Wild Burgundy Escargot (shared), Roasted Chicken. Brasserie by Niche. St. Louis, Missouri. 11.17.2023.
NOTE TO SELF: I feel like I mostly just drank butter. Because I used bread to sop up all of that butter in the escargot dish, and look at that bread sitting soaking up the jus beside the chicken. I should have ordered a side or a salad to go with this. The chicken was good, but the escargot bites were the best. Come back, but order a different entree.

Brasserie Lebanese Restaurant
We were supposed to have Turkish for dinner, but apparently the shop was closed for decoration/renovation, so after hunting about, we chanced upon a Lebanese restaurant just up across the street, so we decided to try our luck there at Brasserie
Tumblr media
Location: Within Stanmore, just a few blocks away from our apartment
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Setting: A nice Lebanese feel to it, with a verandah outside to smoke bong, though they kinda have this annoying song playing in a loop
Tumblr media
Their bottled water, or stilled water as they call it in London
Tumblr media
Some kind of meat snack wrapped in edible leaves
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Lebanese bread with the humus to go with it
Tumblr media
Lebanese currypuffs, apparently
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Chicken chunks with Lebanese bread and salad
Tumblr media
Beef chop or lamb chop, I think? I can't remember
Tumblr media
Lamb cutlets
Tumblr media
Chicken wings with rice and salad
Tumblr media
Ocra stew with rice
Tumblr media
Another kind of veggie stew with rice, though I can't recall what veggies is it
Tumblr media
Fries for the kids
Tumblr media
One of the many Lebanese desserts, which is almost like a flaky spring roll, but sweet
It was a very filling meal, though my ocra stew could use a little bit of crunch into it. It's made into stew so much that went I bite into the ocra (which is one of my fav vegs btw), it just went splat in my mouth and the slight gooey crunch to it was not there. But still, it's a nice taste to it. Never thought that ocra could be made into stew.
The only off-putting part would be the song that they played in a constant loop somehow, but it was no big. The atmosphere was pretty relaxing, and you just feel like you wanna lay back and relax, and watching the people smoking their bong at the verandah outside the dining area was also an interesting experience

Pardon My French Manila Launches New Asian-Pasti Lunch Buffet
Tumblr media
There's a great new lunch destination for those working or living near the Makati area. While the evenings at Pardon My French Manila are usually busy and packed, not so many people know that the restaurant also offers a relaxing venue for a classy business lunch or casual get-together with friends. That's why I'm here to discover their new exquisite lunch buffet for myself.
Tumblr media
Pardon My French is located along Jupiter Street in Makati, right where the iconic Strumm's used to be. It continues to be a popular music hotspot where guests can enjoy live bands and dance to the beat of classic songs after sundown. This time, we were here for lunch to try their newest offering, the Asian-Pasti Buffet which promises to be an exciting option featuring familiar Asian favorites served with a French twist.
Tumblr media
Pardon My French Manila made big waves when it opened its doors in 2022, instantly becoming a lively party place for those with a more refined taste for food and music.
Tumblr media
The central dining hall is where live performers and bands come to play in the evenings. But for today, the Hungry Kat was invited to see the more relaxed version of the restaurant during its lunch service.
Tumblr media
The entire place exudes a fanciful charm that you don't often see in other restaurants along this side of Makati. This is a great venue to invite family and friends for a lovely afternoon filled with excellent food and drinks.
Tumblr media
There's also a balcony floor overlooking the party venue below if you want to enjoy lunch in a more private dining area.
Tumblr media
Taking the helm at the kitchen is the legendary Chef Ariel Manuel who is more popularly known as the man behind the beloved Lolo Dad's, arguably the best fine dining restaurant in the country during its time. While I was not able to visit the original Lolo Dad's in Malate, my first experience with Chef Ariel's restaurant was when we dined at Lolo Dad's Brasserie in Ayala Center, Makati. It seemed that everyone at the table had their own memorable experience at Lolo Dad's.
Tumblr media
Fortunately, the bar is open as early as lunch, so guests can order any of their refreshing beverages. We tried their Cocktail of the Week called the Yellow Room (P380) which was inspired by Johannes Vermeer's "The Girl With a Wine Glass." It offers a refreshing afternoon cocktail composed of gin, mango and calamansi corsial, white wine reduction, and prosecco with tropical citrus notes. They also have Signature and Classic Cocktails, as well as other beverages such as the Strawberry Lemon Basil (P280).
