The Terror: When, How, Where... (PART 1)

See part 2 for the end of my sanity (ep 6 through 9. Wasn't enough characters left on the post for ep 10)

See part 3 (and episode 10)

As I am writing the fic, I was getting frustrated at trying to figure out the timeline of the expedition. More specifically, what happens after they dropped the Victory Point Note.

Therefore, in order to organize my ideas, and also because it might be of interests to some of you, I will document here what I got.

Episode 1 through 5 for now.

Methodology

If we agree that the showrunners (and Dan Simmons to an extent) made their research, we should be able to match some of the event of the story with notable point of interests where artefacts and/or remains were found over the numerous searches made to ascertain the fate of the Franklin Expedition

I also tried to take note of all indications of time passing so that I might document their speed travel and the dates when they are not mentioned.

... And the death count. (Departing Beechey Island with 24 officers and 102 men)

Finally, I also used the following website to keep track of sunrises and sunsets: https://www.timeanddate.com/

1927 Admiralty Map

I may be an amateur in this kind of research but I find myself frustrated that the most complete map I've been able to find showing all that was found between 1850 and 1926 is shown on this map from 1927

To be noted, we now know that the Skeleton of H. Peglar was more probably W. Gibson or T. Armitage

The Skeleton of Lt. Le Vesconte has also been reevaluated and is now believed to be that of Harry Goodsir ( :( )

Also, as it happens, if we compare to 2024 maps, we can say that this is not the actual shape of KWI (close enough!).

Therefore, for my own sanity, I recreated with modern maps. Is it accurate? Well, I wouldn't publish it but I think it gives a good enough view of where they went and where they were going:

Where the Ships had drifted to in June 1847 (According to G. Gore's coordinates left on the Victory point note)

Matching the Show

Episode 1 - Go for Broke

Location 1 - David Young's grave (71.22, -96.60)

Date: September 5th 1846

Nighttime - None

Daylight - 14h 57 min

Twilight - 9h 03 min

Sunset: 7:51 PM - Sunrise: 4:55 AM

David Young was buried 7 days before they were beset in the ice (see point 3 on the map below).

During the dinner in which we were regaled by the tale of Mr. Fitzjames' Holes, Franklin discuss that they were approaching a bigger channel, which is now know as the McClintock Channel (see point 1 on the map below), meaning that at the time, they were still in the Franklin Strait.

On the day after his death, Franklin discuss their next course and assure that they must be 'nearly in sight of KW Land'. Crozier suggests it might take them weeks to actually make it to KWI. This would confirm what was infer above.

As we can see the two ships fitting in a cozy little cove while the grave is being dug, I would like to propose Point 4 on the map below as Ficitonal David Young's final resting place, on Tasmania Islands

Location 2 - Ships September 1846 (70.25, -98.00)

Date: September 12th 1846

Nighttime - None

Daylight - 13h 45 min

Twilight - 10h 15 min

Sunset: 7:19 PM - Sunrise: 5:34 AM

Well, for this one, we need to use the extrapolation provided by the 1927's Admiralty map by tracing the line from where the ships were known to be in 1847 and 1848 (Point 5 and 6). (see point 3)

Distance between Loc 1 and Loc 2 :70 NM / 80 Miles / 130 km

Average Travel Speed - 11.4 miles a day

Episode 2 - Gore

Location 3 - The Ships in 1847 (70.15, -98.30)

Date: May 24th 1847

From the ships, Gore lead his party to James Clark Ross' Cairn.

Now, in the Show, they found JCR's Cairn without an issue. In reality, while Gore had found the Cairn just fine, Crozier and Fitzjames did not. One of the reason for it is that JCR had, apparently, made a miscalculation in reporting where he had erected the Cairn by several miles. Honestly, the way that Fitzjames had written the words was so confusing, I appreciate that the show made the whole thing so much simpler, ahah. So let's say that it matches what we know now as Victory Point. Easy Peasy! (see Point 2)

To be Noted, we know the dates of departure from ships and arrival at cairn from the Victory Point Note.

