His heart stutters in his chest as he looks up at his best friend. He’s known Harry since he was barely out of diapers, and Harry gets him in a way that few people ever have – or have tried to. He knows him, to the point where sometimes Louis worries that he’s able to read his mind.

Or: It's Seven minutes in Heaven, but Louis sort of feels like he's ended up in Hell instead when he's forced into a small bedroom with his childhood best friend slash long time crush.

It’s not like his descent into addiction has been anything less than extremely public. It’s not like people won’t have expected it. His fans certainly have, he knows that much. He knows that they might even be happy that he’s here. Liam wishes that he could say he did it because of them. Because of the people that have followed his career, made his career. In a way, maybe he is. Because he wouldn’t be here if it weren’t for them, if he’d simply been Liam Payne of Wolverhampton, as opposed to Liam Payne, 1/5th of One Direction.

But he’s not here for them.

He’s just finished making a drink for another customer when a literal angel walks towards him. It’s not an exaggeration to say that the crowd almost seems to part for him, and for a moment Louis wonders if there’s a literal halo around him or if it’s just the lights in the bar, and then he notices the way the man trips over nothing, and the illusion wanes somewhat.

He’s still fucking gorgeous though, even on bambi legs, and Louis resists the urge to paste on his tried-and-ever-undefeated flirty smile. Instead he just grins, appraising this newest customer and trying to remain professional. He might be demiromantic, or whatever the fuck Zayn had called it, but that doesn’t mean he can’t appreciate this man’s good looks. After all, his romantic identity had nothing to do with his sexual identity, much as people assumed it did. For a brief moment Louis laments his decision to stop sleeping with people, especially when the boy pops a dimple when he smiles back at him.

Or: Louis is a bartender who doesn't take drink orders, but just makes drinks based on what he thinks his customers will like. Harry is just another customer. Or is he?

Louis is 42 and newly divorced with her four daughters off to college when she realizes all the plans she used to have for her life no longer fit. Just as she's starting to figure things out, she meets Harry Styles who proves sometimes starting over turns out so much better than sticking with the original plan.

Frowning a bit in a concerned and yet also disappointed way, Greg then continued.

“Yeah, yeah,” Louis said, getting up from the table and heading into the kitchen. “He’s staying with you until he finds a place, isn’t he?”

When Greg comes up with the brilliant plan to introduce Harry to their best friends Grimmy and Louis, Gemma isn't entirely pleased. Then again, she never could have imagined the outcome either.

Louis glanced at the glass of red wine in his hand before taking a quick look around those nearest him on the train. Just across the aisle in a seat facing him was a man with graying, curly hair falling into his face yet somehow staying above his glasses. He was reading a book as he tapped his foot, seemingly oblivious to everything around him, and there sitting on the table in front of him was a half glass of white wine.

“You are always welcome to sleep on my couch if you need,” Harry offered immediately. “I still don’t think it’s quite as bad as you seem to believe it is, but I’d much rather you be next door than fifteen or twenty minutes away at someone else’s house.”

Louis was flooded with relief. “God, if you really don’t mind, I would really appreciate that.”

2022 roundup

Watched less tv this year than probably any other year in my life because I was mostly pregnant and queasy beyond belief, but here’s a roundup of the stuff I did manage to cram. Not only kdramas, though mostly that. (I’m probably forgetting some but these are all that come to mind rn.)

The Red Sleeve: Didn’t actually finish this because of the pain, but it was so well-made. Ambitious cinematography, great storytelling and acting. Lee Se-young really gave us the range; having only seen her poised and regal in The Crowned Clown before, I loved watching her goof off in between the angsty bits. A serve.

Hyena: I normally dislike law dramas, but the leads are so mesmerizing (and so attractive) that you root for them even when they do objectively evil work. Have never seen such palpable yearning between two characters. Jung Geum-ja is the Most.

Into the Ring: Goo Se-ra my beloved! I want more romances like this: haggard social worker and the social justice gremlin whose daily complaints he has to resolve. Enjoyed every second.

Rewatch of Kingdom and Ashin of the North: Just as brilliant as the first time around. Come on Netflix, now that HBO Max is collapsing in on itself, get with that blood and gore and get to work on season 3 already. I want to see Ashin go apeshit!!

