Eddie is thirteen years old when his parents finally given in and send him to the sleep away camp he's been begging to go to all year.

His mother is exhausted, juggling a needy Adriana and a newly mobile Sophia all by herself, trying to be kind whenever Eddie offers up his help.

But in the end, he knows he only gets to go to camp because his mom can't handle the three of them on her own. And, maybe, because his dad feels bad for being away so long.

Eddie isn't the type to complain anyway, and he's definitely not complaining if he gets to spend two weeks in the wilderness with a bunch of kids his age instead of stuck in his house trying to entertain two little girls.

So, he goes to camp, he makes a bunch of friends, he has the best thirteen days of his life. Then, he finds out about the end of camp party. Its nothing big, just a campfire, songs and smores, ghost stories and music. But, for the first time since their introduction day, the girl and boy halves of the camp will get to mingle.

And Tyler tells Eddie that Sarah really wants to kiss him.

He thinks he's seen Sarah once or twice. Thinks she's pretty with her two bumpy brown braids, and her freckles, and her big green eyes. Thinks he'd quite like to kiss her. Except, he's never kissed anyone before and, whilst there's every chance he'll never see her again after tomorrow, he doesn't think he could live with that embarrassment.

Its a boy called Evan, from one of the younger groups, who finds him down by the lake after lunch. He's got curly blond hair, crystal blue eyes, and a strawberry birthmark. Eddie doesn't know much about him, except that Tyler thinks he's really cool because he's broken his arm three times already. But he does know that Evan has a smile like the sun, and his laugh makes Eddie feel like he's listening to his favourite song.

So, when Evan asks if he's going to kiss Sarah at the party, he tells him the truth. Tells him that he hasn't kissed anyone but his mother, sisters, and his abuela.

Evan doesn't laugh at him, doesn't even brag that he's already had his first kiss despite being a few years younger. Just offers to help. And Eddie doesn't understand, at first, how Evan could possibly help him with this. What? He's going to ask Sarah to close her eyes and then they switch places? Yeah, not happening.

But then, Evan covers his hand and Eddie's heart beats a little harder and he breathes help me. He's not sure what he's asking for until Evan presses their lips together.

Its warm and soft and lasts for maybe five seconds at the most. Its the best first kiss he could ask for. It feels a little like salvation.

Eddie kisses Sarah at the end of the night, he tries not to think about the blue of Evan's eyes by the lake.

The next day, Eddie goes home. And, the Sunday after that, he goes back to the church and learns about sin between two men.

Eddie doesn't think about Evan after that.

In fact, Eddie is so good at not thinking about Evan that for the next twenty years of his life he's convinced that Sarah was his first kiss.

And its not a problem really. Because he doesn't really think about his first—second—kiss all that often anyway. Doesn't have reason to.

But then, Hen tells them about kissing the wrong Suarez and, suddenly, Eddie doesn't remember Sarah. He does, however, remember Evan.

He thinks he goes a little catatonic as Buck tells them about his first kiss all the way back in first grade.

He doesn't remember much of the drive back to the station. Bits and pieces. Like Chimney kissing a Clara at age eleven, and Bobby kissing a Jane at nine. He remembers them all turning to him expectantly, and being saved from answering by someone falling off the roof and the topic is dropped until they get back to the firehouse where everyone rounds on him like hungry wolves.

Which is how he finds himself in this predicament, hidden away in the back of the ambulance.

Its Buck who finds him. Of course it is. That's just his luck.

He thinks he would have preferred Hen's gentle, but undoing eyes or Chimney's stubborn teasing over Buck's concern.

"Hey," he says softly, "figured you might be hiding in here." Buck drops onto the gurney opposite him and leans back on his hands. Eddie tears his eyes away from the bulge of his biceps. "Nobody's gonna force you to tell the story, Eddie. Not if you don't want to. You know that. Its just a bit of fun."

"I know that." He huffs, buries his head in his hands. "I know that. I just—"

He can't hide this from Buck, is the thing. He can't. Not now that he knows. Because he doesn't hide stuff from his best friend, his partner. And, somehow, someday, Buck will figure it out anyway and he'll hate Eddie for not telling him. It doesn't have to mean anything. It could just be a funny anecdote they break out at parties. But the problem is that Eddie desperately wants it to mean something.

