Texas oil man Clint Murchison decided it was time for his side of the political spectrum to bankroll Hollywood movies and resist the current films he considered Commie propaganda. Murchison financed The Alamo starring John Wayne.
The authors of the biography John Wayne: American wrote:
“To Wayne the message of the movie was that Americans needed to be ready once again to take a firm stand against aggression and dictatorship.”
But the film seemed cursed. It was plagued by bad weather, cost overruns,  personality conflicts - and murder.
Twenty-six year old LaJean Guye Ethridge and her boyfriend Chester Harvey Smith arrived in Texas to work as extras in the film. Impressed with her presence, Wayne upgraded Ethridge to a small speaking role. She was provided her own private dressing room - leaving her fellow extras behind.
“She was getting a better part in the movie and she was moving out on [boyfriend] Smith and the others,” explained the local sheriff. “He thought he was going to lose her.”
“Smith angrily declared she could not leave,” reported the Associated Press. “As she emerged from her bedroom, he met her in a hallway [and] suddenly drew Miss Ethridge toward him and thrust a 5-inch hunting knife into her chest.”
As she gasped her final breath, she uttered, “I love you,” and fell to the ground.
The Alamo received bad reviews and was accused of distorting history.
The New Yorker said John Wayne had turned the story of the Alamo “into sentimental and preposterous flapdoodle … Nothing in The Alamo is serious … nothing in it is true … a model of distortion and vulgarization.”
The Los Angeles Mirror said you could “be the most ardent of American patriots and still think The Alamo was a mediocre movie.”
Points of View film journal concluded, “In its epic disregard for history or fairness, and in its myriad misrepresentative details, THE ALAMO is nothing more than a famous site and battle shamelessly transformed into nationalistic propaganda.”
Chill Wills, one of the character actors in the film, lobbied for an Oscar nomination. He purchased a full-page ad in Variety: “We of the Alamo cast are praying – harder than the real Texans prayed for their lives in the Alamo – for Chill Wills to win the Oscar as Best Supporting Actor.”
The ad was widely criticized. John Wayne said the content of the ad was “untrue,” “irresponsible,” and “bad taste.”
The Alamo underperformed, critics were unkind, and its financial backers lost money.
The John Birch Society hailed it as a “return of cinema art.”
Clint Murchison went on to bankroll George Lincoln Rockwell and the American Nazi Party.

Outlook
The Broncos could lose all of their division this season. Overall Kansas City is averaging 29 points per game, while the Broncos average 15. In divisional play KC is averaging 31 points per game, while Denver averages 21. Both defenses give up 27 points per game in the division.
Over the last month the Broncos offense has been averaging 19 points per game. If you look back on the last three games and throw out the blowout game last week, the Broncos averaged 26 points per game on offense and the defense only gave up 25 points per game.
In the first match up, Denver trailed 27-0 and then Mahomes started to turn the ball over and which led to 28 Denver points. That was Denver's best offensive output of the season. It will be interesting to see how Denver has adjusted and if those adjustments make any difference in the outcome.

Upcoming Movies in November 2020: Streaming, VOD, and Theaters
https://ift.tt/3evPPz5
At this very moment, Halloween decorations are coming down, shattered Jack-o-Lanterns are being swept up, and bounties of candy are being traded by the most discerning of Trick ‘r Treaters. Yes, All Hallows’ Eve is done and November is here.
Seasonally that means warm sweaters and warmer, fuzzier movies at the cinema (or streamer in 2020 parlance). Even though we are still nearly two months away from Christmas, a glance at the upcoming November releases reveal it’s already the season to be jolly. But there’s more than feel-good cheer. There are also horror movies, awards contenders, and comedies to look forward to, whether in a theater or from the comfort of your own home.
Let Him Go
November 6 in the U.S. (December 11 in the UK)
Did you walk away from Man of Steel wishing you could just get a film about Kevin Costner and Diane Lane dealing with the seedy side of family life in rural America? Then you’re in luck, because Let Him Go looks like a slow-boiling thriller that actually takes advantage of their talents. In the film from writer-director Thomas Bezucha (pulling from a Larry Watson novel), the pair plays retired sheriff George Blackledge (Costner) and his wife Margaret (Lane).