Jodhaa Akbar: Seven months later and I still get tingly thinking about this romance. Akbar dueling Jodhaa to win her back, and showering her with jasmine petals mid-fight. Hrithik Roshan and Aishwarya Rai both looking so hot it should be illegal. A soundtrack to make the sun rise even in the bleak midwinter. This was my first visit to Mughal India but not my last! (Thank you @rain-hat for the recs, you are a gift to tumblrkind!)

My Liberation Notes: Okay I was so into the first half that I cannot even tell you. It burrowed into the darkest, weariest part of me and lit a match. But I did not care for Mr. Gu’s backstory and the ensuing foray into the criminal underworld, and somewhere around there it lost its heart.

Love Between Fairy and Devil: Jam packed with tropes. A surprisingly touching and very entertaining fantasy for the Hades/Persephone girlies. Great visuals, too!

Alchemy of Souls: Speaking of great visuals! I will admit that I hop skipped my way through much of part 1. The world-building is claustrophobically boring, which is a shame because it is so charmingly costumed. I adore the premise of a villain body-swapping into a nobody. There is some good acting in this and there is also some very bad acting. I am upset with part 2 for filing the fangs off my darling Naksu, but I do admit that the dark fairytale vibe has got me hooked. (Evil mothers sewing golden thread into the bare skin of their daughters! Our hero tormented by the furies of hell! A marriage of convenience to the resident goth! I am eating it up by the spoonful.)

Stranger Things: I feel like I am in the minority here so this is probably on me, but I thought this was the least scary and also least emotionally engaging season. I think the problem horror-wise was Vecna and that they showed him too soon and too often in his campy monster makeup. All the Russia stuff was boring af, and I didn’t like that the kids were separated all season. Eddie was however a most delightful addition to the gang. Rest in power, babygirl.

First Love/Hatsukoi: I hate amnesia plots, and I don’t understand why the characters deal with it the way they do here, or why it is never resolved or even treated as something in need of resolving. However, the leads are delightful together and their chemistry is out of this world. Would happily have watched many, many more episodes of this. (I ragged on the color-coded families to my husband, before we realized we both wore the exact same shade of burgundy. So now I’ve decided that it’s cute and not weird at all.)

Things I didn’t finish, but might pick back up some day:

Business Proposal: Chaebol heirs are such a turn off that I couldn’t even finish it for my girls.

Bloody Heart: I only saw a few episodes of this because it was so difficult to find a good stream anywhere online. Goddamn Mouse gatekeeping Jang Hyuk from me!!

Under The Queen’s Umbrella: Too many princes.

on my shelf: soundtrack to MA year 3 - winter

welcome back to my bi-annual music roundup! my goal is to be done with uni This Year so i'll have to start thinking of what else to do with this concept (like that's the biggest life-problem i have to solve this year lol). anyway. even though i only took 3 classes this semester, one of them took up ALL of my time: typography. much like it's hard for me to watch movies normally now, i'm now looking at all kinds of written text in a completely new way which is equally fascinating and annoying. but you could say that for most of what i've learned at uni. what wasn't annoying, was the music i listened to (ey? ey?), so let's get into it:

RM: Indigo (2022)

RM's music over the years has spanned many different themes and genres, from hardcore (?) rap on his first mixtape to more vibey stuff on mono to all the many different things he's done on BTS' songs. Indigo continues this principle of diversity but by making the entire album so varied yet so cohesive. He touches on subjects like what it means to make art and to be a person, love and loneliness, navigating friendship. He's also developed quite the vocal skills, showing off his warm deep tone on several songs. While the comfort that mono was in its sadness, it's greys, the sound of rain and the melancholy of it, Indigo's comfort comes from a warmer place. It feels more grounded (despite the hectic genre switch-ups, like: "Closer" into "Change Pt. 2"?! Insane! But it works!) and the ever-present hopefulness feels more graspable. In general, the melodies on this album are also just so good that I can't get enough of them and I'm excited for my vinyl to arrive in June!!

fav: No. 2 (but seriously, all the songs are SO good)

Epik High: Strawberry (2023)