Location 5 - The Ice Camp (69.665, -98.32)

Date: May 28th 1847

Nighttime - None

Daylight - 24h min

Twilight - None

Sunset: N/A - Sunrise: N/A

The Camp was raised just beyond the ice ridge that blocked the way form the shore and the Cairn was only a mile or so away. (see Point 3... hidden between point 2)

Of Note: That hail storm's cloud coverage was intense to say the least... So dark :')

This one is fun because, well... they're not moving! I could point out where Silna ends up but it looks like she remain close enough to the ships that it doesn't matter all that much. So, let's just make note of the date and events:

Episode 4 - Punished, As a Boy

They searched for a long time if it was just before 4 pm when they got the alarm and then they came back in time for last sunrise at 11 am...

Episode 5 - First Shot the Winner, Lads

More fun in a bottle. These boys are not going far...

Honestly, for this one, the trouble was figuring out how much time had passed. For one, we know it's not yet Christmas because Christmas is, in fact, mentioned in Episode 6 (And Lady Jane's Christmas Pudding, hear hear) as part of the meeting between the officer and there was not yet a cooperation between the Terror Lts and Fitzjames for counting the supplies.

ALSO! That scene where Mr. Wentzell got killed dead over his nail... well, it gave me the feeling that either the review of the crew is not daily or that they've been on Erebus for a short time because 1) Fitzjames doesn't know their names and 2) He has to repeat the instructions about cleanliness... Perhaps they sent the Terrors in waves and not all 50 of them at once.

Other details to be mentionned:

Hickey is not recovered yet and Goodsir suspects he might reopen his wounds from working.

Goodsir has had time to be quite good at speaking inuktitut. Now, he could have had a continuous learning experience from Dr. McDonald since June 47 and before but considering that Dr. McDonald is stationed in Terror and Goodsir in Erebus, I suspect they did not have much time to have a class together...

Finally. Crozier suggests that he would be 2, perhaps, perhaps more... sick from sobering up. He got up just in time for First sunrise (Jan 17th).

So! We can infer that the episode might have spanned over 1 or 2 days (what's with the movement between the ships and the whole Rat Wedding).

My best guess is that the dates for this whole episode would be:

Date: December 14th 1847 to December 18th 1847

Nighttime - 13h 32 min

Daylight - None

Twilight - 11h 28min

Sunset: N/A - Sunrise: N/A

Why December 14th? Because it would be Edward Little's Birthday and I feel like it is appropriate for his character to have his boss send him back to the killing cold for more booze :') (December 16th to December 20th seems more likely but...)

This would give Crozier a full month to recover from sobering up and 22 days for Goodsir to learn inuktitut (impressive!), for Hickey backside to feel better and for Fitzjames to NOT learn the name of his new Terrors.

Conclusion to the first sets of episode: Sunsets and Sunrises were whacky in June 1847 but, so far, distance and travel times make good sense. If the accuracy holds up until episode 10, we might be able to have a pretty good idea of what, when and where everything happened in episodes 6 through 10.

Tw: Homofobia, feminicidio, violaciones y pedo.

Hace poco hice un ensayo. Entre los temas tocados y las reflexiones llegadas hubo un apartado donde hable un poco sobre la crueldad hacia las mujeres en el cine.

Argumenté lo de siempre, haciendo hincapié en la creación de símbolos y los trasfondos detrás, y como existe una línea fina que sin contexto vuelve al arte morbo. Comenté un poco sobre cómo en contextos capitalistas se suele arrancar al símbolo de su contexto brindando una imagen fuerte, y muchas veces de mal gusto, a un producto de consumo.

He dado vueltas al asunto con nuevos ejemplos. En el ensayo me quedé en personajes de la época moderna en relación con productos de consumo materiales, o al menos fabricados en base a la esperanza de consumo de los fans de aquellos personajes que sufrieron.

Ahora he encontrado algo similar en el sentido de arrancar una imagen de contexto y por lo tanto volverla un símbolo diluido en el consumo. No en un sentido tan directamente capitalista, más una consecuencia del público en sí.

