Doodle dump time!

1) A portrait of the artist, lying on the floor with an existential expression as their face and hands begin to melt into a puddle. I was trying to capture the feeling of realising your D&D is not today but in a week from now, or alternatively missing a game that’s long finished/been on hiatus.

2) Cato, a chubby drow with an irritated expression on his face, having been woken from rest on a false alarm. His narrow eyes are narrowed yet further than usual, and his arms are folded over his chest. His hair is full of curl rollers and he’s wearing a sheer robe with a fluffy, feathery trim, the very picture of sophisticated decadence interrupted.

3) A work-in-progress from a larger piece, depicting Solace, a very short, gaunt drow, with downward-pointing ears, leant on his gnarled walking cane and staring ahead with a look of resolute nihilism from beneath his choppy hair. His foot on the side away from the cane is turned far outwards from its knee, in a way that it looks like it ought not to be able or comfortable to. He wears a peaked cap and a sharp cape coat with brocade fastenings, and warily clutches a battered journal in his free hand.

4) A very simple little cartoon of the artist knelt down with a ring box, on the verge of tears, proposing to mononykus: a small, feathery dinosaur that looks somewhat like an owl crossed with an anteater (modelled after its appearance in Prehistoric Planet, in which I fell in love with it). Beneath it is small text in brackets that reads “I am going to put it on her one big claw”, referring to the ring. Mononykus, with long, narrow tongue extended, looks indifferent to the whole affair. (Disclaimer: this is a joke about how quickly I was taken with and utterly delighted by this animal upon learning of its existence. I am not attracted romantically to dinosaurs.)

5) A headshot of the artist, with a small moustache drawn on and lines down from either side of the mouth like a nutcracker’s hinged jaw, in a peaked cap with an anchor emblem. (I was going for sort of a Toy Soldier-type sona, and I know mine looks very similar to its inspiration, but I can’t help that I look like that and these kinds of service uniforms have a lot of common design elements. This character would be maybe a clockwork lightkeeper.)

6) A drawing of my grandparents: a bent-over, ancient, serene-looking man with two watches on each wrist, and an elderly woman with curly hair and beady eyes, wearing a large chunky necklace and waving.

7) A very simplified drawing of my sorclock, Piper, wielding their meteor hammer. They are drawn as little more than a triangle and a quadrilateral with arms and dotted eyes, and a few lines for their characteristic hair, with two ellipses for the ends of the hammer, rotating too fast to be seen.

8) Solace, in his peaked cap and coat, laying face-down in the snow, given up. All that can be seen from under his hat are his pointed ears, and tufts of hair in every direction. Behind him are a few telltale footprints, marking his path, and fat, blurred snowflakes fall across the whole of the image.

During our geography class, our teacher gave us some work sheets to fill out, but she accidentally gave one of my classmates a version with all the correct answers. My classmate than took a picture of it and sent it to our groupchat, so everyone had it done in like 20 minutes.

China revealed this week it aims to spend more than a billion dollars to bolster manufacturing and domestic tech in a bid to remain globally competitive, while divulging little new support for the struggling real estate market.

Industrial support clearly ranked first on Beijing’s priority list for the year ahead, according to three major plans released this week as part of China’s annual parliamentary meetings.

One of those reports, from the Ministry of Finance, said the central government would allocate 10.4 billion yuan ($1.45 billion) “to rebuild industrial foundations and promote high-quality development of the manufacturing sector.”

While that’s down from the 13.3 billion yuan earmarked for the same category last year, the sector overall gained greater prominence. In 2023, plans to spend on industrial development came second to support for consumption.

“Unlike other economies that went through a wrenching adjustment in their housing market, China’s investment rate isn’t falling,” HSBC’s chief Asia economist Frederic Neumann and a team said in a report Friday. “Instead, [capital expenditure] is shifting towards infrastructure and, importantly, manufacturing.”[...]

Chinese authorities in 2020 intensified a crackdown on real estate developers’ high reliance on debt for growth. Property sales have since plunged while developers have run out of money to finish many projects, cutting into what was once about 25% of China’s GDP when including related sectors such as construction.[...]

Despite widespread attention on whether Beijing would bail out the property sector, real estate got no mention in the finance ministry’s spending plans, and limited attention in a ministry-level press conference about the economy during the parliamentary meetings. Instead, the housing minister was included in the lineup for a press conference about people’s livelihoods.

“Supporting the modernization of the industrial system” came first in the finance ministry’s report, followed by “supporting the implementation of the strategy of invigorating China through science and education.”

Within that second priority, the finance ministry said it would allocate 31.3 billion yuan for improving vocational education. Amid high youth unemployment, especially for university graduates, electric car company BYD and battery maker CATL are among those working with vocational schools to train staff for their expanding workforce.[...]

The report from the National Development and Reform Commission, the top economic planner, reiterated government plans to support some developers’ financing needs — under the eighth item on the priority list that called for preventing financial risks. The government work report presented by Premier Li Qiang gave real estate a similar level of prominence.

China will improve home sales in a "forceful" and "orderly" way, Minister of Housing and Urban-Rural Development Ni Hong said on Saturday (Mar 9), as weak demand in the country's beleaguered residential property market persists.[...]