First of all: I recently saw Epik High live for the first time and it was like 100/10 amazing. Besides the songs being amazing, they're all just really funny?! It was half standup half hip-hop show and I was LIVING. Anyway, so Strawberry starts off with an instrumental track that would fit perfectly on Spotify's Dalkom Café playlist (which I love) and then goes into two insanely catches songs featuring Jackson Wang and Hwasa, respectively. Perfect choices. Iconically, the first lyrics you hear are "I'm on my way / I'm on my villain arc / I'mma need you to shut up for a minute" but on a really chill lo-fi beat. Beautiful. That's also how their live show started which is truly iconic. What fascinates me the most about Epik High's music is the melodic sensibility they bring to every song, even the ones that sound like freestyle rap. There's always a melodic heart to it, combined with really good lyrics.

Paramore: This Is Why (2023)

They're finally back!!! If you can't tell by my profile picture, Paramore's After Laughter (2017) is one of my absolute favourite albums of all time. And of course I love all their older albums too. I think This Is Why is a perfect follow-up to all of these: it ties in all the different sounds we've heard before but in a new way. It feels like they're still inspired by the same things, but they've gone deeper into them, if that makes sense. The sounds and themes of the album also just feel like a perfectly natural progression after Hayley's two solo albums, which the other band members also helped out on. You can hear and feel how much all of them have matured and grown musically, skills-wise, and personally. It's such a pleasure just letting all the sounds wash over you or singing along aggressively. There's a lot of aggression on the album, even in the love songs. But it's a good aggression? Maybe that's not the right word, but there's a power and a force, as opposed to a defeatedness throughout all the songs. Especially considering everything we've all been living through since the last album, I think this is a perfect response.

fav: Running Out of Time

NewJeans: "Ditto", "OMG" (2022/2023)

It's all hits, no misses so far with these girls. "Ditto" was released a bit earlier in the winter and perfectly encapsulated the wistful melancholy of the grey and wet days while still being insanely catchy. The melody has this very specific kind of melancholy, nostalgic undertone that the music video emphasises, but paired with a drill drumbeat that gives the whole thing an edge. "OMG" might sound more upbeat in direct comparison at first, but it also has some more somber undertones, especially when you take the music video (which left me confused and intrigued after my first watch) into consideration. I like that NewJeans songs can absolutely appeal to teenagers (their peers) easily but even older listeners can genuinely enjoy them without feeling like they're listening to a Disney Channel soundtrack and it's not really for them. There's a clear groundedness in these songs that is lacking in a lot of music for and by teens these days (especially looking at you, TikTok...). All of their songs are literally the most tenacious earworms, yet I'm not annoyed to have them camp out in my mind.

Le Sserafim: Antifragile (2022)

At first, I didn't like Antifragile as much as Fearless because the track sequencing is just not as good: the mood changes from track to track don't feel as smooth. But all of the songs on their own are absolutely on par with their first EP's and add new textures that I enjoy. Particularly "No Celestial": it's heavily rock-influenced with a great melody and message, and the girls' vocals work very well with this style of music. Considering that their whole thing is being fearlessly themselves in the face of adversity and embracing supposed flaws, rock is the perfect genre to express this with. Even on Fearless, a song like "The Great Mermaid" had somewhat of a rock sensibility but not traditionally executed. For "No Celestial" they brought in the guitars and melody of a 2000s/2010s pop-rock song that just makes so much sense for them. The title track "Antifragile" is also really fun to listen to, going in directions I didn't expect (especially in the chorus). In general, they manage to make empowering songs that don't feel cheap and fake, which is difficult to pull off.

fav: No Celestial

Tomorrow x Together: The Name Chapter: Temptation (2023)

How does TXT manage to do something different on every album and have it still sound so quintessentially TXT? Every new album my first reaction is "Oh? This is different... hmm......." and then I get obsessed and loop the album for weeks. Temptation has been exactly the same. Title track "Sugar Rush Ride" is the most seductive they've ever been, with the way they use their vocals especially, which suits the theme of the album. It deals with the temptation to ignore all your responsibilities and just stay "Happy Fools" (eyy) but in the end, they realise that you can't live like that forever, and have to say "Farewell, Neverland". Something about the guitar and melody on that song specifically feels so familiar to me, but I can't pinpoint it... The biggest surprise to me was hearing an instrumental for "Devil By The Window" and finding out it's just a sparse beat for most of the song, with their vocals being the only thing to make the song sound full. They keep doing new and interesting things and I just need them to finally come to Europe on tour now...