Primero me pasó con Possibly in Michigan. Su canción Animal Cannibal ha ganado popularidad en tik tok desde hace unos años. Es extraño, no solo como fan del corto sino también como alguien que comprende el contexto y tema de él. El pedazo actualmente famoso dice: “How do I meet the strangest men? They always seems to find me. Remember that time way back when I kiss a guy who ate his woman’s friends? Now only dogs follow me”. La letra y el corto en su presentación y creación habla de la violencia misógina hacia las mujeres, una violencia que lleva a feminicidios, erróneamente catalogados como “crímenes pasionales”, y de la que además se suele culpar a las mujeres, en un proceso de re victimización que acaba generando culpa en las victimas. La creadora del corto hizo esta obra como catarsis después de convivir con un hombre que asesino mujeres, su miedo, su necesidad de no ser culpable, ni de convertirse en él son representadas en la obra. Escuchar un audio tan crudo y personal en un iceberg de cosas supuestamente turbias de la serie más popular y sencilla de Netflix, se siente mal, como una devaluación de un símbolo.

En una misma línea me pasó algo similar con La Morte Vivante.

Vi compartida esta imagen con la caption “Me as gf”. Le di like sin pensarlo mucho, he visto la película y en repetidas ocasiones he mencionado como conecto personalmente con la historia, con la protagonista, su culpa y miedo, presentados originalmente con objetivos homofóbicos me han servido como catarsis.

La escena, es una de las más crudas de la película, la chica que le da el brazo a la protagonista del plano para que se alimente de ella, en ese momento comprende la naturaleza monstruosa de la que alguna vez fue su amiga de la infancia pero que en realidad ama. La protagonista del plano es una bestia en esta toma, apenas tiene consciencia, la acción ocurre porque la chica del brazo lo quiere, al descubrir a este monstruo quiere aprovechar la oportunidad de una intimidad, una intimidad tan monstrificada que solo se presenta como sangrienta, como consumidora. Como desmorlizante para la que toma la sangre, mortal para quien se deja beber, y deshumanizante para ambas.

Cometí el error de ver los comentarios y darme cuenta de que todos los comentarios eran parejas (heterosexuales) hablando de cómo a las novias les gusta morder a sus novios. No está mal per se. Tal vez mi ofensa sea de las menos válidas, pero el contexto solo es importante como una representación de la culpa por sentir deseo homosexual, sin duda sigue siendo una desimbolización.

Por último y la que más me duele.

El cine de terror gótico tiene la maldición de ser extremadamente bello y cautivador. Su estética es agradable, pensada y artística, esto junto con sus referencias a la brujería y demonios sin ser realmente ocultista la hace popular en un sentido de estética. Es una maldición porque los temas que toca no son ni de cerca tan agradables y digeribles como su estética.

Valerie a Tyden Divu es relativamente popular por su estética, escenas de la película salen en fairy cores, cottage cores etc. Había visto esta imagen hace muchos años, aun de vez en cuando la encuentro. Siempre la encuentro en un contexto de quirkiness/vale madrismo, de entrada lo parece, en parte lo es, pero el trasfondo, el contexto es mucho más obscuro que una respuesta above all de Valerie.

En esta escena Valerie es acusada de brujería, puesta para ser quemada. No es la única crueldad que sufre Valerie en su semana de maravillas. Este momento es injusto, Valerie ha sido acusada de impura por el padre de su iglesia, el padre de su iglesia la intentó violar unos días antes, en esta escena la acusa de haberlo tentado, su respuesta no es solo una burla, es ella, contestado como una niña, jugado como una niña, una representación más de la injusticia de su castigo.

Aún siendo inocente la mierda lujuriosa de un hombre viejo ha caído sobre ella, esta mirada la ha condenado le ha arrancado con violencia su inocencia, a los ojos del mundo, y hasta la percepción de ella sobre ella misma, contesta como un statement de inocencia, pero esta misma infantilidad es quemada en el fuego juzgador de la hoguera, que no purifica, solo oscurece.

