, being discovered. it's the loneliness that drives him, that's important. and i think fits nicely within the 'merlin was afraid to be unlovable' idea when it comes to revealing his magic, because, really, that's what it's about. not the giving, but the having, the being.

Kelly Bishop is so freaking good, I can't. When Lorelai tries to mend the argument about not telling her about the engagement immediately, she plays it so tough. My pride will not be broken. I was and am in the right. And then slooowly, so subtly starts feeling affected and breaking her composure until she looks away during Lorelai's speech at the perfect moment and her face tells the hurt of so many lost years and yet she's still the distinguished and strongwilled Emily we love to hate, hate to love, just love, or just hate, idk I'm not you. Amazing. Seriously steals every scene she's in, I'm always glued to her.
The writing is perfect to have her break the moment with, "your head is too big for a veil." She can't help herself; despite loving her daughter, pride runs the show. At least she passed back the apology ball Lorelai was trying to throw her after that remark. There's hope but there's not there's hope but there's not there's hope but there's not- constantly in this relationship. It's so sad, so true to life, so engaging to watch. WHY IS THIS SHOW SO GOOD
Also, Lorelai is so much more mature and self-aware than people give her credit for. You know how hard is it to own up for your part in an argument that the other party also hurt you in? To truly know why you have the reactions to others that you do and be able to convey that respectfully? A+ Lorelai moment.