After their son dies, the Blackledges’ daughter-in-law marries again, taking their grandson into a new family. But when the grieving grandparents realize her second husband is abusive, and is himself the son of even shadier figures (Lesley Manville and Jeffrey Donovan), George and Margret are roped into a nightmare of familial trauma and treachery. Do they let their grandson go, or face the scariest thing in the heartland… Manville’s Blanche Weboy.
Mank
November 13 (December 4 in the UK)
Prior to its December bow on Netflix, David Fincher’s hotly anticipated Mank will have a limited run in theaters later this month. The picture, which is already being hailed on social media as a masterpiece by many, is Fincher’s first film since 2014’s Gone Girl and has the tantalizing setup of being about the sometimes overlooked writer Herman J. Mankiewicz, co-screenwriter of Citizen Kane.
With an apparently sweltering performance by Gary Oldman as the hard drinking and morally ambivalent writer, the picture is shot in much the same style as Orson Welles’ 1941 masterpiece. Mank also pulls from other styles and seems to investigate the disputed claim by critic Pauline Kael that Mankiewicz deserved sole authorship for Citizen Kane’s script. Either way the film, which also features a screenplay by Fincher’s father, Jack Fincher, looks like one of the most unique and exciting movies of 2020.
Freaky
November 13
Writer-director Christopher Landon did an unlikely thing a few years ago with Happy Death Day: He made the Groundhog Day concept of being forced to relive the same day over and over again into a genuinely clever and amusing horror-comedy. He now seeks to do the same trick twice with Freaky, another Blumhouse Productions theatrical release that reworks the concept of Disney’s Freaky Friday with a blood-curdling twist. Instead of being about a mother and teenage daughter switching place, now the teenage girl is swapping bodies with a serial killer.
It’s a gonzo premise, which gives a lot of room for actors Kathryn Newton, as heroine Millie, and Vince Vaughn, as “the Blissfield Butcher,” to do big, bold things—especially once they switch characters.
Jingle Jangle: A Christmas Journey
November 13
Netflix’s first major Christmas movie of the 2020 season aims to be a real showstopper. How can it not be with songs by Philip Lawrence and the immeasurable John Legend? The Grammy winning pair are now trying their hand at a Christmas musical with Jingle Jangle, a toe-tapper fantasy that melds Dickensian Yuletide iconography with a star-studded cast of diverse talent.
At the center of it is Forest Whitaker as the ultimate toy inventor who’s on the brink of unveiling his masterpiece. But after it’s stolen by the dastardly Keegan-Michael Key, two children must go on an adventure to save… look, it’s a family holiday movie with John Legend songs. You’re either in or you’re out!
Ammonite
November 13 (U.S. Only)
After months on the festival circuit, Francis Lee’s much anticipated Ammonite finally arrives in theaters this month. The film stars Kate Winslet and Saoirse Ronan as a pair embarking on a forbidden romance, yes, and it also promises a look at a world on the cusp of change. Some of it will be significant and relatively sudden, with Winslet playing the pioneering paleontologist Mary Anning, who in real life reached international notoriety for her scientific discoveries of Jurassic fossils along the English Channel. Some of it will be painfully slow if nonexistent.
The latter struggle occurs when Winslet’s Anning agrees to essentially chaperone Charlotte Murchison (Ronan), the depressed wife of a wealthy benefactor. But as Anne and Charlotte’s business arrangement becomes a friendship, and then blossoms into something more, their work along the coast becomes a point of interest for not only the pair, but also all those watching from the wings. A definite awards contender, it’s one many have been waiting to see for themselves since the Toronto International Film Festival in September.
Fatman
November 13 in theaters, November 24 digital (U.S. Only)
Mel Gibson is playing Santa Claus. To reiterate, Mel “Mad Max” Gibson, is portraying old Kris Kringle.
But you should realize this isn’t your daddy’s Santa. Hell, it’s not even your Santa. But if this grindhouse VOD release somehow works… it might be one you are happy exists.

The 17 Best Christmas Horror Movies

The gist is Gibson’s Kris is a bitter burnout who has become disillusioned by the lack of Christmas Spirit out there. He’s even collaborating with the U.S. military to make ends meet. But when a lump of coal pisses off the wrong kid, that child sends a hitman (Walton Goggins) to take Santa’s head. This is like an ‘80s revenge flick, right down to Gibson’s starring role.