No creo que sea malo que las películas y los productos se vuelvan famosos. Me da gusto que lo sean, mucha gente (incluyéndome) han encontrado obras importantes en su vida por Pinterest, tumblr, TikTok. Pero no se, me sigue dando un mal sabor de boca ver referencias sobre homosexualidad mounstrificada, escuchar canciones sobre feminicidios y escenas sobre sexualización de menores en contextos tan poco conscientes de la importancia de los temas que están hablando.

TROUBLE WITH THE CARVE

Opening this week:

Thanksgiving--Slasher movies of the '70s and early '80s were often holiday-themed. Black Christmas, Halloween, My Bloody Valentine, Silent Night, Deadly Night, New Year's Evil and April Fool's Day are all examples, while Friday the 13th and Happy Birthday to Me, while not strictly about holidays, are still tied to special dates and the convenient unity of time they provide. But Thanksgiving was somehow the major holiday the genre seemed to miss.

There actually were a couple of little-remembered attempts--Home Sweet Home in 1981 and Blood Rage in 1987. But neither seemed to count, perhaps because they didn't use the holiday in the title, or perhaps because they didn't sufficiently exploit the gruesome possibilities offered by the day's rituals. Whatever else may be said about it, the newly-made but self-consciously old-school slasher picture Thanksgiving works hard to include every classic Turkey Day trope.

A shoppers' riot and stampede at a store that shouldn't be open on Thanksgiving leads to bedlam and grisly death in a small Massachusetts town. "One Year Later"--as a subtitle traditionally informs us--a figure in the mask and garb of a Pilgrim skulks around exacting vengeance on those deemed responsible for the disaster. Everything eventually converges in a ghastly sit-down dinner.

The film traces its inception back to 2007, when two movies, the Robert Rodriguez shocker Planet Terror and Quentin Tarantino's stunt thriller Death Proof, were released as a double feature under the joint title Grindhouse. In and around the two features, the show included several "fake trailers" for fictitious grindhouse-style movies. Two of these have already wagged the dog as the basis for real features, Machete (2010) and Hobo With a Shotgun (2011); Thanksgiving marks the third.

Directed by Eli Roth, the Thanksgiving trailer in Grindhouse captured the nastiest, most low-rent atmosphere of a vintage gore movie, complete with scratched, faded footage, some really sleazo shocks, and the smarmy, glottal tones of the narrator (Roth himself?). You could almost believe it wasn't a put-on.

The new feature, directed by Roth from a script by Jeff Rendell, doesn't try for this level of faux-authenticity. The setting is contemporary, the budget clearly comfortable, and cell phones and social media figure prominently in the plot. But the movie still has a nice old-fashioned pace and structure and flavor, and the nostalgia of this is much of what makes it unsavory fun.

I'll admit that in recent years I've largely lost my stomach for slasher flicks. Moreover, I thought Roth's 2002 debut feature Cabin Fever was an interesting misfire at best, and I took a pass on his 2005 torture flick Hostel. But he strikes an affectionate tone here, and he employs techniques that distance us from compassion for the victims. Most simply and effectively, he makes many of them, especially the early ones, deeply and amusingly unsympathetic.

The cast is livened up by some veterans, like Patrick Dempsey, Rick Hoffman and Gina Gershon, and the "final girl" (Nell Verlaque) has a lovely presence, and unlike so many heroines back in the day, she fights back, resourcefully and successfully. It was also great to see Lynne Griffin, the first victim from 1974's Black Christmas--and the Hamlet figure in the Bob and Doug McKenzie movie Strange Brew--in a bit here.

Most notably, the film keeps it light. As with two other movies from earlier this year, Cocaine Bear and Renfield, Thanksgiving goes in for extreme, over-the-top splatter effects, and they aren't scary, nor do they seem meant to be. They aren't even all that gross. There's no visceral substance to them; the bodies of the victims go to pieces like gingerbread men, and the effect, seemingly deliberate, is cartoonish slapstick. We're about as likely to take their suffering seriously as that of Wile E. Coyote.

