Japanese Delegation Visits UMass Boston to Exchange Best Practices in Student Disability and Health Services

In May, ICI’s Dr. Heike Boeltzig-Brown, Senior Manager of International Partnerships, hosted a delegation from Japan at UMass Boston. The 4-person delegation represented Gifu University, Ritsumeikan University, and the Tokyo Institute of Technology. Some of these delegates had previously participated in the Leadership Institute on College Students with Disabilities in Higher Education in Japan, an ICI project funded by the Nippon Foundation, that trained Japanese university disability and career professionals in supporting students with disabilities to obtain employment after graduation. Dr. Boeltzig-Brown led the project.

During their visit, the delegation met with Hannah Kaplan Huynh, Assistant Director of the Ross Center for Disability Services, and her colleagues. They exchanged best practices in supporting students with disabilities and coordinating with health and counseling services. The Japanese delegates presented on the state of disability, health, and counseling services for Japanese college students with disabilities. Huynh expressed interest in continuing collaboration with the Japanese delegation through the ICI.

In addition to meeting with the Disability Services team, the Japanese delegates also had the opportunity to consult with staff from Health Services and the Counseling Center. Center Director Dr. Kimberly Santora and Staff Psychologist Zeljka Mileusnic met with the delegation to discuss approaches and services their departments provided to students before, during, and after the COVID-19 pandemic. The delegates were able to tour the facilities, gaining further insights into UMass Boston’s student support systems.

Bọn Hổ Lực Đại Tiên tức ra mặt, bèn nói: - Ta thách đấu tiếp. - Ok chơi thì chơi – Tôn Ngộ Không cười. Các fan vỗ tay rào rào. Nhà vua nói: - Cố lên đạo sĩ. Vừa lúc đó, hoàng hậu nhéo tai ngài: - Phải cổ vũ cho Ngộ Không chứ. - Ơ … ơ… buông tai trẫm ra, ừ thì Ngộ Không cố lên, hic đau quá hoàng hậu ơi. - Thi gì đây? Tôn Ngộ Không hỏi - Thi ăn. - Để cho đệ – Trư Bát Giới nghe thi ăn chạy vụt ra. Lúc đó, Hổ Lực Đại Tiên cầm bánh xe ô tô ăn ngon lành. - Mi thi nữa không ? – Tôn Ngộ Không hỏi Bát Giới./ - Tất nhiên là không, đệ làm sao sánh với huynh – Trư Bát Giới cười hi hì. Tôn Ngộ Không cười nhạt rồi gặm luôn cả nóc chiếc xe ấy. Hổ Lực Đại Tiên cả kinh, vội vàng nhai luôn chiếc cột, nhưng lúc y quay sang thì đã thấy Tôn Ngộ Không đang nướng con sư tử đá rồi chén ngon lành. Hổ lực đại tiên kêu lên: - Tức nổ mắt nè trời ơi. Tôn Ngộ Không cười: - Nổ mắt hả, thế thì thi ăn mắt luôn. Nói rồi tự gõ một cái vào gáy, nhai luôn con mắt vừa rơi ra. Hổ Lực Đại tiên tức khí, gõ mạnh một cái vào gáy thì lăn đùng ra, biến thành một con hổ to tướng. Tôn Ngộ Không cười ha hả: - Thế là có cao hổ cốt nguyên chất đem bán rồi. Trư Bát Giới, Sa Tăng cũng nhân cơ hội đó, túm luôn lấy hai tên còn lại bắt chúng phải hiện nguyên hình.

Tìm hiểu cuộc đời và sự nghiệp của ‘thợ chụp ảnh của những điều kì dị’ Diane Arbus

Diane (tên đầy đủ Diane Nemerov) sinh ra vào năm 1923 tại thành ph�� New York trong một gia đình người Do Thái di cư từ Nga. Gia đình của cô khá giả, sở hữu một cửa hàng tại Phố 5 mang tên Russeks, nhờ vậy mà họ không bị ảnh hưởng bởi cuộc khủng hoảng tài chính tại Mỹ.

Là một ‘quý cô’ trong một gia đình giàu có, Diane được nuôi lớn bởi các cô hầu, khiến cô xa cách với những thành viên khác của tất cả. Mặc dù không trực tiếp nuôi nấng, nhưng gia đình cũng có một tầm ảnh hưởng gián tiếp đến cuộc đời của cô. Sau khi bố cô nghỉ hưu, ông trở thành một họa sĩ. Người chị gái của cô cũng là một người tạo mẫu và tạc tượng, anh cô thì là nhà thơ đã từng đạt giải Pulitzer danh giá. Diane cũng từng tập vẽ, nhưng ngừng sau khi cô ra khỏi trường cấp 3.