For better or worse, we’re intrigued.
The Princess Switch, Switched Again
November 19 (US Only)
Netflix made a sequel to The Princess Switch. You know, the holiday movie where Vanessa Hudgens plays both a posh princess and an all-American everygirl, and then they switch places like in The Parent Trap?
Either you know what we’re talking about or you don’t, and if you do, good news… they’re switching places again this month!
Run
November 20 (US only)
Run is a Hulu original that appears intent on causing teenagers around the world to think twice about their parent’s smiling concern. Because concern and smiles is what Sarah Paulson’s Diane Sherman is all about. A tightly wound “helicopter parent” if there ever was one, Diane refuses to see her daughter Chloe (Kiera Allen) as a burden. In fact, she likes Chloe just the way she is, confined to a wheelchair, helpless, and on perhaps unnecessary medication.

But when taken from Chloe’s point-of-view, this is terrifying. Too bad it will be incredibly difficult for her to run away from home. But as the title suggests… that may be what’s best, dear.
Small Axe
November 15 in the UK, November 20 in the U.S.
Rather than a single film, writer-director Steve McQueen follows up the underrated Widows with five movies in this anthology set. The BBC/Amazon co-production, which will see its premiere respectively on those platforms on each side of the pond, provides a nuanced and trenchant study of the Black experience in the United Kingdom. Each film is standalone but traces a different story or era.
For instance, the first film in the “series,” Mangrove, stars Black Panther’s Letitia Wright and tells the true story of the Mangrove Nine, who clashed with London’s Metropolitan Police in 1970, and whose trial resulted in the first judicial acknowledgment of behavior motivated by racial hatred within British law enforcement. Meanwhile John Boyega plays real life Metropolitan Police officer Leroy Logan, who joined the force with the aspiration of changing it after he saw his father assaulted by two policemen.
These promise to be probing and hopefully revelatory works of cinema, whether you view them as a collection of films or a single miniseries.
Dolly Parton’s Christmas on the Square

And did we mention Dolly wrote all 14 songs in this thing? It’s a Dolly Holiday, indeed.
Hillbilly Elegy
November 24
The Ron Howard who won an Oscar for directing A Beautiful Mind appears to be stepping to the forefront again with his first Netflix original. After spending time in the galaxy, far far away, Howard looks determined to offer a harrowing, and heartstring-pulling, account of three generations of “hillbillies” struggling for the American dream in Appalachia.
J.D. Vance (Gabriel Bosso), who is a real-life author, returns to his small town after attending Yale. Back home, he will have a reckoning with his childhood and the mother who defined it, Bev (Amy Adams). Actually Bev’s movie, Hillbilly Elegy see her experiences with J.D. and his siblings over the years from her unexpected teenage motherhood to their current estranged relationship.
Awards chatter will have you believe Adams is a Best Actress frontrunner for her turn, as is Glenn Close who plays J.D.’s grandmother Mamaw, but we imagine many might just be happy to see a family more dysfunctional than their own this Thanksgiving season.
The Croods: A New Age
November 25 in the U.S. (January 29 in the UK)
You remember The Croods, right? The DreamWorks movie about cavemen and a voice cast that includes Emma Stone, Ryan Reynolds, and Nicolas Cage… No, really, it came out in 2013! We’re serious.  Well, they made a sequel and this one also includes the voices of Peter Dinklage and Kelly Marie Tran, and it’ll be in theaters. So, yeah. There you go.
The Christmas Chronicles 2
November 25
It’s only Thanksgiving and we’re already on our fourth Christmas movie from Netflix. Yet we suspect this is going to be the one to generate the most excitement since it follows up on the first time Kurt Russell played Santa Claus as a burly mountain man of action for the streaming service.
That 2018 effort was cute, but this sequel is taking things to a whole new world—the North Pole to be exact—and will feature CG elves, a Dickensian Christmas village, and most spectacularly Goldie Hawn in more than a cameo role as Mrs. Claus.
Additionally, Chris Columbus has graduated from producer to writer-director status on this sequel. As he’s the director behind Home Alone and the first two Harry Potter films, his clout and fantastical eye promises to bring some epic holiday majesty to a film that is still about Russell kicking ass and taking names for his naughty list.