Maybe it's how entertainment like this works best: as a sort of anarchic Punch and Judy show, using humans instead of puppets. Like Thanksgiving dinner, it wouldn't be healthy to consume this sort of thing every day, but about once a year, it can hit the spot.

FAMILY

father : giovanni lorenzo ferro ( pierce brosnan fc ). an english-italian former formula 1 driver who raced with mclaren, ferrari, and williams. has four world championships under his belt and retired in 2001. currently the team principal of the mclaren f1 team.

stepfather : david gideon langdon ( tbd fc ). an english drummer for the rock band the kicks, which was popular in the 70s and 80s.

siblings : max has three biological older siblings from his father's marriage with his mother and a twin sister, older step siblings from his stepfather's prior marriages, and two younger paternal half-sisters, casey (24, gracie abrams fc ), a singer, and mia ( kaia gerber fc ), a model.

HISTORY

max was born in portofino, italy, to a french mother and an english-italian father. camila boucher is a socialite, businesswoman and one of the world's most in-demand supermodels in the 80s while giovanni ferro is a former four-time formula 1 world champion until his retirement in 2001.

with the twins being the youngest and both parents having been busy with their own careers (mom was always doing business stuff and dad was constantly traveling for his races), max and his twin sister were raised by nannies who max would constantly terrorize, so his mother would keep having to find replacements after they quit.

max's father made him get into karting at age 4, but giovanni was too intense all the time (think jos verstappen but not as successful lmao) and max just wasn't as serious about it as he was. it wasn't until after sustaining a head injury from a huge accident during a tournament when he was eight that his mother made him stop karting.

being such a hyperactive little boy, now he had all that energy and nowhere to put it, which posed a problem for the family, especially after he set the living room carpet on fire one christmas eve, his parents made the decision to ship him off to a boarding school in turin, italy, where his paternal grandfather lived, when he was just 9 years old.

he would stay in boarding school until he was thirteen, and it was only thanks to rather hefty donations from his family that he wasn't expelled almost immediately for the trouble he often caused.

however, boarding school wasn't an entirely futile endeavor — in fact, it was here that he discovered his love for music after curriculum-mandated music lessons had him learning how to play the trumpet and, later on, the drums.

by the time he returned to america, his parents were already divorced and his mother was just about to get remarried to dave langdon, the drummer for the kicks, a popular english rock band in the 70s and 80s.

dave was great, and he was very good to his mother in a way that his father often wasn't. it didn't take long for max to acclimate to dave as a father figure, and it helped that music was something that they got to bond over.

max recorded his first song when he was fourteen. he then burned his first EP in CDs he would submit to music producers and sell to people so he can buy new gear (his family had the means to buy it for him and dave does give him old gear and gifts him some for birthdays and christmases, but he wanted to feel like he was building something for himself, you know?). nobody ever bought anything, so he resorted to just giving the CDs away on the street.

started DJing when he was 17 in clubs in new york city, adapting the stage name BADSIGNS, which he's since then been using for all his musical ventures. still below the legal age of drinking, dave used to pay the club owners not to give max any alcohol, though it was easy to slip past that measure.

got into juilliard where he majored in composition while continuing to spin in clubs. here, he got really into the party scene, started drinking heavily, developed a pill dependence, did a lot of cocaine.

initially gained popularity for the remixes he would play in clubs and later post to this attracted the attention of local artists who wanted to collaborate with him, a lot of whom have actually made it big now.

he dropped out of juilliard on his third year after he got signed on to his first record label.

his sound has evolved from hip hop and jazz and funk to dance and pop throughout the years but claims to take inspiration from a variety of genres and eclectic influences.

started ghostwriting songs for big artists under the moniker g. gagne (his middle name and his mother's maiden name) since he was 21 but it wasn't until he was 25 that he started getting proper credit.

when he was 23, he was involved in a scandal when he entered a relationship with a married actress twenty-five years his senior. after the actress and her husband divorced, she and max lived together in new york city. they were together for an entire year, after which, the actress and her ex-husband got back together. just a few weeks later, max would land himself in the hospital after overdosing on oxy, which he claims to have been an accident.

