We know you made TSP and then TSPUD, Davey, but from a game maker perspective, what does Coda think of them?? You both had very different opinions on what games should be back then, so I am very curious!!
Coda's answer:
Maybe I should make The Intermediate Guide for the reviews of the narrator games.
They're both Playable Games. Or, even, all three of them are. They're his prison games. They're all the same but also, they're not - they are all talking in different languages.
He always liked short games. But he always wanted more. So to set up short games in a bigger game seems fair. Especially since he used to not realise how much his brain liked to loop.
He's great at commentary that says a lot about everything but also talks about himself. Probably that's why the emo phase Narrator had got changed into softness of a Bucket.
If not for Cookie9, the Bucket wouldn't be here. And without that, I wouldn't be here, either.
Ultra Deluxe is a great prison game. He finally got out of his labyrinth.

1. And 2. There isn't one. I like good music. I like creation. And it's so hard to choose.
I like Oh Helloes. But I also like Ryan Roth. Due to the bias - I'll choose him. But it's not a completely right answer.
3. I like Pop. But I have always been into nichés. So - idk.
I'm one of those blue hair people with pronouns. Ha ha.

I’ve been thinking a lot about late-deafened Steve, and what that actually would have looked like. Because the thing is: I love this head cannon. Boy got bashed around so much, ESPECIALLY on his left side, theres no way he didn’t come out of that with some long term damage. And I’ve been thinking about what that means for him, when his hearing starts to go, and how isolating that would be.
Except. Then I keep thinking about Robin.
Give me child-of-Deaf-adults Robin. Robin whose parents met at Gallaudet. Who were confused and upset when the doctor said, relief clear on his face, oh thank god, how lucky, your baby is normal, she can HEAR. Robin who grows up a in a Deaf home with a Deaf family. Who learns ASL before she learns English. Who never learns to be quiet because at home it doesn’t matter, so she can blast trumpet all day long to no complaints, and forever feels uncomfortable in places where she has to try to keep it down. Robin who grows up learning ASL and English and thrives, loves the way her brain works when it’s parsing languages, and starts teaching herself French and Spanish too, blasting day time Spanish soap operas constantly whenever she’s at home, shouting along with the screen. Robin who interprets for her parents, taking on burdens no seven year old should when she’s the one who has to tell her mom the cancers back. Robin who, four years later, gets to tell her dad that the surgery worked. The cancers gone. Moms gonna be ok. Robin who, at eleven, doesn’t know the sign for remission but she signs CANCER-one hand eating at the other like the disease that almost took her Mom-and signs FINISH, signs NONE, signs MOM-OKAY, MOM-SAFE, and is glad her dad can’t hear how loud her sobs are because even she’s embarrassed at the noises she’s making. 
Robin who doesn’t quite fit at home, the loud little girl in the odd quiet house (not that her house is ever quiet: if you dont realize you’re making noise you don’t do anything to tamper it), and who doesn’t quite fit at school, when she shows up in kindergarten signing instead of speaking and all the other kids make fun of her for years, call her spazzy Buckley and imitate the signs, crude and heartbreaking and she can’t even cry here because everyone can hear her. Robin who teaches herself to speak without signing, sits on her hands and tries not to internalize the hatred, but her fingers still twitch constantly along with the words. Robin who thinks she’s never going to fit in, and tries to separate out the two different parts of herself because it’s easier, most days, to pretend to be “normal” even though that feels wrong too.
Give me Robin, who knows Steve inside out and who knows what it looks like when someone can’t hear you but pretends they can. Robin who clocks Steve immediately, even though he tries to brush her off like he’s been doing to everyone. Robin who finally takes him home to meet her parents, explaining it all in the car (into his right ear, which is better than the left though still starting to fade). Robin who gives Steve the gift of understanding and hope for the future. Who holes up with him and teaches him sign, slow at first (because Steve has never been good at grammar, and he constantly furrows his eyebrows despite her pleas that eyebrows are important in ASL and he needs to use his face more or he’s going to confuse everyone, it’s the visual equivalent of lilting your voice up like every sentence is a question and it’s weird, Steve!) and then faster as he starts to realize how useful it is, starts to bring her lists full of signs to learn, starts to lean on and cherish the experience of this new way to communicate. Robin, who helps him practice lipreading even though she’s terrible at it. Robin, who finally convinces him to get a hearing aid and lets him sob into her shoulder when the doctor says it’ll help for a few years, but long term there’s probably nothing they can do, and then tells him to buck it up because there are way worse things than being a little deaf and besides, now the Buckleys will just have to adopt him for real because they did always talk about adopting a deaf child or two, if there was ever one in need.
Give me CODA Robin, whose never felt like she belonged until she nearly gets murdered by Russians with her best friend. Who brings Steve into her life, shows him Deaf culture, gives him a place where he fits. Robin who finally realizes that this is her place too, and it’s so much sweeter for getting to share it with the people she loves.
And then, after, give me Eddie knocking on the Buckley door and begging to learn ASL too. Give me Robin’s mom, somehow roped in to teaching him and the party, as they try to learn in secret to make Steve’s life easier (and their own, because ASL is god tier for pulling pranks from opposite sides of a high school cafeteria). Give me Dustin, excitedly telling Miranda Buckley to FUCK-OFF every week for months because he thinks he’s saying THANK-YOU and she finds it too funny to correct him. Give me Eddie trying to surprise Steve and ask him out on a date, but instead of signing HUNGRY, WANT YOU&ME GO AFTER WORK? he signs HORNY, WANT YOU&ME GO FUCK?
And give me Steve, who thinks about it for a long minute (partially because Eddie totally botches the grammar, but partially because he looks so hot, standing there nervous and trying to communicate with Steve in a way that will make him the most comfortable) before he smirks and signs back YEAH, and takes Eddie on the best goddamn first date of his life.