Some developers should be allowed to go bankrupt or restructured according to legal and market-based rules, Ni said told a press conference on the sidelines of the annual meeting of parliament in Beijing.

Premier Li Qiang said this week that China will quicken the development of "a new model" for the troubled sector, focussing on building more affordable housing and meeting demand for homes.

But China will insist that "housing is for living in, not for speculation" when formulating a new development model for the sector, Ni said, reiterating an official line against property speculation.

Loblaw Companies Limited continues to see gains in profit and revenue as Canadians struggle to keep up with the soaring cost of living.

The grocery giant reported a profit of $508 million available to its common shareholders from its second quarter this year. That's an increase of $121 million, or 31.3 per cent, compared to last year.

This increase is, in part, due to a one-time charge of $111 million related to a PC Bank commodity tax matter, clarifies the report.

The Loblaws and Shoppers Drug Mart parent company's revenue for the second quarter, which ended on June 17, amounted to a whopping $13.7 billion. It increased by $891 million, or 6.9 per cent, from last year.

"Our businesses remain focused on providing Canadians with the selection, freshness, care and value they need today," said Loblaw chairman and president Galen G. Weston in a statement. [...]

Because people still don't get it I'm going to give an example about how height impacts perceived weight. BMI, whilst a flawed measurement in some regards, is quite useful here as it is a ratio between height and weight (BMI = mass (kg)/height^2 (m)).

At 1.86m and 239lbs (108.4kg) I have a BMI of 31.3

If I was a foot shorter at 5'1 (1.55m) and weighed the same I would have a BMI of 45.1.

In order for me to get the same BMI of 45.1 I would have to weigh about 344lbs (156kg)

There are SO many other factors that impact the appearance of someone's weight but height itself just has such an enormous impact on the perception of someone's size. Trust me, this annoys me more than you, I WISH I looked fatter than I do but unfortunately this is just how reality works.

A 33-year-old New Zealand woman who was accused of faking debilitating symptoms has died of Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (EDS).

Stephanie Aston, 33, passed away in her home in Auckland on 1 September, the New Zealand Herald reports.

Aston became an advocate for patients' rights after doctors refused to take her EDS symptoms seriously and blamed them on mental illness. She was just 25 when those symptoms began in October 2015. At the time, she did not know she had inherited the health condition.

EDS refers to a group of inherited disorders caused by gene mutations that weaken the connective tissues, according to the National Institutes of Health (NIH). These tissues are responsible for many important functions, and they support the skin, bones, blood vessels, and other organs.

Symptoms of EDS include fragile, small blood vessels; loose joints; abnormal scar formation; abnormal wound healing; and soft, stretchy, velvety skin that bruises easily, per the NIH.

There are at least 13 different types of EDS, and the conditions range from mild to life-threatening. EDS is extremely rare: Only one in every 5,000 people have it. Patients with EDS can sometimes receive treatments that might help manage their symptoms—such as physical therapy—but there is no cure for the illness. People who live with EDS often have to restructure their lives to learn how to protect their joints and prevent injuries.

Aston sought medical help after her symptoms—which included severe migraines, abdominal pain, joint dislocations, easy bruising, iron deficiency, fainting, tachycardia, and multiple injuries—began in 2015, per the New Zealand Herald. She was referred to Auckland Hospital, where a doctor accused her of causing her own illness.

Because of his accusations, Aston was placed on psychiatric watch. She had to undergo rectal examinations and was accused of practising self-harming behaviours. She was suspected of faking fainting spells, fevers, and coughing fits, and there were also suggestions that her mother was physically harming her.

There was no basis for the doctor’s accusations that her illness was caused by psychiatric issues, Aston told the New Zealand Herald. “There was no evaluation prior to this, no psych consultation, nothing,” she said.

She eventually complained to the Auckland District Health Board and the Health and Disability Commissioner of New Zealand. “I feel like I have had my dignity stripped and my rights seriously breached,” she said.

Research suggests women are often much more likely to be misdiagnosed than men. A 2009 study of patients with heart disease symptoms found 31.3 per cent of middle-aged women “received a mental health condition as the most certain diagnosis”, compared to just 15.6 per cent of their male counterparts. Additionally, a 2020 study found that as many as 75.2 per cent of patients with endometriosis—a painful disorder that affects the tissue of the uterus—had been misdiagnosed after they started experiencing endometriosis symptoms. Among those women, nearly 50 per cent were told they had a “mental health problem”.

One reason women’s health conditions are often ignored or misdiagnosed could come down to where the research stands. A 2022 paper states that “females remain broadly under-represented in the medical literature, sex and gender are poorly reported and inadequately analysed in research, and misogynistic perceptions continue to permeate the narrative”. Women’s pain, in particular, is especially under-researched: 70 per cent of people with chronic pain are women, yet 80 per cent of available studies on pain have focused on men or male mice, per Harvard Health Publishing.

here at the end of the Number Tournament, I think it's a good idea to reflect on all sixty-four competitors, and see how well they did.

the main metric I'll be using to rank these is "total relative support", which is the number of votes each number got, divided by how many people participated in the polls they were in. I'll also be considering the pre-tournament number submission form to be one of these polls, with 2277 votes.
