Legion of Super-Heroes (1989) #77
Amazing how if Colu was not part of the U.P. they would have strongly considered selling Querl.
Vril Dox II freed them all from oppressive rule only to have them turn around and be oppressive to his own bloodline in extremely cruel ways.

Note
The spoken language of Colu uses specific sounds to denote the end of a sentence in a way that is roughly equivalent to punctuation marks.
No Sound/Pausing = .
Whistling = ?
Clicking = !
The length denotes the severity. For instance, whistling for one second is the equivalent of one ?, while whistling for five seconds is ???????????

February 1964. Lex Luthor learns the true origin of Brainiac: as a humanoid "computer-spy" created by the tyrannical computer rulers of a distant planet (later called Colu).
Tumblr media
This story, which appeared in SUPERMAN #167, was a rather dramatic retcon: In his previous appearances, there was no indication that Brainiac wasn't just a green-skinned humanoid alien. His debut in ACTION COMICS #242 described his origins quite differently:
Tumblr media
So, why would National-DC and Superman editor Mort Weisinger make such a radical change to a fairly well-established villain? The explanation lies in an editorial footnote omitted from later reprints of SUPERMAN #167:
Tumblr media
As the letters column to which the footnote refers explains:
And now let us go behind the scenes and unveil a remarkable coincidence. The fictional character, "Brainiac," was created for us by Otto Binder, a famous science fiction writer who is currently the editor of "Space World," a magazine for rocket experts. (Otto also created "Bizarro" and wrote the great Superman novel, "Krypton Lives On." [SUPERMAN #132]) Shortly after the first "Brainiac" story first appeared in ACTION COMICS, in 1956 [sic; actually 1958], we learned that a REAL "Brainiac" existed … in the form of an ingenious "Brainiac Computer Kit" invented in 1955 by Edmund C. Berkeley. Mr. Berkeley is a distinguished scientist and a world authority on automation, computers and robots. In deference to his "Brainiac," which pre-dates ours, with this issue of SUPERMAN we are changing the characterization of our "Brainiac" so that the master-villain will henceforth possess a "computer personality." We are confident that our readers will approve of this transformation; it should make "Brainiac" a mightier adversary for the Man of Steel. Readers will be interested to learn that they can build their own "Brainiac" by purchasing one of Mr. Berkeley's computer kits and assembling the parts.
The latter paragraph also provides the address of the company, noting, "'Brainiac' kits cost less than $20.00 and make an ideal educational hobby."
This retcon stuck, and, as the editorial explanation suggested, did serve to make Brainiac a more formidable foe, although it created some discrepancies that were never adequately explained. The most important feature of the original Brainiac story in ACTION COMICS #242, of course, was Superman's discovery that the villain had previously stolen and shrunk the Kryptonian city of Kandor, which Superman recovered and brought to Earth at the end of that story. However, nothing in this revised origin suggests that shrinking cities and storing them in bottles to repopulate Brainiac's homeworld was part of Brainiac's original mission, or even a logical extension of it.
Years later, the early issues of L.E.G.I.O.N. '89 presented a post-Crisis version of how the computer uprising of Colu was finally resolved, which formed part of an even more convoluted origin of Brainiac.

"...BUT BRAINIAC CONTINUED IN THE PURPOSE FOR WHICH HE HAD BEEN BUILT -- TO CONQUER THE UNIVERSE."
PIC(S) INFO: Spotlight on preliminary sketch art of Superman villain and member of the Legion of Doom, Brainiac, from the "Justice" (2005-'07) maxi-series published by DC Comics. Artwork by Alex Ross.
ORIGIN: "When I began my training, I had thought the inclination toward crime to have its origins solely confined to mankind. But with the discovery of alien races and their advanced civilizations, the reality is that vice is universal and not merely centered within humanity.
On the distant planet of Colu, artificial intelligence was created in the form of a computer mind more advanced than any on that planet. This artificial life replicated itself until it became that world's dominant life form, enslaving its very creators.
