starter for @livsaeli at the nursing home —
Tumblr media
Midday, one of five crews that Rhett was currently running right now. It was this job that needed to get a check up. The foreman was inexperienced, which never boded well. So here Rhett was, making sure that all was well. There were a few rooms that needed to be redone and he was making his way down the hall when when of the elderly ladies stopped him. In something that was atypical of Rhett, he liked elderly people. They touched a very strangely soft part of him and when the gal — Doris — asked him to sit down and play a game of 42 as her partner, he looked around. To the foreman he turned, You know what you need to do, the calking looks like hell on that tub, I want it fixed. Ceiling fan is installed backwards, I don’t know how they managed to do that. Fix it. Rhett then sat down and smiled at Doris. “Alright, Doris, this who we’re playing against?” There were two other elderly ladies and they gave him big grins. “I should warn you ladies, we’re not gonna go easy on ya,” Rhett said with a nod and they giggled and started to compliment his hair. “Thanks, grew it myself.”

Sirius and Remus teaching at Hogwarts
- Lets pretend Sirius never went to Azkaban
- Sirius was the potions teacher
- Remus was the defence against the dark arts teacher
- Everytime they would walk past each other in the halls they would mutter each other’s last names.
- If a topic came up that they had different views on they would bicker on for HOURS!
- Sirius would always say Remus stole his potion ingredients
- And whenever something went wrong Remus would always blame Sirius
- The stupid hatred around these two professors was wild
- Students began to think that they where like an old married couple
- And from that day on almost all of Hogwarts shipped Sirius and Remus together (even some other teachers)
- A few gryffindor students came up with a poll for when they would get together
- Tons of students bet different days on when the two professors would announce their relationship or it was confirmed somehow
- And I mean TONS
- Every house joined in on the betting and even some of the teachers
- When Remus found out he immediately told Sirius
- And everytime they heard a student talking about it they would just smirk at each other
- But when it came to the end of the school year the students became inpatient and wondered why Sirius and Remus weren’t together yet
- So the gryffindor common room set up a secret date from them.
- A gryffindor boy spilt a potion in Remus’s class
- Remus calked Sirius for help cleaning it up because he didn’t know what type of potion it was
- While Remus has his back turned all the students snuck out
- One girl cast a spell to light some candles and set the mood
- When Sirius walked in and Remus turned around, Remus became very confused
- But then they both caught on
- The class where all watching from a nearby classroom
- Remus and Sirius blush a little
- And then then take care of the potion and go their seperate ways
- All the students are disappointed
- On the last day of the school year a young gryffindor boy walks up to Remus and Sirius at the last breakfast and ask
- “okay, how come you guys are not together yet?!?! Your perfect for each other! Can you not see that?? We have all been waiting all year for you guys just to announce it! Siriusly!”
- Remus and Sirius laugh
- ( Sirius hand was probably on Remus’s thigh behind the dinning tables most days and no one even noticed)
- Sirius just flashes a cheeky grin and replied with
- “we’ve been married for 5 years”
- And the whole school just goes silent
- How could they not have known this?!?
- But then everyone starts clapping and cheering
- And a young raven claw boy screams
-“IVE WON THE BET! IVE WON THE BET!”
- The school was like a zoo
- And from then on Remus and Sirius continued their amazing relationship and all the students shipped it because it’s canon

Working at Calke Abbey
Tumblr media
Calke Abbey is a Grade I listed country house near Ticknall, Derbyshire,  in the care of the charitable National Trust. The site was an Augustinian priory from the 12th century until its dissolution by Henry VIII. The present building, named Calke Abbey in 1808, was never actually an abbey, but is a Baroque mansion built between 1701 and 1704.The house was owned by the Harpur family for nearly 300 years until it was passed to the Trust in 1985 in lieu of death duties.
Today, the house is open to the public and many of its rooms are deliberately displayed in the state of decline in which the house was handed to the Trust.
Today you wil gathering source material from the grounds and the house to develop over the next two weeks.
Remember, your project is titled ORDER + CHAOS, and you should actively seek out areas to record this.  You will mostly see lots of chaos!
You need to bring:
Your little black drawing book
Drawing materials- biro, marker pen, pencil, pastel etc
camera or phone was storage fully charged
waterproof clothing/ umbrella
packed lunch or money
1. Drawing/ mixed media in A6 book- order + chaos
You now have an aged and distressed book.  Use the pages you have prepared in the studio to record observations at Calke Abbey.  Work directly over the elements you have added to the pages.  Use any media- pen, pencil, chalk etc.  Look at collections, piles of books, rotting fruit, peeling wallpaper, random objects, patterns and textures
2. Texture and decay- drawing and photography
Look for and record texture and decay inside and out.  Record through drawing, mark making and photography a range of interesting textures and surfaces in the garden and the the buildings that show neglect and weathering.  Look for weathered brick, dirty windows, cracks in plaster, peeling paint, wallpaper, wooden floorboards, paving stones, etc and record using rubbings, pencil, fine liner, watercolour or chalk.  Take photos too.
3.  A sense of place and narrative, inside and out- photography
Calke Abbey has a unique atmosphere; a country house and estate preserved in 20th-century decline, poised somewhere between gentle neglect and downright dereliction, telling the tale of an eccentric family who amassed a huge collection of hidden treasures.
Behind closed doors, a treasure trove of peeling décor, personal artefacts, and remnants of past generations all combine to create a rich, atmospheric sense of place.  There are vast collections of artifacts, presented in both an ordered and chaotic manner.
Using photography, try to capture this feeling.  It is a lot easier to photograph inside the Hall than draw, so use your camera to record the collections and quirky objects there and in the garden.
4.  Photographic compositions- black and white
Explore the gardens, grounds and outside of the house, looking for strong compositions, interesting lighting, texture and form etc.
The light levels in the house are very low, and you can’t use a tripod, so avoid the darker areas of the house.
You have just 12 shots- the idea is to look carefully and compose before you press the shutter!