Marisol hovers for a moment, awkward, then takes a step back. “So… I’m going to go home,” she says. “If we’re starting from the beginning…”
“Right,” Eddie says. “A little early for a sleepover.” 
“I guess I’ll come back tomorrow and, uh—” she gestures at the boxes. “Probably shouldn’t just leave them all hanging around.” 
“I’m on shift tomorrow,” Eddie says.
Marisol holds up her key.
“Uh, right,” Eddie says again. “Then I guess… I’ll see you when I see you?” 
Something flits across Marisol’s face, but it’s gone before he can figure out what it is. “See you,” she says, and turns for the door. 
Eddie feels like he should say something, but he’s still trying to decide on what that would be by the time the door slips shut.
And he’s—he’s not relieved. He’s not. Or if he is, it’s just because this whole unresolved mess has been hanging over his head like the sword of Damocles.
Sword’s still there, some helpful part of him reminds him. You just stepped out of range for a moment.
Depends on what the sword is, he tries to argue, then sighs. He can’t keep track of the metaphor. Definitely not enough to debate himself about it. 
Buck would get it, he thinks. Buck would go off on some tangent to explain what the sword of Damocles actually was, and probably tell him he’d gotten it wrong. He’d have some much better analogy to wrap it all up in, and would probably make the entire situation make more sense.
For a moment his fingers hover near his pocket, itching to get out his phone and call Buck. To ask if he’s doing the right thing, or just kicking the can down the road a little. Since the sword is still—
Whatever the fuck the sword is, Marisol is still an ex-nun and Eddie’s not sure if he’s quite right enough with God for that. 
But he can’t call Buck, because he’d walked out of Buck’s loft half an hour ago with firm instructions to call Tommy, and he can’t interrupt that. He’s already crashed their date, which—
Oh, God. The date. No wonder Buck had been acting so strange. The urge to call comes over him again, stronger now, to apologise for walking in on something that must have been so nerve-wracking already, but—
He remembers the way Buck’s face split into a smile when he said I can’t stop thinking about him, and he sighs and crosses his arms. This isn’t about him and his problems. It’s about Buck, who looked happier than Eddie has seen him in—months, probably. Happier than he’d been with Natalia, for sure. He doesn’t know if he’s ever seen that particular look on Buck’s face, giddy at the mere thought of a person and full of joy and hope for the future. 
And suddenly, there’s a thousand things he wants to ask Buck.
How had he known? How had he been sure? How had he trusted that the little flutter in his gut meant something real?
How had he been brave enough to try?
But the questions will have to wait. Because at this very moment Buck is calling Tommy, his nerves smoothing out into that giddy little smile when Tommy agrees to see him again. Which he will, because Tommy isn’t an idiot.
Maybe they’ll stay on the phone for a while. Maybe Tommy will say something that makes Buck blush, hints of bright red appearing at the tips of his ears and the very tops of his cheekbones. Maybe Buck will flirt back, and his voice will waver a little but he’ll manage to bring it home, and Tommy will laugh low in his ear.
So—no, Eddie can’t interrupt that. No matter how many questions he may have.