But expansion and domination of the planet was not enough. The A.I. created a humanoid machine more advanced than itself. This "Brainiac" was built to expand the artificial intelligence's empire beyond Colu. Brainiac traveled from one world to another, using Coluan technology to miniaturize whole cities and populations for further study.
In years to come, the super computer that ruled Colu was destroyed, but Brainiac continued in the purpose for which he had been built -- to conquer the universe. This brought the last surviving super computer of Colu to Earth where he was confronted with the last surviving member of the Kryptonian race.
Superman had since learned that the original Coluan scientists did more than create artificial intelligence. They created artificial envy, artificial greed and artificial hatred. That makes Brainiac more than an enemy of Superman. He is an enemy of every living thing."
-- BATMAN, from Bruce Wayne's Private Files in the Batcomputer (script by Jim Krueger)

Chapter Eight: Cobra
Lucy grumbled to herself as she walked along the bank of a small river. She had been sent by Minnie to pick some blueberries that apparently grew around a pond at the end of the river. The older woman used blueberries from these bushes for her blueberry-flavored pastries. She ran out and decided to send her employee out to collect more. So now Lucy was walking through an opening in the forest alone with a wicker basket in her hand. She looked around her every few minutes, jumping every time she heard movement in the vegetation near her. She sighed for the umpteenth time, glad that she had her keys and whip, was next to a water source, and it was a Wednesday.
Even though, she didn't like being in a secluded place. Not after her most recent encounter with Kit and her other partner. Which meant, there were probably three people after, with at least one of them being a mage. Maybe she should just choose a guild and move on from Crocus. Joining a guild would definitely help her in getting rid of her attackers.
The blonde stepped over a rock that looked too loose for her to step on. She didn't want to risk falling on these rocks, much less risk falling into the river. Her thoughts turned to the young man she had met only a week ago.
Midnight.
It was a weird name but for some reason, it seemed to fit him. From what time Lucy had spent with him, he appeared to be the dark and mysterious type. He wasn't much of a talker, in fact, he didn't seem to be trusting of her. She couldn't blame him, though. Based on what Kit had said, she was after them both. That meant Midnight's injuries had been caused by Kit. Lucy would be just as distrusting as he was if she was in his place.
The blonde's mind wandered to how she wished the next day had gone. She imagined making breakfast and bringing it into her bedroom so that she and Midnight could eat together and talk without him needing to get out of bed and risk worsening his injuries. Then, after breakfast, they could talk all day, getting to know each other. Lucy had wished that Midnight could have stayed throughout the course of his recovery. She would have loved to learn about him, go out with him once he was healed enough, and maybe have a relationship. She remembered seeing a guild mark on his shoulder. She didn't recognize it and was interested in learning about his guild. If things had gone well between the two of them, she could have joined his guild.
Lucy blushed at her thoughts, trying to drag herself out. She couldn't believe herself! She was now either daydreaming about Cana, Bixlow, Erza, Laxus, and Midnight, or she was watching out for Kit and her two partners. She was in a constant state of confusion about her sexuality and why she was attracted to multiple people, and her fear of being attacked again.
She was thrown out of her thoughts when she suddenly tripped on a rock. She released a yelp and landed painfully on her knees and hands. She groaned as she dragged herself to a nearby rock that was large enough for her to sit on. She looked at the knees of her black stockings, seeing that to her dismay they had been torn across both knees. A tiny amount of blood was beading from a small cut on her right knee, but her left knee only had a bit of dirt on it. She then looked at her hands, finding that they were also covered in a small amount of dirt, but no blood.
The pain had lessened greatly as she was just about to stand up and pick up the wicker basket she had dropped and check if it had been damaged when she heard the vegetation behind her rustling. Lucy bolted up to her feet and whipped around. She pulled out Aquarius' key and held it in her right hand while with she placed her left hand on her whip. She took a step back, preparing herself to run toward the river and summon her mermaid spirit. She watched as the vegetation continued to rustle and a man stepped out, causing her to freeze with widened eyes.