"When I was twelve, I went to camp." He takes a deep breath, does a mental inventory of the equipment in the ambulance just so he doesn't have to look at Buck. "On the last day, we had this party and someone told me that Sarah wanted to kiss me."

"Sarah, huh?" Buck grins, eyes bright and just as beautiful under the fluorescent lights as they had been by the lake. "Was she cute?"

"Buck, just let me finish." He sighs when the words come out harsher than intended, but Buck only slumps back against the wall behind him. "I was nervous because I'd never kissed anyone before and I didn't want to mess it up. And this boy," Eddie frowns down at his trembling hands, "he offered to help me practice."

"Eddie Diaz," Buck smirks and Eddie doesn't bother with the futile pretence of pretending that doesn't make his stomach flip. "Two kisses in one day? You dog."

"The week after camp ended," Eddie carries on, the words not stopping now that they've started, "I went to Sunday School and they told us about how some men were unnatural." He looks up just in time to see Buck suck in a sharp breath, watches Buck's eyes turn sad and pained and ever so slightly angry.

"Eds—"

"Its funny," Eddie laughs, but its a rueful thing, "how much that lesson fucked me up. Because for the past two decades of my life I thought Sarah was my first kiss." He tilts his head up to the ceiling as his vision starts to blur, sniffs against the sting in his eyes. "But my first kiss was with the most beautiful boy I'd ever seen." He digs his fingers into the meat of his thighs, forces himself to meet Buck's heavy eyes. "He had blond hair and blue eyes and a birthmark on his brow that was the same colour as his lips." He sees the moment it hits Buck, sees the shock ripple through him. "His name was Evan, and I didn't let myself think about him for so long that I had no idea he was right next to me."

The confession unfolds in the air between them.

Something shifts.

Silence settles.

Eddie wipes his hands on his uniform pants, and chants quiet in his head about a thousand times, begging for the EMS gods to—

"I'm a much better kisser now." Buck murmurs. Eddie's eyes snap back to him so fast it makes him a little dizzy.

"What?"

"I-I didn't know what I was doing back then." Buck says, something wild in his eyes. "But I know now." Eddie's heart thumps against his ribs. "Let me do it again, Eddie." He whispers, leaning forward. They're only an inch away from each other now, Buck's heat embracing him despite the air between them. "Let me do it properly this time. Let me make it so good you'll have no choice but to remember."

"Evan—" His breath catches in his throat as Buck takes his hand. He just stares down at their interlaced fingers.

"Eddie, please let me do this for you." Buck begs.

"Okay." Eddie breathes. If Buck is shocked, he's nowhere near as shocked as Eddie is himself.

Buck brings his free hand up to cup Eddie's cheek and Eddie covers it with his own, eyes fluttering closed at the first touch of rough palms against his face. A nose bumps into his and Eddie's eyes fly open again, panic seizing in his chest.

"Wait, Buck, wait." He chokes out. "I can't— Not with you. This can't—" He squeezes his eyes shut, screws up his face at the look of heartbreak on his friend's face. "It can't be just one kiss, Buck, not with you."

"Eddie, I've kissed a lot of people in my life," Buck brings their foreheads together, "but no kiss has ever made me feel like you do."

"I love you." Eddie breathes, hand fisting in the back of Buck's uniform shirt. "I loved Evan, and I loved Buck, and I love you. I love you, I love you, I love you."

When Buck kisses him for the second time, something inside of him slots back into place.

Crimes of Impulse - Murders of Jealousy and Rage

Impulse crimes are commonly referred to as ‘crimes of passion’ or acts carried out in the ‘heat of the moment’. Often the ‘passion’ concerns a romantic or sexual relationship, or may simply mean no more than any strong emotion one is experiencing such as rage or anger.

Broadly speaking, crimes can often be broken up into two defined categories: expressive and instrumental. Expressive crimes, or our crimes of impulse,  are contrasted by instrumental crimes; those preceded by planning, and carried out with malice aforethought. Certain motives behind crimes are judged as more understandable and forgivable; others as vile or inhuman.

