Sean Ingle at The Guardian:
The US swimmer Lia Thomas, who rose to global prominence by becoming the first transgender athlete to win a NCAA college title, is taking legal action in a bid to compete again in elite female sport – including the Olympics. Thomas has not swum since World Aquatics introduced new rules in 2022, which prohibit anyone who has undergone “any part of male puberty” from the female category. Before then, transgender women were able to compete if they lowered their testosterone levels. In a scientific policy document that informed its decision, World Aquatics said that swimmers such as Thomas retained significant physical advantages – in endurance, power, speed, strength and lung size – from undergoing male puberty, even after reducing their testosterone levels through medication. Thomas, who was a moderate swimmer in the male category before transitioning, has now recruited the Canadian law firm Tyr to take a case to the court of arbitration for sport in Switzerland. However, because the 25-year-old is not currently registered with US swimming, it is understood that the case is highly unlikely to be heard before the Paris Olympics.
The move, revealed by the Daily Telegraph, is the latest twist in the fractious debate between those who argue that fairness and safety in women’s sport is paramount and others who maintain that the inclusion of transgender athletes should be prioritised. Thomas has always denied transitioning to get ahead. “The biggest misconception, I think, is the reason I transitioned,” Thomas said in 2022. “People will say: ‘Oh, she just transitioned so she would have an advantage, so she could win.’ I transitioned to be happy, to be true to myself.”
Trans woman swimmer Lia Thomas is taking action to sue World Aquatics that bars trans women from competing in female events if they have begun any part of male puberty. Hopefully she wins her case.

The storied torch's 5,000-kilometre journey to this summer's games is about to begin.
The flame for this summer's Paris Olympics is being lit at the birthplace of the ancient Olympic Games in southern Greece in a meticulously choreographed ceremony.

Looks like I was wrong about the fate of the SUI team.
Swiss, yes, but due to Olympic sailing preparations for most of their crew, they are bolstered by some Down Under and Kiwi talent.
Great to see Guy Endean and Glenn Ashby making their formal returns to foiling. (Glenn will be mainly off the boat in a coaching role, but it seems that as a reserve sailor, if required, he will suit up). Will Ryan, I don’t know your career - but if you can light a spark and bring this team together - this might be the best signing yet.
Congrats to Jason Saunders for retaining his flight control role - truly the most demanding position on the boat and to Sebastian Scheiter - we look forward to your continuous improvement as helm/driver

Russia and Belarus will not receive formal invitations to the 2024 Paris Olympics amid the war in Ukraine, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) said Thursday.
The remaining 203 countries set to participate in the Summer Games will receive their invitations later this month, one year out from the start of the Games.
While the Russian and Belarusian teams will not receive invitations, their athletes could still compete next year.
The IOC Ethics Commission issued recommendations for international sports competitions in late March, suggesting those with Russian or Belarusian passports be allowed to compete as neutral athletes.
It also recommended that those who actively support the war in Ukraine or who are contracted to the Russian or Belarusian militaries or national security agencies be barred from entering international competitions.
However, the IOC emphasized on Thursday these recommendations “do not concern” the participation of athletes with a Russian or Belarusian passport in the 2024 Paris Olympics or the 2026 Milano Cortina Olympics.
“The IOC will take this decision at the appropriate time, at its full discretion, and without being bound by the results of previous Olympic qualification competitions,” the committee said.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky previously blasted the IOC’s recommendation that Russians be allowed to compete as neutral athletes, accusing the organization of attempting to “bring representatives of the terrorist state into world sports.”
“There is no such thing as neutrality when a war like this is going on,” Zelensky said in a speech in January. “And we know how often tyrannies try to use sports for their ideological interests. It is obvious that any neutral flag of Russian athletes is stained with blood.”
However, IOC President Thomas Bach pushed back on Zelensky’s accusations, arguing the games should remain open to all athletes.
“It is not up to governments to decide who can take part in which sports competitions, because this would be the end of international sports competitions and world championships and the Olympic Games as we know it,” Bach said in February.