Tumblr failed to post this yesterday so fingers crossed it’ll go through today...
———
So many neat things today. First part of the day was spent slowly walking from the Old Town to Charles Bridge, and then to Prague Castle and St Vitus Cathedral - of course stopping to take photos at every turn and every corner because it’s pretty much impossible not to. Prague Castle is supposed to be the largest ancient castle in the world but it didn’t seem like a castle at all - at least not like the Irish ones 🤓. It’s more like a complex with many buildings within it.
After a quick stop at the Lennon Wall, we made our way back to the Jewish Quarter to check out the cemetery and other buildings like a few synagogues and a ceremonial hall, all filled to the brim with facts and figures and a whole lot of history.
Tumblr media
The Old Jewish Cemetery dates back from the 15th century and has about 12,000 tombstones within it. In some spots there are 10-12 layers of bodies buried on top of each other with ~6 hand widths in between them, due to lack of space. As you can see from the picture, the tombstones are arranged in what appears to be a haphazard way - but I assume they would’ve had to be uprooted and ‘replanted’ with every new layer over the decades/centuries - not an easy task! A bit morbid in general but very cool (and sobering) to see.
Tumblr media
Last, we watched a ballet at the National Theatre tonight! Gorgeous exterior, gorgeous interior, and a semi-interesting performance (calked Timeless). The second section was super strange and more contemporary than ballet - according to my So You Think You Can Dance knowledge from years ago 😂 - and I like contemporary but I didn’t understand this at ALL. Ah well, we had great seats and the atmosphere was nice as well, so strange dancing aside, it was all good :) I’m also glad I packed a dress because people were definitely dressed up, although I felt a smidge self conscious wearing Birkenstock’s...hahahha 🤦🏻‍♀️. At least the sandal straps are sparkly black?!

(Norman North)
(Burghley)
(Herefordshire)

The week ahead
This week is the last for RADICAL although you can continue to work on it over the holiday.  There will be an assessment the first week back.  We anticipated that this work will be exhibited, but as such I am still waiting for confirmation if this we actually happen- I’ll keep you posted on this, but fingers crossed.
On THURSDAY we will be going on a visit to SUDBURY HALL, a National Trust property, which will be the inspiration for your second project in Part 2 of Art Foundation. This will run with our year 2 Extended Diploma students.  I have booked a coach, but we are a few seats short, so if you are able to make your own way there and back please let me know.  We anticipate leaving college at 9.15, arriving Sudbury around 9.45- 10.00, and we will leave at 2.00pm.  Please bring a packed lunch as there is limited catering, and like Calke Abbey, it is pricey.
There will be a meeting after lunch on Tuesday afternoon, where I will give you the brief to start reading through in advance of Thursday’s visit.  Expect to do lots of drawing, take photos and make lots of written notes.  The Hall is closed to the general public, we have made special arrangements, so you will be able to really get some great research.  We are going before the holiday so you can start to think how you would like to approach this 6 week project before officially starting in January.
UCAS- unless you pay before 9.15 am on Thursday, your UCAS will not be sent before Christmas.  If you are really still unsure what and where to apply for, you can wait until the first day after the holiday, but otherwise you MUST get it done before then.  Once you complete the form, I attach a reference, then it goes to the bottom of the pile in Student Services to be checked before sending.  You cannot send the form yourself.  It seems to be taking several days for this to happen, so although UCAS’ deadline in the 15th January, it will not get there if you leave it too late!  Friday next week is an inset day, and you cannot pay it in then.
You are back after Christmas on Wednesday 3rd January.
See you Tuesday, enjoy the snow!

Local History Cafe at Calke Abbey - Tuesday 4th June
The group made a trip to Staunton Harold Church, a National Trust property a mile away from Calke Abbey. Beckie and Moira gave a fascinating and detailed talk on the significance of the church and the Shirley family in the English Civil War. The group enjoyed visiting this unique church set in the lovely grounds of Staunton Harold Hall. Beckie went on to talk about the hall when it was a Leonard Cheshire Home and later a Sue Ryder Hospice and how she is hoping to have a display for Human Kind about this in the church later this year.

Well it’s Friday…so today I thought I would leave you with a nice slideshow of wonderful architectural details I found on my travels throughout the years. I begin with the ammonite lamp posts in Lyme Regis, Dorset…
As usual any extra information on the National Trust can be found here. More info can also be found on my Lyme Regis or Kenilworth Castle blogs. Also my interesting Stourhead blog.
Fun Fact: Ammonites are 400 – 60 million years old.  They are molluscs and belong to the same family as squid and octopus. They are wonderful index fossils…