When things go wrong in the sphere of love, we may find jealousy - and where we find jealousy, to an extreme enough degree, serious crimes including murder can occur, many as acts of spontaneity and in the heat of ‘passion’. Jealousy can be understood as an extreme emotional state, hardwired in our brains over centuries of evolution, to safeguard what we consider to be most precious to us. Our susceptibility to jealousy is shared by near all of us, and is why we so often find it in the works of art and literature - from Shakespeare’s Othello to Euripides‘ Medea. Of course, not all spontaneous violence and murder relates to jealousy - violence during brawls or in the course of an argument are often spurred by feelings of intense anger and rage.

George Skiadopoulos

In 1999, George Skiadopoulos was convicted of the murder of 31-year old Julie Scully. A former model, Julie met George, a Greek sailor, while on a cruise in the Caribbean. Bored in her marriage to her current husband, Julie and George began an affair, following which Julie divorced her husband and began to live with George. An intensely jealous man, George often spied on Julie’s private phone calls and became increasingly argumentative, in one instance going so far as to choke Julie’s mother. After charges forced him to return to Greece, Julie, who had returned with him and grown weary of both George and her new life, insisted on returning to the United States. George lured Julie to a remote spot and strangled her, before proceeding to dismember the body and dispose of it in the Aegean Sea.

Clara Harris

Clara Suarez Harris, the only child of an affluent family, lived an upscale and flourished life in Houston, Texas with her husband, David Harris, both of whom shared in the profession of dentistry. Busy with both motherhood and a successful practice, David felt sidelined by Clara, and soon began an affair with his receptionist, Gail Bridges. However, the affair soon become known to Clara, who, after hiring a private investigator, traveled to the hotel David and Gail were staying in. Upon them emerging from the lobby, Clara proceeded to mow down her husband with her car, driving over him a further two times in order to kill him.

Jeremy Akers

Born to a working-class family in Mississippi, Jeremy Akers was the typical all-American overachiever - a straight-A student, bodybuilder and highly competitive individual; graduating law school before serving in Vietnam. Upon his return,  Jeremy married Nancy Richards, to whom he was brash, domineering, jealous and possessive. The marriage soon began to deteriorate. Depressed after the birth of her third child and feeling unappreciated by her husband, Nancy struck up an acquaintance with truck driver, Jim Lemke. The pair shared an appreciation of writing and soon became lovers. Having already suspected the two’s infidelity, Jeremy’s feelings only escalated upon Nancy suing for divorce. Using the pretext of discussing divorce details, Jeremy lured Nancy back to their house, where he shot her to death with a .38 before turning the gun on himself. 

Impulse Murders: Emphasis on Rage

Robert Rowe

Robert was born one of two brothers raised in a Protestant family. Married to a Catholic woman (despite the protests of his mother) to whom he had two sons with: Bobby and Chris, who was born blind and deaf due to his wife’s early contraction of rubella during pregnancy. Robert was described as unusually stoic in the face of his son’s condition, forming a support group for other couples in similar situations. When he was forty, he and his wife adopted a young girl. Three years later, Robert’s mother passed away, but not before humiliating him by admitting she wished she had aborted him before he was born, as she had with her first two pregnancies. She considered Robert as nothing more than a lowly bureaucrat and a fake, and disinherited him in a final act of spite. Robert soon became seriously depressed, suffering recurrent dreams in which his mother urged him to kill his family. Receiving psychiatric treatment for his depression, Robert was unable to continue work as an attorney and took up a job as a New York cab driver. However, not long after, his cab was stolen and Robert was unwillingly reduced to a house husband while Mary worked. Upon discovering his other child, Bobby, had developed a congenital hip disease that may render him wheelchair bound, Robert ceased taking his medication and slipped further into depression. The suggestion to place Chris in the care of an institution was raised by Robert, but ultimately dismissed by his wife, further deteriorating the situation. The culmination of these events came about in 1978, wherein Robert took a baseball bat to his three children, bludgeoning them to death. Upon her return home, Robert instructed his wife to put on a blindfold as he had a ‘surprise’ for her - the surprise being him proceeding to bludgeon her to death with the bat as well. Robert then attempted suicide by way of the gas from his oven, but was rescued by a neighbor.