Uncle Frank
November 25
One of the most anticipated Thanksgiving releases of the year aimed at a slightly older audience, Uncle Frank appears to be a substantial film about the ties that bind. Family ties are, after all, what brings Sophia Lillis’ Beth Bledsoe to visit her dear Uncle Frank (Paul Bettany). In 1973, Frank is a charismatic and worldly relation to a small town girl like Beth. But it’s only when she crashes his Manhattan apartment that she becomes the first family member to realize Frank is gay… and a delightful companion for a grim road trip to his native home in rural South Carolina.

Superintelligence
November 26 (US), November 27 (UK)
HBO Max also brings some holiday cheer at the end of the month with Superintelligence, a new Melissa McCarthy high-concept comedy. In the film, McCarthy plays Carol Peters, a woman who believes nothing exciting ever happens to her. That changes when her smart TV, smartphone, and even smart microwave begin talking back to her.
What at first appears to be a prank is actually a test since she’s been selected for “observation” by the world’s most advanced artificial intelligence (voiced by James Corden). The AI wants to use Carol as a case study in examining the human condition… possibly as it decides to conquer us. Can Melissa McCarthy save the world?
Black Beauty
November 27
Disney+ has one major narrative film release in November, and it’s a new version of Anna Sewell’s beloved novel Black Beauty. Adapted by Ashley Avis, this is the timeless tale of a teenager and the singular bond she forms with a horse that keeps them connected for a lifetime. The 1876 novel was pivotal for a dawning appreciation of the plight of work horses in Victorian England, and the desire to treat animals more humanely. Indeed, the book is narrated from the vantage of the horse!
The new Disney film appears to be updating things, with the male horse of the novel now being voiced by Kate Winslet. It also appears to feature a modern American setting, but with a promising cast that in addition to Winslet includes up-and-comer Mackenzie Foy as heroine Jo Green and Game of Thrones’ Iain Glen as John Manly.
Possessor
November 27 (UK only)
Brandon Cronenberg’s follow up to 2012’s Antiviral is a sci-fi horror thriller which sees a convert corporation develop tech that allows agents to inhabit other people’s bodies and carry out assassinations. Andrea Riseborough stars as the star operative who finds herself getting lost in one of her quarries, while Jennifer Jason Leigh is her handle. Possessor already played the festival circuit and was scheduled for a UK theatrical release at the end of November until a second lockdown was announced. Now the movie will be released on UK Digital Platforms.

The annual migration north for winter is about to begin, and one of the first stops is a little beach town in WA called Kalbarri. Don’t be fooled though, this little town is full to the brim with adventure and you might find it hard to fit it all in in just a couple of days.
Kalbarri is an all seasons kind of place, although summer can get very hot, with temperatures increasing as you descend into the gorges.
There’s a bit of something here for everyone, so here’s a quick guide to seeing the best of Kalbarri.
The gorges in Kalbarri are just one of the spots you should see.
1. The Pink Lake
Heading north, at Northhampton head toward the coast, taking the scenic route through Horrocks and Port Gregory. Both are small sleepy villages dotted with beach shacks. You will find a stunning reef just off the shore at both towns. Hutt Lagoon is just inland from Port Gregory and you can’t miss it, the unnatural looking pink is hard to miss.
The hues of pink you will see depend on the Dunaliella Salina algae blooms and the different angles of sunlight throughout the day. Mine service roads separate the lagoon into different sections, each section has it’s own variety of pink. Head over to the eastern side, where you will be able to walk out on these built up roads for a better view.
The pink-hued Hutt Lagoon is a must see.
2. The cliffs of Kalbarri National Park
On the way into Kalbarri be sure to check out the abrupt coastal cliffs of the National Park. Similarities can be drawn between these cliffs and those at the Twelve Apostles when you’re looking out at Island Rock. You will need a pass to get into the National Park, which can be purchased from the Visitor Centre.
The colours are like layers in a multicoloured birthday cake, and at The Grandstand it seems like crumbling steps into the deep blue sea. The cliffs are a magic place to see the sunset.
Check out the sunset from the cliffs of Kalbarri.