Diane Arbus lấy chồng từ năm 18 tuổi, chồng cô tên là Allan Arbus. 2 người đều là thợ chụp ảnh thương mại trong khoảng thời gian từ 1946 đến 1956. Cuộc hôn nhân của họ gặp nhiều trắc trở và kết thúc vào năm 1969, người chồng của cô sau đó trở thành diễn viên – có một vai diễn nổi tiếng là Sidney Freedman trong phim M*A*S*H.

Đó là vài dòng về cuộc sống cá nhân của Diane, nhưng điều thú vị đối với những thợ chụp ảnh chắc hẳn rằng sự nghiệp trong ngành ảnh của cô.

Cô Arbus nhận được chiếc máy ảnh đầu tiên lúc 18 tuổi, một chiếc Graflex ngay sau khi lấy chồng. Chồng cô đã từng là một thợ chụp ảnh trong Đội tín hiệu Quân đội Mỹ ở Thế chiến thứ 2. Cô bắt đầu theo học Berenice Abbot, một thợ chụp ảnh nữ khác nổi tiếng trong ngành chụp chân dung.

Thợ chụp ảnh Diane Arbus

Vào 1946, Diane cùng chồng thành lập công ty nhiếp ảnh thương mại Diane & Allan Arbus. Cô đảm nhiệm nhiệm vụ lên ý tưởng và thuê người mẫu, nhưng được cho là không cảm thấy thỏa mãn với vị trí này. Mặc dù cả Diane và người chồng Allan đều không có niềm đam mê nhiếp ảnh thương mại nhưng cả 2 cũng có một sự nghiệp thành công, tạo ra được nhiều bức hình cho Vogue, Glamour và Seventeen. Một bức hình của bộ đôi này còn được trưng bày tại Viện bảo tàng Mỹ thuật vào 1955.

Trong khoảng time đầu của sự nghiệp, cô rất thích những hạt grain của ảnh film và chụp với một máy ảnh Nikon 35mm. Vào khoảng năm 1962, cô chuyển sang máy ảnh medium format Rolleiflex để có tên tuổi ảnh cao hơn. Để giải thích cho sự chuyển đổi này, cô nói:

“Khi bắt đầu chụp hình, tôi rất thích hạt grain, chúng như biến một ảnh thành những bức họa có các tiểu tiết nhỏ trên giấy vậy. Nhưng sau một khoảng thời gian chụp hình, tôi cảm thấy chán chúng và muốn đi tìm một thứ mới. Tôi bắt đầu đi tìm kiếm sự chi tiết.”

Diane Arbus sau đó chuyển hẳn qua nhiếp ảnh đường phố, và bắt đầu tìm thấy thành công trong mảng này. Một số trong những người thầy của cô là Lisette Model, một thợ chụp ảnh nữ cũng hoạt động trong mảng nhiếp ảnh đường phố. Arbus từng nói với Model: “Tôi muốn chụp lại những điều kỳ dị, những thứ mà mọi người được dạy là nên ngoảnh mặt làm ngơ.”

Những bức hình của cô thường được cắt thành từng khối vuông, và sử dụng đèn kể cả trong điều kiện trời sáng để làm nổi bật được chủ thể. Cô cho rằng, ánh sáng đèn làm lộ ra những thứ mà ta thường không nhìn thấy ở một con người. Arbus thường cho chủ thể nhìn thẳng vào ống kính, nhưng ở một số ảnh thì lại chưa làm vậy để tạo sự tự nhiên.

‘Đứa trẻ cùng quả lựu đạn tại Công viên Trung tâm (N.Y.C. 1962)’ là 1 trong bức hình nổi tiếng nhất của cô. Đây là một bức hình kỳ lạ và cũng thật ám ảnh. Đứa trẻ nhìn mặt thật giận dữ, đang nghiến răng và một tay cầm quả lựu đạn. Cậu ta còn đứng rất xa mọi người, tạo sự cách biệt hoàn toàn.

Đây là một trong số trong những bức hình có tầm ảnh hưởng nhất của Thế kỷ 20. Và khi nhìn vào những bức hình khác trong cuộn phim chụp cậu bé này, cô Arbus có tương đối nhiều ảnh ‘bình thường’ lúc cậu ta cười nói, chơi đùa nhưng cuối cùng bức hình được chọn lại kỳ dị, đáng sợ hơn vậy. Cậu bé trong hình mang tên Colin Wood, đã có những lời giải thích:

“Cô ấy bắt gặp tôi vào thời điểm cuộc đời tôi gặp nhiều sóng gió. Trong lúc đó, tôi cảm thấy rất cô đơn vì bố mẹ tôi vừa li dị, tôi cảm thấy như mình bị bỏ rơi. Cô ấy có công dụng chụp được sự cô đơn của tất mọi người, ở những người cảm thấy cô đơn nhưng không biết kết nối với những người xung quanh. Có lẽ cô ấy cũng cảm thấy vậy, và việc thể hiện được những suy tư đó trên những bức hình giúp cô ấy có thể vượt lên chính mình.”