Susan Wright

Susan Wyche worked as a go-go dancer at the local discotheque, where she met her soon-to-be husband, Jeff Wright. An affair soon ensued, the result of which was Susan falling pregnant to Jeff, who, to Susan’s irritation, delayed in marrying her until she was eight months along in her pregnancy. While Jeff’s job as a fairly successful salesman afforded them the ability to live in relative comfort, he was addicted to both cocaine and other women - avocations ruinous to both their finances and their marriage. In 2003, Susan’s anger having reached a tipping point, she enticed Jeff into their bedroom under the pretext of engaging in bondage activities, allowing himself to be restrained to the four corner-posts of their bed. In a burst of rage, Susan mutilated his genitals and stabbed Jeff near two hundred times. Panicked, Susan dragged the body to their yard before disposing of it in a pit, dug earlier by Jeff for an unknown reason. Susan had planned to tell people Jeff had simply ‘disappeared’, however this would prove to be in vain, as their dog dug up the body only a few days later.

Dr. Bruce Rowan

Idaho-born to a large family, of which he was the youngest, Bruce Rowan was depressed for most of his life, grappling with feelings of unworthiness and suicidal idealisation. During the course of his academic studies as a medical student, Bruce continued to suffer from suicidal thoughts, for which he was temporarily hospitalised. Debbie, Bruce’s girlfriend, stood by him during this time, partly due to her love for him, partly out of the fearful belief that were she to leave, he would attempt to kill himself. The pair married and spent considerable time traveling the world and doing charitable work in various countries before returning to the United States to settle down. Bruce was still determined to travel, to provide aid to the needy, in hopes this would alleviate his continual feelings of unworthiness. Following their adoption of a young girl, Debbie was often preoccupied with caring for their baby, and Bruce, saddled with chores and finding himself with less quality time with Debbie, began to grow resentful. In 1998, Bruce’s resentment turned to rage, and he murdered Debbie using an axe. Bruce then placed the body in their car before pushing it down a hill in an attempt to convey the appearance of an unfortunate accident. At trial, Bruce was ultimately found not guilty by way of mental illness.

¿Cómo es mi ciudad ideal?

Mi ciudad ideal tendría calles muy claras, sería lo más ordenada posible de manera de que siempre puedas de alguna u otra manera saber donde estás y puedas llegar fácilmente a donde vas. Sería un ciudad con mucha vegetación . Además sería lo más sustentable posible, se implementaría la economía circular. Tendría leyes claras y lógicas que se puedan cumplir, sobre todo referentes al cuidado del medio ambiente y la funcionalidad de todos los servicios para todo tipo de personas. Sería segura tanto de día como de noche. Arquitectónicamente sería muy minimalista, no tendría edificios ni casa con fachadas ostentosas, solo tendría museos, teatros, centros culturales, etc. con un estilo romano de arquitectura por lo que resaltarían sobre los demás edificios y casas. INICIÓ LA OBRA DE URBANIZACIÓN DEL BARRIO FERRARI EN JOSÉ C. PAZ

El presidente de la cooperativa Construyendo Libertad y responsable del Movimiento Evita local, Nicolás Lemos, inauguró el inicio de una obra de integración socio urbana en el barrio Ferrari de José C. Paz. La obra consiste en 4 mil metros de vereda en 16 manzanas, 133 instalaciones eléctricas intra domiciliarias, arbolado público y canastos de residuos. Proyecto para integrar a la comunidad y mejorar la calidad de vida de los vecinos y vecinas.

El evento contó con la presencia de la concejala de San Miguel, Claudia Borras; el director de Desarrollo Cooperativo y Mutual del Inaes, Sebastián Díaz; el responsable de Organización provincial del Movimiento Evita, Juan Luna; el referente nacional del Frente de Liberados del Evita, Matías Dimicroff;y la responsable del Movimiento Evita de Tres de Febrero, Amalia Suarez.

"Para nosotros es fundamental que se entienda que el modelo de cooperativismo funciona y resuelve cuestiones que hoy en nuestra sociedad son de clara emergencia. Cada uno de los 40 compañeros y compañeras que empieza esta obra va a cobrar un sueldo de convenio UOCRA, y nosotros entendemos que la dignificación de los trabajadores es fundamental para proyectar una vida que sea superadora", afirmó Lemos.

La diversidad del grupo de trabajo incluye mujeres que sufrieron violencia de género, personas liberadas con antecedentes penales y hombres mayores de 45 años. "La idea es solucionar lo que lo privado no soluciona. Con los liberados generamos una política de seguridad más trabajo", destacó Lemos.