fav: Farewell, Neverland (but seriously, all of them though)

Jin: "The Astronaut" (2022)

As a massive fan of both Coldplay and Jin's music, this song is everything to me. It's the perfect collaboration, especially considering they're fans of each other too and have both explored a more space-y theme in their recent music. Of course, this song is Jin's last release before he had to go do his compulsory military service, so it being full of so much love and melancholy makes it bitter-sweet in all the right ways. Did I go see Coldplay's Argentina concert in cinema just to see Jin perform this song? Yes, and I cried a little.

Red Velvet: The ReVe Festival 2022 - Birthday (2022)

Continuing the theme from their previous album of interpolating classical pieces into poppy tracks, "Birthday" uses a George Gershwin piece but makes it go all kinds of places in a very (recent) Red Velvet style. These days, some of their songs are a little much at first listen, but their vocals always, always, always tie everything together so well that I can't help but enjoy listening. The other songs on the album are a little less quirky and more classic Red Velvet with great vocals and interesting melodies. But I do keep wondering one thing: what does "oops we are on a ride" mean? How are you accidentally on a rollercoaster?? Or is it a metaphor for how life is a rollercoaster............. Anyway, of course I had red velvet cake on my birthday this year while listening to this album and it felt great.

Fujii Kaze: Help Ever Hurt Never (2020)

I found this album through such a weird way: Suga of BTS posted black-and-white photos of himself on his Instagram with his long hair in his face and people on Twitter said it reminded them of the album cover of a song that recently blew up on TikTok - Fujii Kaze's "Shinunoga E-Wa", so people started making Suga edits with that song. I liked the song and checked out the album and loved it and it's been on repeat ever since. Something about it reminds me so much of Jamie Cullum but if his songs were a little more interesting or at least his albums were a bit more diverse... Kaze's voice has a very soothing and rich tone and that coupled with the great melodies and instrumentation of his songs just makes me want to endlessly loop the album.

fav: Sayonara Baby

Seulgi: 28 Reasons (2022)

I honestly did not know what to expect from Seulgi's debut album but although it goes in several directions, it stays cohesive and suits her perfectly. It's dark in a different way than her album with fellow Red Velvet member Irene, Monster (2020), with a certain alluring quality. Most of the songs are very brash with Seulgi showcasing her vocal prowess, which makes the two songs right in the middle of the EP, "Bad Boy, Sad Girl" and "Anywhere But Home", stand out more, as they seem more understated, showing a different, less aggressive vocal style. Especially the latter is very reminiscent of a certain style of dance songs from the 2000s like Sophie Ellis-Bextor's "Murder On The Dancefloor" and Estelle's "American Boy" which I very much enjoy.

Adora: Adorable REbirth (2022)

I have been waiting for Adora's debut album since I first heard her voice in 2019 on Suga's "Seesaw" and then found out she's had a hand in making so many of my favourite BTS and TXT songs. Her first singles in 2021 and 2022 showcased her specific brand of quirkiness paired with stunning vocals, perfectly paving the way for this first EP. The single is literally called "Magical Symphony", which really encapsulates her vibe. Although she only produced about half the songs on the EP, they all sound so quintessentially her and showcase her vocal skills exactly like I'd always hoped. I'm excited to hear whatever she's cooking up next.

I've always been sprinkling thees and thous into my Finrod/Sauron AU for effect, but I finally actually committed 100% to informal thou for a fic, AND wrote a fic that's mostly comedy? Extremely happy with those 2 new developments, contained in the same fic (Thine Ever, Makalaurë).

Fic I Spent The Most Time On:

I think Every Time, You're Another Evil, the one for Secret Santa. It didn't flow as readily and the setup (reborn Maedhros and reembodied Mairon in Valinor are each other's bad coping mechanism) felt delicate to try to navigate.