some important and underrated lines in the books, related to wylan van eck (aka gold that i found again while writing the character study fic):
Wylan took a deep breath as if sucking in courage and sputtered, “You won’t throw me overboard. You need me.”
--- Six of Crows, Chapter 13. when i say wylan is unhinged, i mean he had the audacity to lie to kaz brekker (who doesn't know yet that wylan isn't the best hostage) AND use that lie to go against kaz AND actually win. jesper only notices wylan lying to kaz in the second book, but despite being wide-eyed as matthias describes, wylan's been lying to kaz from the very beginning. throughout the books, wylan gets better and better at using people's assumptions of him as a weapon/tool, and he admits as much when jesper says: "i'm going to stop underestimating you", and wylan replies: "then you're going to be a lot harder to surprise."
While Kaz explained and Jesper used the laundry shears to portion out pieces of rope, Wylan helped Inej and Nina prepare. To pass as members of the Menagerie, they would need tattoos.

HE LIKES NUMBERS. and music. and jesper. there's just something about wylan being forced into chemistry when he doesn't truly enjoy it, vs. everything his father's forced him to do when he doesn't truly enjoy it. he says this right after the we could wake him up line, and him mentioning that he doesn't even like what he's been doing all along underscores how much wylan's ruthlessness comes from a place where he doesn't want to be cruel. he's just. had to do a lot of things to survive. and he does want to survive
Gunfire sounded from above. Apparently, Wylan had found the controls. ... Wylan had scratches from the glass all over his cheeks and neck. He was beaming.
--- Six of Crows, Chapter 39. wylan is unhinged. truly. and i love him, really. he was really the first to figure out how to fire the tank. him, not jesper, which was a choice i very much approve of
He should be making a plan, maybe even plotting revenge, trying to gather his wits and his resources. And what was he doing? Wishing he could ring for tea... Whatever it took to survive the Barrel, Wylan knew he didn’t have it.
--- Crooked Kingdom, Chapter 23. first, wylan wishing he could ring for tea, vs. the parallel in the show where he offers the crows tea. second, wylan being painfully honest with himself. but third, he ends the chapter being able to navigate the streets of the barrel himself without knowing how to read the signs, which really reflects his amazingly good memory and skill for thinking along three axes, like the lockpick kaz compared him to
“Yes,” Wylan said, that one word imbued with a whole world of hope. “But I don’t have anything to bargain with.”
--- Crooked Kingdom, Chapter 28. wylan's spent so long bargaining for his life that by the time he meets genya, he doesn't believe he has anything left to bargain with. but wylan still tries, AND when he succeeds, he still has the audacity to get genya to make him look better
in conclusion, wylan might be shy but that doesn't mean he isn't scheming something, but that doesn't mean he wants to scheme, but that doesn't mean he isn't good at scheming. he's excellent at it, he's just an unhinged ball of contradictions, and wylan would, could, and should beat kaz in a chess match

Can we talk about The Dying Swan moment in Coda? As someone who was once a very serious ballerina, I need to talk about the Dying Swan. Here's your context --
CHAKOTAY: Harry's clarinet solo was okay. I could have done without Tuvok's reading of Vulcan poetry. But the highlight of the evening was definitely Kathryn Janeway portraying the Dying Swan. JANEWAY: I learned that dance when I was six years old. I assure you, it was the hit of the Beginning Ballet class.
Have you seen The Dying Swan? It is dramatic.
Here, take a minute:

First of all, this dance is much too advanced for a six-year-old, even if they’re doing it in demi pointe. (Six-year-olds emphatically should not be in pointe shoes btw.) The dance is almost entirely bourees and arm movements done to very subtle musical cues, not the foundational ballet moves typically taught in Beginning Ballet.
This is a very vulnerable, dramatic dance that is effective because of its subtleties. The performer would need to embody that vulnerability in some way for a convincing performance. It's short, but it's a solo piece -- all eyes on you. I mean, it was choreographed for a prima ballerina, BUT THAT'S NOT MY POINT
Can you imagine our unflappable Captain Janeway willingly getting in front of her crew to do this ballet? I get that it’s thematically relevant to the plot of Coda, but since Janeway is only vulnerable in front of her crew when it means putting herself in harm’s way, it seems like a wild decision. She tends to hold herself apart from her crew, maintaining the professional distance of the captain. Further, when she does any creative pursuit, it is almost always in private, since her sister was the artist in the family and she was the scientist. As a captain, she commands Voyager in a much different way than she would as a dancer with this piece. I'm not saying she never shows vulnerability because she definitely does, but not necessarily in this way. Then when she talks about it with Chakotay, she just casually brushes it off with a laugh like no big deal.
There’s also the question of costume – would she have gone full tutu? Done it in her Starfleet uniform? An impeccable yet flow-y white suit? She does get into costume and command a performance in Bride of Chaotica!, but Coda is still kind of early days for our captain. Arachnia aligns more with what we know about Janeway's character.
Granted, it is Chakotay laying down these complements about her dancing ability and he is clearly biased. To be fair, Neelix does too before they leave in the shuttle. If she did this dance and performed it poorly or amazingly, I feel like the crew would look at her a bit differently afterwards.
Canonically she did The Dying Swan, but I certainly have trouble picturing it happening.

7 x 02 coda
The water is almost over his head, and Bobby's foremost emotion is surprise.
Next to him, Athena is gasping for breath, grasping at Bobby and the pipes on the ceiling and to life, trying her best to not let go. Bobby follows her cue, not just because he wants, needs Athena to stay alive, but he wants it for himself too. That's the surprise, that Bobby Nash has grown into a person who wants to be alive, and that it happened before death caught up to him.
Bobby's thought about dying before. It's hard not to given his life and line of work; sometimes it feels like death is all he can think about, the only thing he's surrounded by. Bodies. Fire. Screams. Anguish. Decay. Silence. Sorrow. Hatred. These are the words Bobby used to associate with death.
Hope has never been one of them.
Hen and Buck answering his cry for help, their arms around him.
His team rescuing him when Bobby had given up, because that's his team and his family and that's what they do.
May and Harry bringing him in to the family photo, Michael accepting him.
Athena bringing him into the family.
Athena coming to him after he was shot, saving him. Saving him over and over in spite of Bobby's skepticism that he deserved to be saved at all.
Athena sitting next to him on that pavement. Athena sitting next to him in the church.
"You already did that, baby."
The door opening, the light at the end of it. The voice of that terrible man, seeking his redemption.
An hour later when they're above deck, Bobby still can't swallow the feeling that he might one day take Athena to the doors of death the way he'd taken his family earlier. Frank would not like him thinking like that, but for the first time, Bobby realizes that he doesn't want to join them just yet, will not be begging death to take him as he'd done so many times before. He'll see them again one day, but damn him, that day was not going to be on a sinking cruise ship about to be hit by a wave larger than what had hit LA four years ago.
"Hold on," Bobby yells out. He catches Athena's eye. Maybe it's reckless, but Bobby knows that they would be okay. Maybe they would get out of this, maybe they won't. But whether he lives for the next forty years or minutes, he's going to try his best to get everyone out of this, not just for Athena's sake, but for himself too.
Bobby Nash is alive.

what i really enjoy about the beginner's guide is that davey (the character) does not play any of coda's games as they were meant to be played.
he is always finding some way to subvert them because he either has 1) no patience for coda's antics and/or 2) he already has an assumed idea of what the game should be about, and he forces that idea onto the game. it's like coda says: davey puts lamp posts in all his games, bc the lamp post symbolizes a meaning.
the lamp post does not mean anything; it itself is a symbol of meaning. davey projects hard onto coda, supposes that because he sees himself in coda's games, coda must also be depressed, anxious, he must also hate himself.
that must be the only explanation for any of them.
and it just. boggles my mind how the beginner's guide is always taken very literally, when it's really just an exploration on the relationship btwn a person and the art they're consuming; how someone who likes something can see that thing not for what it is, but what they think it to be.

I'm still thinking about that deleted scene of Joan touching the side of Morse's face and him putting his hand over hers.
It reminds me of the end of Coda when she gently brushes her thumb across his wound, and he instinctively holds on to her. I love that moment because it showed a loving side of Joan which was reminiscent of Monica and demonstrated she was Win's daughter as much as Thursday's. You could totally see why Morse fell for her.
I realized Joan kind of lost that side of her in the rest of the series. The closest which comes to mind is her silent kiss with her hand in Harvest.
I feel like it would've been really lovely to see that parallel of her being able to look past all the bullshit for a minute and let Morse know how much she cares for him. I think it would've gone a long way in explaining why he could never get over her.
