Walkabout is both provocative and provoking. It stimulates thoughts about humankind's relationship to nature, about the fragility and even perniciousness of civilization, and about what happens to everyone as they grow up and learn to "fit in" to societal expectations. It's a film in which brutality jostles beauty. But it's as provoking, as annoying in its way, as a 3-year-old's constantly questioning "Why?" You start out trying to answer, but eventually realize that there's no end to the game. Nicolas Roeg has so loaded the familiar tale of the clash of civilization and the primitive with images and narrative incidentals that defy explanation. We begin with trying to understand the film's initial shock, in which the Father drives his children into the desert for a picnic and then tries to kill them before setting fire to the auto and turning the gun on himself. We want to know what brought him to such a terrible moment, but Roeg has no interest in giving us an answer. We want to know why the Girl so stoically accepts this horror, in the face of which most children would break down. Later in the film, we want to explain interpolated scenes like the one of the scientific crew in the outback -- what are they doing, and why is the one female in the crew so provocatively sexy? And the ending, in which we see the now-grown and -married Girl preparing dinner for her husband, who is crowing about his job advancement, juxtaposed with a scene of the three children playing naked in a pond, has a heavy-handed voiceover quoting A.E. Housman's A Shropshire Lad: Into my heart on air that kills From yon far country blows: What are those blue remembered hills, What spires, what farms are those? That is the land of lost content, I see it shining plain, The happy highways where I went And cannot come again. It feels oddly false and sentimental, an evocation of something untrue to the events shown in the film.  Does Roeg intend this ironic jolt, this disjunction of reality and sentiment? If so, he does little to prepare us for it. It's a fascinating film, but it feels incoherent.

Pairing: Gibbs x F!Reader

Warning:  Just some sweet Christmas Fluff.

Summary:  Gibbs deciding he can’t wait to find some mistletoe.

“No I’m not having it, not one bit, just no”

“Tony just let it go, it was a hypothetical question anyway”

“But you have just if you had to kiss a member of this team under the mistletoe, I would not be your first choice”

“Tony don’t take it personally, your just not my type”

“So, are you saying you would pick McGee before me?”

“Yes, I would pick McGee before you Tony”

You could see smiles starting to spread across the faces of the rest of the team as they enjoyed you winding up Tony Dinozzo.  And how better to wind him up than to question his whole belief that all women wanted a bit of him.  It was a rare thing to have all of you in the bar together, but you had just finished a hard case early and it was nearly Christmas, so you had all decided it was a great idea to go to the bar.  

“So, I would be your next choice”

“No, I have a few other members of the team I would consider first”

“Really Kat, who?”

“Well, I would be very happy to meet Dr Mallard under the mistletoe”

“As would I you my dear Kat”

“So, I would be after Ducky and McGee?”

“And Palmer”

“Oh, come on you are killing me here”

“What about me Kat, feeling left out here”

“Abs, it goes without saying, it would be hot”

You watched and smiled as the guy’s jaws dropped and Abby and you couldn’t control your laughter as you clinked your glasses together.

“Have I ever told you Kat you are not funny”

“Many times, Tony”

“I know who I would beat in the list, what about Gibbs?”

“What about me Tony?”

Looking up from your drink you saw Gibbs standing in front of the table.  You were surprised he had actually turned up; he had even changed into a black button down and jeans which made him look even hotter than usual.

“Nothing boss, just talking about kissing people under the mistletoe and Kat trying to deny that I would top of her list”

“Told you Tony, contrary to what you may believe not every woman wants to fall at Antony Dinozzo’s feet”

“Fine Kat, your loss there are plenty ladies in this bar just waiting for a little Dinozzo magic”

“I will just have to try and live with it Tony”

Pushing Tony playfully out of the way you headed to the bar to get another round for the table.  Taking a deep breath, you took you place at the bar next to Gibbs.

“Good to see you boss, didn’t think we would be able to lure you away from your basement to join us tonight”

“What and miss you winding Tony up over there”

“He brings it on himself, you know he does”

“So, Kat who would be top of your list”

“What….”

“Who do you want to kiss under the mistletoe?”

Your eyes met his, seeing a mischievous twinkle and a playful smile.  Oh my god was Gibbs actually flirting with you, this was new and could also be really fun. You couldn’t deny it you had always found Gibbs attractive and tonight he looked so good.  Feeling suddenly brave you leaned over Gibbs and lifted the glass of bourbon from in front of him.  Downing his drink you placed your hand on his shoulder and whispered in his ear.

“Find some mistletoe and you will find out?”

With more confidence than you were feeling inside you lifted the drinks for team and heading back to the table, swing your hips provocatively as you did, feeling Gibbs eyes following you.

Dropping the drinks on the table you slid back into the booth next to Ducky.

“Now what could have brought that smile to your face, my dear?”

“Nothing just getting into the festive spirt”

“Nothing to do with a certain Leroy Jethro Gibbs then”

‘Don’t know what you are talking about Dr Mallard”

“Really Kat, I have seen the way that the two of you look at each other”

Before you could reply you felt a hand on your arm, as you turned Gibbs pulled you out of your seat so you were standing in front of him.  Then without a word he cupped your face and kissed you, the kiss was deep and passionate and almost took your breath away.

“You don’t have any mistletoe Gibbs”

“Nope, didn’t think I could wait to go find any” “Maybe we should try that again when you do find some”

“Let’s just forget the mistletoe”

Pulling you into his arms he kissed you again, capturing your lips and parting them with his tongue. Somewhere in the background you were sure you heard Ducky say,

“About time”