Tumblr media
The all-new Asian-Pasti Buffet is an endless array of Asian-inspired small bites, dips, spreads, breads, and canapes available from 11:00am to 3:00pm on Tuesdays to Saturdays for only P990+ per person. Unlike other hotel buffets which can be a bit heavy on the meats and fatty dishes, the Asian-Pasti buffet at Pardon My French offers a lighter and healthier selection so you can still go back to your office without falling asleep.
Tumblr media
You can start at the salad station which comes with several composed salads like the Duck Salad, Banana Heart Salad, Spiced Fish Tofu Salad, Beef and Glass Noodles Salad. You can also make your own salad with all the ingredients spread out on the buffet table, then add your chosen salad dressings from lime vinaigrette, sesame vinaigrette, Thai basil raspberry dressing, or peanut dressing.
Tumblr media
There are also several other enticing small bites and canapes available like these Marinated Fish and Shellfish Platters. Try some of the Soy Cured Salmon, Tuna Kilawin, Brined Mussles, and the Marinated Squid with Shrimp. There's also a Barbecued Pork platter which features this lovely Cantonese specialty.
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
One of my favorite dishes that afternoon was the Scallops XO with its soft scallops topped with a very flavorful XO sauce served on the half shell. I immediately went back here to get a few more servings.
Tumblr media
There's also a Sushi Board offering some small sushi bites including Maki, California Rolls, and these Oshizushi or pressed sushi topped with fish.
Tumblr media
Don't forget to grab some of these Shrimp Cocktail served on shot glasses with sweet chili sauce. If you like noodles, there's some Cold Soba with sauce and condiments here as well.
Tumblr media
Over at the other table, guests can treat themselves to some meatier dishes featuring Asian barbeque and dimsum.
Tumblr media
These Assorted Dimsum baskets come with homemade shrimp, pork, and mushroom dumplings. Try to get at least one of each then dip them in the chili sauce provided. Just beside these are Deep Fried Mantou Buns with condensed milk, pork humba jam and spiced chicken liver dips.
Tumblr media
Meatlovers won't feel left out because there's a lot of choices here like the Beef Sate, Chicken Sate, Roasted Pork Belly, Charcuterie Quiche, plus all the Crispy Pork Chicharon that you can handle.
Tumblr media
The centerpiece of the Asian-Pasti Buffet is definitely the Roast Pekin Duck served with hoisin sauce, condiments, and wrappers. Get a few pieces of this ultra crispy American Pekin duck and put it inside the pancake wrappers together with the vegetables and sauces for the complete Pekin Duck experience.
Tumblr media
The buffet also comes with your choice of soup. You can ask for the very interesting Cream of Lettuce Soup or go for the Tom Yum Soup. Both are quite good and served very hot. All of these are included in the Asian-Pasti buffet.
Tumblr media
However, for just a little more, you can actually go for their Special Lunch Deal for only P1200+. This option comes with the lavish Asian-Pasti buffet plus a tempting Entree of your choice and their Dessert of the Day. You can choose from four different entrees like the Szechuan Pork with Stir Fried Saffron Rice.
Tumblr media
My order was the Salmon with Teriyaki Glaze served with Fried Vegetable Ravioli. The tender salmon was doused in a sweet and tangy teriyaki glaze that I really liked.
Tumblr media
Other options for your entree are the Spiced Curried Chicken with Potatoes and Pappadum and the Braised Beef and Tendon with Garlic Pasta. Everyone really enjoyed their main course even if we were all pretty full from the Asian-Pasti selections.
Tumblr media
We ended our beautiful buffet lunch with their Dessert of the Day which was the Mango Panna Cotta with Coconut Milk and Tapioca. This was a sweet and lovely way to finish our extended lunch session.
Tumblr media
We would like to thank Chef Ariel Manuel and Chinkee Koppe for hosting our fabulous lunch at Pardon My French Manila. This is one of the best hidden gems in Makati for lunch so make sure to check out their Asian-Pasti Buffet before everyone else finds out.

Sunday 9 August 1998 - prebreakfast TV - ride to Forch - Röstipizza for lunch - ride down the roller slide and the funny elk-light fixtures - train ride home and a ham focaccia for supper
Sunday 9 August 1998
Hi everyone, Hope your week is going well. It is supposed to be cooled down by today. Twenty years ago today I did a quick country train and bus ride around Zürich, after a long day in Zürich itself. Eventually I went back home to München.