Điều đặc biệt ở Diane Arbus đó là cô không chỉ chụp hình những ‘người lạ’ trên phố, cô còn muốn làm quen và hiểu được cuộc sống của họ. Chính vì như vậy mà phong cách của cô rất khác biệt so với những thợ chụp ảnh bấy giờ, tạo ra việc độc đáo.

‘Đứa bé, N.Y.C. 1968’ là bức hình chụp lại Anderson Cooper, phóng viên của CNN và là con của Gloria Vanderbilt. Đây là một ảnh mà cô Arbus chụp cho tạp chí Bazaar năm 1968. Cô quen cả 2 phụ huynh của Cooper, vì vậy cô dành thời gian tới nhà của họ để chụp đứa con mới chào đời. Cô tới nhà họ nhiều lần, chụp rất nhiều ảnh trước khi chọn được một bức ưng ý nhất để gửi cho tòa soạn. Gia đình Cooper không có thấy gì điều này là phiền, và những bức cô chụp còn được lưu giữ tại nhà của họ.

‘Người Do Thái khổng lồ cùng với bộ mẹ của mình, NY, 1970’ là bức hình chụp lại Eddie Carmel. Dù cho có chiều cao bình thường lúc còn trẻ, nhưng khi lớn lên Eddie Carmel cao một cách bất thường, đạt 2.7m. Bức hình này giống như họ đang chuẩn bị cho một cuộc chụp hình gia đình vậy.

Điều đáng tiếc là anh đã ra đi ở tuổi 36, 2 năm sau khi Arbus chụp lại tấm hình này. Cô cho rằng bức hình đã ghi lại được ‘ác mộng của người mẹ anh ấy’. “Ác mộng của bất cứ người mẹ nào đó là đẻ ra một đứa con, sau đó nó trở thành một con quái vật. Đó là tất cả những gì xảy ra trong bức hình này, với nét mặt ngạc nhiên của mẹ Eddie Carmel.”

Bức hình của Arbus mà tôi thấy thích nhất là ‘Cô gái trong trang phục xiếc, Md. 1970’. Cô gái này nhìn thật là giống với Wonderwoman từ những cuốn truyện tranh DC, và thể hiện được rất rõ không khí của Mỹ ở những năm 70.

Chủ thể trong những bức hình của Diane Arbus là những người có cuộc sống khó khăn, những người ở đáy của xã hội, không được người khác tôn trọng. Cô thường có lòng thương với những con người xấu số này, vì cuộc đời của họ khác hẳn với cô – một cuộc sống đầy đủ, được nuôi dưỡng trong một gia đình giàu có. Cô chụp những vũ công khỏa thân, diễn viên xiếc, cộng đồng LGBT, người chuyển giới hay những người mắc bệnh về thần kinh. Cô cho rằng những người mà cô chụp có sức ảnh hưởng với cô hơn là những bức hình chụp được.

Thợ chụp ảnh Edmund Shea chia sẻ: “Nhiều người cho rằng Arbus là một người có cái nhìn xấu về cuộc sống, nhưng điều đó là sai hoàn toàn. Cô là một người giàu lòng đồng cảm, rất mạnh mẽ và thẳng thắn.”

Có lẽ điều đáng nhớ nhất với cô không phải là những bức hình, mà là hành trình đến gặp những con người ‘kì dị’, quá trình tìm hiểu họ. Cô đi tìm những thứ chân thật ở con người, cái khoảng cách giữa thứ mà ta muốn mọi người nhìn thấy và bản chất thật của mỗi chúng ta. Để biết được tầm ảnh hưởng của Arbus, ta tìm đến những lời bình của Robert Hughes: “Những tác phẩm của Arbus đã thay đổi hoàn toàn mảng nhiếp ảnh mà cô tham gia, khiến ta khó có thể nhớ được rằng nó ban đầu phải làm gì.”