Con esta obra, se busca mejorar las condiciones de vida de los vecinos de José C. Paz y promover políticas inclusivas y solidarias.

Cubans turn to electric transport

Electric vehicles are making an appearance in Cuba as fuel prices and US sanctions cripple traditional transport.

There is a new sight on the streets of Havana: increasing numbers of electric vehicles whizzing among the old American cars so emblematic of the Cuban capital.

As fuel shortages and US sanctions take their toll, and even though electricity generation can be spotty, Cubans are turning to smaller, cheaper, plug-in alternatives.

“Gasoline? Imagine. After 50 years battling to get hold of it, I don’t even want to smell it anymore!” taxi driver Sixto Gonzalez, 58, told AFP atop the shining, electric-blue quadricycle with which he moves through the streets at a top speed of about 40 kilometers (25 miles) per hour.

Gonzalez has abandoned his old, combustion-engine car—one of about 600,000 registered on the island of 11.2 million people, according to official data.

The last time he tried to fill it up, he stood in a queue for eight hours.

By far the majority of cars in circulation in Cuba are American models from the 1950s—before sanctions started—and compact Ladas from the Soviet era.

Newer models are practically impossible to lay one’s hands on and come with a hefty price tag of between about $20,000 and $100,000.

The quadricycle Gonzalez bought, by comparison, can be obtained for between $4,000 and $8,000 and though slower, can get four or five people from Point A to Point B.

Also increasingly popular are electric motorbikes—of which there are an estimated 40,000 to 50,000 in Cuba—and three-wheelers all the more frequently seen dragging a carriage full of passengers or goods.

A quadricycle can be bought for between $4,000 and $8,000, a fraction of the price of a traditional car.

‘Museum on wheels’

In a once-abandoned Soviet-era truck factory in the central city of Santa Clara, about 100 workers of the company Minerva assemble electric vehicles with parts imported from China or Vietnam.

The objective for 2022 is to produce 10,000 electric motorbikes, Minerva boss Elier Perez told AFP—double the factory’s previous record—as well as 2,000 three-wheelers.

“I had to buy one because the fuel ran out and the queues are endless,” said Raul Suarez, a 52-year-old security guard who got himself an electric motorbike.

“I have to be able to get around.”

Not only are cars prohibitively expensive and scarce, but public transport in the capital is a daily ordeal for many.

Half of buses are out of service for a lack of tires and batteries that cannot be imported due to US sanctions, said transport ministry official Guillermo Gonzalez.

The Minerva factory aims to assemble 10,000 electric motorcycles in 2022.

Havanans sometimes wait for hours for a bus to get to work or back home.

At the same time, fuel shortages have worsened since the US reinforced its six-decade-old economic blockade of the communist island in 2019, preventing the arrival of fuel tankers from Venezuela, a Cuban ally.

Petrol supply plummeted from 100,000 barrels a day to about 56,000 barrels per day on average in 2021, said Jorge Pinon, a Cuban energy policy expert at the University of Texas.

Three years ago, the government began to promote the use of electric cars, introducing them to state-owned companies to be used by workers.

“Cuba is a museum on wheels,” said Gonzalez of the abundance of decades-old gas guzzlers.

It is hoped that a rollout of electric cars will lower “fuel consumption… and at the same time reduce pollution,” he added.

Three years ago, the government began to promote the use of electric cars.

Petrol supply to Cuba plummeted from 100,000 barrels a day to about 56,000 barrels per day on average in 2021.

Like a fridge

But electricity supply, too, is a concern.

For weeks now, Cubans have had to deal with regular cuts, sometimes lasting hours at a time, due to generation failures and maintenance work on thermoelectric plants.

And in a bid to make up some of the shortage, the authorities have turned to generators that use up much of the limited diesel stock.

“There has never been a situation as difficult as the one we have now, and there are still three months of summer to come,” said Pinon, alluding to the annual warm-weather rise in demand for energy to run air conditioners.

Ramses Calzadilla, director of strategy at Cuba’s energy ministry, said he was confident that electricity generation would be restored to full capacity shortly and insisted the situation did not threaten the burgeoning electric vehicle sector.

“An electric motorcycle uses about as much energy as a refrigerator,” he told AFP, and can be charged quickly and cheaply between programmed power cuts.