Cobra trudged through a forest, wishing that Angel would shut the hell up already. He glanced at Cubellios, sharing a look of annoyance with the large, purple snake. Angel was rambling on about something that was most likely stupid and pointless. They had been sent out of the Oracion Seis base due to having gotten into a fight with each other. Brain told them to not return until the end of the day. It was torture and Cobra was close to turning on his Guild Master. Or, maybe he'll just turn on Angel and get her to stop talking.
He wasn't too surprised that Brain had been very short-tempered since Midnight returned with bandaged injuries. Brain was furious that Midnight had been so careless as to get ambushed by some mage. He had sent his "son" out of the base before he decided to give him more injuries in a fit of rage. Cobra had decided that he'd have pity on the slightly younger man and changed his bloodied bandages. He also listened as Midnight talked about some beautiful blonde that helped him and he saved. Cobra remembered having to suppress a laugh at the fact that he could clearly tell that Midnight had fallen in love with this blonde and yet didn't realize it. Midnight may be scary and strong, but he wasn't the brightest when it came to feelings and people in general. It was hilarious, in Cobra's opinion.
As the two stepped over a fallen tree, Cobra was hit with a whiff of strawberries and vanilla. He stopped in his tracks and inhaled deeply. The scent was almost intoxicating. He looked to his left and inhaled again. He looked to Cubellios, seeing her flicker her tongue and look back at him. He knew that she smelled the scent as well. Cobra looked back at Angel. He allowed himself to smirk when he saw that she was still walking, not aware of her guildmate having stopped walking beside her. The dragon slayer and his large snake silently walked toward the source of the scent.
They, or rather, Cobra, had been walking for several minutes when he came to what he was able to tell was a river by the sound of the running water. He also knew that the source of the scent was just on the other end of the vegetation he came to. He stuck his hands through the leaves and small branches, pushing his way through the vegetation, trying to not tear his own clothing or harm himself or his companion. He managed to accomplish these tasks and stepped through the vegetation. He froze when he looked up and saw what, or who, had drawn him.
Right in front of him was a beautiful blonde, standing in what looked like a fighting stance. In one hand was a golden key, a Zodiac Celestial Spirit Gate Key, and her other hand was on a brown leather whip. He took in her appearance. She was wearing a short, blue and white, plaid skirt and black stockings. He guessed she had fallen because the knees of her stockings were torn and a tiny bit of blood was on one knee. Her shirt was a form-fitting, white, button-up that showed off her large bust. On her feet were white, Mary Jane heels. No wonder she ended up falling. Who the hell wears heels when walking on a bunch of loose rocks?
Cobra's purple gaze traveled to the young woman's face. Her face was heart-shaped and she had large, pretty, brown eyes. Her lips were pink and kissable. She stared at him in shock and with widened eyes. She clearly hadn't expected to run into someone, especially not someone with a large snake right beside him.
Cobra straightened. He gave the blonde a smirk that told her that while he wasn't going to jump straight to harming her, he would fight back if she attacked him. He then spoke to her calmly, "what are you doing here?" Sure, she wasn't anywhere near the base, but she was still a mage,  and a celestial wizard, so he would rather be on the safer side and be on guard.
He watched as she took a couple of steps back and answered, "I was walking to the end of this river to collect blueberries."
Cobra stuffed his hands into his pockets. He watched the woman glance at Cubellios and listened to her thoughts. He suppressed a genuine smile when he heard her call the snake pretty and wonder if her scales were smooth. The dragon slayer gestured toward his companion, saying, "you can pet her if you want. Her name is Cubellios." He knew that this mage didn't pose any threat and she wasn't looking from his guild, so he didn't see any reason to not be nice to her. Her thoughts would have given her away if she had any other reason to be in this forest.