The soft wings of carrion birds by Wander_On_The_Steppe (Ogniem i mieczem) - Bohun-centric with a fantastic original character, angst, hurt/comfort, steppe-mythology atmosphere, and just immensely rich, textured, beautiful prose. I am incredibly honored my old Bohun fic had any part in inspiring this masterpiece!! If you like Ogniem i mieczem/With Fire And Sword, do yourself a favor and read this gorgeous fic today!!! It has everything that initially captivated me (and still does) about that book and those characters!! Just by itself, this unlooked-for blessing would have made 2022.

cerements by @samarqqand (Silmarillion) - THE Maedhros and Maglor Himring-era fic, elaborating so many of the dynamics I enjoy for them with a delicate but incredibly insightful and incisive touch. It is incredibly beautifully written, the last moment between them is forever engraved in my fluttering heart, and I am so delighted I get to own it in hard copy in @nailsinmywall's Maglor zine!! I also need to mention (as I already have to basically everyone I talk to...) samarqand's Maedhros/Maglor as-the-world's-shrinking-and-expanding-at-the-end-of-the-First-Age fics litany, familiar, and a side story, rereading any one of which makes me have to lie down for 10 hours straight. They are so, so good.

An Endless Tide on Endless Shores by @imakemywings (Silmarillion) - This Daeron/Maglor post-*First Age fic makes my heart ache. Many a Concept and moment of grievously painful and pathetic Maglor angst stick with me and resurface to bring me more pain. Both of their issues and the potential for them to take some shelter together despite everything get explored here... and it was a gift fic for me! ❤️ (ALSO: United We Stand - sad kingship Maglor!! Also-also: It's About The Journey - hilarious modern au Fëanorian family car ride! I can't leave it out because it still makes me chuckle)

The One With All The Birds by clothonono (Silmarillion) - Elwing, Nerdanel, and the sons of Fëanor. Incredible characterization and exactly the kind of painful but hopeful and impossibly kind vibe that always guts me.

Service by WhenasInSilks (Nirvana In Fire) - short but delicious and beautifully executed Intrigue, lust, and (offscreen) Prince Yu/Mei Changsu dubcon. Jingyan has feelings about it.

Deeds of Surpassing Valor by Foegerfeax (Silmarillion) - Maedhros during the Dagor Bragollach that really makes one feel as though one's ribcage got cracked open. Excellent white-knuckled Maedhros.

a fish hook, an open eye by simaetha (Silmarillion) - the fem!Maglor/Elwing you didn't know you needed. BUT YOU DID. I love both of them here.

A king is he that can hold his own by id_dump (Silmarillion) - Multichapter Thingol/Maedhros fic, ft. mentorship, smut, and the long Shadow of trauma & wrongdoing. This is a stealth ship for me and I'm so glad there's this feast of content for it!

Courtesan Maglor prompt fill on DW by @jouissants (Silmarillion) - I remain filled with unbelievable delight that this exists. Really well-written Poised and Beautiful Maglor in a veery fancy Valinor courtesan role, being paid a visit by Mairon and drawn into intrigue, ft. sexy music. Every so often I remember the opening lines of this and it makes my day.

In terms of fic, I'd like to finish my Finrod/Sauron AU (at least up to the point that I really want to get their arc) and polish up some things for Maedhros and Maglor Week 💕 These are my dreams, anyway.

Suomen Kuvalehti has news of new developments in Wille Rydman's (Finns) legal saga. The Minister for Economic Affairs was accused of inappropriate behaviour by several women interviewed last year by Helsingin Sanomat.

One of them then spoke to police alleging Rydman may have been guilty of sex crimes, but after a police investigation no charges were brought.

Rydman then published a book which included the identity of an accuser, which in turn prompted a police investigation over whether he had breached confidentiality.

That investigation resulted in no charges being brought, in part because police said in their report that the woman had already discussed her experiences publicly.

The prosecutor has now told Suomen Kuvalehti that she is re-evaluating that decision, as the woman had not in fact ever discussed the sex crimes publicly even though she had discussed other aspects of Rydman's behaviour around women.

Reporting about Rydman's behaviour around women led to his departure from the National Coalition Party in 2022, and he subsequently joined the Finns Party.

He replaced Villhelm Junnila as the Minister for Economic Affairs ten days after the latter's appointment when Junnila's Nazi references and links emerged, and coalition partner the Swedish People's Party voted against him in a confidence vote.

