Them! Them! Them! They have taken over my brain!!!
[Image: a digital drawing of all nine of the Mechanisms, in a simple style with an emphasis on shapes and vibes, playing their instruments. Nastya stands playing her viola and stares judgmentally off to the side. Tim strums his guitar energetically, with his hair and coat flowing behind him. Jonny crouches with his legs and arms spread out, holding his microphone and glaring forward with a wide smile. The Toy Soldier stands tall and salutes, with its mandolin strapped to its chest. Marius grins and stands with his arms spread out as he holds his violin and bow. Brian stands and plays his accordion, with his face mostly hidden behind the instrument. Raphaella stands and plays her keyboard, with her wings outstretched and her hair flowing behind her, her eyes closed in a serene expression and her head turned to the side. Ivy sits cross-legged crouched over her flute, which she is playing. Ashes stands with a chill and unbothered expression as they play their bass. End ID.]
ID by @fivesevenseveneight (with minor alterations)! Thank you very much for the addition. Accessibility should always come first! I’ve left the original silly ID under the cut for posterity and for those who found it funny.
[Silly ID: a digital drawing of all nine of the Mechanisms, in a simple style with an emphasis on shapes and vibes, playing their instruments. Nastya looks like a judgemental capital A. Tim is going hardcore on a wonkily drawn guitar. Jonny looks like a raccoon about to cannonball into a dumpster to feast. The Toy Soldier looks like a pencil that stood up and put clothes on, saluting. Marius has his arms outstretched charismatically. Brian is a good boy. Raphaella is probably the most abstracted, which makes sense because she’s also the most science. Ivy is curled up like a little flute-playing egg. Ashes is just chilling and playing the bass. End ID.]

it drives me bonkers the way people don't know how to read classic books in context anymore. i just read a review of the picture of dorian gray that said "it pains me that the homosexual subtext is just that, a subtext, rather than a fully explored part of the narrative." and now i fully want to put my head through a table. first of all, we are so lucky in the 21st century to have an entire category of books that are able to loudly and lovingly declare their queerness that we've become blind to the idea that queerness can exist in a different language than our contemporary mode of communication. second it IS a fully explored part of the narrative! dorian gray IS a textually queer story, even removed from the context of its writing. it's the story of toxic queer relationships and attraction and dangerous scandals and the intertwining of late 19th century "uranianism" and misogyny. second of all, i'm sorry that oscar wilde didn't include 15k words of graphic gay sex with ao3-style tags in his 1890 novel that was literally used to convict him of indecent behaviour. get well soon, i guess...

Okay but if you put R.M. Renfield, Dorian Gray, and Victor Frankenstein in a room together who is winning that fight?

[Image: an ambigram that reads “Ashes” in one rotation and “Hades” in the other, with both displayed, one on top of the other. The letters have long descenders and sharp, tilted tips, evocative of flames. Both are coloured in brightly glowing gradients of fire, with “Ashes” in orange and red tones and “Hades” in cyans and blues. End ID.]

There is something about classic literature that hits different - which is not to say that modern literature lacks depth - there is just something so incredible about reading something and knowing that these same words were consumed by people decades, centuries before you took your first breath. And they loved and felt the stories the way you do& despite all the time separating you you’re still connected…

LITERATURE SERIES: Classic Horror
“The horror genre never dies. It just keeps getting reinvented and it always will. Horror is a universal language; we're all afraid. We're born afraid, we're all afraid of things: death, disfigurement, loss of a loved one. Everything that I'm afraid of, you're afraid of and vice versa. So everybody feels fear and suspense.” —John Carpenter

perpetually torn between:
taking classic literature seriously and over analysing every detail so that I can deeply understand themes, motifs and references and absorb every poetic quote into my being OR treating classics as if they were just silly little stories about silly little gay people doing the most weird, unhinged and out of context shit ever (which they are)