The blonde put her key back on her keyring and walked forward. She wobbled a little as she walked, clearly having difficulty walking on the loose rocks. Unsurprisingly, she ended up falling again.
Without thinking, Cobra launched himself forward, catching the blonde before she could further get hurt. He helped her regain her balance and held out his hand. When she placed her hand in his, he noticed a slight blush dust her cheeks and heard her silently marvel at how warm his hand was. He felt his own cheeks heat up as he helped her walk the rest of the way to Cubellios. The blonde reached forward and ran her hand over the top of the large snake's head. Cobra heard her silently admire the smoothness of Cubellios' scales and her pretty color. His eyes softened as he observed the blonde. Nobody had ever thought such things about his lifelong friend, only that she was scary-looking or creepy.
The blonde looked at Cobra, causing him to look away in order to hide the blush on his face and the way he was looking at her. He turned his purple eyes to his reptilian friend. The blonde asked him, "what's your name? I'm Lucy."
Cobra glanced at her before he looked back at the snake that was obviously enjoying the petting she was receiving from Lucy. He answered in a soft tone that he hadn't meant to use, "Cobra. My name is Cobra."
The blonde laughed lightly. It was a sound that he wouldn't mind hearing every day. She commented, "that's a funny name. It's really good. Fits you in my opinion." Cobra felt his face heat once again, though this time a fluttering feeling appeared in his gut.
He then asked his own question, "why were you looking for blueberries? Baking something?" He turned his gaze to the smaller mage, happy that Lucy was looking at Cubellios and not him. This gave him the chance to admire her without her noticing.
Lucy answered calmly, "I work at a bakery that also functions as a cafe. My employer ran out of blueberries so she sent me to get some more." She gestured toward the wicker basket that lay on the ground. Cobra nodded in understanding. He pushed down the urge to grin to himself. This day just went from bad to great. He was just handed a chance to spend more time with Lucy and not creep her out.
He was about to ask Lucy if she wanted some help with picking blueberries, he smelled a familiar scent. He silently groaned, knowing that Angel had realized his disappearance and was looking for him. The white-haired woman burst through the vegetation, drawing the curious and surprised gaze of Lucy and the annoyed gaze of Cobra and Cubellios. Angel narrowed her gaze and stalked over to the trio. She demanded angrily, "what are you doing, Cobra? You just wandered off!"
Cobra suppressed a groan. He was about to respond when Lucy spoke up, "hello! Are you a friend of Cobra? I'm Lucy."
Angel looked at the other young woman. She spat out her question, "who are you?"
Lucy answered, "I just told you."
Angel scoffed. She turned to Cobra, asking, "why are you with her?" She crossed her arms over her chest and glared at the pair.
Cobra rolled his eyes. He didn't need to listen to Angel's thoughts to know why she was so upset. It wasn't because she thought that Lucy was a threat to their guild. The blonde obviously wasn't if Cobra was being friendly with her. Angel was upset because she had romantic feelings for him and had quite a jealous streak.
The dragon slayer stated, "Lucy and I are just talking. There is no reason to get hostile, Angel."
The white-haired woman scoffed. She walked over with confident strides and entered herself between the two, pushing Lucy away from Cobra and causing her to fall onto her rear with a small yelp. Cobra grabbed Angel's arm and pulled her back, almost throwing her behind him. He then rushed to Lucy's side. Just as he was about to bend down and help her to her feet, Angel threatened, "if you touch her, I will summon one of my spirits!"
Cobra glared at her, daring her to follow through with her threat as he gently helped Lucy to her feet. Angel pulled out a silver key and pointed it outward to her left, calling, "Open! Gate of The Chisel: Caelum!" With a flash of silver light, a levitating metal ball with a halo floating above it appeared right next to the celestial wizard.
Cobra grimaced. He hated this spirit. It was the only one that could actually get a hit on him. He heard Lucy gasp and say, "you're a celestial wizard too?"
Angel laughed menacingly and said with a grin, "how wonderful! I wasn't expecting to get some new keys today, but who better to take your keys than an angel?"