Overview
watching Ottifanten and an Otto Waalkes sketch comedy show on TV
shower and breakfast in hotel
check out, walk to Rümlang S Bahn station, lock clothes bag in locker
take S Bahn to Stadelhofen, then S-18 to Esslingen via Forch
take bus from Forch to Uster, and S-Bahn from Uster to Zürich HB
lunch at the Brasserie Johanniter
S-10 train to Üetliberg, walk up to see the Uto Kulm observation area
train to Zürich Selnau, walk back to HB
take train with Sommer Spezial ticket to München Hbf
head home with U-5, U-4 and bus 37 home
arrive home and no one complains (thankfully)
make it to work for the final week And that was the summary of what I did on Sunday, 9th August 1998.
That was some noisy night last night, I am lucky to be back in my comfortable room with no roommates to have to listen to (loud music, snoring and so on), and I have my own TV set.
Breakfast was served until 10 AM at the hotel, so I watched a little TV before going. Since I am still such a big fan of Otto Waalkes since July 1991, I watched an episode of Ottifanten, which are anthropomorphic elephants, the main character voiced by Otto Waalkes himself. Then there was the live action sketch comedy show, with his "English for runaways" inexact English-to-German translations, plus the Kakao sketch.
After seeing Otto on TV, I took a shower, then had breakfast. The breakfast was better than at the hostel, the items were more delicious and the bread rolls were fresh. Well worth the extra 10 CHF I paid. After that I checked out with my clothes bag, and I took my day bag with the remaining sodas for the swig bottle. It was a twenty minute walk to the Rümlang S-Bahn station. My ticket was still valid for Zürich and Rümlang until 12:30 PM but I wanted to out of that zone for the day. In that case, what is the appropriate ticket to buy for all zones of the Zürcher Verkehrsverbund (Zürich regional rail district)? More likely than not, it would be the 9 AM ticket available daily and for about 18 CHF for all zones, valid only up to the last train of the day, likely just after midnight.
From Rümlang, I took the S-Bahn via Glattbrugg and Oerlikon to Zürich HB, where for 6 CHF I could store the clothes bag away for the day until it would be time to take the train home. I had until 5:15 PM that day to explore the Zürich region. So I thought, why not take the S-18 all the way to Esslingen ZH? To do that, I had to take the S-Bahn from platforms 21 to 24 to Stadelhofen, and change to the S-18 at its own stop near the theater (which on 24 July was playing The Truman Show). In 1998 I did not know about the Tram museum at Burgwies, close to Balgrist, which would be open at 11 AM. That would have been interesting. I made it a point later to visit, and between September 2011 and December 2016 I have since visited twice. Going further, the S-18 ran on the same tracks as the tram line 15 up to Rehalp, and after that, it went on a surface route up to Zumikon-Waltikon and went underground for Zumikon and Maiacher, before coming out of tunnel for Forch. After Forch and up to Esslingen, the train route was mainly single tracked. The day was nice, mid 70s and had interesting scenery, not too hilly. At the end was Esslingen and I had to take a bus, line 842, through Mönchaltorf ZH to Uster. I had been to Uster on 4th of July 1997 but only by accident. That incident was due to the fact that I did not alight the S-Bahn train at Stettbach as I should have. But this time Uster seemed familiar and I knew where I needed to go and where to alight.
The S-Bahn from Uster to Zürich, goes northwest past the Greifensee.and Dübendorf, before it goes into tunnel at Stettbach and emerges at Stadelhofen. Then there is another tunnel section from there to Zürich HB which is platforms 21 to 24. I alighted at Zürich HB and it was time for lunch. I wanted to go back to my favorite restaurant at the time, the Brasserie Johanniter, on Niederdorferstrasse 70. They were not so full as the previous night and they offered me a table outside. I had a Hürlimann 1 Liter, and on the seasonal menu, they were serving Rösti as a pizza. I could order a "quattro stagione" (four seasons) pizza on a bed of the hashbrowns. It was actually quite delicious, too bad I did not take a photo of it. With a full liter of beer, you have to take at least an hour to enjoy it. I think it was about 2 PM that I paid the bill and left for Üetliberg.
In 1998, the SZU, Sihltal-Zürich-Üetlibergbahn used the same platforms as today, but instead of platforms 21 and 22, the platforms were called just 1 and 2 back then. I took the S-10 the entire distance to Üetliberg via Triemli. It was a four-zone journey and my 9 AM ticket covered it with no problem. When I arrived at Üetliberg terminus, I left the train, walked up the steep pedestrian trail to Uto Kulm, and for the first time I saw the most bizarre light fixtures around, namely the Bruno Weber Hirschlampen. These were four lights on the antlers of giant elk. Also there is some planetary display on the trail. The Uto Kulm resort hotel is at the top, and costs around 200 CHF per night, which I could not afford then. The observation platform and tower are still open to the public. From there you can see from north Zürich into the Albisgütli where there is the late summer Knabenschiessen event, and further along Lake Zürich towards Rapperswil SG and Pfäffikon SZ. I had to take about twenty minutes to get a good view of everything and appreciate the many years I had known Zürich (my first visit was 1976 when I was about four).