3. Eagle Gorge
Take the time to walk down to the beach and be surrounded by the rusty layered rock walls that stand high above the sea. To the left-hand side of the beach, you’ll find a few little rock pools to cool off in.
Take a dip in the rock pools at Eagle Gorge.
4. Snorkelling at Blue Holes
This small marine sanctuary zone offers a protected area to get up close and personal with some fishy friends. It’s best getting here early before the wind picks up and effects the visibility. You’ll see octopus, a variety of parrot fish, crays hiding under ledges and cute little angel and clownfish.
Hire a boat or kayak and enjoy the water at Chinamans Beach.
5. Chinamans Beach
When the wind picks up you’ll find shelter and calm waters at Chinamans Beach near the entrance to the Murchison River mouth. Just nearby you can hire boats, kayaks and stand up paddle boards to really make a day of it out on the water.
Nature’s window is a must-see and one of the park’s most famous spots.
6. Nature’s Window
This is one of Kalbarri’s biggest attractions. Just 500m metres from the carpark you will see this perfect picture frame that encompasses a stunning view down into the gorge. Throughout the day the colours here change rapidly with the brightest reds lit up at sunrise and sunset.
For a great view of the park, don’t miss the Z-bend lookout.
7. Z Bend Hike & River Walk
Temperatures can reach 50° down in the gorge and the hike down is short but not easy. The Z-Bend lookout offers one of the loveliest views of Kalbarri National Park and is only 600m from the car park, and then down into the gorge is another 1.6km.
The hike down is somewhat of a clamber, down ladders and between huge boulders, before you reach the water’s edge. If you’ll willing to put in a bit more time and effort it is worth a rock hop down the gorge toward the left. Here you will most likely find a place to cool off in a larger pool of water with some overly friendly perch.
Be sure to take enough water on these hikes, wear a shoes and loose clothing. Know the signs of heat stress and act in a timely manner, prevention is better than cure.
You’ll have to climb down ladders on this hike to reach the gorge.
8. Wildflower season
July to October is when Kalbarri National Park becomes flushed with the colour of wildflowers. Some flowers are particularly special to the area and draw big crowds. The best places to see some of these colourful blooms are at the top of the cliffs near the gorges.
Rock hop and cool off in the water.
Where to camp
Unfortunately, there are only a few rest stops out on the highway that allow you to free camp a night or two. There are about five caravan parks in town all offering similar facilities for similar prices. The Murchison Caravan Park, however, offers the best outlook in the heart of town and close to all activities.
What’s your favourite national park in Western Australia?

Fandom Fic Rec Days
Thank you to all fanfic authors whose skill & creativity has floored me since middle school, and who continue to share their beautiful work with the rest of us just for the sake of sharing it. You never get as much recognition as you deserve.
Unfortunately, I used to have a very bad habit of forgetting to bookmark fics and losing them forever. Here are the ones I managed to keep. Some fics are old enough that I’m not sure the author even uses the account anymore, but I’m going to post them anyway. Have fun with my rare pairs.
HAT FILMS:
Title: boundless as the sea (11k words)
Author: ghostofgatsby
Ships: troffy, shatsome
Summary:  Trott drums his fingers on his desk, thinking hard. It had been a few days since he and Smith had talked, and something had occurred to him. He and Smith had been together a long time, but they weren’t bonded in some sort of magical way. It wasn’t until Ross and Sips came around that the idea of magical bonds had come up. The kelpie could use some closure, some grounding, especially as unhinged as they all felt. Something to bind them together would make their court stronger. To bind Smith to him and him to Smith, he’s doing it his own way. And that means selkie magic.
Notes: One of the stories that hooked me into UMY. Beautifully written. Emotionally intense in the best way. The devotion and trust between Trott & Smith rings from every word of this fic, and I adore it.
**
Title: Hot Whisky Eyes (5.8K words)
Author: Roehrborn
Ships: troffy, hatsome
Summary:  Time and time again, Ross has imagined the unthinkable: his two best friends, naked and wrapped in each other’s embrace. ~IRL Hatsome AU
Notes: For all your (consensual) voyeurism needs with an angst/pining appetizer. Very good smut. I can’t even tell you how many times I’ve read this.