Cobra pushed Lucy behind him, a strong urge to protect her engulfing him. Cubellios joined her partner as he growled, "no way are you going to hurt her!"
Angel seethed, "I've killed another celestial wizard before, I can do it again!" At this, Lucy stepped to the side to stare at the older woman in alarm. Angel then gave her spirit an order, "Caelum! Canon form!" The celestial spirit glowed and dutifully turned into what looked like a high-tech canon. The white-haired woman smirked, knowing that she had a good chance of getting a hit on Lucy.
Cobra knew what was coming and braced himself for the attack. Angel commanded, "aim at the blonde and fire, Caelum!" The spirit did as it was told, charging itself and soon blasting a green beam at Lucy.
Cobra, having expected this attack, whipped around to grab Lucy and jumped out of the way, Cubellios following him. He sat Lucy on her feet behind him and turned to face his guildmate. He didn't intend to hurt her, but he was going to send her spirit back to its world. His hand became encompassed in red and black poison and dashed towards Caelum with his fist raised, jumping into the air once he got close enough to land a good punch. Before the spirit could recharge itself and fire again, Cobra announced his spell, "Poison Dragon's Sharp Horn!" and brought his fist down on top of it, causing Angel to jump away so that she wouldn't get caught in the attack's flurry. Cobra stepped back a few times and watched as a stream of poison was released from the spirit, causing it to disappear in a flash of silver light.
The Poison Dragon Slayer turned to Angel. Raising a fist, he threatened, "go away or I'll poison you!"
Angel clenched her teeth and almost hissed. Knowing that none of her spirits could fit Cobra, she turned on her heel and rushed into the forest. Cobra heard her swear that she was going to tell Brain about this.
Cobra turned to Lucy, seeing that she was staring at him in awe and disbelief. Even her mind was blank. He chuckled, guessing that she wasn't a part of a guild because she surely would have witnessed a mage perform spells just as impressive, if not more so. He walked over to her and placed a hand on her shoulder. Once she blinked her beautiful eyes a few times and focused her attention on him, he asked, "you okay?"
Lucy nodded. Cobra listened to her thoughts and heard her silently marvel at his strength and magical power. He also heard her admire his good looks. The dragon slayer walked over to the wicker basket, picked it up, and examined it to check for any damage. When he saw that it was fine, he walked back over to Lucy and held out his arm for her to take, asking with a smile, "mind if I help with collecting blueberries?"
Lucy smiled back and took his arm, allowing him to help her walk on the loose rocks. The blonde then asked him, watching her step carefully, "are you a part of a guild?"
Cobra shook his head. He knew that he shouldn't tell her about him being a dark guild member, so instead, he said, "I'm an independent mage. I and a few friends just kinda do our own thing." Lucy nodded in acknowledgment of what he said. Cobra then questioned, "what about you?"
Lucy shrugged. "I'm torn between two guilds."
Cobra raised a maroon eyebrow. He was tempted to propose that she joins the Oracion Seis, but he knew that it wouldn't go well. He asked, "Which two guilds?"
Lucy answered, "Fairy Tail and Sabertooth."
Cobra nodded. He had heard of those two guilds. Fairy Tail was known for its strength while Sabertooth, though rather new, was growing in strength as more and more mages joined and strengthened their own magic. Both guilds were good choices. He was brought out of his thoughts when Lucy asked, "what is your magic?"
The maroon-haired man responded, stopping his walking to help Lucy stable herself when she stumbled before they continued walking, "I'm a Poison Dragon Slayer. It's a type of Lost Magic. Legend says that Dragon Slayer Magic is the only type of magic that can kill a dragon." he scoffed and added, "sure, if dragons even existed."
Lucy laughed lightly. She said, "as you can probably guess, I'm a celestial wizard."
Cobra looked down at her, asking, "what keys do you have?"
"My silver keys are Lyra, Horologium, Pyxis, and Crux. My golden keys are Aquarius and Cancer."