Since then Helsingin Sanomat has published private messages Rydman sent to his then-girlfriend that included racist language.

End of mink farming?

The avian flu outbreak in Finland has seen bird deaths around the country, and some debate about how to deal with it. The H5N1 strain has spread to the country's mink farms, which have been a cause of international concern.

That's because the fur farming industry packs mink tightly into cages, giving them little room to move and creating the ideal conditions for influenza to spread from animal to animal.

If it does that, it could more easily mutate into a form that can transmit to and between humans, creating the conditions for a new, deadly global pandemic.

Helsingin Sanomat reports the views of one German virologist who has been following the situation.

Isabella Eckerle said on Twitter (which recently changed its name to the letter X) that Finland should act to reduce the risk.

"This is playing with fire and really provoking adaptation of the virus to mammals," posted Eckerle. "We are not ready for another pandemic, and the situation does not seem to be under control at all."

Industry representatives told HS that they were working to control the outbreak and protect fur farms, but declined to state whether they thought the outbreak was currently under control.

Storm roundup

Finland is getting a change in the weather on Tuesday, but debate still rages in Iltalehti about whether it is or will become a storm. The original warnings were rather stark, but they were downgraded and then partially reinstated as forecasts developed.

As things stood on Tuesday morning, the worst of the weather was due to hit central Finland, with some lightning and thunder likely.

For the capital, it looked like the storm would manifest mainly as an afternoon of rain.

Quadrantid meteor shower 2023: How to see the first meteor shower of the new year

The Quadrantids are one of the strongest meteor showers of the year, with an hourly rate comparable to the Geminids in December (when we were offered excellent viewing) and the Perseids in August. The Quadrantid meteor shower often produces bright fireballs, however, viewing conditions for 2023 are less than ideal.

When can you see the Quadrantid meteor shower 2023 in the UK?

The Quadrantid meteor shower began on 28 December 2022 and will continue through to 12 January 2023. The shower reaches its peak tonight, 3-4 January, when we can expect to see a maximum of around 110 meteors per hour!

The Quadrantids are one of the strongest and most consistent meteor showers, with heightened activity for a few hours on either side of the peak. Numbers will drop off steeply over the following week, before the annual shower wraps up on 12 January. Unlike other meteor showers with peaks that can last for a couple of days, the Quadrantids have a sharp peak that only lasts for a few hours.

The shower peaks at 3am on 4 January, so the best time to look up and maximise your chances of spotting a Quadrantid is between around midnight tonight and 6am, before the sky lightens and the Sun rises at 8:05am (as seen from London).

However, conditions are looking rather grey and cloudy, and weather warnings for rain are in place for much of the UK until 6am on 4 January. So it may be a case of peering through the breaks in cloud cover – if we’re lucky.

Where to look

If we do get lucky with the weather, the Quadrantid’s radiant is actually in an extinct constellation, Quadrans Muralis (Latin for mural quadrant), which is where the shower gets its name. It’s one of the forgotten constellations, and is now part of the Boötes constellation, near the Plough asterism in Ursa Major. The location from where the meteors appear to originate is called the radiant.

To find the radiant, extend the line of the handle in the Plough (called the Big Dipper in the US), following the arc of the handle until you come to Arcturus, a red giant in the constellation Boötes (although from our POV it shines more orange than red). The radiant is located between the end of the ‘tail’ in Ursa Major and the ‘head’ in Draco.

In the northern hemisphere (the southern hemisphere will very rarely see any activity), the radiant will remain low in the sky, around 20.4 degrees at midnight, but rising to 40.5 degrees by the peak at 3am. But you don’t need to look directly at the radiant to see the meteors as they will be visible across the whole sky; just try to get as wide a view of the whole sky as possible.

How many meteors will we be able to see?

During the Quadrantid meteor shower, you can expect to see a peak of around 110-120 meteors per hour. The peak (known as the peak zenithal hourly rate, ZHR) is short and sharp, so it can be easily missed if clouds or a bright Moon spoil the occasion.

Activity varies year on year, and in reality, for 2023 it looks as though we’ll be seeing considerably less. Even if we’re offered a break in the clouds, there’s still a nearly-full waxing gibbous Moon to contend with, so conditions could be better.