**
Title: Spring (3k words)
Author: leonandon
Ships: hatsome
Summary:  Breezes through windows, staying too long in bed, quiet intimacy and love, lazy morning sex.
Notes: I’m going to try very hard to not put the word “lovely” in every sentence here. Gently slips you into an established, comfortable relationship and it feels so, so nice. Soft and easy and intimate and everything I wanted; a go-to.
**
Title: Boys of Summer (31k words)
Author: threeplusfire
Ships: hatsome, shatsome
Summary:  “I’ll send the car on Wednesday morning to take you to the airport,” Sips said, in the decisive tone of someone very used to getting what he wanted. - The unexpected trip out of town seems like a perfect chance to escape the sweltering summer heat. But not everyone can relax, even in paradise.
Notes: First off, there is a lot of sex and the sex is excellent, high-quality. But, this fic is also (or mainly, rather?) a beautifully complex exploration of character dynamics: Trott’s relationship with Smith & Ross, how best to integrate Sips into their personal lives, and how best to separate all of this from their professional ones. Fantastic AU; stunning fic.
**
Title: Putting the D in Teamwork (5.6k words)
Author: SummerAtLast
Ships: hatsome
Summary:  “Trott.” Ross fixed Trott with his saddest puppy eyes. “Don’t leave me hanging, mate.” “Trott,” whined Smith. “Don’t leave me out.” “Really now, gents,” said Trott. “Teamwork. I can do you both at once.”
Notes: As a heads-up, this fic has the boys as their Minecraft skins, so I guess keep that in mind if you’re put off by non-human dicks. That said, I honestly thought I would be, but I ended up loving this fic a lot. It’s equal parts good smut and funny/filthy banter that feels very correct for the three of them.
**
Title: Gives Me the Greatest Peace I’ve Ever Known (4.8k words)
Author: leonandon
Ships: troffy, hatsome
Summary:  Smith's way of dealing with things tends to involve running around in the middle of nowhere for a few days. Trott and Ross have never gone along, but this time Trott asks if he can join. Surprisingly, Smith agrees.
Notes: An absolutely gorgeous fic with ace!Smith, which was really exciting for me to find. I love the wilderness setting and the descriptions -- the space. The quiet, the easy affection, and being mindful of boundaries. Another one I’ve read over and over again.
**
Title: what’s done in the dark will be brought to the light (8.8k words)
Author: vosiferous
Ships: troffy, hatsome
Summary: There is a rattlesnake of a man, one with a soft smile, a gaze that slices through souls, and a tongue that rattles lies like saliva. His blood is poison and his laugh are razorblades. He is a collector of fine artifacts, and he sees value in all things. If you are not careful, he will see the value in you.
Notes: This one is technically unfinished, but each of the 3 chapters are pretty much stand-alone drabbles. Dark and gorgeous UMY stories. The writing has a magic and other-worldliness to it that’s perfect for UMY and makes this a fantastic read. Heed the warnings.
**
Title: Layout (2.8k words)
Author: threeplusfire
Ships: alsipsy
Summary: Lots of comfort, pretty boys and sports. An AU about gymnast!Smith.
Notes: I just have a huge weakness for basically everything in this fic. Takeout, TV, massages. Toys. Sips taking care of Smith in the gym and out. A total feel-good fic. Relaxing and lovely to read. Yet another go-to.
MISCELLANEOUS:
Title: Not Such A Bad Way (5.6k words)
Author: _angelicorn_
Ships: Blue Beetle/Booster Gold (DC Comics)
Summary: (My own, since the author didn’t provide one) Ted makes some upgrades to the Bug, so he and Booster take it for a test-drive. After a disastrous engine failure, they end up stranded in space with no heat and help (in the form of Guy Gardner) hours away.
Notes: More of my weaknesses. Huddling for warmth. Awkward sex. Best friends’ first time together -- slow & experimental. ANGST. I cry every time, but I promise it all turns out okay. I will love this fic always and forever because it’s such a perfect representation of these dumb men and their beautiful friendship.
**
Title: The Policeman Officer’s Seduction (852 words)
Author: kyuuketsukirui
Ships: Nicholas Angel/Danny Butterman (Hot Fuzz)
Summary:  You ask someone back to yours after a night at the pub, that's pretty cliched, isn't it? And what could be more romantic than Point Break? But Nicholas just doesn't seem to get it.