"I've heard of the golden keys. Angel has Aries, Scorpio, and Gemini."
Lucy stopped walking, causing Cobra and Cubellios to come to a stop with her and turn to look at her. Upon seeing that Lucy was staring at the ground with a troubled look on her face, Cobra listened to her thoughts. He heard her silently question if Angel was his girlfriend and if she had just gotten in between a couple. Some feeling that he was unfamiliar with and didn't like tugged at his heart. He didn't like that Lucy was questioning if she had possibly broken up a couple. He decided to put her worrying to ease by saying, "Angel can be a real bitch. I sometimes wonder why she and I are still friends."
Lucy looked up at him and asked, "just friends?" A slight blush appeared on her cheeks. It was cute, in Cobra's opinion. He nodded in response to her question. He listened to her thoughts again, happy to find that her fears had been put to ease.
They resumed their walking. Cobra knew that he was going to need to answer to an enraged Brain, but right now, he was going to enjoy spending as much time as he could with this young woman he was falling in love with. He was also going to ask Midnight what the name of the woman he met was. He didn't like the idea of having to compete with another man for Lucy, he would rather have her to himself without any obstacles. Though, if Midnight wanted to fight him for her, then no way would he be backing down.
Lucy walked into the back of Minnie's bakery and cafe, a wicker basket full of blueberries in her hands. Minnie turned around, moving her attention from the batter she was stirring to her employee. With a smile, she said, "Lucy, dear! Thank you so much! Just set the basket on the table right there." She pointed at a metal table right next to that large oven that sat against the far right wall. Lucy did as she was told. Her mind quickly turned to the man she had met earlier that day.
Cobra was very handsome and obviously powerful. He was like Midnight in that he seemed like a tough guy that was really nice and soft on the inside. What was the possibility of Cobra and Midnight knowing each other? Lucy was suspicious of him until he allowed her to pet his companion, Cubellios. She was pretty and the blonde's fingers had been itching to run over the snake's smooth scales the moment she saw her. Lucy was still on guard when she was standing next to Cobra, not sure if he was on Kit's side and not wanting to take a chance at being attacked. Though, she also didn't want him to think that she was a threat, so she had decided to give him a chance. She was ultimately won over when he protected her from his friend, another celestial wizard.
She couldn't stop herself from experiencing attraction toward him, just as she had toward Cana, Bixlow, Erza, Laxus, and Midnight. She silently groaned. She couldn't believe that she was attracted to another mage! Especially after he displayed basic human decency by protecting her! It was through that act that she felt safe from Kit and those other two men, just like how she felt safe when she was near Laxus.
As usual, Lucy imagined a date with the independent mage. He seemed like the type to favor picnics in an empty park in the evening or a walk down a secluded path through the forest. Something quiet and that would allow them to be alone. It sounded nice. A lovely date that would allow them to get to know each other. She also wouldn't mind bringing Cubellios along. The large snake had almost immediately grown on Lucy and now the blonde mage wanted to pet her again and talk with Cobra some more.
A voice brought Lucy out of her thoughts, "who is making you blush, dear?"
Lucy looked to her side to find Minnie standing there, her arms folded over her chest and giving her a knowing smirk. The celestial wizard realized to her horror that she was blushing and obviously staring off into space, daydreaming about something.
She stepped back, shaking her hands in front of herself in denial, saying as she now blushed in embarrassment, "no, no, no! I'm not thinking about anybody! Nobody at all!"
Minnie chuckled. She maintained her smirk. It was obvious that she didn't believe Lucy. She turned and walked back to her bowl of batter as she responded, "alright, dear, if you say so." Her tone was unconvinced.
Wanting to avoid further embarrassment and distract herself, Lucy muttered that she was going to go to the front and wait for customers to walk in. She then proceeded to think about not just Cobra, but the other mages she was confusingly attracted to. At least she was being provided with a distraction from Kit and her partners.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
This was shorter than I expected. I was going to have Lucy treat Cobra to some pastries but I couldn't really figure out how to transition from the forest to the bakery/cafe, so this ended up being just over 4000 words rather than the expected ~6000 words.