It was getting close to 4 PM and I had to go back to the rail station. I thought I would have some time to walk from Selnau to the station, it was not a long journey, and being Sunday, the traffic would be light. I arrived about 4:45 PM and searched for some place to buy Victorinox knives but I could only find cheap store-brand replicas. They would have to suffice. I managed to collect my clothes bag, get to the train to München Hbf and board the right train car, as stated on my Sommer-Spezial ticket. My seat was in an open area of the first class compartment and with a window all to myself. At 5.15 PM the train left Zürich HB, I left seeing the Zürich insurance billboard just outside the station, and away it went. I took a few photos here and there, particularly getting close to St. Gallen. There was a bistro wagon going through the cars, and I could not pass up the ham and cheese sandwich on a focaccia-shaped bread roll. The train reached Bregenz about 7:45 PM. That was the only time the border guards were on the train, and the rest of the way it was uneventful. I think I took a nap between Lindau and Buchloe. As you might expect, the electrification did not start until the train passed Geltendorf, which is kind of the imaginary border of Oberbayern and the Ostallgäu. The sky was getting darker and about 9:50 PM the train pulled into München Hbf. There was no point remaining in the station so I headed home, first on the U-5 to Lehel, and caught the U-4 to Arabellapark, then the bus 37 to my apartment in the Freischützstraße. I entered quietly and no one told me off about my alarm clock.
And the next morning? It would be the final week of my Werkstudenttätigkeit, so all loose ends had to be tightened up, and paperwork had to be filled out for end-of-project, and I had to also take care of my apartment rental and last three nights in Paris for Summer 1998 before flying home. And buying this and that. So the next story may not be until Wednesday the 15th August. The 18th August is the "grand finale" of this saga.
Hope you enjoyed so far, Gute Nacht and bonne nuit!
PS Desirée is afraid of the dark, especially when she's in a park… (that was one song I heard repeatedly in Summer 1998, she had "You gotta be" in 1994)

Common Mistakes to Avoid on Your Trip to France:
Suppose you can avoid the blunders that make you unpopular with the locals. In that case, France is a great vacation destination with its rich culture, delectable cuisine, different towns, breathtaking scenery, and fantastic shopping. Tour in France makes the moment you are sipping wine down the Champs-Elysees, and the next you are staring slack-jawed at the bill that would pay for an entire lunch back home. Here are some of the mistakes that you need to avoid on your trip to France which are mentioned below:
Drinking and feasting in traveler traps in France:
The cost of everything for tourists increases in tourist destinations like Paris, Bordeaux, and Nice, including hotels, food, and drink. A couple of drinks on a chic patio with a view of a busy boulevard should get the party started if you are trying to spend your money as quickly as possible. In light of this, be sure to dine and drink in locations less frequented by tourists to avoid paying exorbitant prices and to experience locales that are much more characteristic of the nation. In France, bread is torn rather than cut, so follow local customs and set the knife down.
Avoiding France's Public Transportation:
Use public transit as often as possible, which is usually cozy, practical, and reasonably priced in France. Buses are a terrific way to travel around cities without paying expensive cab charges, and metro systems are simple to operate.
Not Understanding the French Timetables:
You will need to adjust to it because the French follow a mainly European schedule and are different from the open 24-hour culture of the United States. For instance, only attempt to accomplish a little on a Sunday afternoon when everything closes. You can also anticipate that most cafes, restaurants, and grocery stores will be completed in the middle of the afternoon for a few hours. In some regions of France, the latter can make finding a spot to eat lunch between 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. extremely challenging. This advice is particularly relevant to rural areas of the nation because ignoring the opening times could result in you missing out on the only brasserie or boulangerie in town.
Saying Garcon to your French waiter:
You will need to call your server's attention, whether in a restaurant or a pub. Still, these seemingly unimportant exchanges often turn out to be the most embarrassing. Never refer to the waiter as Garcon, which literally means boy, and can sound condescending and mildly offensive. In restaurants and most other public settings, a courteous bonjour is the proper approach to get someone's attention.