can be quite a workaholic and always wants to be busy and stimulated. has been putting out record after record since he started his career, producing music for artists big and small, making remixes, and has even gotten into film scoring.

formed his own record label, futz records, in 2016 as an imprint of columbia records where he signed a newcomer (who would later be a frequent and favorite collaborator of his) and several other small artists.

in 2020, he bought a house in los angeles adjoined to his own personal studio where he prefers to work most of the time since everything, from the interior to the equipment, is pretty much customized and personally handpicked.

in 2021, he along with a childhood friend, opened their own nightclub in hollywood called terrazzo (known affectionately as the razz by celebrities and locals) which he says initially came to be because he wanted to give smaller artists a platform to introduce themselves, as there are performances every night. max spins only on the weekends.

HEADCANONS

was the drummer for a small band called the confectioners with two friends from LA when he was 13. it definitely started as a gag and the songs they would write are largely inspired by weird al yankovic but then they realized that they actually sounded good, got to play a couple of gigs in the city, but it wasn't anything they took seriously. the three are still good friends.

still very much into cars, hence why a lot of his records tend to be car-themed. he still enjoys karting in his free time and attends grands prix whenever he can, also to support his father.

the karting accident he had when he was 4 and the head injury he sustained from it had affected his fine motor skills, which makes tasks such as writing with a pen or pencil, doing or undoing his buttons, or tying his shoelaces difficult. it isn't so bad when he's playing musical instruments since he's normally very focused and the actions are continuous, but he does have some bad days.

also related to the head injury are the recurring headaches and migraines he's had since he was around 7 years old, which is how he managed to get prescriptions to painkillers he overdosed on.

max is an avid gamer and has a twitch account ( twitch.tv/mister.ferret ) where he sometimes streams himself and his friends playing games. he especially likes sim racing and sometimes even streams with f1 drivers from the current grid.

A Clash of Kings - 70 APPENDIX

Well, a lot has happened this book just gone, the kings called their banners proper and the numbers went up and down like a pogo stick, and about as dangerous, everyone has been doing their best despite having a really bad time.

We lost some NPCs non-POV characters, and I for one will miss Luwin greatly. MVP.

There is one thing I would like to talk about today: I do try to give each character a fair go when I read their chapter, but sometimes irl stuff does affect how I'm interacting with the text and the characters, if you feel that I've been unfair to a character in my over simplified chapter summaries, it is okay to let me know.

I bring this up because I was very unfair toward Theon during one of his chapters, and someone pointed it out to me. I changed the summary to apply blame properly, it wasn't a problem, especially since they were right.

This may not apply for the main body of the review, because that's intentionally an opinion bit, whether we agree or not. But the summary parts, those are an easy edit.

A STORM OF SWORDS

Moving into the next book, I am going to do it in two parts, Steel and Snow, and Blood and Gold, just because thats how my physical copies are split, and it breaks the 80+ chapters into two 40-ish chapter books. It gives me more half way rest days, and given how nail biting the action and emotions are getting, I'm going to need them.

I have been thinking about adding some more rest days, but we'll see when we see.

How has the Moon network played a role in the post-9/11 U.S. Imperialist strategy?

We often think about how the Moon network played a role in anti-communist efforts that ended up murdering thousands from the 70s into the 80s, but in what ways has the Moon network played a role in post-9/11 international policies around surveillance and security?

We should more deeply examine post-9/11 counterinsurgency work that the UC has taken up, especially consider the millions of deaths that have come out of the so-called “War on Terror.”

A recent study shows that, apart from the million direct casualties of the War(s) on Terror, over 3,000,000 people died from the conditions created by those wars.

How has Moon’s Universal Peace Federation played a role in this, including through the International Association of Parliamentarians for Peace (IAPP), Podgorica Club, South Asia Peace Initiative (SAPI), and other UPF-initiated groups?

We know bits and pieces of how the UC’s organizations have been used for international relations and policies, including in Nepal, the DPRK, the Philippines, a number of Southeastern European countries, etc., in the past decade... but there’s still so much more to be exposed.