Here is a hint as to who is next: Red.
The like Coluan council or whatever will be talking about the greatest threat to planetary security and what to do about it and then said threat is like a neurodivergent 12 year old
Not only that, but then they sincerely consider selling him, and might have if it weren't for them being part of the U.P. which forbade it. Then they ship him off 'to be someone else's problem' (Earth/Terra) then respond to the U.P. draft by setting him up as their representative for The Legion of Super-Heroes where then years later they try (and nearly succeed) to assassinate him.
Great bunch.
You would think this behavior would come from a Coluan Council that was only a couple years out from under the Computer Tyrants, not 1000 years later.
May 1961. The revelation in 1964 that the Brainiac was actually an android created an additional potential complication for Supergirl's love life. When she joined the Legion of Super-Heroes in 1961, she had met and dated Brainiac 5, who had explained that he was the villain's direct descendant:
Tumblr media
The Brainiac retcon in SUPERMAN #167 rationalized this discrepancy by saying that the original android Brainiac briefly had a "son" as part of his disguise, and that Brainiac 5's actual ancestor was the human (well, Coluan) boy forced into the role of "Brainiac II":
Tumblr media
Brainiac II didn't get a name in this brief initial appearance, but a 1965 "Meet the Legionnaires" text item in ADVENTURE COMICS #335 gave him the name "Vril Dox" and explained:
Having learned many of Brainiac's scientific secrets, he ran away; then, while his villainous foster-father went off on his espionage mission, which was to occupy many years, Vril used his knowledge to build a brain stimulator which raised his mind to a twelfth-level effector. Now he was smarter than the tyrannous computers and led his people in a revolt against the machines. Honored by the people he had freed, Vril Dox, alias Brainiac II, lived a long, happy life. Long, indeed—for the green-skinned inhabitants of that world have a life-span far greater than that of an Earthman. When he grew up, Vril married and became a father. He found that his brain-stimulator had affected his genes, so that his children inherited his twelfth-level-effector brain. His son Pran Dox, was nicknamed Brainiac 3. He in turn was the father of Kajz Dox (Brainiac 5), whose son, Querl Dox, became Brainiac 5 of the Legion of Super-Heroes. Thus it is that Brainiac 5 has a twelfth-level-effector mind, like the original Brainiac. With a mind twice as powerful as ordinary humans, Brainiac 5 can solve the most difficult problems in seconds.
This text item isn't credited, but it MIGHT have been written by E. Nelson Bridwell, who became Mort Weisinger's assistant editor in 1965. In any event, the name "Vril" was almost certainly borrowed from the 1871 Edward Bulwer-Lytton novel THE COMING RACE, where it refers to an "all-permeating liquid" that works kind of like the Force in STAR WARS. (That novel also fueled all manner of conspiracy theory occultism, and in 1988 was incorporated into DC continuity in Roy Thomas's YOUNG ALL-STARS. A long story.)
The circumstances of Brainiac II's eventual uprising were never directly shown in pre-Crisis comics, but the first three issues of L.E.G.I.O.N. '89 depict his overthrow of what are now called the Computer Tyrants of Colu. The L.E.G.I.O.N. and R.E.B.E.L.S. series also established that Vril Dox was not a nice guy:
The Legion of Super-Heroes villain Pulsar Stargrave, first seen in SUPERBOY #224, claimed at times to be Brainiac 5's father, but he also later claimed to be the original Brainiac, which later developments of the latter character made unlikely. The post-Crisis L.E.G.I.O.N. series reveals that Stargrave was neither, but was in fact an android body housing the minds of the Computer Tyrants of Colu whom Vril Dox and his comrades had previously overthrown. Whether that was true in pre-Crisis continuity is anybody's guess.
