Masterlist

With an amazing 36 works, the 2023 round of the Rare Pair Fest is now closed! Our lovely participants created for 21 different relationships, with Arthur/Gwen/Merlin snatching the first spot with 5 works, Merlin/Gwaine coming second with 4, and third place being shared by Gwen/Morgana, Gwaine/Percival, and Leon/Merlin, all with 3 works each.

The hugest thank you to everyone who left prompts, wrote fics, created art, read and shared and left some love, and last but not least to the Merlin Fic Book Club Server for hosting us on the Discord side of things. I was actually blown away by everyone's enthusiasm for this fest, and I can't wait for the second round <3

An itty-bitty (aka exactly 500 words) fic, written by me for my adopted @merlinbingo square ‘Paddles’ and for @merlinmicrofic - Fill for prompt: “Your turn”, Gwaine/Merlin, Teen, no warnings apply

“Come with me,” Merlin says, holding out his hand, and Gwaine loves him, he does, would usually be more than happy engaging in whatever kind of physical contact Merlin wants from him, but today it’s just too damn hot.

“Merlin, sweetheart, I love you, but if you're planning on us sneaking off for some alone time, you're going to need to do something about the temperature first.”

“What? How would I do that?” Merlin answers, voice a fraction higher than usual, and Gwaine adds another item to his list of things Merlin definitely can't do with the magic he absolutely doesn't have. Merlin follows the unconvincing denial with a laugh, so awkward Gwaine has to reach out and take the hand Merlin’s still offering him, never mind how unbearable physical contact is in this weather.

“Just a joke, love,” he says, soft and soothing, because as much as he wishes Merlin would admit to having magic, Gwaine hates him freaking out whenever he even hints at knowing about it. “So, where are we going?”

Merlin relaxes, his smile much more natural than the laugh. “Trust me?”

“Always,” Gwaine says, and means it.

Merlin leads them deeper into the forest, away from where the others are making camp. They drop hands soon enough, the path too narrow and the heat too oppressive for prolonged handholding to be comfortable, but Merlin glances back over his shoulder regularly to make sure Gwaine’s still with him.

He is, of course. He doesn't know where they're going, but wherever Merlin wants to take him, Gwaine's going to follow.

The trees part ahead of them, and Gwaine finds himself standing on a rocky outcrop, gazing down at a lake, dusk staining the water almost black.

“Fuck, yes,” he says, grinning, because he's spent the whole day rhapsodising about how much he wants exactly this. “It safe to jump from here?”

He's already undressing, because he's going in whatever Merlin says. All that'll change is how he gets there, whether he dives right in or scrambles down the rocks and paddles until it’s deep enough to swim.

Merlin breaks from his shameless ogling to gaze at the lake, and Gwaine pretends not to see his eyes flashing gold.

“It's safe,” he says, and Gwaine takes off running, hollering as he launches himself through the air and down, down into water that still holds enough of the sun’s warmth to be perfect after a day of riding in full armour in the scorching heat.

“How is it?” Merlin asks when Gwaine finally surfaces.

“Perfect,” he answers. “Your turn?”

Merlin shakes his head, carefully picking his way down to the shore, Gwaine's discarded clothing bundled in his arms. “Not a chance,” he says, laughing as he settles himself on a rock. He pulls his boots off, placing them and his socks a safe distance from the water, then dips his toes below the surface. “Take your time, though. I'll be here to warm you up again when you're done.”

Hi anon!! You're doing great, never be apologetic about your writing ;) 💖

Ooh dark Arthur fics! I love those, but they're very rare for some reason in the fandom. Everyone tends to deify Arthur, and honestly can't blame😂 But in the rare times where we get unhinged, possessed, angry, or morally grey Arthur, it is a refreshing breeze of air.

I have three fics for you.

1. Beauty in the Ashes of Our Lives by Fulgance. To conclude even before I begin, this is one of the greatest Merlin fics on earth. It's not necessarily Dark!Arthur as much as it is ruined Arthur who ends up sentencing Merlin to death and killing him himself. It's awe-inspiring how the author makes you believe it, and not just that, but be able to justify both of their actions as well. (not that murder is justifiable lol, but in here you see an extreme reaction from the great King, and you somehow ache for him). You don't see Arthur a villain here; you see him broken to the point of having his solid grounds snatched from his feet. His anger is warranted, and his actions are so in sync with someone who is moved only by anger and pain. And the way the Knights are written; dear holy God! Sometimes I'm sitting in peace, then You're his fucking Arthur rings in my head, and I'm not okay afterwards. I'll keep recommending this fic until the end of time.

2. The Phantom of Arthur Pendragon by marvelxpendragon. This fic is the classic definition of Dark!Arthur. It's a crime against humanity how little it has been read. I kid you not, I screamed at my phone's screen as if it was the culprit when I first read it. And then I screamed a bit more to the author affectionately. I absolutely loved her take on the idea of changing destiny's course and saving Arthur, because in most dotd fix-it fics this doesn't have any consequences. But here, you see the price fully-fledged. And the way Arthur redeems his actions, asking Merlin not to make him forget because it's a burden they should both share, that was a supreme King Arthur moment. Such a hidden gem fic.

3. Pining for the Moon by EachPeachPearPlum. Again with the Arthur killing Merlin fic type, but the narrative here is very special. There is something in me that gets drawn immediately to experimental minimalistic writing. And when writers ace it, you bet I'm not shutting up about their fics anytime soon. There is so much brilliance in this method of writing that it makes me gape how works like these aren't published and publicly revered as they should be. You'll really enjoy this one.

Fic: MyKingdomComeUndone created Something So Magic About You (The Taste of Temptation Remix) for insane_falcon (Merlin/Arthur – Explicit – 27053w) Summary: “You’re more interesting than I thought you’d be,” Arthur admits, allowing his lips to curl into a smile that hovers somewhere between supercilious and patronising. “But you should really give up while I’m playing nice. His breath catches in his throat as the boy lets out an undignified snort. That was not quite the reaction he was aiming for... Before he can come up with something clever and scathing to say, the boy doubles down.

“And how long have you been training to be a prat?” he asks, again raising that damned eyebrow of his. “Or did that just come naturally?”

For an excruciating moment, Arthur is struck speechless. How dare this…this imbecile insult him to his face? A prat? He’ll show him who’s the prat!

Arthur’s eyes narrow as he brings his sword back up, but instead of cowering in fear, the boy merely smirks at him.

But in the middle of it there had been no opportunity for pause, no moment where he could check that Bucky was okay. He kept moving, and that was what mattered.

Do you have any Merlin fic recs where Arthur finds outs about Merlin’s magic, reacts poorly, and then Merlin just dies right after. And then Arthur has to deal with Merlin’s death and the lack of closure?