Expecting France to Have a Fast Pace of Life:
You are about to encounter a culture that moves significantly slower if you are heading to France from the United States. Be calm, patient, and aware of the French manner. The French prefer to take their time and enjoy the present at restaurants and cafes. The norm for waitpersons is to keep their distance, let you fill your glasses, and usually never give you the check before you ask for it. Additionally, eating while on the run is not typical in France.
Only staying in Paris while visiting France:
Save time in Paris if you want to visit all of France. Yes, the city is a fantastic site to see, but many other places in the nation will make your trip even more memorable. Other famous towns include Bordeaux, regarded as France's premier gastronomic city, and Marseille, with its laid-back south of France culture and North African influences. You can paddle and swim in the stunning lakes and gorges of the Verdon Gorge, go trekking in the Massif Central region, and enjoy the beaches of the French Riviera.
Assuming Everyone in France Speaks English:
While many of the locals you encounter in France will be able to communicate with you in English, not all of them will be eager to do so. Some people may be reluctant to converse in English, so don't be offended if you have awkward French discussions. This leads them to their next point.
Unaware of French Customs upon Arrival:
You risk being denied admittance if you go to the restaurant in flip-flops, shorts, and a T-shirt. French people can be formal, and wearing appropriate is expected, especially in urban areas. Not dressing down is what we mean by not dressing up. Another odd tradition is that ice is not typically added to drinks in France, so don't be upset if your tenth Coke doesn't have any icy garnish. You might have luck if you request ice, but it is only sometimes possible.
Final thoughts:
You should read this France Travel Planner if you plan a vacation there. While planning the trip, you need to avoid common mistakes, and it can make your northern France group tours more memorable and enjoyable. The most significant sites to visit in France, and the ideal times to travel there, whether you need a visa or more are all covered in their France trip planner.

cheese fries restaurant
In France, steak frites, which translates "steak and fries" in English, may be a prolific dish throughout the country's brasseries. cheese fries restaurant While the sort of steak and sauce utilized in the preparation has changed over time and between countries, the quintessential French fry is an everlasting factor.
BUT WHY THE POPULARITY
So why are french-fried potatoes so popular? Certainly there are other side dishes that might pair well with a protein. While speculative, it's believed that french-fried potatoes first gained a following in Europe, popularized by dishes including the aforementioned steak frites and moules-frites. Subsequently, french-fried potatoes became fashionable American soldiers stationed overseas during war I. once they returned home, they sought their new favorite snack to no avail. At this point , however, America was witnessing the renaissance of the fashionable nutriment restaurant. Inexpensive to organize and with an already established clientele, White Castle began offering french-fried potatoes with their hamburgers. The rest, as they assert , is history.
The French fry's meteoric rise from a humble fish-substitute to the world's quintessential culinary accompaniment has been an extended time within the making. Thus, we encourage you to celebrate (and, of course, eat) the world's greatest and most venerated entremots .The Quora recipe took 3 days but mostly zero effort. The post was short on details, so I invented them as I went by . the primary thing I noticed was that they discolored while drying within the fridge. After frying, they recolored themselves but appeared to be the smallest amount crispy, and thus , most disappointing of the bunch. As I ate more and more of them however, it ended up that that they had the simplest , most potatoey flavor and satisfying crisp (as against the boom-in-your-face crunch of the opposite two). I felt like I could eat endless amounts of those guys, which made them the winner for meKenji’s fries take 2 days and are specified to be shoestring sized, so I followed his recipe to a tee. His came out more intact than Heston’s but still broken, I’m unsure how he managed to avoid the broken ones on a high heat boil, but i think that’s why his lead photo is merely of 12 intact french-fried potatoes . within the end, the recipe was about twice as involved as Heston’s, with vinegar and agitation needed, but looked and tasted better with more intact fries (marginally more intact).
The easiest thanks to make homemade french-fried potatoes - www.iamafoodblog.com Random Quora Dude’s Method
The Quora recipe took 3 days but mostly zero effort. I felt like I could eat endless amounts of those guys, which made them the winner on behalf of me .
Thinking that I could optimize on this recipe, i attempted condensing the method into one long day. By 10pm that night, I ended up with soggy fries that couldn’t hold a candle to their 3 day brethren. Something magical seems to happen on the third day.
Was this easier than simply throwing some Ore-Ida or McCains fries within the oven? No, but it had been far, much more satisfying, and I’m guessing either (or both) Steph or i will be able to be improving this recipe as time goes by, until at some point we’ll just effortlessly be ready to throw together a simple batch of french-fried potatoes which will rival the simplest french restaurants, or McDonalds.