Notes: Another best friends’ first time fic but this one is just cute and funny. Danny’s POV is perfect. If you don’t think this is exactly what happened after the movie, I don’t know what to tell you.
**
Title: Happy Beginnings (2.7k words)
Author: ennui_blue_lite
Ships: Control/Tony (A Bit of Fry and Laurie)
Summary: Control has something important to tell Tony. Sometimes, actions speak louder than words.
Notes: So, my friend and I were kind of in love with the ABoFaL skits featuring Control & Tony Murchison -- spies for the British Intelligence agency. We decided as a joke to look for fic, but it just so happened that one of the only people on the planet who wrote Control/Tony fic was also really, alarmingly good at it. I can’t read this without smiling. If you have no idea what I’m talking about here, you can still read this fic, but you will have many questions about it and probably also about me. (You can watch one of the skits -> here <- if it helps.)
**
Title: None So Blind (25k words)
Author: Brianna Falken
Ships: Mirror!Spock/Mirror!Kirk (Star Trek TOS)
Summary: Spock convinces a blinded Kirk to allow him to create a mental link between them while they are stranded on an uninhabited planet after the shuttle crashes.
Notes: This fic was originally published in a zine in 1997, which I think is very cool, and it’s my favorite Mirrorverse story ever. About learning to trust and lowering guards, even when distrust and distance were all that kept them alive before. Intimate & vulnerable. Even if you’re like me and usually avoid the Mirrorverse, this fic is a lot less dark than most (but still kind of dark, so be safe) and a really good read.
**
Title: Lay Down Your Burdens (8.3k words)
Author: autotunedd
Ships: Choi Seunghyun/John Lee (RPF)
Summary: Tohn vignettes
Notes: Another instance where a friend and I looked for a weird pairing as a joke, but then the fic was so good that the joke was on us. This is Korean rapper T.O.P (of Big Bang) with John Lee, the director of a movie T.O.P starred in called 71: Into the Fire. There’s no brief way to explain why this pairing exists, so I will just say that this fic ruined me. It is so striking, quiet, and achingly beautiful that I was desperate for more tohn but there really just isn’t any. Even if you have no idea who these people are, I can guarantee you will find this fic incredible. I think you have to make an account, but it’s worth it, ok? It’s worth it.
**
Title: The Cusp and the Fjords We Wade Through (9.6k words)
Author: almadeamla
Ships: Rick Grimes/Shane Walsh (The Walking Dead)
Summary:  Written for the twd_kinkmeme prompt: Rick and Shane had a thing before Rick met Lori.
Notes: Such vivid imagery in this. Matter-of-fact writing style that leaves so much unsaid but clearly understood (shows; hardly ever just tells -- mirrors the natures of characters perfectly). I love the tone of this fic to death. Bittersweet. Aches. So good that I sometimes forget it didn’t happen in the show (and other times I choose to forget). My perceptions of the characters were irrevocably changed. For me, this is the story of Rick and Shane.
This is by no means a complete list; I messed up and had to put this together just today. I’ve read so many excellent fics, but some of them were awhile ago. I didn’t have enough time to read through again and do them the justice they deserve in my notes. So, these are the fics I’ve read enough times that I’ll remember them forever.
Thank you again, fic authors -- our often unsung heroes.

Bobby Morrow, Who Ran to Stardom at the 1956 Olympics, Dies at 84
Bobby Morrow, who sprinted to three gold medals at the 1956 Summer Olympics in Melbourne, Australia, dominating his competition as only Jesse Owens had done at the Berlin Games in 1936, died on Saturday at his home in Harlingen, Tex. He was 84.
His partner, Judy Parker, said that the cause was not known but that he had received diagnoses of anemia and neuropathy.
By the time Morrow arrived in Melbourne in November 1956, he had harnessed his speed — which he had honed chasing jackrabbits on his father’s farm in Texas — to a preternatural ability to stay calm.
“Whatever success I have had is due to being so perfectly relaxed that I can feel my jaw muscles wiggle,” he was quoted as saying by David Wallechinsky in “The Complete Book of the Olympics” (1984).