Cô nhận được học bổng Guggenheim tới 2 lần, một lần vào năm 1963 cho album ảnh ‘Nghi thức, phong tục và tập quán Mỹ’, và lần thứ 2 vào năm 1966. Vào những năm 60 của Thế kỷ trước, cô Arbus làm việc cho các tòa soạn để nhận tiền nhuận, vì tiền bán những bức hình của cô không đủ để trang trải cho cuộc sống. Điều đáng tiếc là cô mắc chứng trầm cảm và viêm gan giống người mẹ của mình. Theo người chồng cũ của Arbus, cô liên tục thay đổi tâm trạng cách nhanh nhất chóng, ngay sau khi vui đã có thể trở nên buồn bã. Vào 1971, cô tự tử ở tuổi 48.

Trở lại với hiện tại, những bức hình của cô được trưng bày tại bảo tàng Metropolitan tại New York, bảo tàng Quốc gia tại Washington D.C, bảo tàng hạt thành phố Los Angeles, cùng rất nhiều những bảo tàng khác trên khắp đất Mỹ.

Ouverture est la pièce créée entre novembre 2020 et février 2021 par les élèves de l’atelier avec la danseuse et chorégraphe Lenio Kaklea, également auteure de L’Encyclopédie des pratiques. Depuis 2016 elle se rend en Allemagne, en Grèce et en France pour interroger les Européens sur leur pratiques quotidiennes, inventées, intimes, visibles, invisibles, solitaires ou collectives. Puis elle collecte leurs réponses dans un corpus de textes qui composent cet ouvrage. C’est à partir de certains de ces textes extraits de L’Encyclopédie des pratiques et d’outils physiques axés sur la technique d’Alexander qu’ont été écrites les différentes parties d’Ouverture avant de s’associer pour créer cette pièce. Ouverture a été performée pour la première fois le 12 février au CND puis aux Beaux-Arts les 28 et 29 mai. Elle le sera à nouveau le 17 juin à l’occasion du festival Camping.

Guided by Gertler’s conversation, images, and energy — we go with her —within a enlarging circle tracing the fullness of her practice and its life.

THEY ARE WHAT THEY SEEM

Collage and text work ongoing for over ten years.

She/[G] Gertler & me/[G] Gardella have been exchanging Polaroids (its reincarnations) since 2001. We shoot in response to the one received, Then send it through the post office.

Gertler described the unique hybrid residency program she founded in 2009 and continues to direct. It’s mission intense and rigorous—dynamically and deliciously. Meals together are as integral as the studio visits, curatorial marathon. The city itself shapes the program and the artist walk is an introduction.

IN SEARCH OF THE MIRACULOUS a 10+ hour walk through Berlin. Like a relay the PB artists are guided into neighborhood by a local artist and passed to their next guide. So the day continues - with moments when food or drinks seem miraculously to appear at just the right time. Among stories and history - the sense of place and awareness of each other emerges.

The title for the walk in homage to Bas Jan Ader's last work of that name. In 1975, he set sail in a 13 foot boat with the intent of crossing the Atlantic. He was never seen again.

ARTIST BOOKS / CAKEHOLE

In these photographs and collages, Gertler uses images of fragmented women’s bodies. This is the second book in a series of three printed on a Risograph machine.

H E A T

Parading (and more) through the streets of Berlin. Sometimes with many, sometimes solo.

A social sculpture created monthly by Gertler & Schiesser. They invite an artist to install their work in an apartment in Berlin (mostly) and alternately in other cities. Then for this Sunday afternoon reception they bake the artist’s favorite dessert and serve it with coffee/tea to the guests.

TRAVERSED LANDSCAPES

A series of works with thread sewn into found black & white photographs.

WALL DRAWINGS

Gertler stated making large wall pieces after she had been using string sewn and across walls. She was interested in the ephemeral quality of the chalk and the work itself.

A metamorphic and hidden neighborhood speakeasy. Each time it pops-up the atmosphere, the cocktails, and personas of the bartenders —familiar yet new.

TAKE THE CAKE

“...my favorite C-word cake.”

With these Lecture Performances Gertler shares her passion for baking while riffing on feminism. She showed a clip from Take the Cake performed as part of a six night series: 6 Women, 6 Nights, 6 Performances at the project space tête in Berlin.

Then when the clip ended....and to the delight of us all.

She reached behind the curtain and brought out her Hungarian Cherry Cake!

We eat cake.

In the summer of 2012 we were together, when she invited me as visiting artist for PICTURE BERLIN. As old friends and collaborators we talked into many late nights and picked up the beat in the early morning over tea and coffee. We talked about community, art, friendships, and making things happen. In the fall of 2012 came Sonntag that Gertler co-initiated with Adrian Schiesser & :::::Presenting at 17::::: at my apartment on East 4th Street. Both have continued on the same third Sunday of the month.

To make this night possible, April & Adrian postponed their October 2016 date so April could be in the East Village for P17.