Morrow’s races took place over a week on the track at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. First he won the 100-meter sprint in 10.5 seconds, a time slowed by a headwind. (In two early heats, he had tied the Olympic record of 10.3 seconds.)
Then, in the 200-meter final, he won the gold in 20.6 seconds, matching the world record.
“Ever since I started sprinting, I wanted to duplicate the great Jesse Owens and win two Olympic championships,” Morrow said, after he had won the 100 and 200-meter races.
But he had one more race to match Owens’s 1936 feat: the 4×100-meter relay. Running the final leg after his teammates Ira Murchison, Leamon King and Thane Baker, Morrow extended the lead they had given him over the Soviet Union. Their winning time of 39.95 seconds broke the world record set by Owens, Ralph Metcalfe, Foy Draper and Frank Wykoff in 1936.
Morrow became the only Olympic runner to win the two sprints and the relay since Owens (who also won a fourth medal, in the long jump, in 1936). Only Carl Lewis, in 1984, and Usain Bolt, in 2012 and 2016, have equaled that accomplishment.
“He was a great runner, an extraordinary athlete,” Mr. Wallechinsky said of Morrow in an interview. “And he was also the last white sprinter from the United States to win the Olympic sprints.”
Morrow’s success in Melbourne propelled him into a year of national fame. He was on the covers of Life, Sport and Sports Illustrated, which named him its Sportsman of the Year. He visited the White House, appeared on “The Ed Sullivan Show” and received the James A. Sullivan Award in 1957 as the outstanding amateur athlete in the United States.
He had hoped to defend his titles at the 1960 Summer Olympics in Rome. But, to his frustration, he never got there.
Bobby Joe Morrow was born on Oct. 15, 1935, in San Benito, in southern Texas, and grew up on a farm nearby, outside Rangerville, where his father, Bob Floyd, raised cotton and carrots. His mother, Mattie Lucille (Danley) Morrow, was a homemaker.
Morrow’s brilliance as a high school runner attracted college recruiters from around the country. But he chose to stay in Texas, at Abilene Christian College (now a university), and became its star sprinter.
“Bobby had a fluidity of motion like nothing I’d ever seen,” Oliver Jackson, the track coach at Abilene Christian, told Sports Illustrated in 2000. “He could run a 220 with a root beer float on his head and never spill a drop.”
In 1956, Morrow won the 100- and 200-meter races at the N.C.A.A. track and field championships. He earned his trip to Melbourne with victories at the same distances during the United States Olympic trials.
He wanted to compete at the 1960 Olympics, even though he was becoming disillusioned with the way amateur athletics were run, at a time before Olympic athletes could earn millions of dollars.
He had to donate the $250 in prize money he won from appearing on the television game show “To Tell the Truth” to Abilene Christian. He also had to cash in plane tickets to track meets and drive instead so he had money to eat, and to refuse $500 a month for a State Department trip to South America because taking the money would have made him a professional. He went anyway, at his own expense.
He failed to qualify for the 1960 United States track and field team during the Olympic trials. But he was told he could train with the team in the hope of going to Rome as a reserve.
On the night before the team left for Europe, he was told to come the next day to Los Angeles International Airport, where he would be told his fate. “So I met them out there and they said, ‘No, you’re not going,’” he told The Guardian in 2016. He was crestfallen.
The United States team did not win gold medals in any of the three events in which Morrow had won them four years earlier. The 4×100 relay team was disqualified because of an illegal baton exchange between Ray Norton and Frank Budd.
In addition to Ms. Parker, Morrow is survived by two daughters, Vicki Watson and Elizabeth Kelton; a son, Ron; two stepdaughters, Alisa Matz and Lynn Zanca; and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren. His marriages to Jo Ann Strickland and Judy Bolus ended in divorce.
After missing out on competing in Rome, Morrow was, among other things, an insurance broker, a clothing store owner and a farmer. He returned briefly to prominence in track when he testified to the Senate Commerce Committee in 1965 that the governance of amateur athletics poorly served athletes and did not build the best possible Olympic teams.
But he faded from the track world, often forgotten when great sprinters were remembered.
“I don’t get mentioned,” he told The Guardian. “I get left out a lot. And I think that’s because I was fighting them so much.”

Foto: World Athletics Read the full article
